Texans random thought of the day

Many fans last season routinely left several hours before what they normally would need to get to the game on time.................and the traffic still made it impossible to arrive in time to be seated for the beginning of the game.
Depending on where the fans are traveling from could be an issue. I have typically found ways to get around the traffic and to the stadium on time. Back streets are my best friends.

Depending on where the fans are traveling from could be an issue. I have typically found ways to get around the traffic and to the stadium on time. Last year 12/30 I went to an 3:30 game in Arlington, and didn’t want to drive back to Houston that night although the Texans game was at noon. I drove to Palestine and spent the night, then left there at 8:40 a.m. I had to stop for gas and a McDonald’s breakfast to go. I ran into traffic near 288 and 610 but travelled on to the Bellfort exit and took the back path to the game. It worked out and and I was in my seat before the game began. I was exhausted by 4th quarter, but it was worth the effort in getting there.
My hat's off to you. But it shouldn't take that much effort to get to a game on time. Most fans are not about to put themselves through what has become a harder and harder chore. Even when you live within 10 miles aways, the traffic today is unnavigatable...........and most "workarounds" are usually now just as bottlenecked. The most recent reconstructions of the major highways leading to the stadium will make things that much more difficult. Discounting food and drink is unlikely for the average fan to make up for the upstream journey needed to take advantage of it.

Oops I didn’t get my edit done in time after reading and thought TMI.

So far my alternate routes have worked well for me, and of course traffic was much lighter getting in and out of the stadium the last two years. I look forward to seeing how this year works out.

They have discounted a few common food and drink items, which works out if not looking for specialty items such as bbq or those Trill burgers. I am curious about how the Falcons have kept their menu items throughout the stadium the lowest that I have seen.

Back in 2017, the Falcons owner Arthur Blank recognized and acknowledged that food prices in stadiums were way out of line with the "real world" and introduced "Fan-first pricing"..........the model includes whole dollar prices, such as $2 for hot dogs, sodas, popcorn, and pretzels, and $3 for french fries, pizza, and nachos.

Significantly more food concession areas compared to other stadiums, cashless pay, many automat vending machines all lent themselves to lower prices.

That goes for every major city. The traffic is insane trying to get to the game. Especially football.

I agree. I just hate walking across a dozen fans tgetting to my seat. But my question would be, what is the team doing to promote fans coming into the stadium early? The Astros have promotional giveaways. Other than, "Hey fans, get inside NRG early for the $10 beers and $20 chicken fingers", what's their enticement?
Wow I haven’t been in Houston in a few years but it’s sounding like the traffic is far worse than I remember and it’s tougher to get in earlier, but I agree that the Texans need to have promotional giveaways to get them in earlier. I see more benefit than cost to do it. The promotions are only pre game and 2-5$ beers would bring in more pre game revenue if nobody is in the stadium anyway buying the regular cost beer/food. For a pre game promotion they may give up a little profit margin but it will be offset by increased revenues. Furthermore they may sell more clothing etc and there is the consideration of the value of an energized and loud fan base. They are blowing it IMO. Edit. If people are getting in earlier would that help the traffic around the stadium by spreading out the volume over a longer period?

Most fans would rather drink free beer at the tailgates rather than rush into the stadium for the right to pay 10-15 dollars for a beer. This really isn't that hard to figure out.

Heck I cannot even afford the discounted food and drink. When I used to go to the Astros decades ago, I always ate before I went or after I got home.

Placing this article here as you mentioned Trill burgers. Lawsuit involves rich siblings that partnered with famous entertainer plus allegations of theft of proprietary ingredients and recipe. Also being a Houston group is part of the interest for me.

It depends on the route in some cities. I drive to Cowboys games taking I20 West to Collins and have very limited traffic issues. However I tried twice from I45 to I30 and it was a nightmare to and from.

I can only speak of the stadiums that I have visited which so far are only nine. So far, NRG is the only one I’ve seen with so many empty seats until midway first quarter. Being late in many situations is having to say excuse me multiple times and a distraction from game while trying to get to their seats. I’ve even had one in an effort to get through spilled beer on me.

One thing I like about the set up at AT&T is the $5 12 ounce beer sold on the West Plaza. You can buy two to take into the game and come out at halftime and buy two more. Even though the very expensive 16 oz beer is sold by vendors outside and concessions inside, I prefer the Plaza 12 oz option.

I've got to say I really love this new breed of NFL head coach and executive that are now coming through the league who are far more willing and excited to talk ball than their predecessors were.

Here's new Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris talking about Bobby Slowik:

It's a fun interview, you can tell he's got a ton of energy and love for the game. Really happy interviews like this are popping up all over the place and let me have just a little bit of football during this downtime.

I’m sure there are more quotes on this topic but I only quoted these 2.
I live in SA and drive to the games and the wife and I normally stay Saturday and Sunday night.
So when the schedule came out this year we looked at the schedule to confirm what games we would attend. Of course we wanted the Sunday night home opener. The two hotels we always stay at, Holiday in. (Just north of red lot and comfort inn suites on McNee st) have price gouged the hell out of its rooms!! The Holiday Inn that Sunday night will cost me close to 5 bills!! Yes, $500!! Comfort inn, just over $430.
The price of having a good fun team again! But I never remember paying that much even during the playoff years!
Just ridiculous!! Ought to be against the law

Absolutely. I get my fill of food and drink at the tailgate. Wife and I buy 1 beer each, each half. So 4 beers, is still close to $60… ridiculous

Not a drinker so don't understand the need for drinking beer during a 3 hour game. To me it's like going to a movie and complaining about the high price of soda, popcorn and candy. I get it's an experience but not at those prices.

I don't know how you feel about airbnb but I just searched for those dates and there are places within walking distance or a very short drive that are MUCH cheaper.

Personally, I RARELY use hotels anymore (or rental cars for that matter). I tend to find better deals on Airbnb and Turo.

Hadn’t thought about that. Would much rather use an air bnb. Just didn’t figure there would be any in that area. Thanks for the reminder

Just my 2 cents ^^^^
Here in San Antonio Alamodome went to the first UFL/XFL game Brahmas this year. Yes been in this city since 1974. This league has been a great following for a top ten city to have a close to a NFL experience here in town. Sorry for the Roughnecks this year but the Brahmas are going to the XFL Conference championships this weekend. Great crowd great support great great all around and to boot the head coach is Wade Phillips.
But back to the above the parking was $20 end zones minimum are $37. The beer is $8, a 25 ounce was $16, popcorn was $10 etc. Well I am fortunate living near the city north so I took the bus (first time) VIA senior it was free. Why not try it out took us right to the dome. Funny but frustrating thing was that 25 ounce beer I had put between my legs on the floor. Duh me they scored an awesome TD play. Everyone stood up in excitement giving hi fives the rows behind and front of us. Later savoring that $16 full beer I went to grab it and it was gone. It had been kicked and spilled under the seats.
But hey it was all fun and they win the game! Oh but we got 50 yard line seats 15 rows up for $90. That's good.

Found a bad ass one walking distance. Got it booked for three games!! Thanks! 🙏 👍

When I had season tickets, we did the tailgating so we were there 5 hours before the game, lined up on Main St. an hour before the parking lot gates opened just to get a good tailgating spot. So I really can't speak to people just coming, parking, and going directly into the stadium.

I have been to a handful of games since I dropped my season tickets and there was a Thursday night game once where I headed to the stadium about an hour and a half before kickoff, normally about a 30-35 minute drive, and didn't get parked until after the game started, and didn't get to my seat until nearly the end of the 1st quarter. Going to that stadium on a Thursday night or Monday night, during Houston afternoon rush hour? That's a traffic nightmare of epic proportions. Not to mention coming through downtown on 59 takes 20-30 minutes at 1:00 in the afternoon. Forget about trying to get through there at 5:00 for a 7:20 game. Coming in on 290 or I-10W and having to come through the Galleria? Good luck. And right now there's a bottleneck at 610 and 288 so coming up from Pearland or 45S ain't much better. Traffic is bad and it's everywhere, and construction, which is also everywhere, makes it 20 times worse.

That said, a lot of the problem isn't just getting there and trying to park. Going through all the security BS takes forever. Early years, I could leave the tailgate at 11:30 and be in my seats 10 minutes before kickoff. After all the security shit started being put in place, leaving at 11:30 would get you to your seat 10-20 minutes after kickoff. And forget about it if one of the escalators were down, which happened 3 times a year on average.
And I'm not sure what promotional giveaways you could do to get more people in earlier. The first 10,000, 20,000? That doesn't fill up the stadium. You can't give something away to all 70,000 because that wouldn't make a difference if everybody is guaranteed something. I suppose you could have a cutoff time, but imagine the people who miss that cutoff because it takes so long to get through the security checkpoints. And frankly, I wouldn't want to be in there an hour before kickoff anyway. Not a damn thing to do unless you want to spend a bunch more money.

I think this is something that we're just going to have to accept as the norm. I've seen a ton of empty seats at the start of a Steelers game before, so it's not just a Houston thing.

NFL minicamp 2024: Teams, rookies and veterans we're watching

Houston Texans

One thing to watch: How the Texans incorporate wide receiver Stefon Diggs

The Texans' most noteworthy offseason acquisition was Diggs. He joins an offense led by Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud, and minicamp will preview how the former Bills player could mesh into a talented receiver room. Nico Collins, who signed a three-year, $72.75 million extension last week, had 1,297 receiving yards in 2023, and Tank Dell was on pace for 1,205 yards before breaking his leg in early December. Diggs is a four-time Pro Bowler, so this trio of wide receivers for Stroud could lead to one of the best offenses in the NFL. -- DJ Bien-Aime

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I view Danielle Hunter as a much bigger signing than Stefon Diggs. I'm not sure how Hunter doesn't get more love. Hunter is also a 4 time probowler and is a player that filled a much larger need on the team once Greenard left. He also didn't cost a draft pick, is signed for an additional year, and took a discount to come to Houston.

Shush!!! Hmm... well now that I've given up my PSLs I suppose it doesn't have to be a secret any longer. Here's a great route to the Yellow lot from the north/northwest. 610S > L on N Braeswood > R on Buffalo Speedway > L on S Braeswood > R on Braesmain > R on Main St > L into the Yellow lot. (I also park near the entry gate so I don't have to battle my way out of the parking lot, it's usually worth the extra walk.)

When leaving take a left onto Main to farthest lane, then an immediate right on Broadmead Dr. This will get you to Buffalo Speedway to find your highway home.

(Don't tell your friends :winky:)

The idea is to get as many people into their seats as early as possible. As I stated, sell cheap beer to those that show up early. To hell with everyone else. If they want to wait until peak traffic that’s their problem.

I'm not sure how appropriate or wise it is for CJ especially at this very neophyte stage of his career to be offering such commentaries. I speak for no one else.

C.J. Stroud dares to criticize Aaron Rodgers
Published June 4, 2024 09:40 AM

Most hot takes about the NFL come from people not currently playing in it. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is at the cutting edge of a new dynamic — active players who are willing to speak their mind about other active players.

Appearing on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Stroud offered a frank assessment regarding the completed career of Eli Manning and the soon-to-be-concluded run of Aaron Rodgers. Stroud said he would rather have Manning’s career.
You want the rings, dog,” Stroud said, via USA Today. “Eli got two.”

But it goes deeper than rings.

“You know what I think it is?” Stroud said, via JetsXFactor.com. “I’ve talked to Tom Brady, about this because he’s a good mentor to me. . . . What he told me is his teammates, and how he treats his teammates. And that’s where I think it falls off. We don’t know how Aaron Rodgers treats his teammates, but you can guarantee that Tom Brady treats his teammates right because how he got those rings.”

Stroud also said that another quarterback who, like Rodgers, has one ring, might have won even more with Rodgers’s supporting cast.

“If you give Matthew Stafford a chance like Aaron Rodgers had, I guarantee you he might have had more rings,” Stroud said. “I think he would have like three or four.”

Stroud tried to tread somewhat lightly on the teammate issue, especially since we’ve picked up some anecdotal evidence over the years regarding Rodgers’s relationships with teammates and others in his inner circle. Greg Jennings and Jermichael Finley, for example, have been candid. And even though Stroud opted for something less than full candor, he surely said more than enough to catch the ear of the notoriously sensitive New York quarterback.

Rodgers undoubtedly will find a way to respond. He won’t be able to help himself.

This hurts more than usual criticism because the call is coming from inside the house. Rodgers can’t brush off Stroud’s words as those of a hater who never accomplished anything in sports. He’ll have to meet Stroud on the merits, unless he can come up with another way to dismiss Stroud’s assessment.

Meanwhile, the Texans face the Jets on Halloween night, in New York. Hopefully, C.J. will be wearing an Eli Manning jersey as he walks into the stadium.

Agreed, after all Hunter did lead the NFL in sacks.

Diggs was also a big signing, but not as big as Hunter. Hunter/WA with Stingley and the other talented CB's equal a top 5defense if they can stay healthy. I'm thinking if there's a shortcoming in the defense (Say the LB's get hurt) it will be addressed at the trade deadline.

We used to take 288 to OST to McNee to get in thee Yellow lot. It went pretty fast. We could leave Kingwood at 10:00 and be in the parking Yellow lot by 10:45. Then we started going to the Blue lot, 288 to Holly Hall was a fairly quick way to go.

Don’t think it affects much. A lot of players in the league respect him and want to compete against him. That’s fine. As long as he isn’t in massage parlors harassing and assaulting anyone, don’t really see an issue. He embarrassed quite a few defenses as a rookie. Guys wanting to compete against him isn’t and won’t be a cause and effect of offseason podcasts.

These are athletes who are being paid millions of dollars to play a game. Bulletin board material is a myth at this level. Players talk trash. That is not a new thing. I’ll take a guy who is sure of himself and wants to compete over a guy who mopes and hangs a towel over his head when adversity hits.
We call this Kansas City Derrick.

If WA/Hunter get after Rodgers this wont be an issue.

Trash talking during a game and prior to a game are two different things. You don’t give the opposing teams any more reasons to prepare and have an incentive to want to beat you. Just look at the Texans game December 17, 2023.

Bulletin board material is a reality. I don’t know why you would think otherwise.

It’s a thing for maybe Mahomes and Brady where you could tangibly say that. Other than that, it’s not a thing. Seriously. Guys are paid to play. Words are not a bigger motivator than money. ALOT of these guys are friends off of the field anyway.

Now, regarding Rodgers? I’ll bet you many players in the league, MANY players feel the same regarding the comments. You probably have players on the Jets wishing they could play with CJ. Hell, you have Micah Parsons begging to come play here. CeeDee Lamb’s mother publicly posted that CJ is a better QB than Dak. This is a non issue. Players throughout the league love CJ.

Agree to disagree. Players at that level are ultra competitive.

You quoted players from a completely different era from 30 years ago. And again I say, bulletin board material TODAY is a myth. I’ll give you an example of something today. Guys aren’t trying to constantly hurt Deshaun Watson because of his words. Players hate him because of his actions.
