Week 11: Commanding Bazoombas in Houston

You keep acquiring QBs until you find the one to lead your team. The question isn’t so much whether to roll with Mills another season or not. The question should be, “Is there a legitimate competition at QB?”

The Texans basically said there was an open competition everywhere except QB this past offseason. They should have added competition at the position. Whether that is drafting a guy like Zappe or signing a FA with a realistic chance of starting.

The Seahawks added Matt Flynn and drafted Russell Wilson the same offseason. Wilson beat out the FA addition in a training camp battle. Again this offseason, the Seahawks had Geno Smith and Drew Lock compete for the QB job. Geno looks better than he ever has after earning the job. The Texans didn’t make Mills earn his job. Don’t be surprised when you don’t see progress.
Facts! There wasn't anything that said Mills should've been unopposed at his position, yet , as stated, everywhere but at qb. If you listen to everyone at camp, the other qbs playing against the same defenses looked better by alot.

This team would not be 6-11 or 7-10 with Minshew or White. It would be the same or nearly the same that it is right now and what it's going to be. The team as a whole sucks, talent wise, at all the skill positions on offense save for Pierce and has a bad OL - particularly the interior and crappy TEs. Mills is struggling in large part to the crappy supporting cast. A 2nd stringer like Minshew wouldn't change the needle much at all unless the variables change next year. This includes the coach and OC.
Disagree. Minshew won 7 games with Jacksonville after they signed Foles who did nothing and he was a 5th rd rookie. Not saying he was the answer, but when he was traded for a 6th last year, people were talking about Jacksonville not trading in division, yet Detroit just traded Hockenson to the Vikings, inter division with afterall.

Big time disagree. Mils playing to a low 80s QB rating (I guess he slipped under this past game), which is generally an accurate portrayal of overall play, especially over longer data sets, I think is actually ok given the talent of this roster. You can argue Minshew plays 5 points or even 8 points above this, but it's not going to be much better. Maybe we have 2 wins now - max 3 in a best case scenario, which doesnt have high odds of happening.

Mills may not be the answer, but he's beem playing with a WEAK hand all season. Minshew doesnt change the needle IMO. The problems are collective and expansive, not just from Mills exclusively,

Yep, but I'm all for bringing in Minshew and letting him compete with Mills for the starting spot and drafting a QB in 2024.

Not giving Mills any competition was one mistake. Another mistake was knowing his lack of game experience, they limited his preseason game snaps by treating him like a seasoned vet. The guy should have been getting as many reps as possible.

I'm not into mock drafts or evaluating college talent. However, based on the description. How does Young compare to Teddy Bridgewater?
Style wise he is closer to drew brees that scrambles or Russell Wilson a few years back maybe. And if anything he looks thinner than bridgewaterb and as possibly murray short. The issue would be is he skilled enough to overcome size? I think so but it is a weak yes based on drafting Bryce at number 1

True, but I don't think it would matter.

Mills is the run of the Mills.

Reps aren't going to make him a franchise QB.

As the Texans have done since inception....draft a QB1, then insert him as starter on a very inferior team. This team has never properly developed a QB. Since Mills was the pick, Caserio and company should've been on an immediate lookout for a veteran pocket passer to run this offense while Mills was developed over his first couple of seasons. The guy only had 11 "starts" with Stanford before taking over for the Texans in GM2 last season.

Even with the wrong approach Mills put up a solid 5 games down the stretch. My only guess for the sudden turnaround was that Kelly was relieved of calling the game and Pep had stepped in for a change of pace. No matter how we look at Kelly or Pep....that awful play book was suddenly working and Mills looked like he had jumped the development hurdle far sooner than expected. Kelly out and Pep in. Pep decides to dump the prior offense and install his offense. Pep's offense looks far too constrained.....like Lovie's approach of playing not to lose. I don't know why Pep felt it necessary to toss the old play book b/c it had obviously worked very well down the stretch.

In retrospect, that old OB/Kelly playbook may have been just fine.....it sucked b/c of the way they building a game plan then executing to a fault with little to no adjustments in game. I guess the biggest mystery of the 2021 season.....who was making the game plan and calling the plays down the stretch? Whoever that offensive minded person was, they successfully made Mills comfortable and productive. Whatever the staff thought was accomplished this season is being viewed by everyone as a big step backward.

Anyhow....we're watching another failed attempt at developing a QB1 by the Texans. This is the biggest reason I'm absolutely hesitant on handing this current staff another rookie QB1 to try and prepare for the NFL. I'm hoping they coach this team to another high RD1 pick in 2024 and then get dismissed before they can do any further damage. I'd like to see a new HC and his staff get the gift of a pick high enough to select a QB1 of their choice.

Another difference from 2021. Maybe Caserio should get the headset and be in the press box again. :kitten:

I'm fine with that also for sure. Just saying that anybody making the assertion that the Texans are a 6-11 or 7-10 team with Minshew is pure assanine talk.
Nobody was making any assertion.

We (or at least some of many of us) know that Minshew has been the better QB ever since he set foot on the NFL field.

Minshew's name always comes up as a guy to be a place holder starting qb...& it never materializes....There's a reason for that...he's not very good either. He did nearly the same thing Mills has done in his 1st 2 seasons...played sporadically ok his 1st season and won a few games more than people thought he should...Came in the next year as the starter & "regressed" from a numbers, performance and team record standpoint....

Yep. Minshew is accurate and understands the position, but he has a small arm, so that limits his value. There's a reason why he's remained a backup - a good one I might add - for 2.5 years now. He's viewed as not having enough arm talent to become a viable starter long term. If someone gave the Eagles a 3rd, I'm sure they would let him go elsewhere to compete for a starting job. Yet it doesn't happen. Why? Spoiler alert: he's a backup level talent.

He's not 6'0. This is inflated to help his prospect status of not being considered 'too small'. Guessing Young will grade out somewhere between 5'10 and 5'11
Well Bryce is a baller. Usually a decent player has the skills but lack the intangibles. Bryce seems to be balanced. Looks to be a smart qb. Not saying he’s Superman but he could very well be a key piece

To be fair. I don't think anyone is making that assertion. However, I doubt Minshew or any experienced QB would lead an offense to ONE first down in a half.
With our OC and o-line HC Jesus would be pissed off and cursing after the first half. It's hopeless. Despair is all we have. Gloom Doom and all that kind ah crap. Get with the program.

Comparing a QB that has bad measurables to a HOF QB isn't fair to the young man. If Caserio drafts Young I hope he beats the odds. What makes you so sure he will be at the odds after seeing guys like Manziel/Flutie fail.

Doesn't really have anything to do with my thoughts on Young, which I've already stated a few times... but...

Did Flutie fail?

The 1984 Heisman Trophy winner played in 92 NFL games with 66 starts and compiled a record of 38-28 (.576) as a starter, including a 23-9 (.719) mark in home games. His NFL statistics include 2,151 attempts with 1,177 completions (54.7 percent) for 14,715 yards and 86 touchdowns. Here

I mean it isn't hall of fame worthy but it doesn't suck for an 11th-round pick. So do you think Young is more talented than Flutie, given their similar size?

Manziel? Attitude, work ethic, alcohol, disposition is why he failed, in my opinion.

Nope I think Flutie was as talented as Young is. Go back and checkout his games/highlights.

I actually agree with you Flutie was a good QB. I think that's Young's ceiling at best. I want more than good at the QB position for the next decade.

BTW, if Young is the pick I hope Caserio goes all in on offense to give Young his best chance to succeed. Johnston/Washington/Achane/Stromberg/Avilla etc... Go all in on the offense and try to fill in the holes in FA on defense. Will the Texans be bad next yr? Most likely yes. But the offense should be a young talented group that can grow together. Funny thing is if Caserio drafts this way some posters will use Young's success and he will have some success, to use that to knock Mills. Mills never stood a chance this year. Not that I want Mills to be the starting QB next yr.

If Young is the pick in 2023 go all offense and draft defense with the extra picks in 2024.

Nah, I disagree with your opinion even if I don't agree that Minshew is a franchise qb. Those plays when the wr was open like vs the Bears, giants, and countless others, he makes those throws. That's not to say they would win those games, but if the offense and the qb is putting more pressure on the opposition, then they would be able to evaluate some of the younger players. Again, go look back at the Jaguars offensive skill players and tell me who Minshew was throwing to that year when he won 6 games and he was a rookie. There are basic plays Mills leaves on the field continuously.

And would you agree that this yrs skill players look like the skill players in 2002? I mean Pharoh was starting most of the yr at TE. Akins who was picked up off of the WW has been their best playmaker and I think that speaks volumes.

In his first three season playing with Watson, Akins caught 90 passes for 1,046 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is a terrible blocker. But when given the opportunity, the guy has always made plays. So, him being their best TE is not surprising. On the topic of TEs, what has happened to Brevin Jordan? He was inactive for this game.

He got hurt, Akins was brought in and Jordan is now redundant

Minshew TD/INT ratio was 37/11.
Not to mention that he can make plays with his legs, too.

Comparing Mills to Minshew is shameless. :brando:

I agree. If we draft qb in 23, then yes all offense through round 3. Maybe on third day select defense if someone is there the coaches like. I just don't expect this from Lovie.

Fudge Watson. I’ll always stand behind my team. Disappointed? Yeah.. but everyone makes there own choices at the end of the day. Currently don’t have a favorite nfl player right now, just here to support the team

@JB, a couple of months ago I thought the same thing and even posted it. But I'm a witness that @DanielTx has been posting on the forum after Watson.

Like many things on this forum, the number of WoF fans were overstated. The only poster I think who joined this forum strictly for Watson and hasn't made a post since he left was ClemsonTiger and maybe 1 or 2 other posters.

No worries man. You might see me post once or twice on game day. You guys have been keeping me up to date with texan news so I enjoy coming here. I knew we would suck like many others but I didn’t think this bad. We might not win another game and I will still be here. I’m just looking forward to April 27th when we draft the best player, Bryce Young
