All encompassing 2022 draft thoughts thread

https://www.nflmockdraftdatabase.com/big-boards/2022/consensus-big-board-2022

Have yall ever used this board ? Says it averages and updates the top boards every out there frequently. I still want Icky and Zion .... Icky with 3rd, trade down from 13 - about 10 spots for Zion and pick up another 2nd. Maybe grab Breece Hall or Kenneth Walker .... if they trade Cooks, grab Sky Moore or Christian Walker .... remember our last game ? .... puttin points on the board is exhileratin' ! If Tunsil is still, well .... Tunsil, we can unload $18 mil. in the next year, and move Icky and Zion to the left ! Maybe Max and Charlie benefit from George Warhop ! You know he and Pep had to watch a bunch of film, before they so boldly stated that we're going to be much more aggressive in our OL Blocking ! AHH .... I can see it all unfolding now .... come with me to the dark side .... drift toward the dark .... it's offense ! Come .... Drift .... Visualize .... It Could Work !!! Young Frankenstein

Improving the trenches on both sides of the ball.

003: DE- Kayvon Thibodeaux (OR)
013: DT- Jordan Davis (GA)
037: DT- Travis Jones (CT)
068: LG- Lecitus Smith (VA Tech)
080: RG- Jamaree Salyer (GA)
205: TE- Jalen Wydermyer (TX A&M)
207: RT- Andrew Stueber (MI)

Speeding Up the DB’s:

107: FS- Nick Cross (MD)
108: SS- Markquese Bell (FL A&M)
183: CB/KR- Marcus Jones (HOU)

Do-It-All Big Back:

245: RB- Zander Horvath (Purdue)
**6-2 @ 228 lbs / 225 lb Bench: 31 Reps / 4.57-40 On Freezing Day - Projected Closer To A 4.48-40 / Stud Blocker / Solid Receiver Out of the Backfield / Good Vision As Runner / Read up on this RB and he’s got the mental makeup and desire to do whatever is necessary to make it at the next level. This is a tough football attitude that does great things if he makes the cut.**

How would you feel about a draft like this

Neal
Davis
Williams
Armour- Davis
Austin
Woods
Pierce
Jobe
Melton
Teague

I like it but, this is a very good OL draft. We can likely get a very good starting OL player of any position in the 3rd. From what I have read, it is that good of an OL draft. Freeing up #3 for something else. Be it a trade for more picks or an Edge. Not seeing a DB taken at 3.

There's some good OT's in this draft. After the 1st four though it's kind of a crapshoot. Give me BPA with the least chance of busting. That's Neal, when you try to get cute, that's when mistakes are made.

That's because they used a short passing game for the most part and Mills got rid of the ball quickly. (I know about Mills throwing well 20 + yds down field.)

They also need to be able to run the ball at the GL and on 3rd and short. A guy like Pierce/Robinson/White/ Teague would help with this.
That’s the name of the game now, every team is doing this. Hit them with the short / quick stuff and then down deep.

There is difference between finding a “starter” that the team will be trying to replace and a quality impact core player. The chances are higher at the top of the draft when you get your pick of the litter.

Looking at late round options in the secondary:

I see Josh Jobe’s name coming up as someone who’s draft stock has fallen. I have seen him mocked between round 3-6. If he had entered the draft last year and not played through a turf toe injury he would most certainly be a day 2 pick as his floor. Starting CB Alabama has a workout 4/13 and is not expected to test well coming off surgery for toe.

32 5/8” arms, physical in run support. The only the thing missing to peg him as a Lovie Smith CB is the ball production. But Lovie has proven that he can teach players how to take away the football. If he does indeed fall to one of the 6th round picks he is an outside CB with starter upside.
I’d like to take Sauce at 3 then snag Tariq Woolen in the 3rd. 2 big CB’s.
I mocked Sauce and Johnson but ended up with Trevor pinning at 13 due to needing to replace laremy tunsil in 2023. I just don't see any good offensive tackles in that draft. If we get an extra round 2 in a trade down I like
Cameron Thomas 71 tackles 20.5 for loss 10.5 sacks. I still think that Sam Williams with Mississippi May fall to round 4. No one has him top 100.
I have that in my mock.

There are 6 contenders that teams will target in the QB stakes: Malik Willis, Carson Strong, Kenny Pickett, Matt Corral and a dark horse, Desmond Ridder. Sam Howell may also be in the mix but three of these will slide into round two or the back end of 1.
Lions, Panthers, Falcons, Seahawks, Steelers and Saints and Washington with a possible later round taken by Texans.
So there are seven teams that could conceivably make moves in this draft for a signal caller.
We have seen an early shot across this drafts bow by Saints already who now own two mid 1st picks in a trade with Eagles. This may be preparatory to another move either on or before draft day.
It will be interesting to see if teams want first bite of the QB cherry and trade with Lions or Texans. Or Jags?
This draft is going to be a wild ride and I think Carstereo is going to be in the thick of it.
It's pretty certain that the Panthers at 6 are going to take a QB - probably Willis. I also think that N.O. traded for that extra 1 so they can move in front of Carolina to take him. The Texans would be the most logical trade partner with N.O. since we are in prime position and have a history and good working relationship with them (Ingram, Roby).
I would not hesitate to trade #3 for #16 and #19 - giving us picks 13, 16 and 19 in the first round and 12 total picks. We would still have 9 picks and could use some of the later round picks to move back up for higher rated prospects.

While I wish this would happen, why would be the likely trade partner versus NYJ or NYG? NO wouldn’t have to give up as much to trade with one of those 2 teams.

We could possibly get their #49 if we included #107

If I was Caserio I'd jump all over the opportunity to draft at 16 & 19 instead of just the #3 overall in this Draft.
How many really elite players are in this Draft ? Not many if any, but it's a deep Draft.

3. Houston Texans
Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame

I'm not worried about the underwhelming 40-yard dash times he posted at the combine (4.59) and his pro day. Hamilton has rare versatility and traits for a safety, and he'd be an instant-impact player on the back end. Houston needs help everywhere, but considering it tied for the second-most yards allowed per play in the NFL last season (5.9), defense jumps out.

Well I'm worried about the underwhelming 40 time because it's my teams pick you are talking about fool !
Oh please, please don't draft this slow-azz safety with that very valuable #3 overall, instead just use one of those third-rounders to draft a really big but slow CB, or a small but fast LB to play safety.
One of the unwritten axioms of the NFL in the 21st century is drafting speed to play defense whether it's an edge guy or somebody for the defensive backfield. C'mon they are even raving about speed for D-lineman, e.g. the GA NT.
How about This Guy to play Safety?

Even if the Texans aren't interested in Stingley, going in the top 12 would leave one extra prospect on the board @ #13. So win-win for the Texans.

I knew Stingley was going to test great. I know his injury history, but man it would so tempting to pick him. He's a great talent.

Wanna improve the pass defense? Draft Sauce #3 Stingley#13 and Williams #37. Re-sign Taylor at DT and draft a DT late in the draft like they did with Lopez.
.
Defense would look like this

Greenard/Collins/Taylor/Williams

JMR/Kirksey/KGH

Sauce/Thomas/Stingley

King/Brooks/Draft Pick

That's a young fast defense.

Spend the rest of the draft on the offense. Then add even more to the offense in the 2023 draft

I was thinking how crazy it would be to just go big and take Sauce and Stingley back to back. Man that would set off the media.

People have started talking about Stingley quitting on the team pre injury.

After thinking about this, I think I would take the risk.

And build out the ol/skill positions in rds 3-7..

Then continue to build out the offense in the 2023 draft. This would require 2 more yrs of commitment to Mills, if you missed on rd 3-4 picks.

A very possible Texans mock:-
#3. Ahmed Gardner CB.
#13 Jordan Davis DL.
#37 Jaquan Brisker S.
#68. Jamaree Salyer or Max Mitchell OL.
#80. John Metchie WR.
#107. Kyren Williams RB.
#108. Jeremy Ruckert TE.
#183. Justin Shaffer G.
#245 Bpa.
This draft would be exciting.
With Sauce and Brisker added to the backfield and Davis pressuring the QB, this Texans defense would receive a mighty boost and it is sorely needed with our defense being second worse in the league last year.
Mitchell is versatile and can push the current starters for a spot if Salyer is not there.
Metchie is an underated receiver who can run great routes getting separation - overshadowed by his #1 partner in crime.
Kyren Williams is a dangerous back with a filthy step and great hands.
Ruckert can also compete for a spot in the TE room.
Shaffer has been described as a bulldozer in the run game.
Bpa - take the best player on the board - injured or no.

Damn that defense would be a sight to see!

Extra picks are cool but you should tell us who you would draft with them. I want to evaluate the guys you take over what we could get at 3. Thanks

So could Sauce, Davis and Brisker - another way to get a serious upgrade for this bad D.
Davis gets pressure up front while Sauce and Brisker patrol the backfield.

From a personnel perspective….Texans “D” is lacking DL and Safeties. I know there are need’s everywhere on “D” and the team should be drafting BPA, but what if the Texans did this:

003: DE- Thibodeaux
013: DT- Davis
037: DT- Jones

A defensive line featuring these 3 and Greenard would help make any defensive backfield look competent.

I kinda like the idea.

After I looked into it, something about Thibodeaux, it gives me some concern. For a long time, he wore just a plain arm band near his left elbow. He then transitioned to an elbow sleeve. Just a while back he started wearing an arm brace. In the past, he has made a statement that the reason he wear it is that "it gives me strength and finesse." A large articulated brace like his primarily gives you elbow stability, it does not give you strength or finesse. It can limit you in several ways..........and it is only worn to support of potentially weak structures. The support can be for any of several reasons, but the most common is elbow ligament damage.............most commonly the medial and lateral collateral ligament. He denies having had surgery that led to its need. He has done quite well so far, but those type of injuries are such that you worry about them for the future, especially if the structures that were damaged have not been yet addressed by surgery.

Just a thought to keep in mind.

By the way, in the picture below, he has added to his repertoire by also wearing a heavy wrist splint, signifying some sort of wrist injury/weakness.

With Cooks’ extension I don’t expect WR to be addressed unless its a late round pick. I’d like to see Bo Melton Rutgers or Kyle Phillips UCLA available with one of the 6ths for a potential slot WR option.

i think a Y TE will be added in the 3rd or 4th. If Texans want to play smash mouth football I suspect we’ll be seeing plenty of 2 TE sets.

But Skyy Moore in the 2nd would be tempting!
