Head Coach Candidates

I like Steichen and his QB run game. But Levis, Hooker or Richardson would have to be the QB drafted. Maybe also Duggan in a late round to compete with Mills to be #2.

Unfortunately, I’m not real big on a designed QB run game in the NFL.

My priorities on what a QB should possess:
1. Physical traits with an NFL arm.
2. Ability to read defenses and coverages.
3. Ability to move within the pocket.
4. Mastering the play action.
5. Ability to pull the ball down and run as a last resort or when positive yards on the ground presents itself.

Then why is Hooker your guy?

Greedy little bastard, aren't you? :D

Ross Tucker on both Jonathan Gannon and Shane Steichen. Go to the 5:00 minute mark for the start of his breakdown

Good point by Tucker about Gannon’s possible first choice for OC, the Philly QB coach, likely being promoted to OC with Philly if/when Steichen is hired. Another reason the offensive mind is preferred. But incredible job Gannon has done with that defense. It is talented of course. But 70 sacks and 4 different players 10+ sacks from a coordinator who “doesn’t blitz enough” is quite impressive.

I do like that with Gannon, the defensive personnel would not need to be overhauled as him and Lovie have similar philosophies of limiting big plays/creating turnovers. But Gannon uses man coverage a lot more than Lovie which will lead to an improved pass rush and make the most of Stingley’s talents.

I’d like Brian Johnson (the Philly QB coach) as an OC, but more than likely he’ll move up the ladder in Philly when Steichen gets hired this offseason.

I don't think there is anything proposed about it. I think it is pure speculation and guesswork by a few Gannon fans promoting their wish lists.
See post 2120, pulled from Twitter. Someone put together his proposed staff, not sure how much "in the know" he is. The link to his twitter then you can scroll and see all of them. Might be more speculation than anything else. He did one for Steichen and Ryans and I think Kafka also.

From what I can tell, the author of the Twitter proposed staffs, pulled coaches that the candidates had worked with in some manner to come up with the lists.

That sounds exactly like Bryce young oh wait he's 5' 9.

I have lost a lot of interest in the Texans through the O'Brien years. My interest didn't return with David Cully or Lovie Smith. Maybe Gannon, Steichen or one of these other guys will bring my interest back if they bring a winning culture to this team. The only guy that will bring it back just by stepping into the building is DeMeco Ryans. Dude was a leader on our defense and one of my favorite players to wear a Texans jersey. His leadership has made him a great coach.

Week or so ago, i mentioned Gannon bringing Johnson for OC and someone compared to Pep. Steichen is my hope with Him bringing QB coach as it appears we will take a QB and if we do, I want to give that QB as much as we can
get to be successful. I think we can get DC.

If Gannon allegedly can bring Vic Fangio why not Steichen?

Perhaps Payton has Fangio locked.

Good question. What he’s been apart of In Cincinnati is arguable a better resume than any of the current options.
Perhaps teams are thinking it's Burrows/Taylor. He's been in coaching awhile and never stood out. Much like EB in KC with Mahomes/Reid. He did interview last year with Broncos but I think that's it

JANUARY 22: A league source tells Ben Volin of the Boston Globe that, since the Chargers’ head coaching job will not become available this year, the Panthers’ and Texans’ posts will be of most interest to Payton. In Volin’s opinion, the fact that Wilson called Payton to sell him on the Broncos’ job is not a good omen for Denver, and if Payton were to be lured to Houston, he may ultimately push general manager Nick Caserio out and take over as de facto GM. Both Houston and Carolina have the cash to pay Payton the salary he wants.

▪ The biggest name in this cycle is Sean Payton, and aleague source said this past week that if the Chargersjob didn’t come out, Payton would be most interestedin the Panthers and Texans jobs — teams that can afford his $20 million-per-year demand, can give him power over the football organization, and have a blank slate at quarterback. The Texans are arguably the most attractive, with a boatload of cap space and picks Nos. 2, 12, 34, 66, and 74 in this year’s draft (though a few would have to be traded to the Saints in order to get Payton). Payton could handpick his quarterback in the draft, and would probably nudge Nick Caserio out of the way in a year or two.

The Panthers would probably have to give up a bit extra in a trade for Payton since they are in the same division as the Saints, but that’s an easy call to get the coach they want. It appears plausible that Payton could be a package deal with Tom Brady in Carolina.

Payton interviewed with the Broncos this past week, but the fact that Russell Wilson had to call Payton and sell him on coming to Denver probably speaks to Payton’s hesitation.

He has worked with Burrow, Stafford, Carr, Manning (who taught him a lot), and Tebow. All drastically different QBs and all had various levels of success with him.
With Manning and Tebow he was an offensive assistant in Denver

Well, Nick said he would step aside if he needed to do so.

As in leave the office completely?

That be kind of weirdto see nick hire someone that is potentially going to relieve him of his duties :hmmm:

The Philly GM Roseman took a step back from GM to head of football operations for Chip Kelly. (At least that’s what I think I read.) Then he got promoted back to GM after they won the Super Bowl with Pederson.

Strange things happen.

Not at all like EB. Sure, people question if their success is more about Mahomes/Reid. But people have wanted EB as their HC, they just always found a better candidate.

Two years in Detroit with Matthew Stafford & six years in Denver. Scroll down through his bio to see his work history. https://www.bengals.com/team/coaches-roster/brian-callahan
Yes, the team page for him is impressive. But so is the team page for Pep Hamilton

From Fansided:

Jonathan Gannon is just another bad idea for the Arizona Cardinals

*******************************

There’s been a lot of head scratching hate on Gannon led by a couple of look-at-me Philly radio guys and some fans following along. Phillyfan always has to hate somebody, even on their best sports teams. It is a hallmark of the dumbassery that is Philadelphia.

There’s two types of defensive philosophies: what I call funnel D that keeps things in front of them, or attacking D like a Buddy Ryan zone blitzing scheme that if you don’t get home in time you give up big plays. As teams play more hurryup, as QB overall can get the ball out much faster than even just 10 years ago, defensive analytics have defenses tilted more toward funnel philosophies.

If you have the personnel with the requisite smarts, funnel Ds with disguise zone coverages give QB the most fits. You saw it with Depredator almost every snap, zone coverages caused him to hesitate over and over again forcing him to make plays off schedule. If Mahomes has a bad game, and he’s not injured, it’s against disguised zone coverages. If you can force a play off schedule, that’s a win for the D philosophically.

What most don’t know about Gannon is that before 2021 offseason Philadelphia had to make some decisions whether they were going to use primary assets to go heavy on offense or heavy on defense… they had too many needs on both sides of the ball. JG stepped up and volunteered to get less on D so Howie could focus on fixing the O. So JG took alot of arrows because of a lack of talent depth, because fans wouldn’t know talent if it was standing on their front porch. He took one for the betterment of the whole. That has carried over.

HC Nick Sirianni yesterday addressed the Gannon slander directly in his presser with a WTF? and called out some media by name. He said other team’s coaches are asking him with incredulity, Does JG really get isht from your fanbase???

Difference between DeMeco and Gannon is Cap has an uber talented and deep defensive roster. Philly is still a victim of Howie’s continual bad drafting forcing them to make rescue deals for other talent acquisition. You saw it captured on video a while back when longtime front office guy Tom Donahoe threw his hands up in disgust in the Philly warroom after a Howie pick with Howie trying to make everybody look excited for the cameras. Nobody pressures media and massages the narrative more than Roseman. He’s excellent at it. He has to be, because he among the worst drafting GMs.

Don’t get caught up in bullisht coming from Fansided, literally the lowest rung on the sport media ladder. That guy’s an id!ot. NFL personnel folks which I’ve asked think very highly of JG. Does that guarantee his success in Houston? Not if Hannah and Cal involve themselves in football decisions.

Literally me. The tyrant Bill O'Brien sucked the joy of football out of me, as did some other other league-wide bullshit the last few years.

But this? DeMeco? That excites.

I wonder how many people are like us.
