Preseason - TEXANS @ New England

Deculous is not good. Tytus can’t get well soon enough.

I expected a little more pt for CJ but I get the thinking. Especially given that 76 was getting trucked every play. Y’all want CJ hurt? I don’t. Smart move by DeMeco imho. Mac Jones didn’t see the light of day. You don’t risk starters to unnecessary risk.

I like this kid Cunningham for NE. He’s got some juice. Of course, teams would game plan for him if he played, but he is an interesting prospect.

Well that makes some sense but maybe they should have started Mills and then brought in Stroud after a couple of possessions. Stroud didn't really get a chance to settle down and get comfortable. I presume Ryans will be asked about it.
Exactly right.

It's the job of the coaches to develop Stroud and I believe they mishandled his playing time tonight and missed an opportunity to give him some experience and development. I hope this won't be a trend.
I don’t think the coaches mishandled anything. CJ started tonight, Mills will more than likely start the next game and CJ will get a little more playing time, calm down.

Stroud. Rookie jitters, I'm not concerned. (yet)

Case. Well of course he looked good. A QB with his experience playing against a bunch of scrubs trying to make a roster should do what he did. But, there'll be no QB controversy on the Texans.

Offense in general looked OK for where we're at right now. Again, no reason to start panicking yet.

Defense looked in good shape, but honestly, I would have expected that from a DeMeco defense.

Extra points to Tank Dell. :)

Overall, I'm actually good with what I saw.

There were some frustrating mistakes that NFL players should NOT make but overall it was a positive night for the Texans!

Which was to be expected, especially with all of the pressure. I think CJ would have settled down and settled into the flow of the game but got yanked. Let's see what happens next week. At least that one is at home.

I expect Stroud to display rookieness for a while longer. Rookie QBs always have problems adjusting. It's way to early to make any judgements on Stroud yet.

I know I'm a bit new to NFL fandom but it seems to me that the preseason is a good time to let the rookie QB gain some game experience. But, maybe they plan on going with Mills and Keenum this year in order to slowly bring Stroud along, which might be a good idea. I don't know. I have a hard time envisioning them keeping Stroud on the bench in the preseason and then throwing him out there once the regular season starts. I guess we shall see.

Even in preseason you have to be careful with how you manage your rookie QB. The snaps have to be meaningful, and you can't allow him to get rattled or drift into bad habits.

It boils down to one fact: QB in the NFL is the most difficult job in all of sports. It's rare for any 21 year old to thrive at it, no matter how good he was in college. If you throw him out there before he's ready, it can potentially ruin him. The fans of this franchise know what that looks like because it happened to the first QB the Texans ever had.

Rookie QB's sitting for the entire season is common, even among the best rookies. Aaron Rodgers and Pat Mahomes both sat during their rookie seasons, Rodgers actually for two years, and they've won Super Bowls and will be Hall of Famers.

The exceptions are QB's who can scramble and buy time using their legs. Examples are Deshaun Watson or Russel Wilson. That's why Anthony Richardson will probably have a great rookie season with the Colts.

But for pocket passers like Stroud and many of the great QB's, sitting and learning is not an indicator that the coach doesn't have confidence him, it just means he's protecting him and wants him to develop correctly. If he gets rattled too soon in his career, he will not have a foundation of confidence to build on. And for an NFL QB, confidence is everything.

Nice post. Thanks.

Rookie QB with some jitters, Tank Dell displaying the hype from camp, and a relatively clean game regarding penalties. Not much else for me. The defense looked good in preseason last year too with similar energy so it's still wait and see. Vet QBs looked calmer as they should especially Case, who was definitely the big fish in a lil pond...but as someone mentioned he brings good evaluation of other skill players.

Not fair considering Purdy went down early and they couldnt move the ball and the defense was on the field the entire game. Hurts wasnt fairing that great in the beginning of the game when the D was fresh
True but Philly/Hurts wasn't playing against the 7th string D as stated in previous post and from what I remember hearing from last year is Demco's D had trouble with running QBs so yeah AR scares me but hey that's just my observation.

They haven't officially named Stroud as the starter...

Just from the limited amount that we've seen here, to me, it looks like Stroud is the third best QB on the roster.
If I had to play a real NFL game tomorrow I would probably start Mills on a short leash with Keenum as the back up.

Not really fair to Stroud. But if he doesn't look much better next week he should not be the starter heading into the season.

This is where I'm at. Let's see what he proves next week.

As far as this game, we can blame the O-line, but Stroud didn't see that safety coming across the middle. That's not because he's bad, it's because he's not ready.

If our rookie QB was behind an old starter like Aaron Rodgers had Favre or Mahomes had Alex Smith, Stroud wouldn't be in the conversation for starting QB. The only reason we're talking about it is because of our QB situation from last year. As of right now, it's looking like Keenum should be the old vet starter that Stroud sits and learns from. That's if we're serious about winning.

That would actually be a pretty good trick seeing as how we only play 3 preseason games.

Anyway my biggest takeaway was that the Texans tackled better than they have in years. Hopefully it will carry over into the season.

I think he's saying that the Texans went 3-0 last year in preseason games and are 1-0 so far this year for 4 in a row.

Yep, and Stroud surely will improve, will he improve enough to be a solid QB his rookie yr? TBD, he looked very much like a rookie that has a lot of work to do to adjust to the speed of the NFL game and needs to learn to read coverages better. In short he looked like a rookie QB playing in his first game.

If Stroud fails because of tonight then he wasn't the man for the job to begin with.

Texans rookie QB C.J. Stroud besieged by Patriots pass rush in preseason debut

Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud got a Bill Belichick welcome to the NFL in his first preseason action.

Stroud played two series Thursday night in the Texans' 20-9 win over the New England Patriots, completing 2 of 4 passes for 13 yards with an interception and a sack. He added two scrambles for 6 yards.

The rookie signal-caller was under siege behind an offensive line comprised chiefly of backups. The Pats officially pressured Stroud, the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, on three dropbacks, repeatedly pushing the QB off his spot. New England blitzed Stroud on 60% of his dropbacks, per Next Gen Stats.

Third-year pro Davis Mills entered in the third drive and did a better job getting the ball out quickly to avoid pressure -- something Stroud needs to work on. The Texans' offense played smoother under Mills, unsurprising against backups, given he has 26 starts under his belt. Mills went 9-of-12 passing for 99 yards and a touchdown with no sacks in four drives.

Two preseason games remain, but the question for Texans first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans will be whether he allows Stroud to learn on the job, betting on upside, or start the season with the more experienced but less dynamic Mills under center for Week 1.

With defenders in his face, Stroud looked every bit a rookie in the development process.

On his interception, Stroud patted the ball and stared down receiver Tank Dell, bringing safety Jalen Mills right to the play for the pick. It's a learning moment for the rookie. He can't gawk at a wideout against NFL safeties. Once he patted the ball, the play was dead.

Facing a Patriots defense -- which has one of the deepest rushing groups in the league -- with a slew of backup offensive linemen is a tough task for any first-year quarterback. It felt like Stroud got pressured more in two series in his first preseason action than in entire games at Ohio State. The rookie showed he has a way to go with his processing, which should improve with more reps.

Stroud got his feet wet Thursday in a brief outing. It wasn't pretty. The question moving forward is how he bounces back.

CJ did not stare down the receiver.
He looked left first and then came back to the right.

That Oline play in the first quarter was horrendous. We were missing a lot of starters though.

I can’t wait until all of the starters play.

Defense looks like they will be the real deal. Even though the Patriots wasn’t playing their starters either.

Hey good win

Good thing I had the Direct TV app on my phone. I was able to connect it to the TV and watch the game.
