How to fix Texans run game?

QB's who get hit enough usually begin to get, happy feet, anxious in the pocket, etc. By year four of their Texans careers, Carr was never going to recover from his abuse and Watson wound up having his best season ever. Watson was getting better while the team around him was getting worse.
Better and that lead to 4-12.

What you're basically saying is evrybody and everything else was the problem but Derrick. What I'm saying is Derrck was also part of the problem. Dont believe me, the Texans won just as many games without Derrick as with him this yr. Just like I predicted before the season started.

Luckily there will be GM's of QB needy teams out there who will view Derrick in the same light that you do and they will doom their franchises to mediocrity because of Derrick being paid like a top 5 QB when n reality he's a top 10-15 QB. I think this is a great thing and hope that Caserio can fleece a GM for a maximum return. However this doesn't look like this will happen before the draft this yr since the depositions on the civil cases dont start until February 22nd. This doesn't even mention the ongoing criminal investigations that very well could land Derrick in the slammer. Hopefully there will be an owner that's willing to make the trade before the draft that's willing to take the risk knowing that Derrick's cases are unresolved. But I cant really see this happening, can you?

In 2008, a Matt Cassell led Patriots went 11-5. Then the very next season, a Tom Brady led Patriots went 10-6.

So applying your logic... what does this say about Brady?

Everybody was at fault but Derrick.

That's like saying all 22 women are liars.

There seems to be a common theme in Derrick's life.
So you're saying the Texans team, as built in 2020, was good for 9-11 wins had Watson not been under center?

LOL

Talk about apples/oranges, but since you mentioned this you would think that a Jesus in Cleats could help his team win more games than the lowly TT/Rookie Mills combo.

Not really surprising since Brady was coming back from tearing his ACL.

I agree, comparing apples & oranges. Just as ridiculous as comparing 2020 & 2021 Texans.

Get some big, mobile o-linemen that will knock the snot out of the guys in front of them.
Get a big Y TE that will knock the snot out of the guys in front of him.
Get a big power RB that will knock the snot out of the guys in front of him.
Mission accomplished.
This x10000 our logo is a bull for gods sakes. Let’s run over some people. That’s the identity I want for this team. I want at least three OL from this loaded draft.

He was avg at best as a RT. He played 1 good game against the Titans at LT and some posters seem to think he's the anawer at LT. This is part of the anybody but Tunsil crowd at LT. If Tunsil is traded and I'm not against trading him, then LT is certainly going to need to be a high priority in this draft.

The way I see Tunsil is that the OL sucked last yr. Tunsil is the best Texans OL and he protects the QB's blindside very well. I dont think on a bad OL it's a good idea to trade your best OL and hope you can draft somebody that can eventually might be as good as Tunsil. I do understand the bean counters point of view, but right now the cap isn't an issue and wont be for a couple of yrs.
I think they’ll trade down and try and draft Chross.

I dont know, because he rarely stood in the pocket even when he had time. His 1st reaction when his 1st read wasn't open was to scramble out to his left and either throw a deep ball or take off running.
This year you are claiming there is a lack of talent on the OL and the Texans should move on from Scharping, Howard. Yet, Scharping, Howard and Nick Martin with a worst OL coach were good enough for Derrick.

What changed in 2021 that raise your awareness that the OL was a problem and why wasn't it a problem for you in 2020?

Howard was OK at RT.

Scharping has regressed

Martin was terrible from the day he was drafted. Look at yds rushing as a reason why the OL was better. Although those stts somewhat lie because Derrick was passing the ball most of the time.

I've had enough of the Derrick talk for tonight. I cant wait for the depositions to begin. Giving Buzbee 40 hrs deposing Derrick should provide for some great entertainment.

Agree 100% and at this point. It doesn't even make any sense. The OL isn't talented enough this year, but in previous years the same guys were talented enough and the QB was the problem. Consistently, inconsistent. The next four years are going to be a 180 degree change in perspective. I guess better late than never to understand that a QB needs a good OL to consistently stay in the pocket.

Talent is the biggest issue.

I dont care what scheme you use, Christian/Howard/Scarping/Heck aren't going to look good against top tier defenses.

As this process of hiring the new HC moves forward and Caserio asking Pep Hamilton to stand down on going to his lone interview…..I’m going to venture out and say the Texans will be running a variation of the WCO. The new blocking scheme will be Zone Blocking.

I’ve said on numerous occasions over the past few years that the Texans drafted OL personnel that would be ideal for a ZBS but the team wanted them to excel at a Power Blocking scheme instead.

Maybe a true ZBS would benefit Tunsil’s skill set much better as well as many of the current offensive linemen on the roster. If James Campen could successfully evaluate and coach up the line….maybe the Texans have to give the current personnel an opportunity in a new scheme provided Campen feels like he has something to work with.

The Texans approach of drafting players out of position or scheme and trying to fit them into their ducked up schemes has yielded horrible results. Maybe the Texans draft a couple of quick but fast maulers to improve this OL.

If the team does make a hard move towards a ZBS….I think Tunsil, Howard, and Heck are tailored made for this scheme.

Maybe another top pick in this draft would be OC, Tyler Linderbaum (Iowa) since he could be the right guy for the OL and ZBS.

Slow down. We know Pep turned Carolina down, but don't know why. He probably doesn't think he's the man to save Matt Ruhl's job & is waiting for something a little more stable.

ZBS is not synonymous with WCO. If we do employ the WCO that does not mean we'll be any more or any less ZBS.

We did some ZB last season & the year before.

Yep, and there was regression.

I'm actually hoping Gannon is the hire now and that he brings in Munch to fix this crap.

Like your comments; as the HC interviews have progressed, I've begun to think the same. One thing I learned this past week (and I believe I'm remembering this correctly) is that although Campen has a rep as a great OL coach, his career in coaching has been as a ZBS coach. Also, I've not considered Linderbaum as a pick because of his size. This changes with a ZBS; he's a great selection in this scheme.

I agree that the Texans decision for their HC'ing job should effect the way we draft.

This past week I've been using PFF's Top 150 Prospects. Their highest rated RB is listed at 53 overall. The next RB, at 62. And the 3rd at 76. There's 4 more listed at the bottom of the 3rd round. There's going to be a lot of RB's available on the third day.

Steelb, I'd be OK taking Neal at #3, but if our goal remains upgrading the OL, I still believe there's too much value in trading down, in both the first and second rounds, and there is still value in the OL'men prospects at the lower draft positions. If we can trade down we should.

I'd like for the GM to know what he wants to run & finding coaches that fit his vision.

At the same time I'm happy Caserio is shaking several trees.

But I hate to think last season was a waste of time.

ZBS is more often than not associated with WCO’s. It also helps that the Texans have James Campen as their OL Coach who’s known for being a strong ZBS coach.

Under Shanny, Gibbs used to coach the oline and rb. He was instrumental in choosing the type of runner and ol players no matter your talent. Campen probably could do the same for the most part.

I'm thinking Jeff Wilson is a FA and he's pretty scheme diverse. Should be able to get him cheap in FA too.

Late rd RB's that I like are Ingram and Ebner. Both would add value to the RB room.

The Bengals showed yesterday that winning the turnover battle, plays a huge role in winning games. Just ask the Texans when they were in Nashville. BTW, the Texans don't have a good OL or running game. How'd that work out for them?

You don't really want your QB getting beat to death even if his able tough guy through it. The Bengals had a couple of dude including Burrow who can make special plays and a defense good enough to get turnovers and key stops. Even with those in place 9 sacks is losing deal more times than not.

Their defense and special teams played well in Nashville - ring a bell? ;)
Still, you don't want your QB taking all that punishment.

You'd have to get Wilson on the cheap (vet minimum) because the guy can't stay on the field. RBs under 200 lbs don't have a long shelve life. Again, just go with young guys with tread on the tires.

Good thing Mixon/Perine can catch the ball out of the backfield.

I'm a big Joey B fan and hope he can survive this season so they can get him some help on he OL. If I was Brown I would tell Tobin to trade 1-32 and a 3rd for Tunsil. Then draft the best OG I could in the 2nd rd. Gotta protect the franchise, I mean how many ACL surgeries can Burrow take before it starts affecting his career and shorten his career.

Wilson is a UFA, but the Texans could give Wilson a big enough contract to get the Niners a 6th round comp pick in a couple of years.
That would entail restricting the number free agents the Texans sign to even qualify for compensatory picks and having having enough dudes somebody wants. Right now both of those are at issue.

Agreed, I could live without getting a couple of late rd draft picks if it means Caserio could bring thse guys in. BTW, I think a few Texans FA's will be signed so the Texans wont be really losing much.

I still would love it if Caserio could poach Wilson and Dwelley from the 49ers. Another TE that I like alot in FA is Blake Bell from the Chiefs. Both of these guys would be upgrade, particularly in the blocking part of the game.

I meant the Niners would get the comp pick in this scenario.

I think signing a UFA to a $2 million - $2.3 million AAV deal will qualify for a compensatory pick. The Texans signed 9 last year for $32 million. I think it will be less this offseason.

I got confused here. and only 9 the Texans signing went against the comp formula interesting.

Build the OL and draft a top-flight RB. Our current coaching staff isn't good enough to draft late-round guys and have them become dominant like the Kubiak era. Draft a 2nd or 3rd rounder and let them rip.

So Jonah Williams ain't working out huh? Getting sacked only affects the weak minded qbs. Big Ben, Rogers, Wilson, have all been high sack guys and they've won rings. Mahomes takes sacks as did Allen and Watson and it didn't affect them. High end qbs can negotiate those sacks because they make plays. David Carr takes sacks because he's wilting under pressure.

Did you even watch the game? He not only got sacked 9 times. He got hit hard several other times. In short he took a beating and if he keeps taking these type beatings his career will be shortened.

Yes, the Bengals ol sucks. Joey B is just really good and tough too.

There high sack totals like 4 game (which no team averaged this year) versus David Carr territory which didn't average nine sacks either. If the QB is getting sacked nine times that is a real problem for that guy long-term. That's not just a QB being tough, that career homicide.

The worst teams in the league average not quite 3.5 per game.
