Texans random thought of the day

Reeves-Maybin seemed to be around the ball quite a bit. I know he missed one open tackle in the hole, but he was able to slow down the RB enough that it was only a minimal gain. Overall, I thought Reeves-Maybin, Wallow, and Hewitt were our best LB's in this game.

That was a great ******* run, probably the most excited I've been about an player since Nuk, or that QB we had in '17 not named Savage, but I'm more than a little concerned how he's going to hold up. He already has 86 carries. On pace for nearly 300. His college career high was 106.

On the radio they were comparing him to Marion Barber. They said expect 4 good years out of him, but on the amount carries he is getting could shorten it. So they said shelve him or limit his carries towards the end of the year.

It would be good to have a second RB on the team that could share the load. Someone like a Marlon Mack…

I seriously don’t know what Caserio was thinking on that one. Or Lovie. Whoever is responsible.

Shelf one of the few players that make this team watchable? Nope. He is going to get a bell cow workload this season if the Texans want to be competitive. And he should because that gives them the best chance to win.

Next season they will need to find a compliment for him and share the load. But this season he is going to need to be a bellcow for this offense to move the ball.

You mean the Marlon Mack that was on the 49ers practice squad until 9/21 and hasn't managed to get even 1 carry this season?
Perhaps there are things fans here are not seeing. He couldn't stay on the Colts, couldn't stay on the Texans PS and can't get a single carry for the 49ers yet some here want him taking an active roster spot?

Yep unless they trade for someone like Josh Jacobs or select someone off some teams PS

Perhaps. The fan is usually wrong in their analysis.

But I have been watching Burkhead run and don’t know what to make of it.

A chance to win what? 4 games? They'll end up running this dude into the ground for nothing, then when it's time to be competitive who knows what kind of toll will have been taken. Love Pierce, but he's not going to last long as violently as he runs. And the workload that he's on pace to triple the most he's ever done, will take a toll too.

So just as a thought exercise, where would you rank the Texans in this bunch of one win teams? Top, middle, bottom? I haven't seen all these teams play, but I would still put the Texans near the bottom. The Raiders are definitely the best of the bunch.

I would trade a late rd pick to Carolina for either Hubbard of Foreman. Gotta take some of the load off of Pierce. It would be worth a 5th or 6th. IMHO

They need to find a Foreman type to take 50-60 carries from Pierce. That's 4-5 carries a game. To think they had Donte Hilliard on the team. Heck bring in Devontae Booker and Derrick Gore. Both are good ST's guys and would be upgrades.

Speaking of this, what would you give up in a trade for D.J. Moore/Edge Burns/NT Brown? I dont know if I would consider trading for any of these guys because of the cap space they will take up.

I haven’t seen much football this season outside of the Texans games, but they’ve looked horrible to me.

This last game hasn’t really changed that perception, they beat a team who beat themselves. Lawrence seemed to have a wide open D to throw on all game long and missed his shots.

On our side Pierce had a nice game but there is nothing else much to talk about around him.

Collins is finally getting the ball and made some nice catches but it’s hard to be viewing a 60 yard receiving day as a positive, and we still aren’t getting the ball to Cooks either.

It worries me that aside from broken plays the commentators are able to get on the telestrator in live play and draw big patches of turf where Lovie’s D is exploitable. It makes me think that the problems run beyond a lack of talent.

We’ve been watching bend don’t break philosophy D’s for years now, RAC was a different setup but went for a similar boom and bust big play style, and even when we had a talented QB running it, you can’t keep up with the top teams in a shootout if the foundation isn’t right.

Maybe they turn a corner and I’m proven wrong, but this win against an awful Jags team isn’t changing my perception.

The team does seem to have some better talent and going to be stacked with high draft picks I’m hoping McNair will finally clean house on the coaching staff at least and that we’ll be a top destination for HC candidates this time around.

Settle down. The last thing they should be worried about is running Pierce into the ground. One of the perks of drafting him is he had little tread on the tires. If I have a nice Ferrari i’m gonna drive it, not let it sit in the garage while I drive my old station wagon (Burkhead).

Only Texans fans would say, “Stop using the only effective player on offense! Think of the mileage!”

Agreed. Foreman went really cheap as well in FA to Panthers. I think they should’ve acquired him but they went Mack instead oh well.

I don’t necessarily think the Panthers will embrace full tank mode and offload their best young players. I think Mccaffrey is a candidate to leave. But only if its a Von Miller type trade where the team wants to “give him a shot at a ring” instead of wasting away through a rebuild.

Moore/Burns/Brown could maybe be had for day 2 picks but I don’t know if I want to go there then have to worry about the contract. But they certainly aren’t coming at the standard trade a 6 for player + 7th price that teams have been trading back end of roster players for… they are studs and will be valued as such.

Only a few Texans fans think like that. I never seen anyone on any other football forum worry about a rookie running back being over used.

Having someone competent to give him a breather is the real issue. Nobody’s saying to stop using him.

I don’t care how little tread on the tires someone has, with the violent nature he runs with, that’s going to take a toll, especially when he’s tripling the most he’s ever done.

Maybe it has little effect on him because he’s young and all, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t give me concern.

Agree. He is an exciting player to watch - something the Texans have way too little of at the moment. If you're fighting a battle, you use your most effective weapons.

That's another very good reason you don't invest top 5, or even top 10 picks on a running back because they get busted real good on just about every play, instead get one in the mid rounds as Casserio did.

I believe they will draft a RB in 2023.
They will take another RB next year. The question is whether it will be the lightning to Pierce's thunder, or another RB that is similar to Pierce. I think Pierce can be both Thunder and Lightning, so I would go with another pounder. If we had another Pierce, we could wear teams down by running both of those guys down their throat. Pierce has enough catching ability, that he teams won't be able to sell out to stop the run when he is in.

I believe Zach Charbonnet would be that RB…..only bigger. He could be an excellent option to Pierce.

Texans at 31 in the new NFL site's power rankings. They did have this to say about Damien Pierce.

Dameon Pierce rushed for 99 yards and his third touchdown of the season. Through five weeks, Pierce is fifth in the league in rushing, averaging a plump 4.8 yards per attempt. That kind of production places the fourth-round pick firmly in the Offensive Rookie of the Year discussion.

Hopefully this is the kind of guy the Texans start drafting.

I don’t understand why it’s so hard for this team to find RBs.

Just me but I think that the Texans are going to use Pierce like I think they're going to use stingly in that use them up if necessary replace them three to four years from now. It gives Caserio and lovey something to hang their hat on with their fans and ownership.

I guess that's what they thought they had bringing back Burkhead 🤷

Charbonet is excellent and would be a phenomenal RB to go with Pierce. I think there will be a bunch on good RBs in the draft. I’ve watch a couple Utah games this year and Tavion Thomas is a big physical back. He’d be a greatpick up. They also have a good TE Dalton Kincaid.

I looked at Kincaid a couple of nights ago. What rd do you think he goes in? I was very impressed.

Laugh all you want. But RBs don't last forever. The more Pierce is used now, the less he'll have in the tank when the Texans are ready to compete.

You want to check out a surprise TE.....Kemari Averett of Bethune-Cookman. He could be a sleeper until Senior Bowl, Combine, or his Pro Day.

All I can think about is Steve Slaton and how much he was used his rookie year and then got injured and was never the same. Injuries can happen to anyone anytime, but RBs have a short shelf life. Since we ain’t going anywhere this season I would limit his carries the last 4 games. Guarantee any incentives he has based on production. Make sure to draft/sign someone who can share the work load in the off-season.
