Week 9 starts in HTown: Eagles vs Texans

We’re not getting Carter with Cleveland’s pick unless his stock falls considerably. Their pick is sitting at #9 right now and Watson will be back soon. That pick will most likely be 10 to 15 range.

Carter was top of my list early but the games he played this year he’s been inconsistent. He has disappeared for stretches and on occasions seemed lazy. I’m looking forward to seeing him this week. He should be back to full time starting.

Bresee from Clemson should be back this week as well. I think it’s a tighter race between those two than most believe for the first DT selected.

1. I’m going with TB74 on his assessment. The throw to Dorsett drifted from his inside shoulder to his outside shoulder by the time it was arriving. This caused Dorsett to break stride and twist to make a great catch. Had that ball remained to the inside shoulder….Dorsett easily catches the ball in stride and waltzes in for an easy TD.

2. On the TD. It could’ve been a far easier task had he led him a little more versus where the ball wound up. It became a bit more contested and the rookie TE made an awesome catch.

Nice drive regardless. Pierce continues his march toward the Rookie of the Year award.

Mills had an easy time on that first drive. Clean pockets. Open receivers who made the tough catches for him.
Even Burkhead made a guy miss.

Not so for Hurts; pressured twice; receivers were often covered, even though there were a couple of open receivers.
Overall, the Eagles had a tougher time to score their first TD.

Another long drive in the 2nd quarter by the Eagles that keeps the defense on the field far too long. Missed tackles at the core. One that stood out for me was 2 defenders running past the screen versus hitting the guy who caught it….that was ugly. Of course, Eagles score on the series.

After that fumble recovery, Mills second pass to OJ Howard was a bad one; that one needed to be to the outside so that Howard doesnt get popped by the defender.

Then on third and nine, Mills should have stayed in the pocket.
He spinned out and ran right into the rusher.
Initially it was just a 4-man pass rush against Max Protect.
Mills denied himself of any chance to make a play here.

Mills TD pass was ducking right on the button. Scramble and a laser to Moore. I have a real issue with the fact that they’re reviewing the TD. These are the nice little plays that show some of us that he’s got the tools. Now he needs the consistency.

A tie before halftime. Almost seems like the standard script for this season. Second half is where coaching and execution seem to fall apart.

On the TD pass, Mills also had a receiver open in the middle if he wanted a short completion for maybe 5-6 yards.
But he probably liked the look to the outside, with the RB as the outlet in case Moore doesnt get open.
In another word, Mills had all the help he needed on this drive, just like on the firs TD drive.

Texans D sacked Hurts twice to stop the Eagles first drive.

Jordan hold stopped the Texans ensuing drive.

Next the Texans D held again, giving the ball back to the offense at the HOU 20.

Then came Mills ill-advised pass that resulted in the INT.
The LDE was optioned.
Mills had to know this, similarly to the prior game.
He needed to call time out or check out of the pass play.
The boy has got to learn.

This gave the ball to the Eagles at the Texans 17.
TD Eagles.

Before the last interception he was forced out of the pocket. But if he would’ve kept his head/eyes down field. He would’ve saw Jordan on a slant, in the end zone. He panicked. He did however picked up some positive yards with his feet.

I like Jalen Camp, and think with more experience, he can turn out to be a decent WR1.

unfortunately, since Mills isn't making the line calls, I don't think he will be checking out of many plays...if any. I'm not sure if Pep is giving him that power.

That’s 3 drafts in the books. 2 drafts moving veterans into 2024, to go along with another rookie class, as well as FA additions for a new veteran and rookie QB to be part of……which would be a far better approach than the Texans last 20 years of existence.

When you average less than 20 ppg and you're going to have a 1300 yd rookie, how is he not part of the problem. Your qb is always a problem until you have one. You don't think Cleveland is saying we would be at least 6-2 if Brissett didn't make 2 rookie mistakes?

Play a team tough for about 3 quarters and then in the 4th, the opposition makes 1 or 2 plays more than we can that lead to points b/c they have a security blanket, go-to guy or 2 at WR or RB that they can rely on for production and we lose…. Just bolsters my opinion about this team’s main issues…we just dont quite yet have enough talent around the qb at the skill positions to finish these games. Pep and Lovie are doing Mills’ development a disservice with the conservative playcalling….trying to protect him from himself early in games……We all wonder why this kid & the offense continue to fall short in these very winnable games in the 4th qtrs……..Its b/c they’ve slowed his development down to a snails pace with the conservative, protective playcalling so that he doesn’t make a mistake early….then in the 4th qtr of tight games, they ask him to go win it……with no go-to guy..no security blanket… :crazy:

he has to be turned loose and allowed to make mistakes…if not the whole game, at least earlier in games………open it up…let him sling it and take his lumps like you’d let any young player at another skill position do. Sure It would be painful to watch at times, but he needs that to happen so he can make the mistakes when there’s no pressure….enough of them, so that he can begin to learn from them and develop and refine his decision-making and internal clock and pocket presence FASTER. Right now in pressure situations he’s being forced to make throws that he might not otherwise make. Unsure of when he needs to take off or try to squeeze that throw through that window or check it down. Its coming its just so SLOW. if he’s turned loose and allowed to just play the game. You can see his development at times…He ran today more than any other game i’ve seen him in the past and made some 1st downs with his feet Once he didn’t see it downfield immediately b/c his internal clock went off & he was gone. He wasnt doing that earlier in the season. Took him 8 damn games to figure that out. They keep putting him in these force type pressure packed 4th qtr situations and he’s already got enough of that coming from his defense putting pressure on him & the offense b/c they cant stop **** and they don’t really get him many extra possessions.

Making the line call and checking out of a play or call time out are different things altogether.

What we see as a play out that formation is actually a play with some variations (a series of plays if you will.)
Depending on the look of the D, the QB may (or may not - that is between the OC and the QB; some QB has more leeway than others).
In the worst case, like I said, Mills could have called time out.

This naked bootleg was run in the Titans game with the same result (badly).
It's not something Mills hasn't seen before.

Been reading up on Camp and his profile shows good promise. The Texans are going nowhere this season; Camp needs playing time to develope; the Texans need a large, fast deep threat with good hands. Camp needs to be activated to the 53 and should be given playing time. Need to see what he can do before the 23 draft. Who is Tyrone Johnson? Has he shown any promise? Perhaps send him to the PS and activate Camp.

They didn't have a chance. Phily was sleepwalking to start the game. But once they realized the Texans thought they could win, the stomped them. That first half was fools gold.

Part of my issue with Mills is lack of ownership of the offense. Like I said before, he's not a natural foorball player. We know #4 was setup to run some bs, but when it came time to make plays on his own, he did. Mills is totally opposite and you can't win anything with a robot with no fbi playing qb.

Do not forget that doc told us that green had a shoulder issue and a hamstring and should not even be on the field. On a side note did anybody see Raheem green?

I think the time is perfect for the Texans to find out what they have in WR, Jalen Camp. A former HS basketball player who made the move to football in his Jr year of HS. Did well enough in his first 2 years of football to get a scholarship from D1 Georgia Tech.

He didn’t get a lot time on the field during his career at GT, but showed enough to get drafted by the Jags in RD6. At 6-2 and 224 pounds he had the desired physical size, but what I figure got him drafted versus signing somewhere as an UDFA…..he popped a 4.45-40 and benched 225 lbs 30 times. This must’ve been at his Pro Day since they stated he would’ve set the Combine record for WR’s.

Like Mills….Texans have 9 more games to evaluate the potential he could bring to the team. Dammmm, benched 225 30 times for a WR!!!!! If I was Pep….I’d line this monster up in the Slot a few times just to see what kind of mismatches he could create.

I’m not sure a missed tackle or two by a cornerback is even worth mentioning in the context of our run defense.
And literally everyone on this team misses tackles so I’m inclined to point to coaching. I assume at some point in their careers all these guys could tackle.

Harris forced a fumble by Hurts with 1:47 to play, but the Eagles recovered.

He made another play or two.

Overall, the D didn't play too shabby.

Without the yardage given up at the end of the first half (thirty something yards) when they played prevent defense.
(The Eagles missed a 54yd FG), the D allowed roughly the same yardage as the Eagles D did.

And the Texans had more TOP.

Had Mills not thrown the INT that gave the Eagles the ball at the HOU17, it would have been a total different ball game.

Not that they're where they need to be, but they played fairly well considering the opponent.

I'm curious to know how you think these guys can tackle?

If they already know how to approach it, then they wouldn't need any more coaching, do they?

From the little bit I saw while watching the replay on NFLN, the Eagles took it very easy on the Texans. They only handed it to Sanders 17 times. It looked like they wanted to let Hurts show off for his family, which he did in the second half

I frequent the draft forum for a decade and a half. I had evaluated several players (I don't try to do too many of them).

But I had named a number of sure tacklers.
I can't remember all of them, but I had said this guy, that guy can really shed blocks and get to the target. Never failed.

Or when I said Kareem Jackson is a sure tackler, it stays true.
I said you can have this guy and when the time comes, you can have him play the safety spot.

I had named a few suspect tacklers like Swearinger and such.

I made the call on J J Watt, too, while a number of Texans fans thought that he's not quick enough.

I said he's plenty quick and deserves to be drafted at that slot.
(I can't take credit for him being great though; that was his own work ethic).
