Texans Training Camp Preview 2023

Stroud and Mills, Stroud and Mills, it's all you hear. What happened to Case? Did they bring in Case to sit on the bench and be the designated "3rd QB" option? Which isn't bad having someone like Case being your 3rd QB, I'm not complaining, except for the lack of news.
Hutchinson said Case is his favorite guy to hang out with. I think Case is doing exactly what Demeco wants him to do, be a mentor. They already know what he can bring as a QB. I think the Texans are mainly trying to figure out what to do with Mills.

  • C.J. Stroud took all of the reps with the first team. The rookie quarterback was whipping the ball around to start practice. It was as in control as he’s looked all camp long. Stroud hit on all levels of the field, made quick decisions, and handled pressure pretty well.
  • The quarterback competition might be entering its final days. Stroud has had back-to-back days where he’s been the best quarterback. He’s not without fault, but he’s been better than Davis Mills. When asked directly if there should be a takeaway from the reps for Stroud DeMeco Ryans avoided a direct answer simply opting for “Stroud’s improving just like we asked all of our guys” and a generic answer about the happiness he’s had with guys stepping up. Later though, Ryans made it clear they are very deliberate in how they organize and divide reps. This isn’t the knockout blow in the quarterback competition but Davis Mills is hanging on like Rocky Balboa after round one with Clubber Lang.
  • It wasn’t all amazing from Stroud. There were some moments I am sure he would like to have back from Friday. Denzel Perryman picked off Stroud in a team session. Stroud was dealing with a messy pocket and it didn’t look like ever saw Perryman. The defense was stout a couple of times forcing the offense into third down situations. Stroud probably took a safety on a rushing attempt where he should have thrown the ball away. He missed a deep ball to Nico Collins at one point.
  • The above-mentioned deep ball mistake was remedied quickly. C.J. Stroud almost had Nico Collins down the left sideline, but the pass was just a few inches ahead of Collins. The next time up, Stroud nailed the throw for his best play of camp. Rookie linebacker Henry To’o'To’o was bearing down on Stroud but he delivered a beauty to Collins for the score. It showcased Stroud’s ability to bounce back within a practice. It also highlighted something DeMeco Ryans said about his players in that sometimes when they make a mistake they know immediately how to fix it.
  • Robert Woods was part of some surgical plays from C.J. Stroud. The offense felt like they were constantly moving the chains against the defense. It was a good job by the quarterbacks to get the balls out and a solid job by the offensive line who was down Laremy Tunsil (rest) and playing with rookie Juice Scruggs at center.

  • There were some operation issues with the offense in one particular team session. The goal was to get out of their own endzone and the offense had multiple penalties in a row. It was unclear if it was Juice Scruggs not snapping the ball, guards moving early, or something from C.J. Stroud. The defense was letting them have it from the field and the sideline on each of the penalties.
  • I know it sounds like a great day for the offense, but the defense had some wins. Will Anderson sacked C.J. Stroud and was chasing Stroud on a bootleg. He had a rare loss against Tytus Howard in one rep. Jacob Martin has so much more left in the tank than I expected from him. He’s like a heat-seeking missile when attacking the quarterbacks. M.J. Stewart picked off Davis Mills.
  • There was some excellent 1-on-1 work between the defensive backs and the wideouts. Desmond King and John Metchie was my favorite matchup. Metchie’s smooth route opened up enough space for him to make a play. The rematch went King’s way as he tied Metchie up. Derek Stingley locked up Tank Dell. Tavierre Thomas stuffed a wideout at the line of scrimmage and within the rules just kept the wideout there for a funny but awesome rep from him.
    • A few names who we haven’t talked about as much to wrap up the notes. Xavier Hutchinson had a nice grab for a first down from Davis Mills. Jared Wayne had a diving catch for a first down from C.J. Stroud. George Fant did a nice job filling in for Laremy Tunsil at left tackle. Tight end Eric Tomlinson had a nice catch and run up the seam. When he gets going the big fella rumbles. Kurt Hinish was tough to block on Friday.

Stoots states that today Stroud was better than Mills, but fails to back up this statement. Apparently it is based solely on the fact that Stroud had the first team reps. But Stroud went 7 for 11 with an INT to go with his TD. He did say Mills had an INT but fails to report he also went 8 for 10 passing. Up at post 575 it's reported Mills was making "tight window throws". Sounds to me like a case could me made that the two broke even today.
(edit) Stroud went 7 for 11, not 7 for 10. The Chronicle report downthread at 618 has a fair assessment, reporting on the day both qbs had.

Oh, well I'm not yet familiar with all of the players but if he was the starter then it seems like a major loss to me, but perhaps I am mistaken and I hope that I am.
No, you're not wrong. He was playing with the ones. Whether he would have kept this position is debatable, but the negativity is based on his play last year, not on how well he was doing in the new offense.

So the third year QB is as good as the rookie QB that has never played a down of NFL football. Sounds like potential. :ok:

Alright, this is getting interesting. CJ Stroud is starting to pull away looking better and better. It was a little concerning to see CJ Stroud getting attention at the conclusion of today’s practice though. Looked to be heat exhaustion or something because he was getting water poured all on him and towels fanning him. Hope he’s alright!

That's a pretty poor way to judge, IMO (unless you have an agenda).

Not every completion is equal. And even if they were, a TD is worth a lot more than just 1 completion.

The guys who are there seem to have Stroud up a bit. That shouldn't bother anyone. In fact, as Texans fans, we should be excited that it looks like we are going to be getting superior QB play this year.

This is why.

After throwing three interceptions in two days earlier this week, rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud put together arguably his best performance of training camp Friday.

Stroud went 7-of-11 with a touchdown and an interception in team drills. The touchdown came on the first series of drills. Stroud hit wide receiver Nico Collins with a 40-yard pass for his second touchdown of camp. Collins ran a go route and got behind cornerback Shaquill Griffin. Stroud delivered the pass on time, hitting Collins in stride.

It was an impressive throwing performance for the No. 2 overall pick in April’s draft.

However, Stroud made one mistake at the end of practice when he threw an interception in coverage. There appeared to be a miscommunication on the play, as there was no receiver in sight. Linebacker Denzel Perryman was backpedaling in zone coverage when the ball came his way. He didn’t have to do much to pick it off.

Stroud immediately threw his hand up as if to signal that the mistake was his fault.

Other than that, it was a pretty flawless performance for Stroud, who took all the first-team reps in practice. Stroud and Davis Mills have split first-team reps most of camp.

“Stroud is doing a great job,” coach DeMeco Ryans said. “He’s improving. It’s something we ask all of our guys when it comes to his development and what do you expect from training camp.”

Mills was solid, too. He was 8-of-10 and had an interception but also had some nice throws.

Ryans did not say whether Stroud will continue to take first-team reps, or whether he would continue to switch with Mills. Regardless, a starter has not been named yet. The Texans have a Saturday night practice open to fans.

Some more observations from Friday's practice:

Stroud taking off
The one criticism of Stroud in the pre-draft process was his athleticism and whether he could take off or make off-script throws when the pocket collapsed. So far, he’s shown a tendency to run when his receivers aren’t open.

Stroud scrambled for a first down early in practice and ran toward the sideline, avoiding safety Jalen Pitre, who was closing in on him. Pitre and Stroud, who are friends, exchanged some trash talk with each other as they nearly made contact. Neither Pitre nor Stroud backed down.

Good and bad with Kenyon Green
The good is that Green, who is entering his second year in the league, looks healthy. The left guard has taken the majority of the first-team reps, which is a positive sign after he missed all of the offseason workouts and mandatory minicamp while he rehabbed from an arthroscopic knee procedure.

The bad is that he committed two costly back-to-back false start penalties. The penalties occurred when the Texans’ first-team offense had the ball inside their own 5-yard line. The penalties pushed them back further into an impossible situation to get out.

Three takeaways from defense
The defense has outplayed the offense early in camp, and that’s what usually happens especially when the pads come on.

The defense was responsible for three turnovers, including a strip-sack from rookie defensive end Will Anderson Jr. — who wasn’t supposed to touch the quarterback — an interception from safety M.J. Stewart and the aforementioned interception from Perryman.

Creating turnovers has been a point of emphasis for Ryans and his defense since he arrived in Houston. His 49ers were tied for second in the NFL with 30 takeaways in 2022. It’s a primary reason they had the league’s No. 1 ranked defense.

The Texans weren’t far behind. They had 27.

There is a reason Dallas did not pay him. Nick is throwing around Hannah’s money like it’s his (I know same old diatribe) but it’s true. Fine, not mine! Clearly depth OL biggest hole, but that’s league wide.

Functional & expected is 6-8 wins in DeMecos first gig as HC. Don't see Cleveland tanking(w/stefanskie) do first pick next year around 20. So Texans lose a little in draft capital to go up for Anderson (value wise) but still worth it.

My question is why would anyone doubt the need to go and trade up for a starting Center? Quessenberry was NEVER A STARTING CENTER. He sucked on the Chargers, big time, good riddance! Time to move on to legitimate NFL starting caliber talent.

No you’re not. I had a friend who was a meth head. Cool guy who would give you the shirt off his back. All because we hung out doesn’t mean I do/did meth too. I never did that bull crap.
I have more examples but won’t go there because your mind is made up. I guess everyone you hung out with were perfect modeled citizens. Your entire family never did anything wrong huh.
I've had friends like this earlier in life.

Good for you for separating yourself as I did.

You weren't the CEO of a billion dollar company and hired on the same people that defended a sexual predator. Obviously you and the McNair's disagree with me. Good luck with that.

Quoted for truth

Wish they would have drafted a TE in the last draft since they were going to run a WCO.

Forgive me if I've had enough star gazing in the last 20 plus years. Od was the only accidental pick in the batch.

I can't help but imagine the wagon from Django unjained bumping and rattling in the night...

"Hello, weary travlers! I've got an elixir of moon dust and snake oil that'll fix all you ailments."

Te's are the last piece of the puzzle.

Benny Joppru says hi.

The best teams have the best Te's. Kelce, Kittle, Andrews etc. Teams that can control the middle of the field.

Andrews, Pitts, Gronk back in the day etc....

You said back in the day. Why reach?

Last year:

Buf, cin, min, phi, Jac, tb, lac, Dal, ba, nyg, sea, and the dolphins also made the playoffs. Why cherry pick? Most of those teams DONT have superstar te's and still made the playoffs.

Every 5 years only 2-3 really great te's come along. It's harder statistically to find a stud te then it is to find a good qb. I just dont understand the infatuation.

Good riddance? While I agree Q wasn’t the answer at C, hell, he was only a starter because the starter quit, but good riddance to a guy who ripped his knee to shreds? Savage room.

And what is worse, Juice at C with a still struggling Green at LG or Juice at LG with Q at C? IMO Green was the biggest factor determining how they lined up Sep. 10.

And I haven’t heard a thing about Patterson. Not that I think a 6th round rookie is the answer, but probably still a better option than Deiter. No?

Not disagreeing, I just don't know, but I thought Deiter was, at least, a solid veteran upgrade.

I expect Deiter to make the team. Maybe even as a starter. He is a talented player who has started in the league before, but injuries and losing his job to a pro bowl level player left him in the backup tier of free agent contracts. If Green does not step up or Scruggs isn’t ready then i’d love it for Deiter to become this year’s Ethan Pocic OL who outplays his contract.

I’d be stoked if we got Brock Bowers next year, but I’m guessing he’ll be gone by the time we pick.

Maybe not, I think the Browns win 6-7 games and Caserio will be picking in 10-12 range. If Bowers falls to say 7-8 Caserio should look to trade up and get him. He could be the Texans Kittle/Kelce etc... Well worth giving up draft picks to go up and get. Difference maker.

Can’t wait to see the joint practice! CJ Stroud is not only closing the gap between him and Mills, but looks to be pulling away just in time for the preseason. I know anything can happen from now to then, so I’m cautiously excited. I just hope the defense can keep us in every game allowing the offense to put it all together and jell.

I’d be fine with a trade up to get him. He’s an all around TE and would be exactly what their looking for at the position.
