Texans random thought of the day

and people wonder and doubt that houston fans are called fickle...unbelievable.
What's not true about my post.

Are you a minority owner? If no then the Texans are the team you root for, not your team as in own the team. You have nothing to do with there success or failure. Therefore they aren't your team.

If I owned the team the product on the field would take priority over everything. Can you honestly say the McNair's have a burning desire to bring a championship to this city after 21 yrs?

I don't see the Injury Discussion Thread, so I'm doing it here.

Are we saying that we're possibly going into this game without both Dell AND Woods?

Jeez. This season.
It looks like the team may be playing it safe, giving Woods two more weeks for his ribs to heal. It'll probably be a game day decision but he could play.

Dell was never expected to play with his concussion, but it looks like he was cleared. It wouldn't surprise me if he did. You know he wants to play. The report just says questionable but doesn't rule him out.

Last week Collins was listed as questionable and he played.

This is not speculation! Pierce was drafted for a power scheme. Our run scheme has gone solidly to the ZBS. Pierce's forte is right up the middle of the gut. You hardly see him run to the outside.

Let me stretch out the football fingers.
Damn I missed you all. Let’s talk about scheme and vision here for a moment.

@CloakNNNdagger is right here and it’s something that is frustrating to watch but a part of staff/roster turnover with new regimes. Pierce is an excellent Power Running back and would excel with Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New England, etc. Coming out of Florida - his vision was one of the things that worried scouting departments (not his natural ability). As a firm supporter of a ZBS/Shanahan/Kubiak/Slowik offense, vision is imperative to making the running scheme work, and why numerous “less talented” backs excel (because of exceptional timing / vision / understanding of what the offensive line is doing against certain fronts.) Watching Arian Foster / Terrell Davis / Clinton Portis run the ZBS Stretch is one of the most beautiful forms of football artistry. I repeat, this is not what Pierce is - he is a battering ram that is told to run in A gap, and he runs in A gap hard.

Singletary would be a better running back in this system, but I think the Texans brain trust (NC) is trying to justify the Pierce pick as well as keeping with status quo of shown talent from prior regimes. Looking ahead, I would love to see the the Texans select Trey Benson out of Florida State who is known for and has shown exceptional vision and one cut ability. I also like Raheim Sanders out of Arkansas as a physical specimen with superb balance and ability to pick running lanes out of a ZBS.

Pierce moving forward would be much better as an inside zone threat out of Shotgun (most of what he did at Florida) and as a pass blocker or as our 12 personnel back on double team blocking runs where he knows he is picking either of the A gaps or potentially a B gap at most. Asking him to choose his lane is asking for what we have seen - running into the back of offensive lineman.

I’m ecstatic that our offense is back in the Shanahan family tree - as I have studied it in depth for much of my adult life - and it’s one of the most beautiful forms of football ever created.

@steelbtexan When I disappeared for this last year I almost latched on with San Francisco in their contract department. They ended up going with an in house candidate but I was one of three finalists out of roughly 200 people. I was John Lynch’s favorite candidate and we hung out in his office for quite a while watching practice while he dipped and listened to Country Music. I never felt more at home haha. Getting that “no” and that they were going another direction was one of the toughest no’s I ever received - and I didn’t want to move to California anyway - but was going to do it for the opportunity of working with the best ran organization in football. Having Demeco and Slowik here has reinvigorated my Texans fandom, and damn it feels good.

Hope all the Texans family here is well and it’s time to catch back up with you all.

Welcome back, sorry you didn’t get the job. I’m sure another door will open up for you on another team.

Agreed 1000%. Even Boone fits the ZBS scheme better that Pierce.

The first three runs were not ZBS.

The first run, Howard pulls from the left side & blocks a guy on the right. Pierce follows the FB through the hole for a big gain.

The second run, Howard & Tunsil pull to make blocks on the right side as well. 4 yard gain as ATL's defense swarmed to the hole Tunsil made.

Third run might have been called a zone stretch.

4th run, could be inside zone, I don't think so, but could be. Patterson & Howard makes a huge hole the FB blows through it makes a good block, Pierce is untouched for 5 yards.

The 5th run... doesn't look like a stretch, Fant whiffs on a block, Pierce is dropped in the backfield.

All teams run the zone stretch to some degree. I don't see the Texans running a "ZBS" at least not as religiously as Kubiak's teams.

I’d have no issue if the Texans made a play to take RB, Charles Edwards-Helaire off the Chiefs hands for a RD6 (If Chiefs cover some the remaining salary) or RD7 (If the Texans are taking the remaining balance of his contract). It seems like he’s fallen out of favor in KC due to injuries. Maybe a change of scenery could do some good. Chiefs appear to be open to moving him before the trade deadline.

Based on his good tape…..he looks like a natural back for the WC offense b/c of his vision and ability to cut and run at full speed. He’s also an above average receiver out of the backfield. It wouldn’t be a big risk to see if a new home and Ryans/Slowick could help him find that 2020 production again.

Tunsil didn't look right today vs the Saints. Saints DE Granderson is a good player. But no way he manhandles a healthy Tunsil.

Agreed. I don’t know what’s going on with Tunsil’s bad knee, but if his performance is being effected that badly, then they should IR him. Either sh!t or get off the pot.

If he is not healthier after the bye I kind of expect Tytus to play LT and Juice to be back and try LG. Agreed he did not look like himself on several pass plays. Dude never looks like a mauler on running plays, but those misses on pass pro is not the guy we know

Regarding Houston’s 2024 cap - based on Spotrac - we have 40 team members under contract for roughly 168-169 million. With the cap for 2024 set at 256 million, that leaves us roughly 87-88 million (minus what we have to set aside for our draft collateral) to make moves internally and externally. That ranks the Texans 4th behind Chicago, Tennessee, and New England, and based on our quarterback situation - makes us the most appealing destination of open cap heavy teams.

Talking internally - we may or may not bring back Rankins, Griffin, Schultz, Fant, Singletary, Perryman, Thomas among a few others that are on 1 year prove it deals.

I know you aren’t the biggest Clemson fan - and remember I’m a Gamecock - but I want Tee Higgins as Stroud has shown an affinity for big bodied receivers and I believe Higgins is a top 10 WR in the league. Christian Wilkins and Danielle Hunter would also be big pieces for our rapid rebuild. If the Panthers move on from Burns, that is another name I am definitely intrigued by. I am not as high on Sweat as some, but I could see that being a play if we miss on Hunter and Burns.

I could also see Demeco interested in Winfield though I am not fond of his build. I would prefer Jeremy Chinn for his position utility and ability to play the Star / Dimebacker role.

Going into the draft we need to work on the defense front 7 and weapons. I would like to see the Texans attack both through free agency to allow the BPA approach once the draft hits so we aren’t drafting for need. If we can get Higgins as well Hunter or Sweat, I would look at Jer’zhan Newton for the IDL as our Donald / Quinnen Williams. If we get Wilkins and Higgins then I would look at Laiatu or Chop Robinson. If we get two dline pieces in free agency I want to see Harrison Jr (if possible) Brock Bowers (our version of Kyle Pitts) or Malik Nabers.

In the second round I’m looking corner or safety or maybe HB ( CB Josh Newton TCU, CB Nate Wiggins Clemson, S Caleb Bullock USC (my favorite of this bunch as our single high while Pitre runs in the box) or potentially HB Trey Benson.

In the third round I like Raheim Sanders if we don’t go HB in second, Xavier Legette WR Gamecocks (if he makes it this far) Troy Franklin WR Oregon, Malachi Corley WKU (Deebo mold). Sanders and Corley are especially high on my wish list in third / fourth round.

I’ll leave it at this for now because this is just a quick list and not my end all be all (nor my deep dive list that will get tighter as the season moves along). This really is a first glance style nod to guys that I put a pin in to follow closer.

Good to talk shop again.

I can see O'Brien in NE interested in a vet but don't see Belichick trading a (now) top 10. If Higgins could be had for their round 2 much more likely.

A beer at NRG Stadium will only set fans back an average of $6.00, which is the third lowest in the entire league.
The AVERAGE is $6.00??? I haven't been since 2019 so unless they've come waaaaay down on beer prices since, I'm calling BS.

That’s why I don’t attend anymore. NFL has priced peasants like me out of the stadium!
I don’t attend anymore because a lot of jokers can’t handle their liquor. And I hate that traffic leaving out. Shoots I don’t even go to bars either to watch the game. I rather fire up the grill at the house and watch the game in peace. Much cheaper that way. Lol

I'm a silly man who never learns but this bye week I'm turning my eye towards playoffs, both the wildcard and divisional race.

Chargers losing that game to the Cowboys certainly helps. Jacksonville potentially being without Lawrence and losing to the Saints on thursday would also be a nice bonus.
Unless they're playing an AFCS team, the Cowboys winning is never a good thing

I do not harbor the same hatred of Dallas sports that many Houstonians do. Probably because I was born in the mid 90's so I have no memory of them being all that good.

I prefer it when they lose but them winning last night helped the Texans playoff chances and a fans dislike of another team should never override their fandom of their own team.

Wasn't sure where to put this so figured I'd just throw it here:

Many were upset at us cutting King but I can't say we've really missed him and the Steelers haven't been enamored with him either. I thought it was an odd move to cut him at the time as well, but chose to trust the coaching staff's decision.
I couldn't care less about King. My issue was that they cut King & kept Murray.
