As a newbie here can you summarize why Houston only won 3 games last year?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I grew up in Cbus and I am a rabid Ohio State fan but I never cared for the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals or any other NFL team. But now I'm really looking forward to watching CJ develop and, hopefully, lead Houston to great things. I'll definitely be following and watching!

They sucked on both sides of the ball. Mills was inaccurate as hell, the WR1 got pouty and the interior OL sucked. The defense couldn't tackle and barely put any pressure on the opposing QB. But maybe the biggest problem was the coaching with Lovie's Smith conservative play to keep it close and then play to tie instead of going for the win

There were a few games that came down to the last possession that screwed up on that could have gotten us a win on.

But I am the type that believe miracles happen.

I see that Houston was tied for scoring the 2nd fewest points with Indianapolis at 289 each and Denver was the worst at 287.

Defensively Houston was a little better ranking #27 in scoring defense.

But these are just stats. Maybe injuries played a role? Terrible luck?

It was because the fans were constantly arguing but my sources say that will not happen this season.

This was a team decimated by poor leadership in previous years. They were gutted of talent by O'Brien and Easterby. He was the trigger man on one of the most lopsided trades in the modern NFL. They traded high draft picks for Tunsil and for a couple years they didn't have draft capital to do much and nobody to trade with because they had nobody of any real value.

You can't look at the Texans 2022 season without knowing the backstory of how they got there. Most of us saw what we expected to see in 2021 and 2022. I thought at least one of those years they would have been winless.

I think Houston picked up two ELITE talents in CJ & Will and I also like the other guys they picked up, particularly the receivers. The infusion of young talent combined with a new coaching staff should result in solid improvement. I think the guys picking Houston to have the worst record in the NFL for 23' are on acid.

To me the Colts taking AR15 was a HUGE gamble and I think they're going to be disappointed and they may be my pick to have the worst record this season.

We need a few more guys like you around here. No matter how bad we tell you they Sucd you keep looking for that silver lining.

I remember when I was like that. Seems like a lifetime ago, January 2021

You can go here and watch every game they played last year and decide for yourself. And previous years also

The team has always been mediocre to modestly good until Bill O Brian and Jack Easter by came around. Through ack room manipulation they managed to gain a great deal of power and control over the team. They then proceeded to miss manage the team such that they basically gave away or drove away most of the serious talent and gave up huge amounts of draft capital such that we had only second and third rate players to work with. They then put in place coaches who had no business coaching a pro team. We are now in the process of putting talent back into the team and hopefully having a solid coaching group. I think they will improve this year into the mid to maybe low twenties of teams. Hopefully after the next draft we can get into the upper 15 teams. After that, who knows. I hope that helps you understand why and HOA we got here.

OK. Get some snacks and take a seat.

After our team with Kubiak fell apart in 2013, we hired a new coach: Bill O'Brien. He came in and put in new systems and new approaches. At that point, we had the greatest defensive player in the NFL and one of the great running backs. But we needed a QB.

We went 9-7 in O'Brien's first three years, getting to the playoffs twice (and even winning a game) even though we had crap quarterbacks.

And then we moved up, trading a king's ransom, and drafted DeShaun Watson (a couple of picks after Mahones.) We went 4-12 Watson's rookie season. He looked amazing, BUT he tore his ACL and all the hope went out of the team.

When Watson came back, we actually had signs of life. We had two seasons with 10+ wins but there were shenanigans going on in the front office. There were power plays. There were people getting canned. There were accusations of tampering with other teams FO staff. This ended up with O'Brien getting power and then running the team into the ground, making horrible trades, handing out insane contracts. Over a span of 4 years, we had 1 first round pick and 2 second round picks because of O'Brien's disastrous trades.

And then he was fired, but we didn't clean house. Some of the cancers (Easterby) that had come along with O'Brien remained. The decisions being made were... as though there wasn't anyone in the building who understood how things work. We hired a coach (Culley) that had everyone scratching their heads, then we fired him after a year. Then we hired Lovie Smith in an absolute disaster of a hiring search.

Near the end of last season, Easterby was removed, Lovie Smith was fired (after a single season), and it now appears that Caserio has asserted control (possibly.)

Caserio's recent moves look good (although there are people who will debate that). Hiring Demeco Ryans is generally considered to be a good move. Personally, I like the way he handled the draft and I have hopes for these players.

So that's where we are now.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

EDIT: And somehow I neglected to mention the whole Deshaun Watson fiasco and how that tore the fanbase apart.

Great job, but you left out the disastrous Hopkins trade that can't be lumped in with others

This could be a Hallmark movie except those always have a happy ending. I'm hopeful enough to keep watching but have thumb on the remote off button.

I think that's a pretty solid cliffs notes of the whole fiasco. And I think the deshaun part is by and large national enough to leave out unless someone really wants to dive in the specific how's and why's.

Only thing I would add is the beginning of the power vacuum itself which has always seen all this starting at the top, even to this day. That would of course be the passing of Bob McNair and the fumbled passing of his torch to Cal. That's when the power plays in your summation started and what's been the root of the calamity, imo of course.

Yet, BOB's teams were as successful as Kubiak's teams.

Great post

I'm thinking that because Stroud likes Derrick and has DM as his agent, that I'm in the yes Cal would like another only this time not quite as deep in.

Go to that link I provided and watch the 2019 Divisional Round playoff game against the Chiefs. That was the Texans high point and low point. After that 51-7, everything has been downhill
Man I remember the first 10 minutes of that game. Never been more excited as a Texans fan! Just as I began planning the logistics in my head of attending a conference championship game IN HOUSTON the blowout was on!

We were at Bombshell’s and the facial expressions on those Chiefs and Cowboys fans was priceless. Texans fans we were fired up to the roof. Then things changed quickly and rapidly. I was so pissed, I left and went back home.
