Texans Training Camp Preview 2023

No excuse.

Under Fisher, other young QBs had started sooner than Goff.
See McNair and Young.
Chandler started a good portion of McNair's rookie season before getting knocked out by a concussion, or I doubt McNair would've gotten to play. Fun fact: Chandler got traded to the Falcos, stayed healthy and lead the Falcons to a SB.

Young starting was mandated by Bud, it's a well known fact that Fisher hated Young as a person/player.

The guy with the 22% winning percentage? No. Stroud needs to start. The Texans need Stroud to start. The more tough games on the road for CJ the sooner the Texans start winning them.

Some guys learn by doing, some by reading, and some guys learn by seeing. No reason to force a round peg into a square hole, but the staff knows his learning style. If it’s seeing, he would benefit greatly by seeing someone else run the offense, even just one week.

I’m not opposed to CJ starting at Baltimore but if Mills starts, I’m fine with it. It is in fact, somewhat risky to start a rookie on the road at Baltimore. Mills is more likely to win game 1. I stand by that statement. Actually Case is the most likely to win but I digress. If CJ performs poorly it could zap his confidence and fans and media will question him and the decision to start him. The safer play is letting him watch a game or maybe a few games and then toss him into the fire. But I am team DeMeco. If coach says he’s the guy, I can get behind that.

No, you're not wrong. He was playing with the ones. Whether he would have kept this position is debatable, but the negativity is based on his play last year, not on how well he was doing in the new offense.
TBF, he hasn't played much in new offense since preseason just started...

Some linemen just perform better in the ZBS, not to mention different coaching. Slowik obviously liked what he saw in Quessenberry.
Wut? Slowik liked what he saw? First week in August, was he going to cut his only veteran C with experience with other Texans players? Q was horrible 2022. You don't trade up for Scruggs who on many boards wasn't top two college centers if Slowick thought Q was the guy for 2023.

I wouldn’t have kept Q on roster if Juice and Patterson were only 2 centers on team.

New chant:

Let's get JUICY!

If his confidence is zapped by getting mauled, then he's not the guy anyway. Anyone remember Watson game vs Sacksonville? Didn't ruin him. Those David Carr stories are overblown. He was last in, 1st to leave and thats why he sucked.

Good riddance? While I agree Q wasn’t the answer at C, hell, he was only a starter because the starter quit, but good riddance to a guy who ripped his knee to shreds? Savage room.

And what is worse, Juice at C with a still struggling Green at LG or Juice at LG with Q at C? IMO Green was the biggest factor determining how they lined up Sep. 10.

And I haven’t heard a thing about Patterson. Not that I think a 6th round rookie is the answer, but probably still a better option than Deiter. No?
Oh come on! Nothing was said about being glad Q was injured, just good riddance that a bad player was gone. Scruggs not drafted to play OG. He is thw center of future or a bust. I don't think it's much of a gamble. Now if healthy and we cannot depend on Kenyon, yeah give Patterson a rumble at guard. I doubt he could be much worse than Green.

Not disagreeing, I just don't know, but I thought Deiter was, at least, a solid veteran upgrade.
Dieter as 2019 rookie started 15 of 16. IR'd 2021 and no snaps in 2022 so 'solid veteran upgrade' eye of beholder, I suppose.

I expect Deiter to make the team. Maybe even as a starter. He is a talented player who has started in the league before, but injuries and losing his job to a pro bowl level player left him in the backup tier of free agent contracts. If Green does not step up or Scruggs isn’t ready then i’d love it for Deiter to become this year’s Ethan Pocic OL who outplays his contract.
I think Dieter like Nico will earn his minimal $1 million contract.

If that's the case, Stroud is never going to be the guy. Frankly, none of that makes a lot of sense to me.

So no highly touted rookie QB can benefit by sitting and watching another guy while he watches and learns? I thought I was pretty clear that my opinion is that there is a benefit. The counterpoint is doing something is another form of learning. The ol’ take your lumps and get better form it idea. Both have merit is all I’m saying.

For one game?

For one game?

When it's on the road against a good D, and in a place notorious for crowd noise...yes. I want the young man to experience more ideal conditions the following week in Houston. If Mills plays well...I might extend that sit and study period for a while while Mills does his best placeholder imitation. I doubt Mills shows much in my scenario, which makes the switch that much easier for game #2. That's not unlike what happened with Savage and Watson. They started Savage and pulled the hook quickly. I stated I doubted that it would happen, and I'm on team Demeco so I am behind whatever he decides - it's more rhetorical in nature. I suspect CJ will be named the starter for game #1.

(Some of) Demeco on NFLN:

(QBs) Fun process with both our guys. I’ve seen both guys improve. … It’s been fun to watch. Both guys have made big plays. Offense is coming together.

Is this competition over?

We’re still working through it. … CJ will go first vs. Patriots. Everyone will get reps.

(WRs) Robert has been very consistent in his approach. Couple young guys in Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Tank Dell has been open a lot.

(Will Anderson Jr. through the course of camp?) Consistency each and every day. In the backfield. His approach is fun. Tenacious player, will be violent. Excited where Will is.

(Dalton Schultz’s role?) He’s the QB’s best friend. They know Dalton will get them a completion. Love the way he works. Great addition for us.

I’m an energetic coach. I’m having fun. I wish I could suit up again.

nfl network just said Tytus broke his hand

Paging @CND! Anyone have a general timeline? I suppose it depends on the specific break and how severe it is. Hopefully as breaks go, I hope it's a minor one. We need big Tytus in there!

hopefully getting him ready to play most of preseason game 1

Most? I doubt that, but I could see up to the first half. The second half would be mostly Davis and maybe last couple of series for Case.

I'm just excited we get to see some semi-real football. It feels like this drought and heat down here. The offseason seems to never end. Then when it finally gets here, it feels like it's over in two weeks.

What if he looks good in the preseason Games. Would you still sit him for the first game?

  • C.J. Stroud was a little erratic in practice on Monday. It wasn’t the crisp performance we’ve come to expect from him each day. Stroud corrected some of those early mistakes by the end of the drill. Later in 7-on-7 drills, Stroud was a little out in front of Dalton Schultz and John Metchie. Stroud has had better overall days.
  • The defense was flying around again after the offense had taken some ground back in recent practices. The highlight of the day for the defense had to be a coverage sack. There was just nowhere for C.J. Stroud to go with the ball. Everyone was covered. Stroud’s scramble was covered. Overall, the defense won the day.
  • Christian Harris was called a sideline-to-sideline linebacker by veteran linebacker Denzel Perryman. He constantly showcases it. Monday he had a pass breakup flying in at the last second to bat the ball away. He and safety Jalen Pitre flew in on a tackle for a loss. It will be interesting to see who starts with Harris at linebacker. The best linebacking units usually include Harris and rookie Henry To’oTo’o.
  • Devin Singletary has wiggle. I think I wrote it three times during Monday’s practice. It feels like he just finds seams and holes to run through. Sure, it was no pads, but there weren’t a lot of defenders getting hands on Singletary behind the line of scrimmage. He had a lot of reps after Dameon Pierce was a little shaken up.
  • Tank Dell had another nice couple of catches. The rookie’s quickness and ability to find space early in a play was key at times. One particular play he darted towards the sideline and Stroud quickly whipped his head around to find Dell. I don’t know if Dell will start, but he will be a utilized weapon for sure.
  • There was a funny moment with a referee at practice Monday. Nico Collins was flying down the sideline with Derek Stingley on him. C.J. Stroud had the pass come down a little behind Collins as the wideout tried to turn Derek Stingley was there. The official flew the flag but after some pleading from Stingley and general manager Nick Caserio, the ref waived off the penalty.
  • Will Anderson’s speed was on display on Monday. He has the suddenness to affect a number of plays, and his speed allows him to recover and make other plays if his initial play isn’t there. After getting stuffed initially by a blocker, Anderson looped around and found a hole in the middle of the offensive line to get right in C.J. Stroud’s face. Anderson’s rush forced a high throw.
  • C.J. Stroud might have had an up-and-down practice but he finished on a high note. Toward the end of the workout Stroud scanned the field and looked to have Dalton Schultz open. If he makes that throw Jalen Pitre is still running with an interception. Stroud saw the safety and moved to another throw which he completed to Nico Collins. Stroud later had pressure coming from defensive end Chase Winovich. Stroud eluded the rusher and as Winovich gave chase Stroud let one go over the middle to Nico Collins. I say touchdown, though I am sure the defenders near Collins would claim he would have been tackled short. Either way, growth and good plays towards the end of practice for Stroud.

If Slowik was as down on Quessenberry as most people here, he wouldn't have been working solely with the 1's. The ZBS relies a little more on teamwork than individual ability, which covers up some individual flaws.

They drafted Juice to be the center of the future, but he's not ready. The center in a ZBS has a lot of responsibility. A veteran is best for that role.

I disagree. Slowik new to team and needs to know if Q is as bad as he was so playing him with 1s is logical. Before injury, I expected Q to get no more than 2 preseason games if that at starter. You don't risk you #2 pick on a horrible center.

You think Scruggs is not ready but Quessenberry was? Based on what? Rarely does a rookie draft pick center start in practice over a vet. I will not be surprised if Q gets an injury settlement.

Following practice, DeMeco Ryans told NFL Network’s Tom Pelisserro that CJ Stroud will be the starting quarterback for Thursday night’s preseason opener against the New England Patriots.

Although now that it has been made official, it’s been obvious throughout the last three practices that Stroud was going to be the guy.

He was running with ones again as anticipated to start Monday’s practice. Teams don’t give first-team reps to a guy and then not play him, especially during a game week.

The Texans really seemed to emphasize the run game during and early portion of 11-on-11.

Running back Devin Singletary got the first handoff today. While right tackle George Fant got the first reps with the ones with Tytus Howard sidelined to do a broken thumb/hand.

Dare Ogunbowale got first carry with second team unit with Davis Mills under center and Mike Boone got the first carry with Case Keenum running the third team.

CJ Stroud’s first pass in the team period was to Tank Dell, who ran an intermediate out-route. It was a really good catch he made while falling out of bounds gaining about 20 yards.

I watched the quarterbacks closely during individual drills today.

CJ’s ball comes out different, compared to Mills or Keenum. It has a little wobble to it more times than not and doesn’t have that tilt on intermediate to deep throws.

Mechanically he’s operating differently than Mills or the seasoned veteran Keenum. While he gets the ball out quickly, his mechanics are different, and it doesn’t appear that he’s really adept at shifting his weight yet. It could be something to keep an eye on. However, he’s making the right reads and decisions, is getting the ball to his receivers on time, and that’s what counts.

During the second round of 11-on-11, Stroud was nearly picked by linebacker Christian Harris who couldn’t hold on to ball after jumping out route. Harris has really been fun to watch this camp, he’s all over the place.

Wide receiver Jalen camp made some nice catches in the red zone from Davis Mills. Camp has been very consistent this training camp.

Second year offensive tackle Austin Deculus got some reps with the first team offense at right tackle today. He spelled and rotated with Tyler Beach for Fant in the latter stages of practice during a scrimmage period.

He looked good. Deculus made a great initial block at the line on a play action, but struggled to hold his block on the second level. It’s a timing and angle of attack thing that he’ll need to work on.

Cornerback Derek Stingley continued to flash. He made a nice play, batting a ball down on an out-route, intended for Robert Woods.

Woods lined up on the left side the very next play and got great separation from Steven Nelson to make a nice catch on an intermediate out-route.

Nico Collins made a couple of nice catches on some underneath crossing routes toward the end of practice.

Davis Mills didn’t take a single rep during the last 15-20 minutes of team period.
