I like Bryce, but I don't believe he was worth what Carolina had to give up to get the #1 pick. They traded for the #1 pick right after the combine in Indy and, if you recall, Bryce did not throw. Stroud, on the other hand, looked amazing. I was certain that Carolina traded up to #1 after watching Stroud and that they were going to take him.
Texans leaked the S2 score to make him drop.
I’m glad Stroud dropped to us because I was sure he was going to Carolina.
They missed out on 2 1sts, 2 2nds, and DJ Moore if you didn't want Young or Stroud..
I don't hold the outcome against Lovie like a lot of folks do, but I'd prefer the opportunity to take that bullet - or another one like it - over flat out dodging it..

Guys were fighting for their careers and the end of that game was something they couldn't replicate if they tried 100 times. Is there such a thing as a fluke win? Was Lovie happy with the serendipitous screw you win? Probably. But there is no way he orchestrated that.
And yes, I didn't want a QB this draft either but would much rather have Stroud than a skinny midget QB who fancies himself a pure pocket passer.
I didn’t want a QB. Again in hindsight looks like the Texans were set on a QB.
The Texans missed out on Young. The bears may have missed on one of those 2nds if the Texans had the 1st pick.

Why wouldn’t you want a quarterback? Knowing darn well you need one and this is a quarterback league. Not only that but with all the draft capital we had.
Nick did exactly what most GM’s would’ve did for a losing franchise like the Texans.

Remember, this is not about your opinion.
Two reasons to not have taken a qb in '23: 1) eyes are on the '24 qb class, and 2) wanting a season to evaluate Mills in the new offense and with new coaching.

You wouldn't want a QB if you think there aren't any that are going to improve your team. If you think Bryce Young is too small to be successful in the NFL, if you think CJ Stroud's game isn't going to translate to the pros because he needs too many other pieces in place, if you think Will Levis is too inaccurate, if you think Anthony Richardson is just an athlete who'll take years to develop if at all, then you don't take a QB.
If you draft a QB in the 1st round that you think sucks just because you suck, then you're going to continue to suck.

Scruggs back injury is quite interesting. During a single car accident of which he was the driver in 2018, he was ejected 15 ft from the car. He suffered a concussion and two back vertebral fractures. He had two options: surgery to set the break with screws, which even if successful would severely limit his back's range of motion and the chances he would play football again, or let the break heal on its own for an indeterminate amount of time. Scruggs chose to treat the fractures conservatively without surgery........8 months in a highly restrictive back brace.

The Bengals sucked and they went out and drafted their quarterback. And look at the results.
You guy’s concentrates on the negative too much.
Because we fired two HCs in two years, two offensive coordinators as well. This team can’t run the ball & can’t tackle.
I’d like to have worked with the OC (if I were Nick) at least through one season) to see if he knows how to install an offense. Bill O’Brien-o-phobia. & I think it would be nice to have the rest of the offense at least a year ahead of the QB.
Most GMs drafting early for losing teams don’t make it.
I’m not advocating for Mills. Honestly couldn’t care less about him. I’d be fine with Keenum for a year (if we didn’t draft CJ).
But Mills is a hundred times better than Savage.

Understood that this is your preference...but have teams previously passed on highly rated QBs (knowing they need one) to build their offense first.
The Bengals didn’t draft a QB they thought sucked because they needed a QB. They drafted a guy they believe will be very successful. Hopefully the Texans did as well.
Thepencilneck did not say those QBs were any of those things. He said IF you thought those things then you shouldn’t draft a QB answering your question of why wouldn’t you.

I haven’t seen any team needing a quarterback do that. Shoots Washington drafted two quarterbacks in the same year just in case. Buffalo didn’t pass on a quarterback. Kansas City with Andy most definitely didn’t pass on a quarterback. And guess what they really didn’t need one. But like I said only a select few Texan fans thinks like that.
You’re missing the point. We’re not doing the basics at a competent level. Partly because their plan was to fire two coaching staffs in two years. We’re in no position, imo, to open a 5 year window

I'm not sure I'd use the word "stress" when watching the Texans. I don't fall asleep easily while stressed, but I do, quite frequently, fall asleep watching the Texans.

No you’re missing the point. They were in hog slop hell. And they knew no true head coach were going to wallop in that sloppy stanky filthy mess. And we all including yourself knew that. Some of us including myself stayed hopeful. But knew no real coach would take this job.
Now that they have their new coach, everyone on here should’ve known they were going to draft one in the first round.

The Texans drafted CJ Stroud because they thought he was the guy. That's fine. I'm fine with that. But they should not have drafted him just to draft someone, which is what you're saying.

It's like you're totally missing the point.
The Bengals sucked. They saw a QB they thought would be great and they drafted him.
That's good. It's worked out for them. That's great. But what about 2018? The Browns took Mayfield #1 overall. The Jets took Darnold at #3. Buffalo took Allen at #7. The Cards took Josh Rosen at #10. And the Ravens took Lamar Jackson at #32.
That's 5 shots taken and only 2 of them working out.
The Panthers this year looked at Young and didn't care about his height and they drafted him. As they should have.
The Texans looked at Stroud and didn't care about his numbers for reacting to pressure or the fact that he was surrounded by talent. They thought he was the guy and they drafted him. As they should have.
The Colts looked at Anthony Richardson and didn't care about his accuracy issues and his small sample size. They thought he was the guy and they drafted him. As they should have.
The Titans looked at Will Levis and liked him, but they didn't like him enough to pull the trigger in the first round. They had doubts and they waited.
If any of those teams just drafted a QB because they needed a QB, then they're stupid.
If it had been me, I wouldn't have drafted any of those guys. But I don't think I'm smarter than any of the teams. They have access to more information than I do and they've got more history and experience at evaluating QBs.
Half of the QBs drafted in the first round usually fail. So I hope it's the Panthers and Colts that effed up.
No one knows who will be great. You take a chance on a guy that has shown you ability. And you coach him up and hope for the best. These guys are in their early 20's and their potential has not been realized. Waiting for Mr. Perfect is like waiting for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
All of those teams needed QBs. Had they been set at QB, they would have either passed, or traded the pick. Very few teams take a QB that high when they don't have an urgent need for them. Every team drafts for need. It's just that those needs aren't always apparent to fans. There are no sure things. Every draft choice is a bet on the player and your ability to develop him. And QBs are the most important players by a factor of 10.

No I’m not missing anything and I am not going to assume or saying you’re missing the point. I know all of that sir. So I will repeat. The Texans drafted a quarterback because that’s what they wanted to do. They drafted a quarterback because they clearly feel he’s their guy for that particular position. They don’t give two bleeps about fans in Houston saying they wouldn’t have drafted a QB let along CJ Stroud. Clearly they think he’s better than the Quarterbacks in the 24 draft. Again they didn’t draft a quarterback because they said hey we sucked therefore let’s draft one. Only a select few on here thinks that away.

Oh and one last thing: the percentage of quarterbacks being drafted in rounds 2-undrafted failing is pretty darn high as well.

Nobody is saying wait for Mr Perfect.
They're saying don't overdraft Christian Ponder or Jonny Manziel because you need a QB.
Titans was a good example. Even though they are at the top of their division they know they need a QB.
That's not to say wait & see if Stroud/Young are going to be there in the 2nd round. If, like some of us, you don't like Stroud/Young, you don't draft him just because you need a QB.

Somebody's going to have to define stressful. I don't think stressful is the word I'd use when watching Texans football the last decade or so. Far from it. It's been boring and bland for the most part with a stressful moment or 2 mixed in. And the last couple of seasons they've just been a laughingstock. Absolutely no stress involved whatsoever.
Repeat? When did you say that? No one was arguing that.

These are good reasons why you wouldn't. Doesn't mean this is how the Texans should have done anything. Just the reasons "Why wouldn't you want a QB?" Nobody you are arguing with here is criticizing the Texans for drafting Stroud.
