NFL Random Thought of the Day

Garoppolo I am sure is out for the season after suffering multipe left foot fractures in the 49ers Dolphins game. He actually went into the game with a Grade I left high ankle sprain. Not surprising that he suffered a complensatory injury.

I like the 49’ers chances better than the Texans of signing him.
I would taken him in a heartbeat. Beats seeing the 2 qb backups we have right now competing. They both remind me of Bucky Richardson and Cody Carlson before the Oilers drafted McNair. That season was rough.

John McClain on 610 said it was based on AJ Brown leaving but I flipped it to 790 and they thought there was something behind the scenes that fans may never know. Suggestion was that he had got into it with somebody.

Timing suggests it was AJ Brown related. Titans were without a passing game, Burks can't stay on the field and AJ had just out performed the entire Titans WR group

Reports are going around that Vrabel is expected to have significant power after Robinson's dismissal, despite the Titans naming Ryan Cowden the interim GM.

Wow! That is a short leash for the recent success they’ve had.
They've had recent success but he's made many questionable moves. The OL is struggling. Their WR group is weak and they have an aging QB and a young QB who looks worst than the Texans QBs. That Isaiah Wilson pick was a disaster. I don't think that guy played one game before getting cut. You can add Vic Beasley and Clowney to his list of FA busts.

McClain might be correct. Vrabel was on record that AJ Brown would be a Titan as long as he was HC. Look at his reaction when Brown was traded on draft day.

Garoppolo has had a non Lisfranc foot fracture. The team is saying that it will not require surgery and that he could possibly return by 8 weeks. There seems to be some misinformation in that there is more than one fracture. And although there is no anticipated surgery, I can hardly believe he is not out for season, especially with the other injuries he has been dealing with up to the time of his latest injury.

Vrabel's coaching success doesn't necessarily predict his future as having "GM power." It will indeed be interesting.

With Jon Robinson gone, Mike Vrabel holds the power in Tennessee
Posted by Mike Florio on December 7, 2022, 9:42 AM EST

Whenever a company fires a high-profile employee, there are usually two versions. The official position, and the truth.

In the case of the Titans firing G.M. Jon Robinson on the first Tuesday in December, the official position includes no effort to disconnect the decision from the trade that sent receiver A.J. Brown to Philadelphia — even as the move came two days after Brown helped his new team dismantle the team that traded him away.

Since then, there has been no reporting aimed at pushing back against the perception that Brown’s performance served as the catalyst for a longstanding power struggle/philosophical divide between Robinson and coach Mike Vrabel, who made his displeasure with the trade clear through his body language after it happened. So, yes, perception and reality may be one in the same. Owner Amy Adams Strunk, after an extended period of presiding over periodic squabbling by Robinson and Vrabel, decided that Vrabel was right all along — and that Robinson needed to go.

For the 31 teams ultimately controlled by one person, change like that can come at any time. On any given day, the owner can roll out of bed and decide to make a big change. For better or worse.
Whether it’s better or worse for the Titans remains to be seen. For as good as the Titans have been, maybe the friction between Robinson and Vrabel had been holding them back. Maybe, if Vrabel didn’t also have to navigate internal disagreements and dysfunction, the team would have achieved even more over the past few years.

There were signs of disagreement well before the Titans decided to trade Brown for a first-round pick that became his replacement. When the Titans traded a 2022 second-round pick and a 2023 fourth-round pick for receiver Julio Jones and a 2023 sixth-round pick in June 2021, G.M. Jon Robinson was the one who did the press conference and the media appearances. Vrabel didn’t say a word.

And that said plenty. Vrabel likely didn’t want Jones. To no surprise, Jones didn’t do much for the Titans before Tennessee released him after one season.

What other personnel decisions were made over the objection of Vrabel? Was the drafting of quarterback Malik Willis something Vrabel didn’t want, given its potential impact on incumbent starter Ryan Tannehill? Did Vrabel want to make a competitive offer to running back D'Onta Foreman, who played very well last year after Derrick Henry suffered an injury?

None of that really matters at this point. What matters is that Vrabel necessarily emerges as the guy who’s in charge of the football operations, as a practical matter. He has earned it through his coaching. He has likely cemented it through his told-you-so views on players like A.J. Brown and Julio Jones coming to fruition.

And so, like Vrabel’s friend and mentor Bill Belichick in New England, Vrabel now becomes the guy who ties it all together. Maybe that’s exactly what it will take to push the Titans over the top.

Isn't that going to be at least 7 to 8 weeks "non weight bearing" just for the bones to heal? Then another few weeks of rehab and strength and conditioning. He's not gonna be ready to play anymore games this year.

The Indianapolis Colts will play the Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. ET, the Baltimore Ravens will play the Cleveland Browns at 4:30 p.m. ET and the Miami Dolphinswill take on the Buffalo Bills in a high-stakes AFC East matchup at 8:15 p.m. ET. All three games will be played on NFL Network and over the airwaves in local markets. Fans outside of local markets without NFLN will have to make alternative plans to access the games.

For those of you that have cut the cord and want to watch football Week 15. These are Saturday games.

Depending on which metatarsals and where the metatarsals are fractured, the rehab can vary. The simplest and best case scenario nondisplaced metatarsal fractures may commonly be wrapped (sometimes splinted) while progressive weightbearing can commence as early as ~3-4 weeks. But even for these, it will take another 6-8 weeks to rehab the foot ankle to safely return to full football activity.

As I thought when I first saw Von Miller's Thanksgiving game, he has indeed torn his ACL. The team doctors, following examination and imaging declared that he had suffered a lateral meniscus tear and that the ACL was intact. He was going to come back and play with a brace (as I mentioned previously, that would never work anyway). After Von Miller did not seem to progress as expected, his doctors just recently decided to perform an exploratory scope to look at the meniscus, at which time they actually confirmed an ACL tear. This was the same knee in which he sustained an ACL in 2013. Most likely the repair stretched out leaving some looseness in the knee which set him up for this recent injury.

No criminal charges will be filed against Matt Araiza
Posted by Mike Florio on December 7, 2022, 4:27 PM EST

Former Bills punter Matt Araiza, who was cut by the team once accusations of rape came to light, will not face criminal charges for the October 2021 incident.

Via Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office decided not to pursue criminal charges against Araiza or the other San Diego State players involved in the alleged gang rape.

Said the D.A.: “Ultimately, prosecutors determined it is clear the evidence does not support the filing of criminal charges and there is no path to a potential criminal conviction. Prosecutors can only file charges when they ethically believe they can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”

That’s a high-minded way of saying prosecutors hate to lose. And they do. The bar for a conviction is very high. If they don’t believe they can surpass it, they exercise their discretion to not pursue criminal charges.

Attorney Dan Gilleon, who represents the alleged victim, seemed to expect the outcome.

I’m not surprised,” Gilleon said, via Tim Graham of TheAthletic.com. “The police rarely pay much attention to cases where the victim is intoxicated. Here, the police made it clear in January 2022 that they weren’t interested in the case. They made that clear by ghosting my client and keeping her in the dark. It was only the media attention that caused the police to commence a dog and pony show long enough for them to say they conducted a thorough investigation.”

The civil case against Araiza continues. The standard of proof in that setting is much, much lower. Basically, it’s a 51-49 evidentiary balance.

Because the incident allegedly happened before he was drafted by the Bills in April 2022, Araiza would be subject to no discipline, regardless of the outcome of the civil case. He could be signed by any other team at any time — and maybe a team will give him an opportunity now that the cloud of potential criminal liability has evaporated.
The question is whether the talent justifies the P.R. hit, especially in light of the position Araiza plays. And, yes, teams will definitely engage in that analysis when deciding whether to sign him

This is why women don’t come forward.

A minor who was purposely given alcohol is gang raped while passed out drunk, bruised around her neck, a laceration on her forehead, among other injuries and bleeding from her vagina gets a rape kit done the following day and reports the crime.

Nothing happens.

If Bosa tries to play, he is unlikely to make it through the game.........and likely to extend his injury.

Nick Bosa questionable with hamstring injury
Posted by Charean Williams on December 9, 2022, 5:41 PM EST

Nick Bosa (hamstring) did not practice all week and is questionable to play Sunday against the Buccaneers. Bosa would not talk about his game status Friday.
Coach Kyle Shanahan has referred to Bosa’s injury as hamstring “irritation.”

“It was more [bothering him] on Monday,” Shanahan said, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “Sometimes those guys are going in the games, and that does happen. . . . It was bothering him on Monday, and we got it looked into it, and it was legit.”

Shanahan said Bosa could play without practicing, but the 49ers will “definitely” take into account the quick turnaround into Week 15. They play the Seahawks in a key divisional game on Thursday Night Football.
Bosa’s three sacks in Sunday’s win over the Dolphins gives him an NFL-high 14.5 sacks this season, making him a favorite for defensive player of the year.

The 49ers ruled out quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (foot), defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway (pectoral) and defensive back Tarvarius Moore (knee). All three will miss some time with their injuries.

NFL accuses Bengals, Jessie Bates of faking injury, too
Posted by Mike Florio on December 10, 2022, 12:30 PM EST

The Saints and defensive end Cam Jordan weren’t the only ones to find out the hard way that the NFL means what it says when it says to not fake injuries.

The Bengals and safety Jessie Bates have been $50,000 fined, too, for Bates cartoonishly falling to the ground as the Bengals were trying to get substitutes into last Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, per multiple sources.

Here’s the video. Bates can see the Chiefs coming to the line of scrimmage as two Bengals defenders rush toward the line of scrimmage. And he collapses to the ground.

Per the memo that was sent eight days ago to all teams, the punishment includes a minimum fine of $50,000 for the player, a minimum fine of $350,000 for the team, a minimum fine of $100,000 for head coach Zac Taylor, and a $50,000 fine — if applicable — to the position coach. (It’s unclear whether any assistant coaches were fined in Bates’s case.)

Bates will have the right to appeal. And the best way to win on appeal could be to say he was told to do it.

DeVante Parker expresses frustration with failure of spotters to get him off field
Posted by Mike Florio on December 13, 2022, 5:22 PM EST

The system worked on Monday night. Sort of. Barely.

Patriots receiver Nelson Agholor alerted officials to the fact that teammate DeVante Parker was in no position to participate in the ensuing play after struggling to his feet and stumbling around. Parker had suffered a head injury on the prior play, but the league’s system for recognizing such situations and stopping the action to remove the player failed.

The NFL and NFL Players Association have launched a joint investigation. Parker has made his displeasure known.
Get on yalls fuckin job @NFL,” Parker said on Instagram, via Zack Cox of NESN. “Thankful my brother was aware of the situation.”

It’s the latest obvious failure of a process that includes multiple individuals who are supposed to be watching the action and calling for players in potential distress to be taken for an evaluation. In Week Four, spotters did not direct the Buccaneers to examine tight end Cameron Brate after he struck his head and struggled to get to his feet.

The league said the spotters concluded that Brate hit his shoulder, not his head. The league later conceded that Brate did indeed strike his head.

It doesn’t happen often, but once is too often. The league hires individuals for the specific purpose of seeing these things and intervening. When Parker says “get on yalls fuckin job,” the persons who are in the booth watching for these situations literally have one fuckin job.

The late John Madden, whose passion for protecting players against the impact of head trauma later in his life receives insufficient attention or appreciation given his many other accomplishments and contributions, would become livid in the aftermath of such incidents. After one noteworthy failure to get a potentially concussed player off the field, a source with knowledge of the reaction said this: “Coach Madden has a high degree of motivation on this topic, and he strongly believes that the professionals charged with safeguarding player health must be expected to do their jobs — and that if they can’t, someone else needs to be hired to do those jobs.”

Coach Madden’s words will always be 100-percent accurate. It’s one very simple and specific job, especially when the injury happens to the player who was tackled. Away from the ball, it can at times be a challenge. When it involves the player who has the ball, there should never be an excuse, or any attempt to make one.

So, hopefully, the end result of the current investigation won’t be, “The system worked because Agholor spoke up.” Hopefully, it will be, “The individuals responsible for recognizing the situation and taking action have been relieved of their duties.”
In an industry that has players fired almost every day in the best interest of a given team, the league must be ready to swiftly fire those who fail to demonstrate proper sensitivity to the best interest of the players.

The Falcons are playing games with the Mariota situation. Begs the question if he requires knee surgery, why has he not been on the injury reports for a knee injury? Mariota left the Falcons for the birth of his 1st baby. Why did the team play dumb with his absence?

NFL will no longer allow Raiders to use a holder on kickoffs to place football on top of tee
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 15, 2022, 4:23 AM EST

The Raiders’ strategy of using a holder on kickoffs to improve hang time is no longer allowed.

The NFL has now reversed course and won’t allow holders to hold the ball on top of the tee, according to FootballZebras.com.

Raiders coach Josh McDaniels explained that the Raiders got the bright idea to have the ball placed on the top of the tee, rather than inside the tee, which puts the ball slightly higher off the ground and gives kicker Daniel Carlson the opportunity to get under the ball better and get more hang time on his kickoffs. McDaniels said the Raiders first got clarification from the NFL that a holder is allowed to hold the ball on the top of the tee, and the league confirmed that it’s legal.

“They clarified a rule a couple weeks ago, that you’re permitted to hold the ball on the top of the tee now, so we’ve got a good kicker, you can add hang time to the kick, and I think you saw Daniel use that to our advantage,” McDaniels said. “That’s the rules. They clarified it a couple weeks ago. If it helps us gain some type of advantage, we’ll try to do that.”

But after the league’s officiating department discussed the matter with the competition committee, the determination has been made that footballs can only be placed in the tee and not on the tee. Holders can still be used on kickoffs when wind might blow the ball off the tee, but not for the purpose of gaining the hang time advantage the Raiders were seeking.
