Texans random thought of the day

It will have to be a reversal, where everything the Texans touch turns to gold.

Wake me up when that happens. Until then, I'll continue to dream.
You might not have seen it but a while back I announced that the Kirby curse has officially ended.
I'm not claiming responsibility for ending it, just making the announcement.
It is done

I totally I get that but in my opinion at least the poison is out of the body. It will still take a long time to recover 100% but snake is gone.

I have no idea if all the poison is out or just a drip.

But it’s a new day. & while I don’t trust any of these clowns as far as @Speedy can throw them, I’m rooting for the 52 poorbastids that makes it through training camp.

I’ve got no reason. None that will make sense anyway. But…

This is the way

HOUSTON — Pharaoh Brown exploded onto the scene for the Houston Texans as a late acquisition during the 2020 season.

He played in eight games and established himself as a reliable target for former quarterback Deshaun Watson by catching 14 out of a possible 16 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

Who, if anyone, could you see being a candidate to receive a contract extension during or shortly after the season?

This is an interesting and timely question, since Caserio shared more about his roster management process in a Thursday morning interview with Sports Radio 610’s “Payne & Pendergast.” Caserio said he tries to evaluate the roster in two-year windows when it comes to fitting players within the team’s salary cap. If you look too far ahead, Caserio said, there are just too many moving parts and “you start to talk yourself into circles if you’re not careful.”

Caserio has committed to that two-year window. Since Caserio was hired in January 2021, the only non-rookie he’s signed to a contract larger than two years is punter Cam Johnston, whose three-year, $8 million deal expires after the 2023 season.

Brandin Cooks signed a two-year extension. Tunsil and safety Eric Murray both restructured their contracts under new two-year terms. Collins, center Justin Britt, cornerback Desmond King and linebacker Christian Kirksey all re-signed under new two-year deals. Hughes, Addison, right guard A.J. Cann, cornerback Steven Nelson, linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin and running back Dare Ogunbowale all signed two-year contracts in free agency. Even Caserio’s trade for linebacker Blake Cashman falls within that window, because his contract expires within two seasons.

Everyone else is either still playing on their rookie deal or signed a one-year contract. And, as we transition toward answering your question, a few important rules to note from the league’s collective bargaining agreement:

1. Teams can’t enter negotiations with a veteran within 12 months of the player’s last contract negotiation. If it’s the first time the player is entering a contract negotiation, it can take place at any time.

2. Teams can’t enter negotiations with someone they drafted until after the final regular season game of their third contract year. For undrafted free agents, a team can’t enter negotiations until after their second contract year.

So, let’s say Greenard takes a significant step in 2022 and breaks the 10-sack threshold, which no Texans player has done since J.J. Watt in 2018. Even if Caserio wanted to enter negotiations to secure Greenard beyond the 2023 season — and he’s said he’s open to in-season negotiations — he’d by rule have to wait until after the Texans play the Colts on Jan. 8, 2023.

Tytus Howard, who just finished his third season, is now eligible for a contract renegotiation. Caserio could begin negotiations with Houston’s 2019 first-round pick at any time, although since he already exercised the fifth-year option that keeps Howard under contract through 2023, it’s more than likely he’d want to see how Howard plays a full season at right tackle before making any further commitment.

Say Howard thrives this season. That would then create an interesting offseason situation in which Caserio would have to consider how to handle negotiations with both Howard and Tunsil, whose contracts both expire after 2023. Could the Texans afford to extend both? The franchise’s salary cap is on track to balloon to $45.8 million in 2023, then a league-leading $187.9 million in 2024, according to Over The Cap.

Tunsil, who signed a three-year, $66 million contract in 2020, will be eligible for renegotiation in March 2023 (12 months after his recent restructure) and will likely require a higher price than Howard. But if they both show they can be a solid duo on the offensive perimeter, Caserio would have to weigh whether he’d want to choose one or both, and, if it’s just one, whether he’d want to re-sign Charlie Heck, who started in 13 games last year, as a replacement or pursue a premier tackle in one of the next two drafts.

Caserio executed two in-season contract negotiations last year. He signed cornerback/return specialist Tremon Smith and running back Rex Burkhead to one-year deals. Both players fulfilled positions of need in which there weren’t many players returning. Both players resembled the culture Caserio wanted to build. Wide receivers Chris Conley and Phillip Dorsett could fit within that type of reasoning if either of them establishes a foothold in what will be a contract year for both of them.

But remember, this is a team that’s considered to have more talent off its roster than on it. They’ll have two first-round picks in each of the next two drafts, and Caserio will likely want to explore splurging on top-graded free agents once he has that kind of cash available. He could likely make affordable negotiations to retain one-year players like Okoronkwo, linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill, safety Jonathan Owens or running back Marlon Mack if need be, and it’s also likely those contracts wouldn’t extend beyond two-year windows either.

Still waiting on my call back… Taking the upcoming UBE bar in the interim. Mark my words, if a franchise does get me out of the player side of things, I will be a force of change. I have been working towards this for 25 years (8 year old started to dream watching the Packers beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI - a roster constructed by the -IMO- great Ron Wolf).

Texans Secret Plot to Sign Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo? C’mon
Why is there some sort of "top-secret'' Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo acquisition supposedly on the verge of happening?
The Houston Texans have said and done all the right things in cementing their commitment to Davis Mills.

So why is there some sort of "top-secret'' Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo acquisition supposedly on the verge of happening?

The Texans have nowhere to go but up after a frustrating 2021 campaign that saw them finish 4-13. In an attempt to "go up,'' general manager Nick Caserio and the Texans have made some major changes this offseason, including hiring a new head coach, Lovie Smith, and implementing a new culture in the franchise.
What's remained the same? Texans quarterback Davis Mills, who says the team is buying into what Smith is selling.

“We’ve brought in a lot of guys with a lot of experience,” Mills said at minicamp. “Everyone is really bought into what we’re trying to do out here. I feel like we’ve really set the standard for how we want to treat things around this building. I feel like we’re in a really good spot and we have a lot of good leaders on the team who are leading the team in that direction.”

As for Mills himself, he has also made substantial improvements throughout the offseason and heading into his second year.

Mills, of course, was one of the few bright spots for the Texans last season, throwing for 2,664 yards and 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 11 starts, with a quarterback rating of 88.8. A "bright spot'' - that's the way the Texans, having traded Deshaun Watson to Cleveland (making Mayfield expendable) insist they feel about Mills.

Are they lying?

That's what's being gently implied by ProFootballTalk.com's as-usual snarky report about the Houston QB situation. Writes Mike Florio: "Would they pursue Mayfield or 49ers quarterback Garoppolo if either or both players are cut? There has been no indication that they would — which means that they’re not interested. Or that G.M. Nick Caserio is doing his best to feign lack of interest until one or the other, or both, are free and clear.''

That's a huge "or'' but to our knowledge it is backed by no actual insight or information. On the surface, it simply seems like a way to shove two notable QB names into a headline ... or to perform CYA, in the odd event something like this occurs ... which is fine, as long as we find a way to concede that.

Otherwise? If PFT knows that the Houston Texans are prepared to bench Mills while acquiring a headline-grabbing QB? We'd encourage PFT to write the factual heck out of that story.

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
Really 6 players creating the most dead money this season.

Cost for cleaning up a really big mess doesn’t come cheap. 2023 should be a much nicer year from a financial standpoint, the infusion of more young talent via the draft, and if the time is right….some solid FA’s.

They will survive the big dead money hit in 2022 and come out of it in much better shape. I’m just hoping for an improved team going into the 2023 off-season.
Nowhere to go but up. Team isn’t tied to any particular player’s contracts and will have ample draft capital to take shots at adding difference makers. Hopefully the Texans have some rookies from this year’s draft that become building blocks for the rebuild.

As with the Rockets I hope that we stick to Young drafted players rather than seeking expensive vets in free agency. Use cap space to reward our own even if we rollover.
It took awhile but the Bengals seem to have finally found the right mix (which coincided with getting their QB). Though they have added some big ticket free agents to supplement their drafted players recently (Reader and Hendricksen on the DL, this year’s OL spending spree).

Yes they hit with round 1 and we may have round 3. That would allow us a jump with top pick in 2023 to go D again or trade down.

This is how you build a team. Draft your own and add pro bowl level talent in FA. Can you imagine adding 4 difference makers in the draft and a couple of pro bowl level guys in fa? This is how you rebuild quickly. Just gotta hit on Mills.

I agree with PFF. Sign Beasley, let Metchie ease into his role and also add competition at the position when Metchie is healthy enough to play. Beasley gives the team a reliable slot WR who can get open quickly. The team currently only has Cooks who has proven to be able to separate quickly. Competition and much-needed talent to aid in Mills’ development.

I’m hoping Dorsett can serve as that bridge SWR so Metchie has time to heal.

nah I feel Cooks, Conley and Collins can handle duties with Chris Moore getting a few more looks. His 227 yards @ 10+ and two TDs were interesting. Add the TEs and some plays called for RBs and Metchie has time to heal. I do not see reducing cap space for a WR who is short, mediocre and just turned 33.

He has flashed for a play here and there throughout his career, but he is a failed first round pick who played on three teams last season. And he has a history of foot/ankle injuries, most recently end of last season with the Texans.
I don't see Dorsett making it to game one. I would rather an UDFA get snaps.

Agree to disagree. Josh Allen certainly made use of him as a safety blanket. Davis Mills would do the same. If we’re talking about fielding the most competitive football team and there is a player at a position of need that could help do that then I say go get him. I think Beasley falls into that category as well as Lovie’s love of adding Texas natives this offseason.

I really liked how Lovie/Caserio overloaded at DE and CB this offseason because there was a glaring weakness. I wouldn’t mind seeing the offense get the same treatment when cap space is available to do it.

I keep seeing rumour articles that the Texans are seriously considering bringing in either Garropolo or Mayfield.

Hard to know where to stand on either of these as prospects who’ve been nearly-franchise level but with obvious flaws, I don’t see the point in bringing them in to be backups and would see it as the end of any hope for Mills to make it.

Good discussion and you had a point until you stated if we are talking about Fielding a competitive team. That is not happening in my opinion as we are simply building for the future and giving our youth the opportunity to mature and learn the system. Just my position but we do not know of any glaring weakness on the offense. As I mentioned tight ends and running backs can be the safety net for Davis Mills we don't need another one.

I agree with your final decision that neither are needed. For every article suggesting bringing in one of those two quarterbacks I see two that deny that should happen.
