From Fansided:

Jonathan Gannon is just another bad idea for the Arizona Cardinals

*******************************

There’s been a lot of head scratching hate on Gannon led by a couple of look-at-me Philly radio guys and some fans following along. Phillyfan always has to hate somebody, even on their best sports teams. It is a hallmark of the dumbassery that is Philadelphia.

There’s two types of defensive philosophies: what I call funnel D that keeps things in front of them, or attacking D like a Buddy Ryan zone blitzing scheme that if you don’t get home in time you give up big plays. As teams play more hurryup, as QB overall can get the ball out much faster than even just 10 years ago, defensive analytics have defenses tilted more toward funnel philosophies.

If you have the personnel with the requisite smarts, funnel Ds with disguise zone coverages give QB the most fits. You saw it with Depredator almost every snap, zone coverages caused him to hesitate over and over again forcing him to make plays off schedule. If Mahomes has a bad game, and he’s not injured, it’s against disguised zone coverages. If you can force a play off schedule, that’s a win for the D philosophically.

What most don’t know about Gannon is that before 2021 offseason Philadelphia had to make some decisions whether they were going to use primary assets to go heavy on offense or heavy on defense… they had too many needs on both sides of the ball. JG stepped up and volunteered to get less on D so Howie could focus on fixing the O. So JG took alot of arrows because of a lack of talent depth, because fans wouldn’t know talent if it was standing on their front porch. He took one for the betterment of the whole. That has carried over.

HC Nick Sirianni yesterday addressed the Gannon slander directly in his presser with a WTF? and called out some media by name. He said other team’s coaches are asking him with incredulity, Does JG really get isht from your fanbase???

Difference between DeMeco and Gannon is Cap has an uber talented and deep defensive roster. Philly is still a victim of Howie’s continual bad drafting forcing them to make rescue deals for other talent acquisition. You saw it captured on video a while back when longtime front office guy Tom Donahoe threw his hands up in disgust in the Philly warroom after a Howie pick with Howie trying to make everybody look excited for the cameras. Nobody pressures media and massages the narrative more than Roseman. He’s excellent at it. He has to be, because he among the worst drafting GMs.

Don’t get caught up in bullisht coming from Fansided, literally the lowest rung on the sport media ladder. That guy’s an id!ot. NFL personnel folks which I’ve asked think very highly of JG. Does that guarantee his success in Houston? Not if Hannah and Cal involve themselves in football decisions.
Great article.

There are a so many qualities you want in a head coach it is hard to say just because you did less than more you get the job.

Philly has plenty of defensive talent. And Roseman has procurred most of it. Howie has drafted or signed UDFAs 9 of the Eagles starters. And traded for or signed impact players like AJ Brown. Darius Slay, and Haason Reddick. Howie hasn't been perfect, but he's been a better GM than anyone we've had in Houston. That's for damn sure.

I'm really liking how this head coach search is going. Is it more or less likely that an offensive coordinator, like Kafka, would be named head coach and draft a quarterback this year? I actually think if its an offensive minded HC he will want to try and make things work with Mills. And will the McNair's interfere like they did with Carr and Kubiak?

The draft is going to be fun! Unless they hire Payroll Payton and he costs a boatload of picks.

Gannon volunteered that Howie could go offense and that he would take the arrows in 2021, in Gannon's first year as DC. The Eagles went defense in 2022. Howie amongst the top NFL personnel and scouts is considered a joke. He is a great trader guy out of necessity, because he has been historically such a terrible drafter.

More i think about it, The more i only want demeco ryans as hc.

Dont need someone out of retirement that we have to give up draft picks for. Dont want a long time (no doubt good) coordinator. Just cause someone is really good at one job dont mean they will be at another. I want someone that can pick up a new job fast and excel at it. Do one job too long, its hard to learn another.

Looking at mike vrabel, very similar trajectory as ryans. One year of mediocrity to get the hang of the job and then solid everafter. Well, we will be having a year for our future qb to sit and other players to mature as pro players. So we are set up pretty well for this scenario.

Ryans interviewed with the Broncos and Texans. He canceled the interviews with the Cardinals and Colts.
There's some debate on Twitter whether he canceled the interviews or postponed them to concentrate on Dallas.

Although for argument's sake, if he wanted to concentrate solely on Dallas, I assume he wouldn't have scheduled them when he did in the first place

Does this indicate anything significant?

:coffee:
Could be something as simple as all the bets are currently coming in on DeMeco and they are shutting the book on those particular odds until they gather more info.

Or there could be a leak that they’re closing in on DeMeco.

Basically, they’re just trying to cover their a$$ one way or another

As in leave the office completely?

That be kind of weirdto see nick hire someone that is potentially going to relieve him of his duties :hmmm:
I think like Bill OBrien, Nick caserio is ready to go back to the patriots and Bella check.

Oh come on, now... that's average-at-best Dak and below average Kellen Moore and washed Zeke.

Cowboys offense must have had the creamiest of creampuff schedules to rack up those numbers. What a joke. :gathering:
You're really anti-DeMeco. What's up with that?

That's because Caserio doesn't hire the HC.

Cal does. It's why Ryan's will be the next HC of the Texans.

This is what I wish the Texans would do

Go offense and draft defense in 2024 after they draft a QB high in the 2024 draft.

I think Nick stated as much in his Lovie got the axe presser.
If that is the actual case, I think we can pare the list down to two - Payton and Ryan's.
And with so many other franchises pressing hard for Payton's services (probably moreso than Ryan's), I figure the odds favor DeMeco as our next HC.

Sources said Payton has scheduled a second visit with the Broncos on Wednesday in Denver as team officials there conduct interviews with finalists this week.

Payton is scheduled to meet with Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper on Monday in Charlotte, N.C. He previously interviewed via Zoom with the Houston Texans, who appear to be targeting San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as their top choice.

1. The Panthers and Texans emerged as most attractive openings in conversations with coaches and executives. Those teams are in better position than the others to land the quarterbacks they want.

[…]

Now, for the rankings, with quick thoughts from an NFL exec who saw the order similarly, followed by additional thoughts. The ability to land a quarterback and ownership’s willingness to spend are prioritized. The first two could be interchangeable.

• 1. Houston Texans: “They are first due to the assets they got from the Deshaun Watson trade. The next coach should enjoy stability after back-to-back one-and-done situations. The AFC South remains a winnable division. They have some nice young pieces from this past draft in (safety) Jalen Pitre, (running back) Dameon Pierce and (cornerback) Derek Stingley.”

General manager Nick Caserio’s interest in a game-management role downgrades the Texans for some, as much for what it symbolizes as for the actual involvement itself. Beyond that, how many coaches without Caserio’s shared ties to New England will be lining up to join him after what David Culley and Lovie Smith endured? Do the Texans need someone with the Patriots in their DNA? That said, the next coach might enjoy a decent runway after the last two were barely cleared for takeoff.

The owner, Cal McNair, adds little beyond a general willingness to spend, but he doesn’t seem to be a meddler in football operations, which means if the right people are in the coach/GM roles, the team should be able to succeed. Houston owns five of the top 73 picks in the draft, including the second and 12th choices.

2. Carolina Panthers
3. Indianapolis Colts
4. Denver Broncos
5. Arizona Cardinals
