NFL Random Thought of the Day

yall think titans move up to #1 to get bryce young ???

so thus texans take cj and colts take levis

afc south will all ummm do what needs to be done lol

Trouble is, why is San Francisco discarding him?

It’s time for the 49’ers to figure out what they have in Trey Lance. Purdy is there to provide competition. Garoppolo’s time had just run its course.

I believe the 49’ers may have some legit interest in Derek Carr….this makes a lot of sense.

As for Jimmy G….the Texans would be his best fit. They’ll need a QB familiar with the offense Ryans probably brings with him from SF. Garoppolo is going to come cheap as well, him and his agent both know this as well. I think the Texans could get him signed for 7-8M a season over 2-3 years with incentives. JG can compete for the QB1 job, be a mentor, and/or bridge the position. Either way, at that kind of money, it’s a win-win for the Texans.

No, the NFL isn’t rigged

After that bizarre do-over in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s AFC Championship, a move that gave Patrick Mahomes a Mulligan to try to convert third and nine, we posted a one-word message on Twitter.

RIGGED.

It was tongue in cheek. I don’t actually believe the NFL is rigged. More specifically, I don’t believe the NFL rigs games. First, the NFL doesn’t care who wins or loses games. It just doesn’t. Second, the NFL wouldn’t be able to pull off rigging games — and wouldn’t be able to keep it quiet.

Yes, the Commissioner has said he roots for the team that’s trailing in a given game. And it’s hard not to wonder whether a team that is behind by multiple scores sometimes gets an unspoken opportunity to narrow the gap, like the Bucs did when trying to wipe out a 13-point deficit against the Saints — and when blatant holding by tackle Donovan Smith was being ignored on every play.

Still, outcomes aren’t predetermined. They just aren’t.

The tweet was a reflection of the reaction from many when something weird happens. And that reaction has been legitimized by the events of the past five years.

The 2018 legalization of sports wagering, coupled with widespread advertising for gambling from which the NFL directly profits, makes people think, when strange things happen, that the fix is in. It doesn’t matter whether it’s wrong. What matters is the perception.

The NFL knows this. Indeed, it was one of the primary arguments made against legalized gambling when Delaware tried in 2009 to challenge the federal law that New Jersey eventually toppled in the U.S. Supreme Court nine years later.

“Normal incidents of the game such as bad snaps, dropped passes, turnovers, penalty flags and play calling inevitably will fuel speculation, distrust and accusations of point-shaving and game-fixing,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said at the time.

He was right. While the explanation almost always is incompetence, the prevalence of legalized gambling — as advertised by the NFL and the various media outlets covering the game — will make plenty of people more likely to think something bad is happening.

It’s not. At least not from the perspective of the league trying to push the ultimate outcome of a game in one direction or another.

That said, various avenues are in place for a potential Tim Donaghy scandal. Put his name in the search box (or just click here). You’ll see the various times that we have mentioned issues and wrinkles that create an avenue for someone to try to influence the final score of a given game.

The NFL needs to identify and plug those gaps, sealing off any opportunity for someone to exercise that kind of discretion and influence. It’s among the various subjects addressed in the final section of Playmakers, a book of essays about the past 20 years in pro football — and about the direction in which the sport is going.

If the league doesn’t button certain things up (like many aspects of officiating), it’s going in a direction that has plenty of potential complications, for everyone who cares about the sport.

There should be no doubt that the main reason is that the refs are doing a poor job. The rigging aspect difficulty is not as difficult as McAfee is making it sound, and would not require a cast of millions to pull it off. Many of these terrible calls are coming in the last seconds of a game....independent of whatever has gone on previously throughout the game, that one play can and has determined the final outcome of the game. Again, there can be no doubt about the questionable quality of the NFL refereeing...........by far the most egregious factor in all of this. But that would also serve as beautiful camouflage for a single "innocent" missed or phantom call by one sole ref to change the face of the game in its final seconds. Final thought.............the NFL must clean their act up.

Just curious. Cigarettes don't cause cancer, in some people. My grandmother was a pack a day for most of 80 years, most of that time unfiltered. She smoked right up till the end. She never got cancer. Why? Genetics?

This recent study gives the most plausible explanation.

Among people who smoke but never develop lung cancer, researchers found an inherent advantage. The cells that line their lungs appear to be less likely to mutate over time. The findings suggest that DNA repair genes are more active among some individuals, which can protect against cancers arising, even when cigarettes are regularly smoked.

Thanks.

I personally don't believe the fix is in (because if I did I'd stop watching), but this is why so many believe it. I know a lot of folks that believe it's just another pro wrestling type of event.

It's pathetic for a multi-billion dollar sports league to have such incompetent officials, especially for a championship game.

With gambling now ingrained, it's only a matter of time before U.S. Congress gets involved because the league refuses to adapt and upgrade their refs.

Due to the seriousness of brain injuries in the NFL, the NFL will eventually act in some way either on their own or as a result of legal action. It will happen. Count on it.

What will happen though is anybody's guess. But it's coming.

The Broncos have essentially traded 3 1st round picks, 2 2nd round picks, and 3 NFL players for Wilson and Payton.

There’s the Texans answer for a veteran QB to bridge and mentor both Mills and Hooker.
So Op-Tex you are saying that Hooker is the QB you want us to draft in April, right ?
Where do you see us taking him if we choose to draft him ?
And I take it you aren't that impressed the more highly rated prospects like Young and Stroud & think Hooker is a better value and/or has as much if not more potential ?

NFL concussion data could lead to broader use of Guardian Caps
Posted by Mike Florio on February 3, 2023, 4:36 PM EST

Concussions were up in the regular season. Concussions were down in the preseason.

That points to an obvious potential change to practice rules for the regular season, especially given one of the reasons for the reduction in preseason concussions.

The Guardian Caps, which were mandatory at practice through the second game of the preseason, could be used more broadly.

The league acknowledged that possibility during a Friday conference call.

Certain specific position groups (offensive linemen, defensive linemen, linebackers, and tight ends) were required to wear Guardian Caps during practice. Per the league, those groups saw a 52-percent reduction in concussions over the same time period from 2021.

Thus, don’t be surprised if Guardian Caps become a fixture at practices throughout the season. Don’t be surprised if more position groups are required to wear them.

The biggest question is whether the league would ever require Guardian Caps to be used during games, especially in the preseason. Given the extent to which teams have become identified by the colors and logos on their helmets, it’s impossible to consider those logos being covered up by a clumpy, lumpy apparatus aimed at providing extra cushioning for those wearing the helmet and those struck by it.

The broader goal should be to create helmets that simulate the protection while still looking like helmets. Even though, frankly, few modern football helmets really look like football helmets anymore.

The NFL is now feverishly researching a cheaper way to manufacture a couple of helmets for each NFL player.

Little while back I was watching this thing, it was set waaaaayyyy back. People rode horses, fought with swords, swore their fealty to each other.

Good stuff. Very "real" good story line, good characters. Then in season two they added dragons. Now i know ain't no such thing as dragons. But they did it really well. So I kept watching.

Every week, took me to another place, another time. Good guys didn't always win. Most of the time they didn't. But in the end the forces of good triumphed.

Good as it was they could only keep it together for eight seasons & only 7 of them were good.

So I'm thinking if the NFL can keep this thing going for going on 60 years, why am I going to waste time debating if it's "real."

Are you not entertained?

I suppose it depends on if you care about watching actual competition or not..
It is what it is. You watched the last 3 years, was it entertaining?

If you found out today it's been rigged the last 20 years are you going to go back & change how you enjoyed the last three?

No. It is what it is.

If the next three are as good as the last three will you enjoy them?

Wait 'til you find out the Olympics are rigged.

All I'm saying is don't let the narrative control you. Let the idiots argue about the stupid & pay them no mind.

It wasn't entertaining.

And yes, finding out it was rigged would greatly impact my enjoyment.

If the next three are as good as the next three will you enjoy them?

What?

Wait 'til you find out the Olympics are rigged.

That would suck.

What does that have to do with wanting to enjoy an honest competition?

If that doesn't matter to you and you just wanna watch wwe that's ok.. for you.

Uh, it’s not a TV show, it’s a competition. Yes, I’m entertained by the competition but when it stops being a competition, I will stop watching. I’m not interested in investing what I have my whole life, time, money, emotion, into something that turns into some made up fairy tale.

And the dragon tale you spoke of would have ended with me had it gone on any longer because by the end it stopped being entertaining and was just a bunch of senseless gobbledygook.

If the NFL is scripted then spending the time we spend on here going back and forth about coaches, schemes, players, free agents, draft picks, it’s all pretty pointless, and it certainly wouldn’t make much sense to be a fan of the Texans because who’s going to “write” them into a Super Bowl ever?
