You know that teams can push unused cap space to the next year.

Then move Green out to RT when that happens. Don't need to overpay for a 30-something reserve OT.
If you've got the cap space why not use it on a 1 yr deal. You would think Caserio is spending your money.

I want Green to learn the LG position and stay there. No more of the shuffling of ol to different positions. If I have to pay for a guy like Reiff to make sure Green stays at LG I'm good with it.

Or just put Charlie Heck back out there. Let Green play at LG & leave him there.

There should be some drop off between Howard & Heck, but it won't be the difference between a Super Bowl season and a 4 win season
Thank you, was about to post that. Moving highly drafted OLmen has spelled misery for this franchise. Leave him at his position and let him learn.

I am using 2022 as a development year. We don't need more vets like people were discussing Baker Mayfield or now Riley. Let the young guys play and develop. Push more cap space out, and make moves next year if we see good development especially in Mills. If Mills sucks and we have to start over with a high draft on a QB, that will make 2023 another bad year as that QB acclimates. I don't spend on significant free agents until the roster is ready to compete. The overall roster is better now, but still lacks star power. SO I expect a more competitive team, but nothing special until these kids develop. Ok to keep a veteran leader in each room though

True, but the Oline is thin on decent talent and we need a halfway decent one to properly assess and develop Mills.
To me, this is crucial to the immediate success of this team.

Agree about Green. Let him acclimate to his best position - this is why I would like to see a halfway decent veteran added so the line is less disrupted when injuries occur.

With Tunsil back, the Texans have more talent than last year.

Tunsil - LT
Howard - RT & LT
Heck - RT
Kenyon Green - RT & LT
Cedric Ogbuehi - RT & LT
The rookies

Not to mention the Texans are #3 on the waiver wire. No need to throw good money at a 33 year old reserve. This is not a playoff contender.

As far as Mills is concerned, I'd like to see if he can improve in regards to evading the rush. It's something the Texans need to consider when evaluating the QB position before next year's draft.

Agreed and signing a guy like Reiff assures that you don't have to move the young guys around. I look at signing Reiff as a backup as an insurance policy for the young guys and on a 1 yr deal it won't hurt the cap next off-season. There's no real reason to not sign a vet backup other than to save the McNair's money.

Like AJ Cann?

we’re talking about backups now, we’ve got our starting lineup. Tunsil, Green, Britt, Cann, Howard.

Plenty of veteran backups. Heck, Morrisey, Ogbuehi, McCray, Scharping…

I’m satisfied with this OL, with the other bodies we haven’t mentioned, going into training camp & the 2022 season to develop a core to build on in the 2023 offseason

Other than we don’t need another vet backup. We’ve got enough poor depth that won’t be part of this team going forward. We need to be looking for diamonds in the rough, young talented, developmental talent that might be part of the future

So you want Mills running around for his life so you can see if he can evade the rush. I'm sure the offense will run the way it's supposed to the way you're wanting thing to be. (Brilliance.) BTW, I hope that Heck improves and everybody on the OL stays healthy. Whatever happens I want Green to stay and learn at LG so he can be the best player he can be. I think he can be a pro bowl level player in a couple of yrs. Maybe even more. BTW, I think you're right, they are going to go with a bunch of scrubs as backup OL, just like most of the rest of the NFL does.

Reiff is much more than a scrub, but he's had trouble staying healthy. Out of the guys Lucky listed other than Heck who's the developmental guy? Personally I'm hoping Steckler improves enough to be the guy you want. But I'm not willing to risk the offense being fully functional with the current list of backup OT's currently on the roster unless the young guys improve. But hey, if you guys are willing to risk seeing the offense and Mills improve because you hope a guy can develop well enough to not miss a beat then so be it. Personally I think this is wishful thinking. Of course I value the vet leadership that Reiff would bring more than most.

What I want to see is if Mills can pickup a 1st down with his feet to extend a drive. 5 1st downs rushing in 13 games. That's about 1 first down every 3 games. Mills is dead last among NFL starting QBs in rushing 1st downs. That's both total and per game. Worse than age 30+ (or 40+) QBs like Stafford, Cousins, Ryan, and Brady. That's inexcusable for a 23 year old. Mills isn't a total stiff (though he's a little stiff). He's certainly athletically on par with Mac Jones, who picked up 22 1st downs rushing.

A defense that never has to worry about a QB running is a defense without stress. Mills has to show improvement in this area in 2022. He has to show more ability to make off schedule plays. Else the Texans have Matt Schaub 2.0. A QB good enough to lose in the playoffs. And a franchise still looking for a franchise QB.

I do hope Mills improves on converting 1st downs. But I don’t care if he rushes for as many as Mac Jones, or whoever.

I understand what you’re saying, I think. But if we’re leading the league in 3rd & long I’m not going to hold our QBs lack of rushing 1st downs against him.

Mills seems to be able to beat defenders to the pylon on boots around the GL. So the athletic ability is there. Personally I'm glad the young guy is hanging in the pocket and looking to make plays and learning how to read defenses, rather than the playground crap we've seen around here the last few yrs.

Tell me do Brady/Stafford make many plays with their legs? Although I hope Mills gets to this level with his legs, but no more than this. Games are won from the pocket. Extending a drive or 2 a game with his legs is also sometimes necessary. In short with as little playing time as he's had, he's still learning. Matt Schaub 2? LMAO

Yep, with a lack of a running game, there were far to many 3rd and longs. Your QB isn't going to be running for many 1st downs unless your QB's name is Jackson and he cant stay healthy for a full season. (Understandably)

I don't know about bringing in that OT, but it couldn't hurt. In the least, it would add some camp competition. However, I think I'd prefer them to bring in that Center from Cleveland. We all know Britt is going to go out at some point, and even though I like Morrissey, I don't know if he is quite ready.

We can agree to disagree. I made it a point to focus on his play last year, and while he might be better than Scharping, he sucks
I honestly thought the edges played well. I didn't think the Texans needed to invest in a Tackle in this draft. I thought we needed two additions to the interior.

I'm willing to see Howard at Tackle. I remember him being very capable. I have no problem with Heck as a backup. He's strong, talented, & young. Still becoming what he will be.

Yep, Tretter would be an upgrade over Britt and we know Britt is unlikely to stay healthy all season.

When do you remember Howard being very capable for say a 10 game stretch?

That’s an interesting perspective.

I think this is a good thing to be looking for next year. Although it may not be the main focus see the development on Mills, it should be somewhere on the list.

I wonder how much he ran, or how little, can be attributed to Pep’s coaching? Since Mills how so few starts maybe they were coaching him to throw first and not run? Maybe they didn’t want to promote the habit to run every time he felt pressure like Carr? It is possible that played a role but I agree with you he needs to show he can run for a first down in today’s NFL.

I think having better protection and a running game to support him would help him look better and progressing. It would help him make better throws and open the field so he could run it when the opportunity presents itself.

I don't think that's been a big issue with Davis.

I remember watching Schaub & Keenum & saying, it's right there, just run & pickup the 1st down. Matt just wouldn't try. Case kept running backwards.

Regardless how many times Watson would run to pick up the 1st, I've always felt he left a lot on the field.

Mills, I just don't think there were a lot of opportunities.

Even if you bring this dude in, it’s not a guarantee that Mills won’t be running for his life. And you do know with that make shift line Mills wasn’t running for his life in those last five games

If you sign Reiff as a backup it increases the odds of the offense functioning properly. Do you think the offense functioned properly last year? I don't want to see this again next year.

Yes in the last 5 games the offense was solid but not great. Mills wasn’t hit that often in those games. Some people are dumping on Heck but he actually played solid in those games. The back up center was solid as well.

This is only Morrissey's 2nd year. He was a rookie last year. The Raiders really liked him, but he lost out on a numbers game to the veterans. The Raiders thought they could stash him on the practice squad, but the Texans grabbed him. I highly doubt this will be his last year, unless he just stinks it up.

Heck is an acceptable backup RT. He's not nearly as good as Reiff and probably never will be. Like I said before, hopefully Heck put in the work this off-season and improves this yr. You don't think the offense would function better with Reiff at RT than Heck?

Neither is going to play until Howard is ruled out.

I don't see the point in bringing in an 11 year vet to play backup. I want my backups to be young & developing. We've got Heck, we've got Deculus,

We've signed Ogbuehi... that's enough old guys.

I like young guys to develop, I actually lke Streckler as a developmental more than Heck/Deculus. I dont want Ogbuehi on the team.

When will we learn it’s not about what we want. If dude earns a position on this 53 man roster. He’s earned it.
We should want the best product possible on the field every year. But you're right we have no say in this. It's going to be kinda hard for Reiff to make the roster when he's not going to be on the team. Even though if they added him he would be an upgrade over the current backups.
