Most Disappointing Texan So Far in 2022

Hey all, I thought I'd start a thread about who you feel is the most disappointing Texans so far in the 2022-23 season. Thinking this over, there aren't as many candidates on the list as I originally thought, since expectations were already low for Texans team in rebuild mode.

While Davis Mills will probably receive his share of votes, I'm going with Jonathan Greenard. To date, his stats aren't horrible (1.5 sacks, 9 combined tackles, 5 TFL, 3 QB hits, 0 PDs/FF), but I was hoping he would build off last season's performance and have more impact in the pass rush. Like Mills, was hoping he would take it to the next level and become more of a force on the edge. That hasn't happened though, and quite frankly Greenard has looked invisible for long stretches of play.

I guess Greenard is who he is: a useful OLB/DE type who deserves a place on the team and can make plays. But it doesn't look like he'll be an impact player or particularly good edge rusher, and I guess that's what I was hoping for. Perhaps I was expecting too much.

I don't follow any of the players close enough to be aware of their stats. I'll see others post stats, but they sort of go in one eye and out the other and never make it to my brain. So, my simple eyeball test tells me Mills is my biggest disappointment so far. He'll either get better or he'll be replaced, probably by someone we'll end up complaining about just as much.

Hmmm....
Greenard is a good choice. I only noticed him on one play in this last game. For his position, that's not acceptable.

Mills is also a good choice. He looks to have regressed. he seems to have happy-feet in the pocket, and keeps sailing balls. He has to get better, and when we went up-tempo, he did look better.

Grugier-Hill and Kirksey. I'll put these two together. They've been atrocious. They seem to be out of position on damned near every play. They're not, but it seems that way since everyone only focuses on the big plays the defense gives up. They miss too many tackles, and generally aren't getting it done.

Roy Lopez...he doesn't look bad, but he doesn't look that good either. I seem to notice Hinish getting pressure more than I see it from Lopez, and Lopez is in the game more.

Ogbonnia Okoronkwo...Has he even played? I know he has, but really, where is he?

Lovie Smith. What can I say about Lovie? His defense has it's good moments, but man, it has it's bad ones as well, and the bad ones overpower that good ones. He's also made some head-scratching calls as the head coach. We keep seeing a lot of penalties, and that's on the coach for not fixing it.

My winner for most disappointing is Pep Hamilton. His play-calling seems to be even worse than that of TK. I always said there was no mystery in what Tim Kelley was going to do. Pep's playcalling does have some mystery to it, but the mystery is...why the hell did he call that play? or...what the hell was Pep thinking? or...why the hell was Burkhead in for that play? Pep isn't doing a good job of developing Mills. Pep doesn't seem to know how to scheme WR's open. I had high hopes for Pep, but he just seems to be a complete disappointment in my eyes.

How is this even a question…has to be Mills. The optimists of us were hoping for a step forward…the pessimists may not believe hes the guy, but at least probably expected him to hold serve where he was at the end of the season. Right now, he’s looking like he’s regressed. He has plenty of time to turn it around, but it aint looking good as of right now.

I guess 1b has to be Pep Hamilton. Dude was expected to come in and help Mills get to the next level…his playcalling tho has been George Godsey /Chris Palmerish at times. Up until last game The “no coast” offense has just been the “no offense” offense in the 4th qtr and we have yet to put a full 4 qtrs of offense together. The only reason he gets a break somewhat is b/c we have such a young team with a young qb leaning a new offense…**** needs to change tho.

The entire franchise. It feels like the whole organization is devolving from a shitty team to an even shittier team.

For individual players, for me it's Mills. Right now he looks like a barely competent backup QB. Like Mills, the rest of the roster are JAGs. They lack even one clear play-maker.

As far as coaches, Lovie is Lovie and he's doing exactly what should have been expected of him.

The players are about as I expected including Davis Mills with the exception of defensive back Xavier Thomas who went on the injured report. I am really disappointed in all of the coaching although the game against the Chargers special teams look better.

Rather than list all the candidates of failure in this clown car called the Texans, I'm going to list the competent players. Its a much shorter list. Pierce, petre, stingly, the kicker and our only reciever. Everyone else seems like JAGs to me.

I think it's the entire TE group. I suppose none of them can run a decent route or catch the ball.

Brown did catch a pass for a TD. :texanbill: They promptly cut his ass. Guess he didn't get the memo.

Maybe I should re-think my answer. OK It's the entire coaching staff. I use the term coaching rather loosely.

Is it possible to be so bad accidently? Lovie screwed the pooch and 'almost' won a game. Whew! Bet he won't make that mistake again this year.

If Cal were to apologize do you think Culley would return.

Hard to be disappointed when you're not expecting much to begin with.

If I had to be disappointed I guess it would be still having a team full of backups and special teamers that get to be called starters because this is the team they play for. Some pieces slooooowly coming in, but that pace really needs to pick up.

Frankly it's too early in the season to be disappointed ask me after 8-9 games. But I'll try so here is my take the same Texans team in the first 4 games so the selection is Lovie and/or Pep.

Not really shocked with Davis mills tbh, he's who I've always thought he be.....a back up QB.

Tytus Howard is who I'm most disappointed/meh with

Has to be Maliek Collins. 8 tackles, zero sacks in 4 games. He's done nothing that will get him to next season's $8.5 million. And someone suggested that Collins could start on a playoff team. He shouldn't be starting here.
Most other options aren’t paid to be a difference maker. But Collins is… and he is playing what Lovie calls the most important position on the team. The team chose to re-sign him and not address Lovie’s most important position on defense in another way. He has not been a positive for this team against the run or pass.

Lovie and Pep, so much bad decision making. I think Mills "regression" has had a lot to do with coaching.
I agree with this statement. I can't decide if Lovie or Pep is the most disappointing but since Lovie is responsible for Pep, I think I will have to go with him. I expected better from both.
It's ironic that the last 2 head coaches have over 60 years combined coaching experience and can't seem to make the right decisions.

I’m fairly sick of the Texans hiring coaches who are ultra conservative, appear to be reluctant to run up a score, and always play the game not to lose. I just don’t understand their appeal to teams. The NFL has evolved into an uptempo offensive style that defenses have to prepare for…..Texans represent a comfortable breather.

They want to keep games close to justify their position. “Oh we would have won if we got a couple breaks ___ in that game.” Turtle shell don’t turn it over offense and playing field position helps the game go faster and reduces opportunities for the other team to blow you out. It is good to make a bad team look “competitive” as evidenced by the first four games this season for our Houston Texans.

But you’re not fooling anyone into believing the team is an actual contender with that style. Even when OB was reeling off AFC South division titles with the clown car QB play and turtle shell offense… everyone knew they would exit the playoffs as soon as they were matched with a true contender.

Man that’s why I wanted a young up and coming head coach. These old farts are stuck in yesteryears as well as stubborn. They tend to not deviate from their philosophy verses adapting to what fits their talent. Bill O’Brien wasn’t old but he had an old man’s mentality. Plus he was the smartest man in the room type of guy.
The biggest issue I’m having is the type of control both Janice and Cal allows certain people. You would think they would’ve learned their lesson from that O’Brien’s situation. But as we can see Nick has too much say. The head coach should pick his coaching staff not the GM.

I think the McNairs are the only people that have to be fooled.

If I were signing a younger basically unproven as an NFL head coach I would not offer more than 2
years for a contract.

Edit : we could have had Culley for one year in my opinion.

Kenyon Green.
Don't like Jersey #59 for OG.
Concussion & nagging injuries early.
Had such high expectations
Not sure what he is anymore?
Passed on some great young players to address OL (that’s still bad) it only makes it hurt worse.

Green played well the 2 games before the Chargers game. He will be fine, he's young and getting adjusted to the NFL game.

If they were just trying to hire a black coach for Watson, they could've just hired EB too. Now they have a bridge coach or whatever they want to call it. That means in 2 years when they fire Lovie, they will either hire a dc who plays 4-3 or a system change which which will be years of wasted picks.

The gap between Zion and Greene is vast and he went #17 overall.
Isn't Zion a RG? Not that it matters. Eye of the beholder and all that... they could have taken Davis also... or Lloyd or xxx

Lovie Smith. Is there really another option? I was ready for him to be gone after week 1. Settling for the tie was pathetic and I'm surprised the players haven't quit on him already. I know I have as a fan.

Zion was penciled in @ RG. But could easily fit LG or play OC when Linsley moves on. But it made sense for Chargers to address one of if not the worst Right Side Offensive Lines in the NFL, knowing they must invest in protecting Herbert. It was a need pick, luckily he’s everything as advertised, which was my point on Greene. Need sure, but not as clear cut, in that case bpa is appropriate and Greene was not it. Lloyd would be of huge benefit to either franchise.

Better question would be who have you been most impressed by?

The list would be a lot shorter.

For as bad as this franchise has been overall, theyve almost always had stars that brought some level of excitement or hope on gamedays.

Theyve almost always had some young player or players that made big plays and got you up out of your seat.

I like some of the guys theyve brought in but i dont see Dunta Robinson, Demeco, Arian, Cushing, OD just to name a few...

I like some of the young guys but meh....entire team is just meh to me....

Pitre and Pierce can make plays. Every now and then Green mauls someone pretty sweet. Pitre>Dunta, Pierce< Arian. Really want to see Harris at LB and see what we got there. Agree rest so far are not flashing, but they are really challenging Stingley and he is doing better than KJAX in his first year at CB and he was just trying to man a side. So see some real potential there, but against the top guys he wins and loses. Was expecting some turnovers with his ball skills

Just about every pre draft discussion/ranking I saw had Green the #1 OG, there were a few that had Zion. It was close but none that had one or the other as a 'vast' superior talent to the other. Texans went with who they were familiar and comfortable with

Im a big pitre fan and have been since before he was a Texan, but Dunta was pretty electric as a rookie corner.

Dude was knocking the crap out of folks, had 3 sacks 87 tackles and 6 picks. All of that just from the rcb position.

Dunta was a stud before he got injured, but just specifically talking about his rookie year dude was waaay more exciting than anything ive seen from this group.

I think you might be selling him a bit short. Love pitre, and the season is still young, but right now Dunta was the more exciting rookie imo.
