Texans Claim WR Amari Rodgers

For the past decade, through 2021, Seattle's starting QB was the same size as Young and they went to two SB's, winning one. Their offense should be an ideal fit for Young. Moving from 3 to 1 is doable

But the Texans drafting Young at 1.1 would be a "splash".
Hopefully Young will be so enticing several teams will go after him as some did Watson. If a trade Is offered I hope it is so overwhelming we do not have to wonder if car stereo made a good negotiation. Even if Houston does not select Bryce young, I do not see them going forward with just Davis Mills.

Comparing baseball to football is a fool’s errand. Show me the farm system where the Texans can start stockpiling young talent. That’s just one of a ton of differences. Career length is another. Season length. When draftees are available. I could go on but your smart enough to get the idea.

You like to point out history so let’s look at history. Show me an NFL team that was obviously tanking for 3 entire seasons with the idea that some white knight QB with perfect teeth and a gleaming smile and a S on his cape would eventually be there to save the franchise for a decade… if only they tank for multiple seasons because the guy they covet isn’t even eligible for two years and is some freckle faced freshman. I have seen some teams tank over maybe the last 1/4 of a season or the last game or two.

Way too much money at stake, not to mention pride, ego, competitive spirit etc. for any owner to go along with a hair-brained scheme like that. Any owner that does that needs to fire himself along with the GM that suggested it.
It's ironic. But two of Steel's favorite QBs are Brady and Garapollo. Neither one was drafted in the first round or even considered first round talents. With the historical bust to success rate of QBs, the idea of simply waiting for that mythical, championship, franchise QB is also a fool's errand.

I don’t trust Caserio’s QB instincts any more than @steelbtexan ‘s. If Nick stays, I hope they take Anderson and let the next regime select the QB.
So the short story is, Caserio has shown no expertise in selecting QBs. But with a franchise defining pick, he’s to be entrusted? I’m sorry but this is a disaster waiting to happen.

Clean house.
Vs. who? You guys are searching certainties in an uncertain process and profession. Ditka won a SB in large part b/c of the contributions of an extraordinary RB. 15 years later he traded an entire draft for a thought to be once in a lifetime back in an effort to try fo duplicate what he did in the 80’s with the bears…did his previous “expertise” help or hinder him in that situation as the NO HC?

Using predraft info only, which had longer odds being a longtime NFL starting QB, Brady or Bryce Young?

Good question. Thinking about it. How about Alex Smith, Ryan Leaf, Trent Dilfer, Blaine Gabbert or Brady? All I know is QB purgatory sucks and the draft is a crapshoot. There are so many variables that goes into a successful NFL QB. Coaching and the complementary pieces around that QB are just as important.

May not be so bad…..since I view Hendon Hooker as the best QB in this draft. He had a late season injury which could make him available in RD2 or RD3. It’ll probably keep him off an NFL field in 2023, but make him fully ready for 2024.

What you call hair brained I call smart.

Build the team then get your QB. It keeps your championship window open longer and you have more talent in place for the new QB to be successful.

The Bengals for 1.

Yep, and if Mills is as bad as some say, the team would have another bad yr and could draft Williams or Maye to compete with Hooker in 2024.

Jimmy G was almost the last pick in the 2nd round. Did Belichick hood wink all of those other QB needy teams? Logically, if you look at the teams drafting immediately in front of the Texans in the 2nd round of the 2014 draft. You wouldn't expect them to draft a QB. I can see blasting Rick Smith if Jimmy G was available at 2-65 and he passed, but the guy was gone.

What was his draft profile? Wasn't the knock on Jimmy was small hands, poor pocket awareness, not tough, easily fazed by pressure. Isn't saying Smith should have moved up to draft JG, simply hindsight? No one expected the Patriots to draft another QB. Shoot, maybe RS was going to pick Jimmy G and BOB slipped and let his Patriots buddies know they were interested. See how easy it is to place irrational blame?
  • 2-56: Broncos. Had Peyton Manning and young Brock.
  • 2-57: 49ers. I guess Harbaugh was sticking with Kaepernick and wanted a RB
  • 2-58: Saints. Drew Brees
  • 2-60: Panthers. Cam Newton just led them to SB. Did not need a QB
  • 2-61: Jaguars. Drafted Blake Bortles at 1-1 and didn't need another QB.
  • 2-62: Patriots. Had Brady and Mallet was only in his 2nd year
  • 2-63: Dolphins. Tannehill just threw for 4000 yards. Didn't need a QB
  • 2-64: Seahawks: With Wilson in his prime, didn't need a QB
  • 2-65: Texans: Fiedorowicz

All of this would be hindsight except I wanted RS to draft Jimmy G ay 2-33 after drafting Clownery 1-1. If you want a guy go and get him. Same thing happened with the Seahawks jumping RS to draft Lockett. RS gets jumped and settles for Strong.

In this last draft I'm glad Caserio traded up to get his guys. Metchie/Harris

When have the Texans ever drafted who you wanted or at the pick you wanted? Even when Caserio traded up, he didn't pick the guys you would have.

True, that's why the Texans are where they're at today and really since their inception. I was hoping this would change with Caserio. I liked Caserio's last draft though. I just wish he was allowed to pick guys like Pickens and Sam Williams.

I sure do hope Metchie makes a full recovery and lives up to that draft slot. Would be a much needed success story in Houston football.

Why aren’t you a NFL GM or scout? Since you know how to build a team

Trade Cooks, draft TCU WR, Quentin Johnston (RD1) and pair him with Metchie and Collins. Johnston, Collins, and Metchie would make a hail-of-a trio. It would be amazing to have (2) options to take the top off defenses.

If Cal makes Caserio pick Young then I hope Johnston is the other 1st rd pick. Then give him the best TE in the draft at 2-32. Then the 2 best IOL in rd 3.

I'm really hoping Carter and Verse are the 1st rd picks and after that Caserio goes all offense.

Johnston could be 1 but who is the other you see as taking the top off defenses?
Metchie 4.45-40 would be a mismatch waiting to happen from the slot. Johnston is a solid 4.4-40 who may pop a legit 4.38-40 at the Combine. Collins is the possession receiver, but is a 4.42-40 receiver.

Just a side note, Wilson and Young are similar height. As for weight, Wilson is bigger and he has a thick lower body. I would rather have a few other QBs before considering him.
Wilson's reported existing weight is 215 lbs, but at his combine, he weighed in at 205. Young is listed as 194 lbs, but digging a little deeper on the Alabama site, you find him listed as 194 lbs as a freshman, sophomore and junior, which is a bit strange. Like with his height, we'll have to wait for the combine for his current weight.

Wilson is playing around 220. He has a heavier frame. So, by nature he is going to be heavier than a guy with a small frame. But, I still don't want him. This time last year nobody knew who he was. They did however know of guys like CJ Stroud who no question has the height and weight to hold up in the NFL. He also has a stronger arm and has shown he know what to do with it. Watching a few video with him doing things like throwing a perfect strike about 25yrds over 3 DBs and into his WRs, who is running, hands. Hit him in stride. Watching CJ do stuff like that over and over. The extra height and arm strength is clear. And he is doing it in every game. Putting a pass where a WR catches it or nobody. Not saying that he is 100% who I want. I think Mills would be good/better with a better coach.

You kind of jumped around here, but you are wrong in saying Young was unknown at this time last year. He had a phenomenal 2021 season and won the Heisman.

You can't compare the 2022 Wilson with Young. You have to go back and look at the 2011 Wilson. But it does appear Wilson may be a bit stouter, but not by much.

Here is a link to the early Wilson : https://www.pinterest.com/pin/can-russell-wilson-overcome-his-limited-height-httpmynwmejsdtlh--125397170844950545/

And a link to Young : https://www.pinterest.com/pin/bryce-young-of-the-alabama-crimson-tide-looks-to-pass-against-the--345721708904305781/

There's not a whole lot of difference between the two. Give Young a few years in an NFL training room.

As for Young vs Stroud, that's a matter of personal preference. They have both had outstanding college careers and scouts like what both players have in their game.

Wikipedia has him listed at 6’, Wilson at 5’11 Vick at 6’ and Drew Brees at 6’. So I’ve asked a few people already if Wikipedia was right about Wilson, Vick and Brees why wouldn’t they be right about Young?

Wilson, Vick and Brees all should have official measurements taken and recorded at the combine. Young has never been "officially" measured. I visited the Alabama website and found Young was consistently listed at 6' and 194 lbs for his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. This is abnormal but is undoubtedly where the Wikipedia iinformation is from. The combine will clear this up.

Also, with Wikipedia, there is inconsistency. At the top under personal information, Brees is listed as 6'0", but further down under professional career, the official combine measurement is 6'0 1/4". Vick is 6' and 6'. But again, Russell Wilson is listed as 5'11", but has his official combine measurement listed as 5'10 5/8".

Wiki info is only as good as the info put into it. None of it is official and anyone can input data with sources. Check the sources to see where the info actually comes from. A quick google search did lead to this info
According to Alabama’s roster, Young is 6-feet tall. He may appear short relative to his offensive line, but that’s easy to do with the kinds of athletes the Crimson Tide have up front.

Young has grown a bit while with the Crimson Tide, which isn’t uncommon. According to his recruiting profile on 247Sports, Young measured in at 5-foot-11 and 183 pounds when he was a five-star recruit coming out of high school.

At the official combine it had Wilson list at 5’11, Drew 6’1 and Vick 6. Wikipedia matched up with all but one of them.

Football players are grown in vats to exact measurements. Sometimes the ingredients get mixed up though, the Texans always seem to get those.
JJ Watt's vat was stored underneath another players and the one above his leaked. That guy didn't make it but JJ got a double-dose of the magic formula.
