Week 18 - Texans vs Colts: The Holding #1 pick all season until the end Bowl?

Texian

Cal thinks Texans will save face and gain respectability if they can win and avoid being the 1st pick. Cal's thought process, Young or Stroud, who cares, the fan base will be excited.

Texans are sure to blow this one- as in win a meaningless game and cost ourselves the #1 pick where we can pick any QB or trade for maximum return if Caserio’s little heart so desires. I have no doubt we will get it done because we can’t do anything right. Doofus Cal will be seen clapping away as we pull off the W. “We won, weeeeeee”.

Being #2 means a lot easier to trade down if that's what NC wants to do. Any QB he wants will be there if that's what he wants to do... unless someone pays Chicago a ridiculous amount to jump the Texans
Doesn't it boil down to how strong the interest in Young or Stroud might be ?
Clearly if we end up with the #2 overall instead of the One, we will very likely be Chicago's biggest potential trading partner ?

It’s been whackamo around here coming up on two years anniversary, when Watson checked out, so what can anyone expect for those who’ve lived through it?

Last game of season, going into final weekend and only 19 replies, including this one?

We’re just looking for return to normalcy, and respectability. None of us still know what’s going to happen, but my guess is this Lovie Smith Texans roster will spank the Colts, in their own building. Lovie will be back along with staff for next season and Caserio will draft a franchise QB.

If Lovie and company are back next season #1 overall wont matter.

Which is why I can't even pretend to be even mildly enthusiastic about a #1.

Even if we had the #1-10 in the first round with L9vie and no cleaning.

Meh. Even IF we had a solid team the cpaching is suspect IMO so we would simply relive Kubiak era where at best we achieve competent mediocrity.

Which is a clear improvement from where we are... but it is no longer the bar I want this team to strive for

If Lovie and staff is back next season these draft picks will matter. You need more talent correct? Having more talent does strengthen your possibilities of success correct? Wasn’t the goal for this past season was to lose? Therefore we should grade Lovie and staff on the curve system correct?

If Texans win, probability becomes Texans have the 2nd overall pick. Caserio could trade that pick for extra pick(s) and still draft a franchise QB. I’m all for moving on, clean house myself, just be real surprised/impressed if Cal did it now, so think he gives them all one more year (no cost to him) to bounce back into this conference championship race 2023. It’s not like the bar set so high it’s out of the question. So yeah, Lovie has a lot to play for, more than Saturday.

Lovie isn’t taking this team anywhere. He’s had 5 winning seasons in 17 years he’s been a HC, none in the last 8 years.

Sure, put 5 Pro Bowlers on each side of the ball and he might win you 6, 7, 9 games, but he’s not getting you over the hump.

Because IMO Id rather move on to anyone else because I don't believe Lovie is the one.

Id MUCH rather someone new come in and pick who they want rather than give Lovie another season of meh knowing he is not the long term answer.

Do I know who is? No.

I'm just convinced it's not him. So why would I want to see "improvement" when I know the glass ceiling with Lovie and company is mediocrity? To spend more Texan years of wasting talent?

Yes, the picks will HELP Lovie look better, but if our goal is to build a strong team for the future.... what does that matter if Lovie isnt the one?

Got to get the man some talent to see if he could get the job done. Everyone on here is on record stating they don’t have the talent. The man has been to the super bowl. The mission was to tank so how can anyone formulate a true evaluation of this coaching staff. We were in quite of few games this season. But again the mission was to lose and that’s what they done.

The man lost me when he played for the tie.

IF he didn't have the guts to take the risk and play for the win with low expectations.

What are the chances he is bold when the expectations are higher?

Kubiak has been to the superbowl........ although I do believe him to be the best coach in our history.... aside from making a sucky team competently mediocre (which as I said is an improvement... I just don't want that to be our ceiling) he didn't get us there either.

If the mission was to lose.... is that truly a trait you desire in leadership? To roll over?

I want someone that goes down swinging regardless of talent level. Not someone in the corner pouting like Eeyore.

What if the #1 is a bust? Then what? Keep Lovie around indefinitely until the #1 pays off endlessly tanking until we make the Browns history look like the Patriots legacy?

I want talent absolutely. I want new coaching more.

It would be so Texans to hold the #1 draft pick since week 9, lose it on the last game, then trade up to get #1.
Actually it wouldn't be that big of deal, shouldn't take too much capital to move up to ONE from TWO.
The Texans need to come out of this Draft with a potential star, I dunno say a QB who maybe won the Heisman or something,
could potentially generate some interest so badly needed for the organization.

How? By letting Lovie and his assistants get involved with the draft, again? By signing big $$$ FAs that may fit his system, but not the next regime's? I know the preface is "if he’s here next season". But the examples I gave show how utterly ridiculous it would be to bring Smith & Co. back. Clean. House.

And just how much do you think he’s going to succeed? Lovie is waaaay too conservative. We saw that in the very 1st game. He didn’t even give the team a chance to win, he swallowed the tie. He’s not adaptive to the game or his players rolling out that damn Tampa 2 every week, drafting a man cover corner and making him play it, dude is just too set in his ways, not to mention the fact that he hasn’t won in a very long time.

He’s not the future. I’d really like to start getting this “rebuild” going in a direction that isn’t scraping the bottom of the ocean floor or even hovering a few feet above it. The losing is getting old. At least when the Astros were doing it they were stocking up talent. What freaking talent does the Texans have? As good as we think Pierce was, he didn’t come close to the rookie season Steve Slaton had. Then we saw how far Slaton fell quickly after. Pierce couldn’t even finish year one so we really don’t know anything.

Tired of the losing with no end in sight. And that includes Caserio. I know it won’t but a TOTAL clean house needs to happen, GM, coaches, all of it. When is the last time the Texans did that? When they clean house they usually leave something behind before ultimately taking that out. They need to just do it already and quit being a shit organization.

It would be even less of a big deal with a loss Sunday and they don’t have to give up anything.

We’re all tired of losing but I remember you said they were tanking these past two seasons. So let’s see if he can help turn this ship around. Put some talent on here with an elite quarterback and let’s see what it do. He’s been in a super bowl right and with a below average quarterback.
Do you know how bad it would look if they fired two minority coaches in a row. They will say they used them to take the fall.

They’re not going to do that because it would look even worse firing another minority head coach. Especially when everybody knows they did not set either of them up for success.

The tanking “strategy” doesn’t do any good if you don’t make the right picks. You can’t be drafting someone 3rd overall with a **** ton of medical red flags or giving away 3 picks to move up and draft another medical red flag. That’s not how you do this.

Do you know how bad it would look if they fired two minority coaches in a row.
Do you know how bad it looks winning 4, 4, and 2 or maybe 3 games in consecutive seasons? The media is going to do what the media does. **** em. They’re not invested in this team, we are. Look what the media has done with the Astros. **** em. Two rings.

Brother it still would look even worse firing two minority head coaches. They set them up to be the fall guy. That crap didn’t set well with the league when Flores field his complaint and sued the Dolphins for tanking then firing him. That’s what I’m talking about

The optics are bad. But so is the look of an empty stadium. Bright new shiny Head Coach along with a bright new shiny QB. They will look great on the new season tickets.
Empty stadium because of the Watson situation. They lost a lot of fans because of the way they handled him. Jokers still believe they set him up because he demanded a trade. So imagine firing another minority head coach. They might as well sell the team if they do that.

Not going to happen Captain
You're probably right.... but when we are riding the "Next year is Lovies year" train to another season of failure for the 8th season in a row..... the fan base will wish we had cleaned house now rather than a #1 pick that may... or may not be a bust for 2023.

I for one won't be one believing that one more season under Lovie is all we need. I've seen far too much of a pattern for reveling in mediocrity to want to go one more round of "Rebuilding to mediocrity." as the promised land.

Speedy

Former Yeller Dweller
Right in a sense. But the Watson situation is a main component to why fans are not in the building as well.
Watson hasn't been in the building for 2 years. I had been to every game for 18 years. When they don't win, the stadium is empty. Unless opposing fans are packing in. I recall a Christmas Day game with Pittsburgh where it was 85% Steeler fans. If only Cal was just half as embarrased by that as I was.

The Watson stuff may play a part but that's just a small part in a long line of stuff they've screwed up. He isn't THE reason the stadium is empty. It's becasue the team sucks and no one trusts the owner or anyone down the line. And frankly they have no reason to as they've been about as incompetent as it gets.

The fan base been wishing they would clean house dating back to when they fired Kubiak and kept Rick Smith. Rinse and repeat right. That front office will never learn. Now they’re really in a F’d up predicament.
