Preseason - TEXANS @ New England

I know I'm a bit new to NFL fandom but it seems to me that the preseason is a good time to let the rookie QB gain some game experience. But, maybe they plan on going with Mills and Keenum this year in order to slowly bring Stroud along, which might be a good idea. I don't know. I have a hard time envisioning them keeping Stroud on the bench in the preseason and then throwing him out there once the regular season starts. I guess we shall see.

Preseason games suck. Starters hardly play. Plays are vanilla, there’s no real game plan. As for Stroud, because starters don’t play, particularly the guys up front protecting, you don’t want to take unnecessary risks like that.

The joint scrimmages are where the starters are going to get their reps in. Unfortunately they don’t televise those.

Well that makes some sense but maybe they should have started Mills and then brought in Stroud after a couple of possessions. Stroud didn't really get a chance to settle down and get comfortable. I presume Ryans will be asked about it.

reps also change w/ the shortening of the preseason from 4 games to 3...but I agree...I would have liked to see more of him...but probably a good thing we didnt since we trotted out an atrocious oline to protect him...76 couldnt block his shadow if his life depended on it
That's Deculus. How did Green look?

I can’t speak for others but I will say it is extremely disappointing having Cj play without some of his impactful starters. It’s a such thing as a confidence crisis for young qbs in this league but I believe Cj is a tough and intelligent winning qb so I’m not too worried. Training a rookie qb is like teaching a child how to ride a bike. We’re bringing him on slowly and it’s good he got a couple snaps so he can watch the tape and try to correct some of the mistakes. It would have been better if Mills started and Cj could play these late reps against free agents. I think Cj will have a solid rookie campaign, I don’t see Mills or Case replacing him unless he gets injured. He has certain intangibles that can’t be replaced

I don’t know. He got his feet wet. Let him process that little bit that he saw and work to improve.

Exactly right.

It's the job of the coaches to develop Stroud and I believe they mishandled his playing time tonight and missed an opportunity to give him some experience and development. I hope this won't be a trend.
Dont think it will be a trend...next game the starting Oline is going to need to get in reps before the season so should get a better idea and showing next game.

With Keenum playing a half versus scrubs and this defense, we are going to be undefeated in pre-season! Like it matters, but..

I envisioned Stroud and Mills taking turns as they both need reps and are competing but Keenum, a veteran, taking all of the snaps? Maybe the coaches are convinced that Stroud is ready and want to protect him. I had hoped to see more of CJ tonight. I hope it doesn't stunt his development.

They haven't officially named Stroud as the starter...

Just from the limited amount that we've seen here, to me, it looks like Stroud is the third best QB on the roster.
If I had to play a real NFL game tomorrow I would probably start Mills on a short leash with Keenum as the back up.

Not really fair to Stroud. But if he doesn't look much better next week he should not be the starter heading into the season.

They put Mills in bubble wrap last season and brought in no serious competition. Basically anointed him the starter and he regressed from his promising play at the end of his rookie season. Young QBs need reps in the preseason.

Yea, they threw Stroud into the fire with a backup OL for his first EVER NFL start and on the road no less and then yanked him after two possessions. I think the coaches completely botched his development tonight, unless he was injured.

Yeah...And like I said, it's not really fair to CJ.

As fans we can only analyze what we see though....
If he starts next game, he's gotta have a much better showing...He should get many more reps and we can get a better feel for him.

I don’t know. Let’s wait until he gets his fifth pass attempt Next week.

Yea, no kidding. I thought it was good that Mills went in and he played fairly well. But then they should have brought Stroud back in as his jitters had probably subsided and it would have been an opportunity for him to gain some game-time experience. Oh well. In DeMeco we trust and on to next week!

It's hard for a rookie QB in his first ever start to be successful when defensive tackles are running straight up the middle, barely touched, and sack them for a 15 yard loss, making it 2nd and 25.

The New England defense was fresh and went all out to get Stroud and Houston's offensive line and coaches let him down.
This is 100% on the coaches.

Nah, Mason should hold it down and Scruggs didnt look bad at center...it was 76 that looked horrible in Strouds 2 drives...he was getting eaten alive every snap...If Nico doesnt ball out and probe to be WR1 then our biggest need will be WR or LG if Green doesnt play up to expectations and draft status

Brilliant management by Slowik.
