Would you put Herbert there? With some of the younger guys it is too soon to tell, but right now I would say he is middling. Three years, great stats, but underperforming in the wins column and only one playoff game for a team that has been billed better than how they have played.
That’s crossing the line. Herbert was severely injured on September 15th a Thursday Night game, leading against the eventual Super Bowl Champions KC Chiefs. He missed one snap, came back with broken rib cartilage and tried to give his team a chance but ultimately fell short 27-24.
Chiefs game was only 2nd game of the season. He missed none of rest of season, which I strongly condemned the Chargers for putting his health at risk for sake of winning (had no viable back-up in place). Despite ribs and shoulder injuries he threw for a middling 4,739 yards 25 TD’s and 10 INT’s. Yeah that is subpar for Justin Herbert, playing without his LT and both WR’s Kennan & Williams most of season.
But guess what? They fired Joe Lombardi after two seasons as OC and hired Kellen Moore of Cowboy fame to replace him. Extended both Keenan and Williams, drafted TCU WR Quentin Johnston in the first round and Slayer is coming back 100% recovered as his blind side protector, flipped Zion to LG, all pro Center Linsley returns, Salyer who was outstanding filling in LT to RG and Pipkins for the first time is healthy, coming out of his second offseason program with Duke Manyweather, and earned his second NFL contract going forward finally giving Herbert real protection.
Now if he struggles, 100% healthy, his teammates stay healthy (historically for them) and Kellen Moore has any inkling how to better drive Charger offense on a consistent basis, then yeah. Otherwise he will challenge any QB in the NFL to put up better numbers, anyone!
