Which QB should the Texans consider signing/trading for?

Did anyone thinl Mahomes would be Mahomes when he was drafted? I didn't see anyone say , I dodn't see a Mahomes in this draft class he year after he was drafted.. If I go pull receipts, nevermind.
When drafted Tom Brady had more questions than does Stroud or Young. We forget that due to his career.

Go pull them

Corrosion and me.

We both liked him more than any QB in that class.

I missed on Allen.

You wanted Kelly in this mock, even going so far as to say that he's the most talented QB in that draft.

Corrosion had Mahomes as the 4th QB taken in the draft.

If he is not a primo pick, I'm not drafting him in the first round. I don't think there is a primo QB in this draft, so I don't want to draft a QB in the 1st round. I don't think any of these QB's are as good as Mahomes or WD-40 were when they were drafted, and they fell to the #10 and #12 picks. If Bryce was the size of WD-40, I would consider him in the top 15. He's not, so I wouldn't. Bryce doesn't have the arm talent of either of those guys, so again I wouldn't take him in the top 15. If he was bigger, he might have a stronger arm, but he's small, and doesn't, so no.
Yeah I think Bryce is a smaller but more mobile Teddy Bridgewater so no for me too.

I really wanted Mahomes in our draft, but was tickled when we got DW. Never thought that he would fall to us. I was bumbed when KC took Mahomes, but perked right up when we took DW. How I wish that were reversed.
If I remember correctly, that QB draft class had most everybody in flux.
There was no concensus.

Toward draft day, I was still unsured.

I think I had Trubisky and Mahomes at the top.
Trubisky had great tapes, but only for one season.
The opponents were pretty good, but not great.

I thought Mahomes had the most potential, but there were a couple of games where the opponents mostly rushed 3 and covered with 8 and Mahomes was having some difficulties.
This is where it's hard to project these QBs to the next level.

That pre-combine mock he missed on everyone!

@Corrosion changed this before the draft

You should really watch tape of these guys , Trust your own eyes .... and take what you hear with a grain of salt.

I had Kizer as my #1 coming into the season .... He's now fallen like a rock.

1) Mahomes
2) Trubisky
3) Peterman
4) Watson
5) Beathard
6) Kizer
7) Webb

My biggest knock on both Young and Stroud…..they’ve never faced the adversity of playing for a team in a complete rebuild mode with little to no talent on the roster. Yeah….and they’ll be taking that test on at the NFL level.

No offense but Bryce Young is significantly more talented than Bridgewater. The only knock on Young is size. If he were 6’2” 220 he’d be an absolute no brainer at 1-1 for any team that needs a QB
I know he is a little more talented but Bridgewater would have been #1 QB in his draft if he was 6'2" and 220.
It will be interesting to see the official measurements at the combine - I have seen some quote him as short as 5'10"

But I've seen comments on the web that this is one of the positives for Young. Alabama does not have the talent this year they have had in the past (obviously not rebuild talentless) and with comments that he has had to play through adversity; and still produced. You can see that his stats are down this season from last year, though still good. So it is being counted as a positive how well he has handled this season with less talent than he had last year.

A lot of us wanted either Mahomas or Watson at that time. KC leaped frogged us and the rest is history.
Some of us didn't want Derrick.

History has proven us to be correct. Watch Derrick continue to suck in Cleveland. He's gonna end up getting multiple HC's fired. But hey, he got paid.

Neither you or Corrosion thought that Mahomes (or Watson) ahould be drafted in the first round, much less at #10
You might want to go back and check out some of those mocks.

In some of them I had him in the 1st rd. I like to play around with the mocks so I didn't put him in the 1st rd in all of the mocks. In one mock I put another player ( can't remember who) in the 1st and Peterman in the 2nd. But as the draft drew near I definitely wanted Mahomes. In fact I said as much during the actual draft thread that RS should have given up the extra 3rd for Mahomes..

I certainly don't see a Mahomes in this draft. In 2024 I think Williams and Maye have Mahomes type talent.

A down year talent wise for Alabama is 5 star recruits starting their 1st year or at some point in their 1st year......not a Rice down year.

I went back last night and read through those threads. Right before the draft early April) the narrative changed by most to Mahomes and Watson would go in the first but only because of qb hungry teams. Most thought Watson would go top half of the draft and Mahomes would slide to the Texans at 25. Most everyone believed that OB wanted and Texans would draft Mahomes.

Yep, but once again RS got jumped in the draft just like he did with Jimmy G and the rest is Texans QB history. Corrosion and I've talked about this (He knows RS personally) he believes RS didn't value the QB position properly.

Not drafting a QB and having a good team does provide job security because you can always say, we're just a QB away. Notice how after RS jumped out on the QB limb he parted ways with the Texans the next season, never to be heard from in NFL circles again.

Yes, Corrosion/Me wanted Mahomes

Like he could’ve prevented that lol . Off the chains

Is there a primo pick at 1.1? I don't like any of them at that pic and was hoping for at least one trade down Involving that pic. Thanksgiving when I question a buddy he hesitated for a while and finally said Myles Murphy with a? I said that would be my Guy also but Reluctantly.
I like Myles Murphy and Tyree Wilson. My first pick would be Jalen Carter though. I'd use the 2nd pick on either Murphy or Wilson. Then I'd try to get one of the top Centers (Stromberg or Schmitz). After that, I'd find the best available RG or the best available RT that can also play RG. Then use the rest of the picks to fill holes (SS, LB, WR, RB). I don't see it happening, but if Richardson falls to the 3rd, he's my QB pick. By getting him in the 3rd, there would be no worries about sitting him for a couple seasons to get used to the NFL, and learn. If not Richardson, If Duggan falls to the 4th or 5th rounds, I'd take him and try to develop him. I like Duggans fire.

That's where I was. I didn't like Trubisky, I thought he had the lowest ceiling, but I thought he was the most NFL ready. I thought Mahomes had the most potential, and the highest ceiling, but I thought he needed to sit for a season, which he did. I never was a big fan of WD-40 coming out.

I've seen reports that Young doesn't handle the blitz well, and also has problems recognizing zone coverages. Both of which he will see a lot of in the NFL. He does well against Man coverage, but that is also against college CB's that, with few exceptions, wouldn't be starters in the NFL.

IMO, Greg Cossel is one of the best in the business. Here’s his comments on Young

Ive watched 5 Alabama games this season, specifically to focus on Young. I hate Alabama, and I didn’t want to like Young, BUT the more I watched the more I liked him. As a pure QB, he’s phenomenal. He handles the blitz and zone coverage with no problem. Bamas offense is no where near as talented as it’s been in the past. Their WRs are young and made mistakes early in the season. Their OL is average at best. They have a good TE in Latu and a terrific RB in Gibbs but that’s it. Young just makes play after play. He’s also one of the toughest SOBs I’ve ever seen. He’s taken some huge hits and pops up every time. Additionally I’ve never seen him get on any of his teammates and he seems to have a positive encouraging attitude. As a side note, one of the big concerns I have with Caleb Williams is a lack of maturity. I’ve also watched multiple USC games this year, and he gets frustrated easily and seems to get on teammates and even the coaches.

Youngs size is scary but as a FB, he’s awesome. If they decide to go that route, I’d sign the best G and C in FA. Build the best OL possible to keep him clean.

We fully support the Texans claiming Baker Mayfield. the organization has shown an uncanny ability to take players off waivers and quickly get them up the speed in The Texans' highly creative offense so that the players can be evaluated based on in-game play.

Eno Benjamin and Amari Rodgers

So obviously I was being a smarta$$ when I posted this, but really the Rams who are awful this year could get Baker Mayfield to play quarterback after a single practice and have him lead a 98 yard game winning drive on a nationally televised game.

The Texans can't get a touch for a RB nor Slot Receiver in a month. Absolutely the most striking example of how slow moving and out of touch the Texans' coaching staff and organization is.

Alabama ain’t all that this year. Their offense is depleted. Young has done more with less than Stroud. Levis has arguably bigger upside than anyone in this draft but is more risky and could be a flameout. Young is the best, most polished QB in this draft and has more it factor than anyone in this draft. In the right system/coaching, he can be a top 10 QB in time. Maybe I will change my mind after reviewing more tape and listening to more expert commentary, but right now he is my guy at1.1 *** IF Lovie and Pep are shown the door.

I have to laugh at Corrosion putting Watson below Peterman. Lol. Look I love playing amateur scout once in a while, but let’s just say none of us should quit our day job.

I had the identical thought while watching Baker. The Texans are a pile of dog doo. They can’t even get Eno on the field after 3 weeks and he is a RB. Just unreal. The sloth should replace the bull on the Texans helmet.

That is not doing other peoples work. I post links all of the time. That way other fans can read what I’ve read.
And like I said I never heard anyone say Young has problems dealing with the blitz.

Thank you Otisbean.
I think Young deals with the blitz very well. The more I watch of Bryce Young the more I like. I consider one of his positive attributes is that he had Bill O'brien as his OC and thrived in a pro system. Check out this evaluation from J.T. O'Sullivan Bryce Young Analysis, Part 3 - YouTube

I too am concerned with his size - but that is his only negative. If it's that big a deal give him special cleats with 2" lifts built in, 😀

Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields, Kyler Murray, and Lamar Jackson are all guys that don't fit the "Prototypical QB" mold in some way or another that are having solid careers. If being a tall white guy with a big arm was the key to the success in the NFL, then Locker, Mallet, Bortles, Zach Wilson, Darnold, and a dozen other busts in recent years would be All-Pros.

yea now i'ts okay here of Young if they also fill in the offensive holes. But many QBs aka draft, trade. vet will look better if they have a great offense line, WRs, and RB.
