A nice back up is needed. I totally agree with that. Whether Mills is that guy or not is the question. He’s now in his 4th season and has yet to prove he can win. Better than Keenum? Maybe with Keenum’s age, but that bar isn’t very high. And Keenum has at least proven he can win at a high level in this league. Again, whether his old bones can still do it, I don’t know. And we all know Boyle is an extra camp arm, nothing more.
And I really do hate talking about back up QBs because I hope to never see them in a game. But you and a few others commenting about improvement and progress, sorry, I just don’t see it. He had a 61% completion percentage last night with an 81 passer rating. He did have a TD drive but that was pretty much a gift thanks to the muffed punt. I thought the 2 minute drill would have been important to get the reps in, but the Texans didn’t feel that way at the beginning of the drive with the amount of time they wasted on the 1st couple of plays. Mills did get them into FG range eventually but a couple of shots at the end zone at the very least were taken away with the nonchalant approach at the beginning. Maybe that’s a big confidence boost if he punches it in there but now we’ll never know.
And I know some roll their eyes at it, but who is on the field matters. If Mills sees significant snaps during the season, he won’t be playing lesser talent of 2nd and 3rd teams, like he is in these PS games where he still looks mediocre. And yes, I’m aware that the talent he’ll be playing with will be much better too. Diggs, Nico and Tank are much better targets than Hutch, Metchie and Sims, granted.
Let’s just hope CJ can go all 21 games and the only time we see anyone other than 7 under center is mop up and victory formation duty.
