Joel Bitonio: Eagles took cheap shots at Deshaun Watson in joint practice

Browns left guard Joel Bitonio was not happy with players on the Eagles following Tuesday’s joint practice, accusing them of “cheap shots.”

Specifically, Bitonio accused Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat of knocking the ball out of the hand of Browns quarterback
Deshaun Watson, a no-no in practice, when quarterbacks are not to be touched.

You’re not supposed to that,” Bitonio said, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

Bitonio said quarterbacks are supposed to be off-limits on the practice field.

“I mean it’s just in our practice, you protect the quarterback,” he said. “You don’t want to come close to the quarterback, you don’t want to take cheap shots, things like that where there might’ve been a couple of questionable plays both ways today.”

Tuesday was the second of two joint practices between the Eagles and Browns, and Bitonio said it’s good they’re not doing three days of practice.

“Oh yeah,” he said. “I mean that’s why you do two days because three days it’d be a blood bath the last day, so even two days gets a little bit chippy the second day. You go back, you watch the film, you’re like, oh, we’ve got to do this better, or they got to do this better, and the next day’s going to be a little bit more ramped up.”

The Eagles and Browns will meet for a preseason game on Thursday night.

Cleveland Beat Writer Down On Browns' Passing Game, QB Deshaun Watson: 'Completely Unimpressive'
  • Matthew Marczi
  • 4 min read

Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson attempted just three passes in last week’s preseason loss to the Washington Commanders, along with three rushing attempts. It was a limited showing consisting of just one drive, which ended on a turnover on downs from Washington’s one-yard line.

He did not play last night, however, leaving a broader analysis of his play up to this point inaccessible to those who have not been at the Browns’ training camp. At least one who has did not come away impressed with what he’s seen.

The Athletic reporter Zac Jackson wrote critically of Jackson and the passing game recently, albeit not without the caveats of the limited availability of some of their top talents like WR Amari Cooper. Still, there was enough there to question in his ‘stock down’ assessment.

The passing game has been completely unimpressive”, he wrote. “Anything that involves Deshaun Watson remaining in the pocket has been an adventure, and not since early in camp have we seen strings of consecutive completions in any 11-on-11 period”.

Allowing that there have been some impressive throws, he added that there has been little consistency present in the passing game, and very little happening down the field beyond 10 yards. Yet not everybody agrees with that interpretation.

Aditi Kinkhabwala, for example, said that Watson is “So different from a year ago. ‘Night and day’ is the phrase that I used for my husband, who did not want to hear it from me. But he just is so clearly more comfortable”. She added that the Browns have truly built the offense around him this year and what he likes, and it has shown.

The veteran quarterback has said that he hopes to get a longer look during Cleveland’s final preseason game after sitting out for most of the work thus far through three games. Obviously the Browns have decided to use the final game as their ‘warm up’.

They will be facing the Kansas City Chiefs, which should be a good test to try to gauge where he is heading into the regular season. It won’t take the Pittsburgh Steelers long to find out, since they will be hosting Watson and the Browns in the second week of the season, right after they take on the Cincinnati Bengals in the opener.

And then it’s the Baltimore Ravens two weeks later, so he will get an early shot at every team in the division—or perhaps every team in the division will be getting an early shot at him.

The guy who played last night showed potential. I would be scared too if I were him.

That's awesome.

Short of leading the team to a SB trophy, Watson will never be worth (much less earn) that contract.

I'm looking forward to the crippling damage it'll do to the Browns as it eats more and more of their cap and they have no first round talent under rookie contracts.

Kevin Stefanski won’t say for now whether Deshaun Watson will play in preseason finale

During Thursday night’s preseason game in which he didn’t play, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson said he’d like to play a quarter in the preseason finale.

After the game, coach Kevin Stefanski opted not to disclose the plan for the next game, in eight days at Kansas City.

“I’ll let you guys know next week,” Stefanski told reporters. “He’s not supposed to spill the beans. But I’ll let you guys know next week.”

There’s no strategic considerations to protect, since the game doesn’t count. But, apparently, part of the preseason experience includes practicing the same kind of discretion that applies from the moment the calendar flips to the regular season.

Whether Watson plays or not, all eyes will be on him when the offense takes the field against the Bengals and every week after that. The Browns are the league’s biggest wild card for 2023.

They could be Super Bowl contenders. They could miss the playoffs. It all comes down to whether Watson can rewind the clock to 2020 — and whether Stefanski and the coaching staff can get him there.

If it doesn’t happen, Watson won’t be gone in 2023. Those charged with getting the most out of the massive investment the Browns made in Watson could be.

THE ATHLETIC
1 AFC team’s passing reportedly has been ‘completely unimpressive’ in training camp

Every NFL team gets a clean slate during training camp and preseason action. While troubling signs at camp aren’t guaranteed to manifest once the regular season begins, there’s at least some worry with one team in the AFC North — the Cleveland Browns.

According to Zac Jackson of The Athletic, the Browns’ passing game has been “completely unimpressive” through 2023 training camp thus far. Quarterback Deshaun Watson has looked erratic whenever he’s operated from inside the pocket, according to Jackson. Watson has also failed to connect on “strings of consecutive completions” during Browns scrimmages of late.

While Watson has made some brilliant plays at times, Jackson stated that those have been few and far between. The 3-time Pro Bowler has reportedly stayed mostly within 10 yards thus far, with very minimal success going deeper downfield. Opposing defenses during the Browns’ joint practices have also been able to sniff out Watson “locking in” on a favorite receiver for the day.

The good news is that Watson and tight end David Njoku have reportedly found their groove together. Wide receivers Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore have also been limited in their involvement thus far. The updates within the Browns’ appear concerning but are hardly a death knell for the season.

There’s also the possibility that Watson is still trying to put his off-field issues behind him. After serving his suspension last season, the Browns QB did not look like himself during the six contests he played in. Watson finished with 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions for the season. He owned a completion rate of just 58.2% and averaged 183.7 passing yards per game — both career lows.

Mary Kay a little shakey on the Watson confidence........but is quick to minimize and excuse his problems.........

How the Browns feel about Deshaun Watson after Eagles practices; Elijah Moore to practice Sunday; and more: Insider

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Deshaun Watson’s uneven performance on Day 2 of joint practices against the Eagles didn’t move the needle one iota on the Browns’ concern-meter.

They’re just as confident in him coming out of those two days of practice despite two interceptions in team drills on Day 2 and another on which the defender was ruled out of bounds.

The Browns worked on a lot of new quarterback run concepts against the Eagles, because they were able to do so against a different front without Watson getting hit. Some of the concepts will be scrapped after those sessions — against the No. 2 overall defense from 2022 — and some will be adjusted accordingly.

Others the Browns really liked and will incorporate them into their game plans.

The key was testing them against some of the fronts they’ll face this season, and determining what works best. The Browns were much less concerned about Watson getting picked off by safety Reed Blankenship twice on Day 2 and once the day before. They know he’ll have plenty of options in the red zone, and that when they start to draw it up, scoring shouldn’t be a problem.

It also didn’t help matters that tight ends David Njoku and Jordan Akins didn’t have their best two days of practice against the Eagles, and looked much better in the first 12 days of camp. Whether their legs were tired or they were just off, the tight ends should fare much better going forward. In fact, one of those Day 2 picks was intended for Akins in the back of the end zone.

The Browns also didn’t have Harrison Bryant (undisclosed medical condition) but he’ll be back soon. It might not be until after Saturday’s preseason finale in Kansas City, but he should be ready for the opener Sept. 10.

Elijah Moore and Jack Conklin set to practice Sunday

Moore (ribs) and Conklin (concussion) are both set to practice Sunday, at least on a limited basis. Moore suffered the rib injury during the 17-15 loss to the Commanders, and Conklin left Day 1 of the Eagles practices with the head injury.

Moore participated in individual drills on Tuesday in Philly, and will do more on Sunday. It bodes well for him being 100% by the opener.

On Cade York

The Browns genuinely believe that York will work through his slump (3-for-6 in preseason games), like a golfer working on his swing, and that he’ll be fine soon.

They agree with him when he says “confidence will never be an issue for me.” That’s not the problem. If anything, he overthinks things instead of letting his muscle memory and natural ability take over.

The Browns are confident that special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone is the right coach to guide York through the rough patch, and the last thing they want is another kicker breathing down his neck. With the misses coming primarily in games and not practices — he’s made about 98% of his kicks in camp — York might be best served by talking it through with the Browns psychologist if it continues. He’s got what it takes to get the job done, and must clear this hurdle.

Playing time in Kansas City

Watson said during the News5 broadcast of the Browns-Eagles game that he hoped to play about a quarter against the Chiefs next Saturday.

But that will largely depend on what Chiefs coach Andy Reid decides to do with his starters. As Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs, who played the Cardinals on Saturday night, open the season on Sept. 7 against the Lions -- three days before other NFL teams. With the shorter break after the final preseason game, Reid might not want his starters playing much.

Kevin Stefanski and Reid will discuss it this week, and both coaches will proceed accordingly. If Reid plays mostly backups, that will shorten the amount of time Stefanski will play Watson and his starters. He doesn’t need Watson, Amari Cooper or Elijah Moore going against second- and third-teamers who are trying to make a name for themselves.

“I would love to be out there,” Watson told Aditi Kinkhabwala during the broadcast. “I’m not sure how much exactly because I know Kevin (Stefanski) doesn’t want us to play the whole game, but get a little rhythm going for maybe a quarter against the Super Bowl champs and just to have that test I think would be fun.”

Dorian Thompson-Robinson costing the Browns $$
Deshaun Watson costing the Browns $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Watson better play up to his contract this season (which I doubt he ever will) or he and the Browns will at very least be drenched in embarrassment.

Watson should be hearing Thompson-Robinson's hoof beats..............

Browns QB Joshua Dobbs Posts Message as Rookie Named Starter

The Cleveland Browns named rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson the starter for the August 17 preseason tilt against the Philadelphia Eagles, prompting an interesting message from Joshua Dobbs.

“Set your tempo. Stay in your lane. Run your race,” Dobbs wrote on Instagram, including a photo of himself kneeling with Thompson-Robinson and Deshaun Watson on the practice field.

Dobbs, 28, is in line to be the primary backup to Watson this year after returning to Cleveland as a free agent this offseason. However, Thompson-Robinson has made a splash in the Browns’ first two preseason games and will be in the spotlight for the nationally televised matchup (NFL Network) against the Eagles.

Thompson-Robinson will start, with Kellen Mond backing him up. Dobbs and Watson will not play, per head coach Kevin Stefanski. It’s an interesting move by the Browns for a game that is typically used as a dress rehearsal for teams.

Dobbs would likely want some extra time on the field to prove himself after a lackluster showing on August 11, when he completed 8 of 16 passes for 77 yards and an interception in a half of work in the Browns’ 17-15 loss to the Washington Commanders.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson Impressing Browns Star Deshaun Watson

The Browns may be set on Dobbs being No. 2 on the depth chart, perhaps explaining why he’s not suiting up. Or perhaps they want to see what Thompson-Robinson can do against the top players the Eagles will run out, rather than taking the field in the second half.

Thompson-Robinson comes to the table with some significant experience, starting 48 games with UCLA. In his final year with the Bruins, he completed 69.6% of his passes for 3,169 yards and 27 touchdowns, adding 12 touchdowns on the ground. His dual-threat ability is a perfect fit as Watson’s backup and the rookie has been absorbing all he can early on, impressing his mentor.

“He’s been great. He’s been a sponge. He’s been learning. Whenever his time comes, he take advantage of those opportunities and he won’t shy away from any moment,” Watson said after the loss to the Commanders. “So he’s a great guy that’s been a great addition for the QB room, in the locker room, and then when he gets on the field, he brings that energy, and you can see it when he step on the field, everyone is watching him, and you can feel the energy going throughout the whole team.”
Dorian Thompson-Robinson Breakout Star of Preseason for Browns

Dobbs is on just a one-year deal with the Browns and Thompson-Robinson was drafted as a long-term backup option. However, that timeline may be shifting a bit thanks to his stellar play in the preseason so far.

Thompson-Robinson started the second half for the Browns against the Commanders, rallying the team for its first touchdown drive. He completed 9-of-10 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown, adding 11 yards rushing. Thompson-Robinson finished with a ridiculous quarterback rating of 142.5.

Thompson-Robinson was also the breakout star of the Browns’ first preseason game (8-for-11, 82 pass yards, TD, 37 rush yards), a 21-16 win against the New York Jets on August 3.

ESPN Reveals Their Ranking For The Browns To Open The Season
By Pat Opperman August 21, 2023 @opperman_pat

ESPN updated their NFL power rankings for the first time since just after the NFL Draft.
Since then, their analysts have watched Deshaun Watson’s return to form.

And along with Cleveland Browns fans, their pundits must be impressed by the new defense and receivers.

But despite the Browns’ roster changes and preseason efforts, ESPN still thinks Cleveland is not a playoff threat.

Training camp has not been kind to Watson.

The Browns announced Sunday that Watson will play 20 to 25 snaps with the offensive starters in their final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Aug. 26th.

Browns continue to create massive 2023 cap space with another contract restructure
Myles Garrett joins Deshaun Watson and Joel Bitonio in having deal restructured this offseason

They have to have a lot of carryover to pay the pervert

I don’t know how true this is but it explains how the Browns are able to spend so much:

Browns’ Deshaun Watson knows he has to prove he still belongs among NFL’s elite quarterbacks
Updated 4:52 PM CDT, August 23, 2023

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Deshaun Watson still has so much to prove — on and off the field.
While he tries to repair an image marred by sexual misconduct allegations, Watson is attempting to move back among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks, a status he once held but has since relinquished.

Watson must convince critics, and to a lesser degree himself, that he’s still one of the game’s best players behind center. While playing for Houston, he had a place in the league’s upper echelon of QBs, mentioned in the same breath with Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen.

With Cleveland, Watson’s stock has plummeted.

He accepts that.

“I missed two years of football, so I shouldn’t be in those rankings, to be honest,” Watson said Wednesday before the Browns’ practice was moved indoors because of thunderstorms. “If you’re asking me, I haven’t played ball. I haven’t played enough football the last few years to even be up there.

“So I got to go out there and prove and show what I got to do to get back in those conversations.”

As he prepares for his first full season with Browns, Watson is being scrutinized as much for his football skills as his behavior beyond the sideline.

He played in just six games last season following an 11-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and harassment during massage therapy sessions when he played for the Texans.

When he returned, Watson didn’t play up to his standards, raising questions about his game and whether the Browns made a colossal mistake by trading three first-round draft picks and signing him to a $230 million contact.

Watson was understandably rusty after sitting out the entire 2021 season following a trade demand and then being punished for alleged inappropriate behavior.

The league’s passing leader in 2020, Watson made throws that weren’t as crisp or accurate. He was hesitant in the pocket, and while he did have a few spectacular moments, there weren’t nearly as many as expected.

He’s aiming to change that this season. Watson has spoken this summer about this being a new start for him, a fresh slate.

He knows there will always be detractors, but he’s not trying to live up to anyone’s expectations other than his own. In the AFC North, he’ll always be compared to Burrow in Cincinnati and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, but Watson said he’s not motivated by trying to match them throw for throw.

“I’m self-driven,” he said. “I want to be the best I can be for Deshaun Watson. I can’t get caught up in the other guys and seeing what they’re doing and all of them are elite. If you’re a starting quarterback in this league, you’re pretty elite.

“This is a hard business. This is a hard job to have and it’s only 32 spots. I feel like everyone’s elite and I got to be self-driven to be the best Deshaun Watson I can be for this team and for myself.”

Watson will get his most extensive playing time of the exhibition season on Saturday when the Browns travel to Kansas City to take on the Super Bowl champion Chiefs.

Coach Kevin Stefanski will play the majority of his starters, and Watson is excited to get in some quality work ahead of the Sept. 10 opener against Cincinnati.

It’s a chance for the Browns to see how they measure up against the league’s best team. And for Watson, it’s a chance to match up while renewing his friendship with Mahomes, whom he has known for years.

Watson quickly mentioned Mahomes’ playmaking ability, leadership and work ethic when asked about what impresses him most about the two-time Super Bowl winner. And as far as Watson is concerned, there isn’t much Mahomes doesn’t do well.

“He just makes everyone else around him better,” he said. “So he’s definitely the standard for the NFL.”

Watson then pointed out they were both drafted in 2017: he at No. 10 and Mahomes at 12.
Right now, they’re not in the same class.

I don’t know how true this is but it explains how the Browns are able to spend so much:
The Browns are pushing the cap hits forward because they believe the salary cap will continue to rise, substantially. And it will.

They have to have a lot of carryover to pay the pervert
The Browns are projected to be $45 million over the cap next year. They will need every bit of this year's savings for that. I don't expect them to make any high price acquisitions this year with that money.

Jakeem Grant was carted off the field in an Aircast, having sustained what the Browns are reporting as a "serious knee injury" upon the opening kick return. He was just getting back from losing last season to an Achilles rupture. He was to be the 2023 Browns returner.

Browns returner in quite a bit of pain after having suffered what was reported as a serious knee injury. Appears that he sustained a fracture of his patella and/or a patella tendon rupture. MRI scheduled for tomorrow, although plain xrays should make a fracture dx. Either way a devastating injury.

I suspected, plain x-rays would have picked up a fracture of the patella, and it didn't. So an today confirmed no fracture, but also confirmed the patella tendon rupture which I felt was the culprit. Tough break for the young man.
