Week 12: Jacksonville Jaguars vs Houston Texans. TIE FOR FIRST!!!!

I was watching the Chiefs and Eagles last night.

Thoughts on the game and AFC.

Travis Kelce is looking old. He is currently at his lowest YPC of his career. Remember he is 35. Mahomes regression? Jalen Hurts isn't my MVP!

CHIEFS OUTPLAYED THE Eagles IMO, but Kelsey needs to decide if he wants to be an NFL TE or Swift's Boyfriend & international celeb.

People are struggling, so spending $600-$1000+ to take your family to a football game is beyond a luxury for many of us.
Wife and I went to the game this past Sunday. I’ll list roughly what it cost us, it’s inflated because we do two nights in a hotel.

Tickets - $200 (2, and I buy from a friend, no fees)
Gas to and from - $100
Hotel - $285 (2 nights)
Concessions - $240 (3 drinks her, 4 me)
2 caps, 1 shirt (her) $165
That’s almost a grand. Not counting dinner 2 nights and breakfast Monday morning.
Still close to $800 without hotel.
I still don’t know how they get away with the prices of concessions. It’s a ridiculous mark up!

That's why people do the tailgate thing.
And yet others (myself included), do it from the lounge chair.
I would love to do a tailgate one day, looks like a hoot.

On to more serious matters.
It seems every week is a huge moment for this team and even more so than the week before but this time it is different.
If Texans win this game, they assume the #1 position in the AFCS - lose and we fall back 2 games and likely out of the wild card (at this point).
That makes this game hugely important and is the ultimate litmus test for this team so far this season.
Let's see what our boys are made of - hopefully it's the sterner stuff!
Go Texans! :gotexans1 :fans:
Oh, and I'm not predicting a scoreline this time - but I think Texans squeak out a win!

What is the health status of Texans OL? Has Juice Scruggs been cleared to practice yet? If not it’s gotta be something more serious than a hamstring. How is Tunsil knee, will he practice Wednesday? Thought Howard got nicked up against the Cardinals? Mason has been solid and biggest surprise, in a good way has been Michael Deiter. Great effort by entire group to pick up assignments and overcome injuries, but we need those other linemen to comeback soon.
Just checked the Texans website and still no news on Scruggs. Recently discussed in the Injury Discussion Thread. CnD says Scruggs simply had a setback in his return. See post #66.

I feel strongly about this game and despite the fact that I have almost no knowledge of the state of these two teams I think it's pretty clear that the Texans are going to win. Primarily I think that because that's what I want to happen.

I think a good explanation for the feeling among some Texans fans that the Jags are the better team right now involves rebuilds. They "should" be farther along in their rebuild than we are. We started our most recent rebuild the moment Bill O'Brien was shown the door. The Jaguars on the other hand have been rebuilding since approximately 2003. It's easy to see how that can be confusing.

Wait what? Drinks are 35$ on average? The US are crazy...

Going into the game with the Jags we are ranked 9th!!

Let's Go Texans!!! :bravo:
Where do you rank "Touchdown Wire" power ranking to others like ESPN or NFL.com?

They have the Texans better than Bills, Bengals, Browns, & Chargers.

The Texan moved up one spot to 9. The Jags moved up two spots to 7

Bengals dropping from 4 to 11 probably accounts most for the Texans & Bills moving up one spot.

This game looks like a toss-up to me. Jags have been better on the road than at home so far. The home loss to the Texans was a wake up call. They won't take the Texans lightly this go round. Schedule for the Texans beyond this game looks easier on paper than the Jags, so a Texans win here makes this more of an uphill climb for Jags to win the division. I expect the Jags to try and establish the run and blitz Stroud when possible, as that seems to bring out the rookie in him. Stroud has outplayed Lawrence by a wide margin so far. Week to week league, either team can win. Should be a great game, and as always, let's hope its injury and penalty free.

AFC South supremacy will be on the line in Week 12 when the Houston Texans (6-4) host the Jacksonville Jaguars (7-3).

Jacksonville was back on track in a blowout win over Tennessee, thanks to Trevor Lawrence slinging it all over the field and the defense putting the pressure on rookie Will Levis. It was the performance the Jaguars needed after the thumping they took from San Francisco the week prior.
Houston continues to be one of the rising teams in the NFL, as the Texans have rattled off three-straight wins in what is turning into a possible playoff bid for the young team. Even though C.J. Stroud had an off-day, the team rallied around him to knock off the Arizona Cardinals as they head into a big-time matchup in H-Town.

PROP TALK: These are the best prop bets for NFL games this week

Serious question but What is “tailgate”???

One day I would like to attend a game

I want the Texans to win, but even if they lose, they're not out of the play-off race. 7 teams get in.

Every game we have left is winnable. The 2 against Tenn should be gimme wins. But, not going to say we win both. We could easily make the playoffs (something a few months ago I would not say). To do so, we just have to play like we have been the last 3 weeks. Maybe even a bit better so the games are not so close. And last, stay healthy. If we can do that, I think we have a good shot to get in.

Unfortunately, every game they have is also losable. I don't think either extreme will happen but it's best not to get too high so you lose focus.

Different direction..
what happened to Sheldon Rankins against theCardinals? I cannot locate any stats or even playing although he did not appear to be injured. After his three sacks I was expecting to focus on him but don't recall him being in the game. Nobody else has mentioned this that I know of. What am I missing?

He played 39 snaps, 64% of the defensive snaps, but didn't register any tackles or anything.

I was concerned last week about the injuries on this team and they overcame them and I put this down to pure effort - Texans play hard for coach Ryans and that counts for a lot.
We do get some players back from injury this week but will they be rusty?
This game is huge for us for one other reason if this team has playoff aspirations - a loss means we lose that tie breaker.
Our Oline must continue to ball out and give Stroud time to work his magic and Singletary room to move.
Both teams are better now so no advantage for us there.
Fortunately for us they also are missing a couple of key players.
This one is going to be interesting.

There does seem to be an increase in blitzes on Stroud and this may be due to more tape on him but (good) blitzes generally work against all QB's.
The patchwork oline has been a revelation - especially in pass pro.
Our D front has been a pleasant surprise for us with the addition of Rankins and could put more pressure on Lawrence than expected. Will Anderson has quietly been having himself an excellent rookie season and must be in the running for DROY.
Both teams are improved since the last meeting and there is a lot riding on this for both sides.
Jags are a more settled unit, but this Texans squad is riding a wave right now under coach Ryans so this should be a cracker of a game.

The last time someone gave me tickets we spent about $300 and I live 30 mins from the stadium.

Texans continued to regress, most dramatically post O'Brian because there was a vacuum filled by Jack Easterby. Now the minute management cut ties with him you can argue the rebuild began. However, it began with a whimper (minimal return/gain stuck in the bottom). DeMeco Ryans brought impact as Head Coach and roster builder to fit his profile, and that's why players want to play here, for him. To me, that is officially when the rebuild for Houston Texans began. Jags had already selected #1 overall in back to back NFL Drafts. They had their franchise QB long before CJ plus all the other picks they acquired. This meteoric rise is due directly to DeMeco (should be coach of the year) from people he hired on his staff to picks & acquisitions going forward. Nick is now Texans facilitator; well-paid facilitator might add. This dynamic will play out for as long as sustainable. but for me if comes down to losing Caserio or Slowick, well, see you later Nick.

With Pierce back practicing fully I am interested in seeing how the team will deploy him in this offense. Singletary has earned the RB1 role with back to back 100 yard games. But Pierce has been a committee back his entire career going back to college and should be comfortable splitting time.

I just hope the time in the training room has allowed him to take a mental step back and be coached to be most effective in this offense. Stop fitting a square peg into a round hole and start being a true ZBS RB.

I don’t know why he’d wait until mid season to seriously train to be a ZBS RB. He is what he is, I’ve watched him run straight towards a pile of 350+ pounders for a TFL instead of cutting left or right for a long gain countless times this season. I’m afraid he just isn’t a fit for this offense. I hope he can get his act together and ball out, but I’ve moved on from him and would rather let Singletary keep ballin.

How soon we forget his rookie season...
The coaches need to revisit that and use it to their advantage when they put him in - sure, teams will know what's coming, but they knew last year too.

Agreed. Moreso, the time off the field and watching Singletary be successful/OL gel will help the coaching staff find a role for Pierce. He’s too talented not to be given opportunities.

IMO, I think he’ll be the hammer. When teams know it’s a run late in the game and their defense is gassed. Let fresh Pierce run angry!

I remember Steve Slaton's 1,282 yard rookie season. He didn't have half that total for the rest of his career.

RB's are a dime a dozen in the NFL anymore. That's why it's getting harder and harder for them to get paid. Sure, there's a few elites, CMC, Henry, Barkley for example, but for the most part you can almost plug any competent RB in and if your system is good enough, that RB will get it done.

But there are also backs that don't have the vision, patience, quickness to the hole either. I don't think David Johnson would have done any better anywhere else than he did here.

In the case of the Texans, it looks to me like Singletary has better vision and patience than Pierce. Pierce did have a good rookie season but he had a lot of yards after contact. This year he seems to be looking for that contact rather than running to an open space. I don't know what's changed. Or maybe nothing has changed and Pierce was just lucky to power his way to the yards he did have last year. I mean the day he played his last game last year the Texans were still somewhere around 26th in rushing yards per game.

I don’t think Pierce has the vision to do well in a ZBS scheme. It’s also pretty hard to OL that can play ZBS and power run game.

It's somewhat odd that he couldn't get going with roughly the same line - surely the scheme to "pound the rock" isn't that much different?🤔

Running ZBS, the RB has to have patience, the vision to see the cut back seam, and the speed to exploit it. In power running, there’s a predetermined gap for the RB to hit.
Pierce appears to be literally aiming at linemen and running into them. IMO, he’s better suited for a gap scheme, which is what the Texans ran last season.

Has he ever played in a ZBS before? Reading blocks is a skill that needs to develop over time.

Agreed, if he doesn't have the vision it ain't going to work. He hasn't demonstrated the vision or the patience, but when we saw him trying to acclimate to the system the OL was also going through their issues.

It will be interesting to see how he does behind the current OL.

Has Sanders played yet? I haven’t seen him or seen any Texas stats on him. If he looks anything like a third rounder it would put a little different look to the Anderson trade imho.

If you had told me at the beginning of the season the Texans didn't win our division Id have said "Of course they don't, rookie players and coaches... you cant expect to go from #2 over all to playoffs."

Now, to NOT win the AFCS is inexcusable (although I wouldn't be to angry considering expectations for this season) cause IMO given where we sit now...... the division is theirs to lose. Beat the Jags again.... and hold it (which SHOULD be doable given the remaining schedule but.... we DID lose to the Panthers so Im not giving them any wins until they earn them... but the winnable games are there)

Unfortunately, every game they have is also losable. I don't think either extreme will happen but it's best not to get too high so you lose focus.

Very, very true. I hope Meco has the team down to earth and not stuck on the wins we have been pulling out. Last thing we want is to think we can beat everyone and make dumb mistakes and think/try too much. We have to stick to the game plan and go out and execute it. Doesn't mean you are going to win but it does mean you don't get out of the "smart way to play" and into a game of poor and forced plays. Which end up costing you.
