2023 TEXANS DRAFT DISCUSSION

I want to see what he does in the combine. A little weary of 'tools' prospects without the requisite college resume backing it up, but big upside with Levis. I wouldn't want him playing right away though - he's got to be developed right. The Texans are not a year away this team can afford to bring him along slowly.

Buffalo wouldn't have Allen without accepting this risk. BTW, I wouldn't accept this risk.

Allen improved his accuracy a lot from college most players don't. If the Texans hire coaches with a history of making players better you might think about it but I don't trust the Texans to do that I expect the most conservative hire possible like they always managed to do.

If Gannon is the hire and Reich and Brian Johnson are brought in as OC and QB coach (As rumored) would you trust them to develop a QB? I would.

I would but I would guess more than one team is going after Gannon and if he has a choice you think the Texans will pay what they need to do get their guy or will they fall in love with another bad candidate.

Brian Johnson is not going to take a lateral move as QB coach. Switch Johnson as OC and Reich as QB coach, and that would work.

That's not what Wilson said in his tweet.

But if this is what it takes I'm good with it.

Exactly. High risk, high reward. I see the merit of engaging, but doing so @ #2 is tough. This is where the G.M. and his advisory team will make their paycheck. Levis definitely has the most upside of this draft, IMO. I also like the fact that unlike Young, Levis will be much more suited for RPO in the NFL. Not that I want an exclusive RPO-QB per se. But somebody durable that can win with their feet when required like Josh Allen sure is a nice luxury to have.

Imo, moving to the number 2 slot really doesn't make that much difference. It's a crapshoot shoot with either pick and you will get one of the best rated QBs. The only question is will he be worth the pick and we likely won't know that for about three years. Could be a total crapshoot job like the Cardinals wound up with, but most likely not. I suspect that all three of the top rated QBs will work out, the question will they just be good or maybe very good or if we get real lucky elite. Only time, development and playing time will tell us what we have. I think the other picks will be much more important than just the first one. They will be what contributes to the teams overall success.

I could see no team trading with Bears:

Bears take Anderson.

Texans take QB or trade down.

Seattle extends Geno draft Carter.

In whatever order :
Colts sign FA or select Richardson or both.

Panthers take Levis

Lions keep Goff draft BPA.

Jets go FA.

Lance was digging into some of the accuracy numbers on Young and Stroud on the radio last week and Stroud actually was better by quite a bit.

He also said the height/weight measurements on Young will be the most must see happenings at the combine this year.

Makes sense that he'll beef up as best he can and only do measurable at the combine and then revert back weight wise to feel natural throwing the ball at his pro day.

Saying Levis has more upside doesn't mean anything if his ceiling is below Stroud or Young's floor. It just means Levis can get much better and still not be as good.

If you or others think Levis can eventually surpass, that's something else and is debatable as would me if I said Young will eventually be Tom Brady and Stroud become Peyton Manning.

You are assuming that the only option for the texans at number one or number 2 is a quarterback.

If they do not fire Nick cereal after 2 win season why should they fire him next year if he gets 5 or 6 wins? Progress!

When I say upside, I mean the highest ceiling. Not necessarily as a pocket passer exclusively, but as the best well-rounded football QB. Basically, like a Josh Allen type talent. There's a reason people keep bringing Allen up here, and it's because the style of game they play and tools are similar. I don't think Young or Stroud have this kind of upside in the NFL game.

The Texans having the #2 rather than the #1 might be Stroud's motivation to declare. (?)
Shouldn’t make a difference. If he doesn’t want to be a Texans Mulagetah won’t let it happen

I remember when I said Allen was going to be better than Derrick and was laughed at. Who's laughing now? There's a joke out there to be made.

If he hired the HC's I would agree with you.

Who sticks around for 2 years of that let alone 3? If I’m an NFL GM and my owner consistently ignores me when it’s HC hiring time with an outcome of increasingly worse results I resign. Sure having a GM job is great but it’s also a quick way to be a fired GM through no real fault of your own before long.

Lance said this was likely too and he probably wouldn't throw at the combine and will throw at his pro day once he gets down to his natural weight. Lance said he was guessing Young would measure at 6' he said Bama isn't known to fudge measurements like some schools do but you never know.

If Cal's smart he will stay far away from Stroud.

I kind of think Levis is interesting. I wouldn't take him with the 2nd pick in the draft I don't believe and it could blow up in your face if you try to trade down to get him where you think he needs to be taken but I prefer a bigger QB with a "hint of Roethlisberger" (The player, not the rapist) to all these little stick guys who look amazing but played in programs where the entire team dominated. Hell AJ McCarron had a beast of highlight reel by the time he was done in Alabama. Give me somebody who made some noise where the team around him wasn't so dominant. That's what it's going to take to succeed here. That and patience. At least that's what my gut says. Draft Bryce or Stroud and you're going to see somebody either flame out or get killed on this team.

First off the Texans will hire an OC to be their HC. This time they will let the new HC bring his own team.
With the number 2 pick the Texans will draft Young. Stroud will go 4th to the Colts.
With the 12 pick the Texans will draft Quentin Johnston.
I can see this happening.

If you had to move up to say #9 to get Johnston and had to give up pick #3-75 to make the move, would you do it?

There is the possibility that Texans take a gamble.
Take Anderson or Carter (whoever is there) and shoot for Levis at #12. Or, take Tanner McKee at #33 with the intention of bringing in a vet to bridge.
Or Anthony Richardson or Hendon Hooker.

True,

The answer is 36 mil and yes, I would stick it out for 36 mil.

Until a new HC is selected there is really no way to determine what they might do. We know Cal wants a 'splash' but that may mean a surprising coaching hire or outrageous trade or new color uniform. New coach may want QB this year or may want to build defense this year and offense and QB next. All we know for sure is there will be lot's of bitching and arguments

Gannon has already been interviewed and has withdrawn his name. If Gannon is to be hired as a new HC it is probably with another team.

I think they owe it to Caserio to hire the guy he recommends this hiring cycle.
Nick has his headphones back and is back in his seat in the coach's box. He owes Hannah. Culley doesn't count? The fiasco of McDaniels, Flores, McCown, and Gannon doesn't count? Texans going on 4 HCs in 4 years. In the words of the great philosopher DeShaun Watson, "Some things never change".

Why does everyone think Gannon will get involved with the Texans, again? He saw the dysfunction first hand. Need to find another young coach to fool.

C'mon. Acting like nothing has changed is a little disingenuous, don't you think?

The org has plenty of draft capitol, cap space, Easterby gone and like no restrictions on who "has" to be on the new staff. Plenty of reasons why this job should be viewed more favorably than last year.

Oh I absolutely bring in a vet. Gotta have one if you go that route.

New Unis? Check.
New Head Coach? Check.
New QB? Check.
New Team President? Yes. Cal gets new spiked hairdo in Battle Red. Begins to refer to himself as Kyle, Cal's long-lost twin who has been studying with the Dali Lama in Tibet. Cal has taken a permeant leave of absense to develop video games. Long live Kyle!

We could have used the #1 pick as bait to entice a good HC. How many top coaches would want to come here with our history? We have had 4 different coaches since the start of the 2020 season.
