The original Dallas Texans (1952), who played one season and has unofficial ties to the start of the Baltimore, now Indianapolis Colts, also played in the Cotton Bowl. So the city of Dallas proper has only had NFL football for 12 seasons, the last of which was 1970.

*edit - Cowboys did play 2 games at the Cotton Bowl in the 71 season before Texas Stadium opened in late October.

So then it looks like the Cowboys and Chiefs (origionally the Texans) began their existence & histories at the same time.

Dallas Texans began in 1959, Cowboys in 1960

Founded and started playing are 2 different things. Their 1st game was Sept. 10, 1960. The Houston Texans were founded in 1999 but nobody says that’s when they started. It’s 2002.

Honestly I don’t know why we’re having this conversation.

I just found it interesting that it was only after the AFL was formed did the NFL decide to grant an expansion team to Dallas to compete with Lamar Hunt

I guess that's how serious a threat the AFL was to the NFL. Which it was. No one can touch the NFL now.

Does anyone remember Bang cartoon? When I see stories like this, I think of that site/videos..

I wish they were still around. I think about all the great cartoons we've missed out on given the story lines in this modern era.. They would've had a field day with Watson, years of content. I miss that type of humor these days (honest, politically incorrect, and unapologetic humor) the guys who made those videos had talent and they were funny as hell.

The NFL has officially been Nikefied.

We knew it would happen, from the moment Nike won the apparel contract from Reebok. Given the proliferation of uniform combinations at the college level — especially at Oregon, the alma mater of Nike founder Phil Knight — it was just a matter of time before Nike turned the NFL uniform into multiple different head-to-toe ensembles.

The only thing that kept it from happening was the NFL’s clunky (but useful, for these purposes) rule limiting players to one helmet per year, for concussion purposes. Once the league decided to double that number to two, it was just a matter of time before it became three. And now four. And maybe five.

Yes, as of 2025, teams will be allowed to use three different helmets. Three! For those of us who love the traditional (and instantly recognizable) looks, it’s a potential nightmare.

It’s also a potential cash cow for teams. They’ll come up with new helmets. Ardent fans will buy every one of them.

And I’ll admit that some of the alternate helmets are great. For plenty of teams, the alternate/throwback uniform is better than the base gear.
Still, the number of helmets and jerseys will continue to grow. It was inevitable. I’ll accept it, even if I don’t have to like it.
 
Watson would do well to learn when to keep his mouth shut.

The NFL season is months away, but the Pittsburgh Steelers already have extra incentive to defeat their rival, the Cleveland Browns. On his podcast, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson went over some old tape of his against the Steelers. In doing so, he revealed a bit too much of his opinion.

The Steelers play a base 3-4 defense with zone coverage on the back end. This leaves the secondary vulnerable, but their pass rush tends to get home given they prioritize edge rushers like TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith. However, Watson is hyper-focused on the Steelers secondary in his review, and suggests the base 3-4 actually gives him the upper hand.

"The biggest thing is get the defense in what we want to get the defense in, and that's a base defense, especially a team like Pittsburgh. When they're in a base defense, they don't play too many coverages. They're kind of very schemed (as to) how they play. So once we had this situation, alright cool, we got them exactly how we want it, and then you just run the play and react," Watson said.

Watson ended up completing a pass on this play, but the Browns would fumble later in the possession. While Pittsburgh often leaves its secondary vulnerable, they also had one of the highest turnover ratios in the league last season, forcing 27 on the year. Clearly, their method pays off, even if they give up chunk plays from time to time.

The Steelers base 3-4 defense has been a known commodity around the NFL for some time. However, as Watson fails to note in his diagnosis of one play, Pittsburgh tends to force its opponents into unenviable positions more often than not. The Browns know this more than most, as Watson has found out the hard way on multiple occasions.

By describing the Steelers defense as inadequate, even on one play, Watson did Pittsburgh a favor heading into the 2024 campaign. What else is new?
 
OJ Simpson has died of prostate cancer. He was initially diagnosed in Feb and was being treated. It is surprising that Simpson would not have been diagnosed much earlier before such advanced stage. It appears that Simpson did not keep up with routine medical checks for this to be the case.

Rashee Rice surrenders to authorities, posts $40,000 bond

Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice, who faces eight felony charges in the aftermath of a street race that sparked a six-car accident, has surrendered to authorities in Dallas.

Via WFAA, he has been booked and released on $40,000 bond.

Rice has not yet been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries. That could still happen, resulting in more felony charges.

Neither the Chiefs nor the NFL have taken action against Rice. As explained on Thursday’s PFT Live, perhaps one or both should.

The facts are clear. The cars — both of which were registered to Rice — were racing. They endangered the lives of others.

SMU has already suspended Theodore Knox, the driver of the car. The NFL and the Chiefs look bad, frankly, in comparison.

Why not suspend Rice indefinitely pending resolution of the charges? Whether he’s on paid leave or unpaid leave, it’s a serious situation that compels the league to send a message to other players who might be tempted to get behind the wheel of a car and do things that create risk of serious injury both for himself and for others.

Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice was driving 119 miles per hour just seconds before his crash on a Dallas highway, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The newspaper, which acquired Rice’s arrest affidavit, stated that the Lamborghini Urus driven by Rice was going 119 mph some 4.5 seconds before he collided with other cars. The Corvette involved in the crash was going 116 mph, according to the affidavit, “but had slowed to 91 miles per hour about 1.5 seconds before,” the Morning News said.

The speed limit on the highway, according to the Morning News, was 70 miles per hour.

Even though O.J. Simpson was somehow acquitted for double murder, a civil jury found that he did indeed kill Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. A $33.5 million verdict was entered against him.

With years of interest, the amount due now exceeds $100 million, according to DailyMail.com. And the lawyers plan to attempt to collect by targeting Simpson’s estate.

“We have to start over here,” attorney David Cook told DailyMail.com. “We’re going to work on that. There might be something out there. We’ve had this problem for a long long time. It could be in a trust, it could be probate. It could be all gone.”

As of June 2022, when the amount due was only $96 million, Simpson had paid a mere $133,000.

Simpson’s NFL pension was exempt from collection. If he has cash or other property in his estate, the families of those he killed might be able to get a little more justice.

And, yes, Simpson killed them. His death doesn’t change that. He had the ability to live a full life and to die of natural causes. Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman did not. Because of him.

He killed them. A civil court reached that conclusion. A criminal court should have, but the combination of a botched prosecution, a high standard of proof, and a dream team of lawyers who were able to conjured reasonable doubt kept Simpson from dying behind bars.
