After year 1, grade 2022 draft

Thorn

Dirty Old Man
We've had a year, it's time and I'm tired of the other conversations anyway.

Round 1: No. 3 – Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU
Round 1. No. 15 (from PHI via MIA) – Kenyon Green, G, Texas A&M
Round 2: No. 37 – Jalen Pitre, S, Baylor
Round 2: No. 44 (from CLE) – John Metchie III, WR, Alabama
Round 3: No. 75 (from DEN) – Christian Harris, LB, Alabama
Round 4: No. 107 (from DET via CLE) – Dameon Pierce, RB, Florida
Round 5: No. 150 (from CHI) – Thomas Booker, DT, Stanford
Round 5: No. 170 (from NE via TB) – Teagan Quitoriano, TE, Oregon State
Round 6: No. 205 (from GB) – Austin Deculus, OT, LSU

Giant A+ excellent picks for Pitre and Pierce
Good value picks for Harris, Booker
Gigantic miss on Stingley
Incomplete on Metchie
meh on Quitoriano and Deculus

After one year, I give Caserio's first real draft a B.

I gave it a C+ immediately after it happened based solely on the execution of the draft and some of the red flags I thought were ignored, particularly at the top of the draft.

There’s still some potential there that I think could pan out, even with Stingley, and we haven’t even seen Metchie yet, but for now I’m sticking with C+.

FWIW I gave the 2021 draft a D. That still looks about right.

BUENO!
Classic Texans draft if you ask me.

Miss on the top 5 pick? Check!
Hit on a later pick that outshines him? Check!
Manage to locate a player with a serious illness? Check!
Unspectacular lineman in there somewhere? Check!
Late running back that shines bright? Check!

It’s like a broken record and like most Texans drafts we’ll be wondering about Stingley, Metchie, and lamenting seeing Pierce be run into the ground before the rest of the team is ready to even stand much less walk.

I think one of the most important things for the offense this off season is to get another RB. A real one, not Pukehead. It's even more imperative they do this if Lovie is returning.

I can't say. I think Brevin Jordan could be a star in KC, SF, Buffalo, anywhere you've got an innovative offensive mind.

On paper, a lot of talent from both of Caserio's drafts. I don't think their lack of production is because they're not talented, or they're not smart enough, or that they're uncoachable...

I just hope they're not ruined by low expectations

Yeah, somewhere along the line Casino is going to have to find us a good HC.

If Stingley, Green, and Metchie make huge strides next season, it can be an A. Got good returns from Pierce, Harris, and Pitre. Booker was decent depth. Q. and Deculus haven't shown much. Hinnish was also a good depth pick up as an UDFA. Can't go higher than B- due to the questions around the top three picks.

Gotta give them time. The 2 most talented guys got hurt.

Petrie/Harris/Pierce were great picks

Booker/Hinish are depth pieces on a good team.

Q and Deculus get an I.

If Stingley/Green/Metchie comeback and play to their abilities this will have been a really good draft. I think posters are disillusioned because Sauce was really good and Stingley looked like a solid rookie before he got hurt. But wasn't the star level player Sauce is.

If we had Sauce and Pitre our secondary would have been awesome. Plus I didn’t know we had a chance to pick Pickett either.

Overall a grade of C.

Lovie and Pep need to be shown the door do they can go back to the XFL where they belong. Year 1 for the rooks that played looks like a C. Could have been a B- but Green brought the grade down. I’m really excited to see what Metchie can do in the slot once he’s back.

I'm still very frustrated with Casserio's first round performance, both picks !
I dunno how is it he does so well with his midrounders like Pitre & Pierce but makes such questionable selections with what should be slam dunks, which is certainly what the 3rd overall followed by the other first round pick in the mid teens should be.
So both of those first rounders had serious injuries which IMO effectively prevents a valid appraisal of their rookie seasons, but I'll give the rest of Casserio's Draft a strong B or maybe even an A.

As you can see with the Jets defense, Sauce as good as was regarded, that defense collapsed down the stretch So him being here wouldn't have made that big of an impact. The Texans as composed right now are ranked 13th against the pass....So they weren't terrible to begin with.

I had first round grades from 2022 Draft Class into the 2nd rd. Needless to say was a deep class far as 6th rd. That anspect alone really hurts my view of this Texans draft grade even if they added talent, should have been way more. Grading on a scale of 1-10. 10 being number of picks they originally had. +1 for a hit -1 for a miss. Taking one season into consideration, subject to change (certainly hope to hell it does) but from someone who follows the draft, this is my early grade.

5 out of 10

-1
I wouldn’t have been tempted by Stingley until the 13th pick (based off medical red flags) give him more time to rehab.
- 1/2
Greene I didn’t realize was dealing with medical at the time, but still first round grade (20’s) same as Pitre.
+1/2
Dynamite safety class and I wanted one of three (Daxton Hill #30, Jalen Pitre #37,
Jaquan Brisker #48). Really any order to me would have been fine.
-1
Hated using just added draft capital to move up for another red flag (coming off acl) prospect John Metchie III. In a three for one deal, Caserio gave up the Texans 3rd #68 and both 4ths #108 & #124.
-1/2
Once again going after injured Alabama player in LB Christian Harris #75. Getting slight discount in exchange for injury, just not in my stick but clearly it was for Nick. Well coached player with twitch and explosive traits, depends on health moving forward playing physical position.
+1
Damion Pierce with 2nd pick of the 4th rd. #107 (remember he traded away #108 back to Cleveland). I wasn’t super high or super low on Pierce. Not a lot of tape or reps but he was impressive during Senior Bowl week in practice and flashed his explosive slashing style. Don’t know if this was blind luck or scouting staff had this prospect nailed down but giving them benefit of doubt.
-1
Thomas Booker, #150 DT had 5th/6th rd grade so I’m dinging Caserio for taking him a bit early with better talent still on the board. Late DT’s generally take 2-3 years of development so no big deal yet #150 7th pick of 5th rd could have been better (#151 Tyler Allgeier RB would have been terrific next to Pierce and then #153 Tariq Woolen CB could have taken the sting out of Stingley).
-1
6th around traded #183 & 7th #246 to go up and get TE Teagan Quitoriano w/#170 end of 5th rd. Plenty here know Jamaree Salyer was still on the board until the Chargers selected him #195. Starting rookie LT replacing the injured 2nd team LT pro bowl rookie last year Rashawn Slater.
-1
With only one 6th rounder left selected Austin DeCulus #205 priority free agent RT only development prospect. I’m not making this **** up. The low odds in the mid-to-late rounds also explain Caserio’s history of aggressively trading day-three picks because he obviously doesn’t know how to evaluate talent when he does.
-1/2
Texans traded other 6th rd pick for Blake Cashman who was released during season.

As you know I would have gone in a totally different direction.

In the 1st I would have taken the 2 biggest baddest guys in the draft. Neal/Davis

In the 2nd I had a 1st rd grade on Sam Williams.

If Caserio was going to trade up for a WR Pickens would have been my guy.

But if Caserio stayed put in the 3rd and drafted Salyer (who I had as a top 50 guy) and Woolen who I had in the 3rd.

Liked the Harris pick.

I liked the Pierce pick.

Didn't like the Booker pick. The Texans have a close relationship with Shaw so I can see why the pick was made.

Didn't know much about Q

Considered Deculus a good late rd flier.

Overall I give the draft a B- with a chance to be more. But once again the Texans medical staff let them down.

There's a lot of luck involved when it comes to injuries.
Not when you have data beforehand prior to making selections. Granted, Metchie you can't see that coming...BUT he was already an injury risk and you waste picks to get him. He would have just had a more typical football injury. You can see it coming from 100 miles away. Everyone but Nick apparently.

The wasted picks trading up have to be figured into all of this, plus you drafted guys...repeatedly with injury history. This is not an unpredictable outcome. Grades here are on a curve vs. spot selected and expectations. Only one single draftee that played regularly had a clean 2022 injury-wise, and that was Pitre. And y'all think that was a good draft?

Stingley: C-
Green: D
Pitre: A-
Metchie: INC
Harris: B-
Pierce: A-
Booker: D+
Quitoriano: C+
Deculus: C

Overall Grade: C-

Wasted a 5th rd pick on Anthony Miller who was starting at the time the trade was made with the Bears and a bunch of late rd pick swaps. These type moves aren't going to make or break the rebuild.

Tell us how you can predict injuries? I get the Stingley pick and didn't like the pick for injury reasons.

The rest you would have to be Miss Cleo to know they were going to get hurt.

Really? Well maybe Miss Cleo saw that Green was injured, Metchie had an ACL, Harris was injured, etc. In fact, maybe Miss Cleo ought to be GM. Nick is failing bigly. Dude needs a pink slip and a one-way ticket to Splittsville with Lovie and Pep.

Pretty much all players that play at the collegiate level have some level of injury history. CnD was good with the Green pick. I didn't like the Metchie/Stingley picks after reading CnD's prognosis. However Metchie should be fine after having so much time to recover.

Caserio isn't a doctor he relies on the Texans medical staff to make an informed decision.

Once again the Texans medical staff has failed. This has been going on for 2 decades and counting. We're you you this upset when Casserly or RS were drafting injured players? Dr. Lowe should have been fired yrs ago.

In my opinion with the holes on the roster and the depth of the draft, I thought they should've kept all their picks. I mean Metchie was drafted before a whole slew of wrs and rbs. Not to mention what he gave up to get him. The 108 and 124 had high quality, productive players.

And next year we have FOUR picks in the sixth round. I guarantee you we won't be picking four times in the sixth round, if we actually have any six round picks left.

I wonder how many 6th round draft picks actually work out vs Nick’s trading away 6th round picks for a players and having X number work out?

There has to be a ratio for comparison somewhere that Caserio is using to validate his actions.

Are you asking me to validate Nick Casario pissing away draft picks? Have you ever done research on your own? I mean, I could just make stuff up and you wouldn't know the difference.

I'm going to do one year (2022) because it should be enough to make a point.

2022 NFL Draft 6th round:

42 draft picks. 15 were activated for 10+ games (thus far). 7 were activated between 5-9 games. 8 were activated for 1-4 games. 12 did not play in an NFL game in 2022.

Here's the main difference. The players Caserio have traded for had one year left on their contracts. A rookie will have 4 years. All at rookie level salaries. This is the first time Caserio has traded a draft pick for a player that has played a full season with the team (15 of 16 games). Caserio's 2 6th round draft picks (Roy Lopez and Austin Deculus) both made the team with Deculus activated for 4 games and Lopez activated for 32 of his career 32 NFL games.

Not only does Caserio not check a league wide ratio, but he also fails to check his own results.

To answer your questions:

1. Honest question. I just don’t know. If he traded 3 away to get one good player but then if 6th rounders have a 33% success rate well I would go with drafting because the money makes more sense. But if they only have a 10% chance of working out then there is some math that goes into the his decision making. He may have been looking for known results vs the unknown.

2. I don’t do my own research. I ask others like I ask the Google bar for stuff. If it’s what I am looking for then I know it worked.

3. You are pretty reputable when you agree with me.

I get your point.

Tried to step away, following two other teams but all it does is make me more mad @ this organizations Draft and roster construction. There are some phenomenally smart front offices and once they gain advantage they usually don't relinquish fruit of labor.
