Steel B's Mock 1.0

Since JB asked

Would you consider Burns, a 2023 1st and 3rd, Plus a 2024 1st enough to move down to say pick #4?

Burns is a premium pass rusher that still has a couple of yrs on his rookie deal. The Rams supposedly were willing to give up two 1sts for Burns.

JB, I know you asked SteelB but here's my though on that trade. Why trade our picks when we can get Will Anderson #1 and use the 1b on a plug and play OL talent. I'm happy with our picks status.

Not a good look for Young or Stroud yesterday. None of these QB's are doing it for me. Typical Texans #1 pick coming, no franchise changing QB for yourself or to get top value for trading the pick
Come draft time Stroud and Young will both be pumped up by the draftniks and media just like Fields and Tua and Lawrence were... someone will want them, will just depend on if Caserio overvalues the pick like Smith did

2023 is the last year of Burns rookie deal and he carries a cap hit of $16M
I don't think Carolina would do that deal but if it was the best offer on the table I'd do it if it meant trading down no further than 5

I'd prefer a 2023 1st and 2nd and a 2024 1st and 2nd

If I was going to do a deal for a player it would be for a Q Williams or Jeffrey Simmons type monster

I wouldn't trade down further than 5 either. I'm not scared of the cap hit on Burns and wouldn't trade for him unless I knew beforehand that he would be willing to do an extension.

What if I told you that you could get Anderson or Carter at #4, plus extra picks/players?

But if you trade down from that top pick to #4 or later Carter is very possibly gone and Burns won't have near the impact
I'm thinking one of Anderson/Carter will be there at #4. Burns and Anderson on the same defense would be awesome too. Then if that happens and Lovie isn't here, draft Ika in the 2nd and know you're going to have a young dominant DL for the next 5-10 yrs.

You could still get Mills or whoever plays QB next yr a weapon with the Browns pick and another weapon in the 3rd in addition to finding your center in the 3rd.

I've got a feeling by the end of next April Caserio's going to have even more picks to work with.

He has 2 voidable years on his contract... I think he wants to go to the money. Both Williams and Simmons FA after 2023
Hope you're right and if I was Caserio I would pay the man.

How do you feel about FA Montrez Sweat in FA?

Isn't Burns represented by your favorite agent?

What do you mean come draft time? They have been consensus top picks since last season.I don't care what they do, but whomever they draft needs to be a difference maker instantly. If not, everybody getting fired. The Colts are the classic example of a championship roster without a triggerman since Luck and now the coach is fired because of it. You can build all you want and win some games and don't have a chance because the guy under center is holding your team back. I like most of the so called trench players, but those guys wash out just like qb or any other position. Von Miller is awesome, they weren't in contention until Manning jumped on the ship and they continued to add guys like Ware. Mack, Bosa brothers and even JJ Watt couldn't get anywhere in their prime.

Dont know, if he is then Cal needs to stay far away.

If all owners feel like I do (They dont) DM/Avery would be a footnote in NFL history.
Aint gonna happen. Drew Rosenhaus still have a great client list. Leigh Steihgnburg has made a comeback and college guys see who getting the big deals. Its the money game, sorry to tell you.

The Colts were overrated.

I'm for drafting a QB, just not in the next draft.

I know this and it's why I watch a lot less NFL football than I used too.

I'm thinking he's playing hurt.

He hurt his chest a couple of games ago and hasn't been the same.
He's better going forward than backwards. His athleticism in that combat zone has exposed that. He's a rookie and no all rookie can be all world in the beginning. He will get better, but its hard to be something you're not. He gets over his pads alot. You can get away with it in college, but playing inside is hard.

He will get better this offseason.

NFL S&C will help Green's issues. He's already done pretty well overall.

I meant by the time teams start seriously considering who they'll draft.

GEEZ, take it easy before you stroke out. I wasn't impugning your boyz, I was merely stating it's much to early to declare the top pick. You're getting much too worked up here lately. Did you put a lot of money on the Texans to bounce back this year or something? Start drinking heavy maybe? What happened to your usual laid back self?

I don't have boyz except the man child at home who seemingly sleeps in the kitchen. All those other players are just prospects. I'm just a parent enjoying this new recruiting thing going on with my son. God willing, he will be criticized or applauded on this board in a few years and reach his potential after he signs with one of these programs in 2024. We will see. Honestly, I don't take this stuff as serious as you imply. Its cool, we're all behind these screens talking ball, I'm cool. Real cool.

I saw a very interesting concept that worked very well in the Ravens/New Orleans game. Ravens have a FB Davis 6'3" 311 lbs that protects QB and opens running lanes with intense power. We could use a player of that concept ASAP.

I might have to do this deal if it was for D.Brown instead of Burns

I bet you could get D.Brown.

I would ask for D. Brown and Chinn plus a 1st rd pick swap and a 3rd. Plus a 2024 1st/3rd. I dont know D. Brown or Chinn's contract status. Add Anderson to these guys plus a FA LB and the defense would look much better.

Imagine a defense that looks like this,

Anderson/D. Brown/Draft Ika at the top of the 2nd/Greenard

Harris/Devin Bush/Wallow

Stingley/Pitre/Chinn/Nelson Nickel Back Thomas/ Reserve King

Offense

Mills/Minschew

RB's Pierce/Mattison in FA/R. Johnson

TE's Howard/Jordan/Kincaid drafted/Luke Musgrave

WR's Johnston/Collins/Metchie/Moore/Camp

OT's Tunsil/Howard/Heck
OG's Green/Cann/Sign Ethan Pocic in FA
C Strmberg/Pocic.

Plus you would have three 1st rd picks to get your QB in 2024.

Unlikely all of this happens but it's possible and fun to play around with.

Carolina gets the QB of their choosing. I'm trading Cooks for a 3rd in this scenario.

They are both FA's in 2024. 2023 cap #'s for Brown is $7.5M and $1.7 for Chinn. What is Chinn on IR for?
edit: Chinn's on IR for hamstring

I watched NC game last night. Drake Maye is the real deal. As of right now, IMO, I think he will be the #1 pick in 2024 NFL Draft.

Williams from USC is really good too.

I like both of these guys a lot more than any QB in this draft. Do you think the Texans should wait until 2024 to draft a QB? I would give up three 1sts and more to get either one of these 2 guys.

Luckily they've got two 2024 1sts. I think they will be bad enough where they may not have to make a trade.

If it were me I would use 1 of 2 1st RDs in 2023 to add another 1st RD in 2024. Halfway through next season I would fire Lovie and Caserio and bring in Josh McCown as HC to improve the chances for Maye or Williams. The odds of the Texans getting a good HC to come to Houston improve substantially if the new HC can draft Maye or Williams.

Agreed on all of this, minus firing Caserio. Cal should use your plan and by trading for the 2024 1st you could trade out of 1-1 probably still have a top 5 pick, a 2024 1st and another 2023 3rd, or maybe something similar to the deal Miami/49ers did for Lance. One things for sure, after seeing the Derrick deal, if Caserio decides to trade out of 1-1 he will get good value for the pick.

On another note, If Lovie had to have Stingley at 1-3, I sure wish he would have gone all in on the defensive side of the ball.

Stingley/Davis/Sam Williams would have been a game changer.

In this draft I hope if they pick Young they give him help with the rest of the draft.

1. Young
1. Johnston
1. After using Cleveland 3rd and # 34 Washington

65. Best center available, Van Pran, Patterson or Stromberg.

This would give YouNG his best chance to succeed. If Caserio doesn't pick Young I hope he does the same thing except pick Carter or Anderson at 1-1. We both liked Davis last year and Carter is even better than Davis.

I would go Stroud over Young.

Welcome to the Kool-Aide Brigade!

I knew you would come around.

Lol.
