CJ Stroud is having one of the best seasons a rookie QB has EVER seen. Stroud now has more passing yards (1,461) than Josh Allen and Joe Burrow. More passing attempts without an INT (186) than ANY quarterback in the league. A better passer rating (98.4) than Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, and Trevor Lawrence. The Texans have themselves a Top-10 QB on their hands
Am I correct that Stroud hasn't been sacked in the past three games?
He's getting rid of the ball quick and has made good decisions to throw the ball away
I really am happy that CJ fell to Houston. CJ is lucky to be with DeMeco and Bobby. There's a solid nucleus of good young players and I don't sense any amount of dissension on the team. Carolina, on the other hand, appears to be a dumpster fire.
I can only wonder if Houston had been picking first, would they have also picked Bryce first or were they CJ all the way?

It was 11 sacks, Ravens with 5 and the Colts with 6.

Man, I watched back the tape or TV Broadcast of the game.
CJ played much better than I thought.
Two bad throws all game.
1) Communication error to Dell on 3rd down
2)Ball to Woods that Bates almost picked(he was just a little late)
He really played well. The ball came out when it should have. He was consistently taking what the defense was giving him. He missed Dell one time over the middle on a play, but Dell was the 3rd read on the play and was one of the few times he was pressured.
Our offense was largely hurt due to execution issues.
Woods and Schultz had drops on third down.
Another drive stalled via tip. Ball was thrown with incredible anticipation but the DL just made a play.
Atlanta had a great game plan of putting as many DB's as possible around the sticks to cutoff the post and slants.
Texans would have put up a ton of points yesterday if they could move the ball on the ground.
Also feel the Texans failed to take advantage of screens. They should have screened the Falcons to death on 2nd and long.
One other thing, they need a real speed threat on the outside to take pressure off of Nico and Woods. Bates was incredible yesterday and was constantly baiting Stroud.

I didn't think Stroud played badly but it felt like he played a very timid game which is not what we've typically seen from him so far. Especially early in the game on 3rd down. I don't know if guys weren't getting open or what but on the first four 3rd downs where we attempted to pass he checked it down well short of the first down marker. It looked like on all of those he had room to escape and extend the play and see what was there but he went right for the 4-5 yard dump offs. That's great on 1st and 2nd down but in the future I'd really like to see him work the play a little longer and see if a WR can find some space.
I don't know if it was a coaching point or what but seems like he was trying to play it by the book. Like if you wrote a textbook called "How to play QB" you'd probably teach exactly what he did. Take the checkdown and punt the ball away. But we didn't draft him 2nd overall to play like a textbook, we know he can extend plays and make things happen on the run so I hope this doesn't become a trend.

I rewatched tape this morning.
It was covered. Looked like he almost was told to live to fight another day on these.
Falcons ran a lot of double high man. They were bracketing the X/Y receivers and rushing 3....
Not a coverage you are going to run when its 3rd and short or manageable.
Texans have to do a better job early in the series.

There are no assurances that screens would've worked. Atlanta has a fast defense.
I can't wait to see the QBSchool this week. I want to see what those guys were doing after the snap.
To me, it's like a jab. It's not about the jab working or not working, it's about setting the opponent up. If we're running for 3.0 ypc or whatever, or our QB is constantly seeing pressure, those screens open things up. Pitches, tosses, getting our RB outside, opens things up. Slows the defense down because they don't "know" where you're going with the ball. They have to be prepared for everything.

Quite honestly i thought that after the short Baker Mayfield experience they had where they had a qb on the shorter side, & coming off the Cam Newton era where they had tremendous success, there was no way in hell they were going to select Young when they moved up. Even if they wanted to run the Cam Newton era back, they could've likely stayed put and Richardson would've probably fell to them at least. When the move up was announced, i was almost certain it was to ensure they would get CJ...which would've been much to my dismay. Glad they fumbled the ball on the 1 inch line tho!
Agreed, but sometimes you have to break tendencies and use the pass to setup the run. Slowik is running the offense like Shanny is running the 49ers offense. Difference is the 49ers OL isn't on their 3rd LG/2nd C/3rd RT. They also dont have McCaffrey/Kittle/Aiyuk/Deebo to get the ball too. Although I do think the weapons Stroud has to work with are underrated.
I see what you're saying. But what if Cj is looking at the defense & doesn't like what he's seeing? Against Jacksonville & Pittsburgh he took his chances, but against Atlanta & what he's been coached all week about their secondary, I could see a few extra checking out of a called pass play on first down.
I don't think it's anything to worry about, just something he needs to work through.
We may not have the number one seed; that's all.

Now Tepper is a real ‘involved in big decisions’ owner. McNair is a rank amateur in comparison. All owners have some involvement, but the selection of Young was largely Tepper. I’d bet my lunch money that if you gave Reich an extra large mug of truth serum, he’d tell you that CJ was his guy. He totally fits the Andrew Luck profile for one thing. Not that’s the end all, be all, but it’s certainly a bread crumb.

If that's true, then that's weak sauce from Reich. You signed on to this, it's your job to turn lemons into lemonade.
I was surprised then that Reich got another HC gig as soon as he did. He's never proven he could improve a QB's play.
Andrew Luck is a rugby player. I never watched him at Stanford, so I don't know what his style was then. But in the NFL, he was always way too physical of a runner for me.
Cj is looking like an old school pocket passer. He's not a statue, far from it. But he's old school. & I like that.
Granted, before the draft I wasn't seeing bonafide franchise QB.

They rushed only 3 and dropped 8 into coverage at least 8 times.
That's something I had told you last week.
If the opponent can generate some pressure with just 3 guys, it makes things harder for the QB.
Regardless, I didn't see anything exotic on the video. My uncle's girlfriend's mother's mailman said the falcons would rush 3 & drop 8 in coverage.
Still, I was expecting to see O'Sullivan expose some freaky exotic defense.
I didn't say, "I didn't see the stuff 76Texans was talking about in that video."

Bottom line CJ played solid for the most part. Exotic defense or not.

Rush 3 and drop 8 is exotic to a rookie QB, more so than a 5-man blitz or a zone dog.
Look at the second play on that clip, shortly after the 3-min mark.
It was not just a Tampa 2 (with the LB dropping back to become the middle safety), but also with the DT in the mìddle short hole.
Stroud read not just how the MIKE open, but also how the slot corner (circled in Magenta) overplay the outside for a nice completion.
That's next level QB.
The QB School guy/coach called it "surgical".

I don't feel sorry for their fans but I feel sorry for Bryce. He's a likable kid. I think Bryce can play, although I doubt he's ever going to be an all-pro. Based on their apparent plethora of needs, they probably should NOT have traded the farm to get Bryce. They don't have a first-round pick next year but maybe they can build through free agency and find some diamonds in the latter rounds. I'm thrilled they didn't take CJ!
i'm pretty sure I was the only one who said that the Ohio St. Oline was a little overrated and how Stroud never missed his no. 1 receiver when the guy was shutdown due to injury pretty much from the start of the season.
Among the Olinemen drafted, the only one that looks pretty good as a rookie was the one that I endorsed.
Some people tend to overlook how a QB can make his offensive line look better, especially when they were trying to find fault with the QB.

I am just thrilled we have your guy. He is the real deal and in a system that will maximize his talent. May take a few years to build a roster around him. But we are headed in the right direction!
I don't think they were overrated, at least not by OSU fans. OSU's run-blocking has been subpar for years under Day, which isn't necessarily surprising as he's a "pass first" playcaller. Last year's pass protection was excellent, although they did give up 4 sacks to Georgia, although none to mutant Jalen Carter.
