Head Coach Candidates

In your efforts to boost Kafka, you keep minimizing/ignoring Daboll's impact.

Based on your criteria. Tim Kelly called plays after BOB was fired and "developed" Watson to the point where he led the NFL in passing. Under Kelly's tutelage, Davis Mills had a five game stretch where he played as well as any QB in his draft class. Maybe Kelly should be on the interview list. :kitten:
I’ll just say this, Kelly did a better job than Pep and I’ll just leave it at that. So maybe that means the next HC for the Texans will be Pep Hamilton.

Firing Caserio, that ain't happenin'...We need to start having some stability on this team. If Caserio got canned and we hired someone else as GM, that would be 5 GMs since 2017. If you count Romeo, we'll have 5 Head Coaches since 2020 including whoever we hire in the next few days. 10 GMs and HCs since 2017? Yeah, that'll make us look good.
NC's still stickin' this one out after coming into a major dumpster fire! He's got our Cap under control, got a great return for Watson, he's been building this team thru the draft...we all said this rebuild was going to take several years, so give the man a chance. He's gone through the $hit part of it, now he should see some smooth sailing...he's earned it!

Good post and points. I think NC did really well with last year’s draft picks. Stingley and Green should cement that even more this next year when the new coaches get here and utilize Stingley where his strengths are and Green gets healthy. This next draft will tell if he’s ‘solid’ or not. IMO

P.S. And what he got in return for Watson is EPIC! Good in my books!

Points to ponder.........

Jonathan Gannon began coaching when DeMeco was a sophomore in college. Gannon was hired to the NFL in Ryans’ 2nd year as an NFL player.

Gannon has coached for 5 NFL teams and scouted for 2 NFL organizations. Gannon had 10 years NFL experience when DeMeco got his first job (entry level).

Exactly Doc!

Experience, especially coming from a variety of sources, is the best teacher.

recent tendencies are coupled with specific tasks to get bye, one year at a time. this year focus should be on addressing QB position and with shortage/demand on OC's that task will be historically difficult. Some will prefer to kick the can down the road, but majority of fans will want to see more leadership, ability to perform and win under pressure from QB position. For whoever they hire and draft it will be package deal, going hand in hand for hopefully more than just one season. The right hire with the right pick is upon us if we dare face our justified experiences worst fears and make the most of this difficult and perilous decision.

I like Gannon's experience, but this article makes a good point.
Going to make a point to record and watch tonight's game against the Giants. Three coaches the Texans have interviewed are on the sidelines. As for Gannon, this is a perspective I hadn't seen. Doesn't strike me favorably. Really hope we go with an OC. I like Steichen. We'll see if Giants' offense carves up Gannon's "soft" defense.

Gannon has the potential to pull together a more experienced coaching staff based on his previous stops. That is worth something in itself. I'd be excited to see who he brings in.

Ryans has less experience, but he does have contacts within that Shanny coaching tree, which is a plus to me. I'm very confident in DeMecos ability to lead and motivate men...he's a natural. I'm certainly biased, of course. If Anthony Lynn ends up as OC (only seen conjecture on this), I would be skeptical.

I'll be happy with Ryans, Steichen, or Gannon (in that order).

Kafka is a wildcard. I don't want to run through walls for him (only watched a few pressers, though), but he has an impeccable track record with QBs. He seems like a good coach, but not a natural leader.

Of the list that had been posted of our interviewees, he's the one I want the least.

I mean, I'll be happy enough if we land him, but I don't expect a lot from him. He's never developed a QB that I can think of. We'll basically be back to O'Brien's E-P offense, which a lot of people here were done with. And iirc, no coach has won a SB with one team and then come back to win a SB with another. There have been coaches that have lost a SB with one team and then come back with another to win it.

But I won't ***** about him. I'll get behind him and root for him. I'd just be more excited by the rest of the list.
Payton started out with the Eagles and Giants, both running the WCO.
He did have a couple of years with Dallas in the EP system.
But then when got to New Orleans, he implemented the Air Coryell system that Brees was running in San Diego.

Have you been there? You'd rather look at Exxon refineries than the Rocky Mountains? Not to mention, give me snow any day of the week and twice on Sunday over 100 with 95% humidity.
Yeah, but have you been to NOLA?

I like to visit it once in awhile, but it doesn't have much.

I do have one reservation that keeps creeping into the back of my mind. With an offensive-minded HC, the offense is likely to be relatively consistent from year to year. His OC no doubt will follow his lead. With a defensive-minded coach, he will choose an OC and the OC for the most part will bring in his own expertise. If that OC hopefully becomes highly successful, he will likely be considered for a HC position..................and the team will be looking for another OC. Offensive continuity cannot help but be compromised by this. Today's NFL is firmly driven by the offenses, and the future appears to be headed (because of rules and rule changes we keep seeing) only stronger to that end.

Develop your next OC and promote from within in this scenario

Some blame Cal, me included, for doing Zoom meetings instead of in-person meetings. This may not be Cal's choice. The perspective HC could be calling those shots which would say this does not fare well for the Texans. Especially when the candidate is participating in other in-person meetings.

Otoh, if your defensive minded HC was savvy enough to select a good OC, perhaps he can be trusted enough to do so again?

Ryans zoomed with the Texans..........and today is interviewing in-person with the Broncos.

I can see this team playing hard for DR. Vrabel was a popular and talented player too so if we land DR, hopefully we can enjoy the same, if not better success with him.
Apparently he is a very intelligent person so that augers well for his coaching team selections.

Ryans and Vrabel were both exceptionally intelligent “coach on the field” type players. You just knew once they became coaches it was only a matter of time before they became head coaches.

To your point. Vrabel hired Matt Lafleur as his first OC. Lafleur gets hired by the Packers and Vrabel promotes Arthur Smith from TE coach to OC. Smith does a good job and leaves to be the Falcons HC. Vrabel does the same thing again and promotes Todd Downing from TE coach to OC. The offense becomes stagnant, takes a step back and Downing is fired this week.

Vrabel a defensive-minded HC, tried to maintain offensive continuity with the offense Lafleur implemented by promoting Smith and then Downing from within. Yet, the offensive performance led to firing Downing. I still think Vrabel's approach is correct. The defensive-minded HC picks an offense and maintains the continuity by hiring OCs who run that offense but bring fresh eyes and their experience to that offense. Maybe the mistake Vrabel made was staying loyal and giving Downing a shot at OC instead of going outside to replace Arthur Smith.

It will be interesting to see if he hires someone from the Shanahan/McVay coaching tree or promote Tim Kelly from passing game coordinator. I've also found it interesting that for his first HC job, Vrabel elected to run the WCO instead of the Patriots EP offense.

I’m interested to see who Vrabel picks as his next OC. His first two (Matt Lafleur and Arthur Smith became head coaches). Downing got fired for the dwi (his fault) and losing Tannehill to injury/AJ Brown to poor personnel decision (not his fault). I was impressed with how Downing was able to keep the offense productive when Henry was down the second half of last season. But expect he will not be getting a coordinator job this offseason.

Hiring Ryans would be so Texans.

Hire Ryans and drafting Young is exactly what I expect Cal to do.

Gotta put fans back in the seats

Will the Texans be better going this route and win more games? Yes, will they win championships? Nope.

I wouldn’t mind a Ryans hire at all. There is nothing he’s done that tells me he will not be a championship quality HC. Unless the rumors are true he’d hire Anthony Lynn as OC of course….

So you're saying they will win a championship if they don't hire Ryans & don't draft Young?

Are you the guy who does the voiceover for movie trailers?

Something like this may happen with Allen/McDermott in Buffalo and losing Daboll.

If we do go with Ryans or Gannon a stew Getty would be to create an offensive staff is from various Reid/Shannahan/McVay/McDaniels staff. Or one of their failed offshoots.

If Gannon is The Choice who will be his offensive coordinator?

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it a bit strange that the Texans are the only team to request a Gannon interview, up until Arizona did yesterday? Is this beginning to feel like Deja Vu? 2021 and 2022 all over again? Is Gannon the fallback guy?

These DCs know just about as much as the OCs about the offenses.
They make their living building defenses to stop the different offenses they face 14 times a year. No two teams are alike, so I don't buy that a DC hiring in as the HC has to hire an OC that mirrors the OC on the team he came from. I'm sure Ryans or Gannon know what offenses are the hardest to defend against and will probably look to hire DC that will implement that offense.
Gonna go listen to AC/DC now....

No, Gannon is highly regarded in the coaching ranks as one of the top HC candidates out there.
No Deja Vu.
See post 2754.
