Texans random thought of the day

Maybe he doesn't have a lot of options?
He's probably got about the same amount of options as Omenihu. Maybe even Roby.

I'm really looking forward to the next couple of yrs and I really hope Mills is a franchise QB. If he is, Caserio will be able to build this team and the media will have many words to eat. Not that they will do that.

If the File Clerk behaves in the same manner and displays the same irrational thought processes with trades and draft picks in 2022 as he did in 2021, the salary cap will be of little importance. Right now, the hinderance of the salary cap is just preventing him from making even bigger mistakes. The only thing we know at this point is the File Clerk has been very good at mismanaging the salary cap.
Speculation…..you’re claiming something that hasn’t happened yet. 2021 was a season in itself, with many actions done to accommodate two potential scenarios. 2021 is in the books and 2022 is in front of Caserio. The good thing, there will be no surprises or situations of the unknown this coming season. He’ll be free to move forward with his plan. I’m fully prepared to see how he handles the 2022 season.

I read it. Waving a magic wand that will make the salary cap all better is not so much my worry. A lack of a good fiduciary and irresponsible fiscal decisions are. Plain and simple, so far, since the Preacher Man and the File Clerk have arrived there has been a basket full of poor reasoning and flawed thinking. This flawed thinking has been evident in just about every area of player acquisitions, contracts and development. In regard to the article, I need to see more and further confirmation than just an opinion piece by an ad hoc reporter. That aside, it is still irrelevant because convoluted thinking is still convoluted thinking regardless of what the salary cap is or is going to be. The only thing we know at this point is the File Clerk has been very bad at trying to manage the salary cap. And we have seen nothing, nothing at all, that suggest this about to change. It's part of the File Clerk PROCESS.
LMAO, somebody writes a well thought out piece and you dismiss it. Shocking

Tell me if this is true or not? Will Mercilus/Roby/Cobb/Derrick/Cunningham be off of the books after next yr? Can Caserio trade Tunsil if he needs more cap space? Is the cap going to rise alot due to the NFL getting in bed with the gaming industry?

Answer those questions and I will fully get on board with your the Texans are going to be in cap hell.

Britt's a 31 year old center on bad knees, that started 2/3 of a season on the worst offense in the NFL. When they use the expression "Beggars can't be chosers", a picture of Britt is used as the beggar.

I said from the beginning that it would take 2 yrs to clear out the cap. Looks like this will be true. This is regardless of what he did with the cap last yr. Why do you think most of those guys Caserio signed were signed to 1-2 yr deals. It's part of Caserio's plan to have the cap cleared by next offseason.

You can say the same thing about Omenihu except Britt is a better player and Omenihu has better knees, but has had other injury problems himself. They're both the bottom 1/3 roster type guys but for different reasons. Britt is the better player when healthy, and has had the far more accomplished career. Neither are 16 game starters. Kinda like Amendola.

An even bigger problem is why Caserio made those bad deals in the first place. I still think Nick was trying to delude Kyle into thinking the team was improving. When it was doing nothing of the sort. If ownership can't come to terms that this is a long term rebuild, Caserio will have to continue with these wasteful signings.

I read the NYT piece that @CloakNNNdagger posted. And yes, the salary cap will continue to rise. But, whatever number that becomes is only relative to the other teams. If the money is equal, how is a losing team like the Texans going to beat out a contending team for a top free agent? That's why I have been harping on squeezing every dime of cap space now. While the team is rebuilding and not needing to spend big in free agency. No matter what the cap will become, the Texans will need more than their competitors. Pissing away cap $$$ is a mortal sin for a NFL franchise.

The answers to all of your questions are salary cap mismanagement. It's taking two years because of salary cap mismanagement. All those guys signed to 1- or 2-year deals were a direct result of salary cap mismanagement. I've already shown you how the File Clerk could have increased available salary cap by $48MM by cutting some players and trading one, instead of restructuring every contract he could.

Plain and simple, cutting players saves money, restructuring contracts cost money. You do know that when you restructure a contract the player gets that money up front when the restructure is signed. When you trade or cut that player, he leaves with money in his pocket that he wouldn't have ordinarily received. Terrible flawed thinking. Where is Chris Olson??

I'm making my claims based on history and known patterns of behavior. You're making yours's on hope, wishful thinking and a magic wand. Hoping, wanting and wishing it to be true, even though you have nothing to support those desires.

"There will be no surprises or situations of the unknown this coming season" - now there is some speculation to go along with all that hoping, wanting and wishing.

Will the cap be clean after next Yr?

Also, what did the Texans win in the 17 yrs with Olson's cap mgmt?

You still don't get it. I'm not sure you ever will. CHRONIC IRRESPONSIBLE MONEY DECISIONS, IS BAD MANAGEMENT.

So, we're going to have another $100 million to spend. Whoopie! Hey, let's give it to Bernie Madoff to invest for us.
One season and chronic shouldn’t be used in the same sentence. It sounds a bit over the top as in the extra serving of drama. You have zero proof of what Caserio’s 2nd season will bring…..other than the team is rebuilding and you’re heavily speculating. Take a deep breath and sit around for the 2022 and 2023 show….if it fails to live up to your expectations, there’s 31 other franchises to get excited about.

Insurance for what? A 5 win season rather than a 4 win season? Caserio needs to stop wasting cap space on aging vets while this team is rebuilding. A backup center should be a player on a rookie contract, or vet minimum.
….and what amount of money has Britt demanded he be paid for another 1 year contract? Based on his 2021 season I doubt Britt has it in his mind that he’ll be a starter in 2022 unless injuries hit a team. Someone will sign him in the hopes he can give them “x” amount of games at a veteran’s minimum.

Hopefully that team is the Texans.

Linderbaum is the only center I want in this draft.

It wasn't the one season; it was the dozens of flawed decisions in that one season that qualify as chronic. As in repetitive, pattern of behavior, recidivist.

Now it is possible that the File Clerk can do a complete 180. I too was once addicted to the Hokey Pokey but fortunately for me I was able to turn myself around.

I know it's hindsight, but if not for RS/OB trading for DW4 & Tunsil, Texans could have had Tredavious White or TJ Watt, Bradley Chubb or Quentin Nelson, Josh Jacobs, Patrick Queen, and Kyle Pitts or Jamarr Chase

FML :toropalm:
More like we’d be complaining they passed on Tredavious White or TJ Watt, Bradley Chubb or Quentin Nelson, Josh Jacobs, Patrick Queen, & Kyle Pitts or Jamarr Chase & drafted Erkle

Free agent after this season and you know NC is on it. Anyway he is filling for Whitworth but will make some $ in the off season
based on today's performance.

Once again the NFC West was the toughest division in the NFL & not really a big shocker the AFC South was the weakest division. The NFC West won 12 more games than our division.

NFC West | 40-28-0 .588 | 3 Teams above 500
AFC West | 38-30-0 .559 | 3 Teams above 500
AFC North | 35-32-1 .522 | 2 Teams above 500
AFC East | 34-34-0 .500 | 3 Teams above 500
NFC South | 34-34-0 .500 | 2 Teams above 500
NFC East | 32-36-0 .471 | 2 Teams above 500
NFC North | 30-37-1 .448 | 1 Teams above 500
AFC South | 28-40-0 .412 | 2 Teams above 500

I ranked the divisions by win percentage. In case of a tie I used the number of teams above 500 as the tie breaker.

The league really is close to parity. There were 3 divisions above 500, 3 divisions below 500 & 2 divisions at 500.

Watching the Bills vs Chiefs game. I couldn't help but reminisce about the 2018 playoff where the Texans beat the Bills and were up 24-0 on the Chiefs. I'm watching two young QBs playing a similar style of ball as Watson and throwing the ball all over the field. It was another reminder of how Watson, O'Brien, Easterby and the McNairs really screwed this fan base and the gap that now exist between those franchises and the Texans.

Random thought. Seeing how far the Texans have fallen since the 2018 season, can anyone recall another team and/or player who imploded in such a similar self-destructive fashion?

51-7 and Derrick being the special kind of person he is.

The Oilers a Moon lead Oilers team lost the biggest lead in playoff history and then a Moon lead team blew another game at home against a Montana lead Chiefs team and 2 yrs later they were run out of town.

Here's another pointless stat. The Chiefs at #2 are the highest seed left. They were also the only home team to win in the divisional round.

The seeds left in the tournament:

Chiefs #2
Rams #4
Bengals #4
49ers #6

It kind of makes me wonder just how much a first round buy is really worth. At least this year not much.

Boy, I’m relieved to know that ST’s, the defense, nor coaching had anything to do with that Chiefs comeback. Still trying to figure out how the offense gave up 51 points. Anyhow, I’ll watch the game.

And the Chiefs lost to the Titans (out), the Bills (out), and the Bengals (TBD) all in regular season. Outscored by like 90 something to 50 something.

And the Tacks had to be the worst #1 seed in a long time.

I believe I've said many times that it was a total team collapse. For some to just blame only BOB on that collapse isn't right. Sure he was probably the main reason for the collapse and he should've been fired. But the leadership on that team amongst the players was lacking too. Derrick played a big part in that loss also. When times got tough the South Carolina/Clemson trash folded like a cheap tent.

How many times did Watson have 2nd/3rd and short yardage situations in that game? The lack of a running game and horrible play calling can really adjust how a DC approaches a game or adjusts after halftime. Texans coaches just never seem to adjust their established plan if it’s not working.

McClain: Texans are in better shape for next coach
John McClain, Staff writer
Jan. 24, 2022Updated: Jan. 24, 2022 6:33 p.m.

No matter who is hired as the fifth coach in franchise history, the Texans are much better off compared to this time last year.

First-time general manager Nick Caserio inherited a deteriorating team crushed by dreadful personnel decisions, and he was assigned by the McNair family to clean up the mess created by Bill O’Brien and Jack Easterby.

Caserio hired David Culley to coach a team coming off a 4-12 record, a team without first- or second-round draft choices and suffocating under a pile of salary cap issues and a dreadful lack of talent at too many positions.

To make the situation even worse for Caserio and Culley, the Texans’ two best players — quarterback Deshaun Watson and defensive end J.J. Watt — desperately wanted out.

Watt asked for his release, and the McNairs granted his request. Watson, of course, is still on the payroll and about to see his base salary skyrocket from $10.54 million to $35 million. Caserio is hoping to trade him before the draft for a surplus of picks. (But any deal is held up pending the resolution of the 22 civil suits against Watson for sexual misconduct.)
The Texans had no quarterback to replace Watson and no pass rusher to replace Watt.

When the new league year began in March, Caserio went to work on the roster, tearing it down and trying to build it back up knowing it would be longer than a one-year process. Caserio brought in so many new players they had to wear name tags.

The Texans won as many games under Culley as they won in 2020 under O’Brien and interim coach Romeo Crennel. Caserio and Easterby fired Culley after the season, and now the hunt is on for the new coach.

Whether it’s Josh McCown, Brian Flores, Jonathan Gammon, Joe Lombardi, Kevin O’Connell, Hines Ward or another candidate, the new coach will be in a much better place than his predecessor.

Let’s start with the draft. After making trades, Caserio ended up with five selections. Quarterback Davis Mills, receiver Nico Collins, tight end Brevin Jordan, linebacker Garret Wallow and defensive tackle Roy Lopez all showed promise as rookies.
The Texans have nine picks this year, including their first- and second-round selections, and 19 over the next two drafts. That’s the most over a two-year period since the expansion years of 2002-03.

Ugh!! I really wish we'd stop this nonsense. Collins was one of the worst receivers in football, Jordan didn't suit up for 7 weeks, Gallow couldn't get on the field, and Lopez was among the leaders in missed tackle percentage.

Maybe they have something decent in Mills, maybe Jordan too if they get an OC in here that knows how to use TEs, and maybe they all raise their games going forward, but other than that, what promise was shown this year? It wasn't there. Don't give me the "he showed flashes" BS either. Keke Coutee showed flashes. Charles Omenihu showed flashes. Keyshawn Martin showed flashes, and on and on and on.

Are you saying Mills/Collins/Jordan aren't talented or cant improve their games. Wallow/Lopez too for that matter? I think Wallow's ceiling is a very capable backup and core ST's guy. But he can run and is a solid tackler, so he could become more.

Collins started off fairly well for sitting out football for a yr. Then in game #2 got hurt. Missed a month and seemed to be improving over the last month of the season. Plus Cooks seems to think Collins has real talent. I think I will take Cooks talent evaluations over PFF's.

BTW, Did you see where PFF had the Cowboys OL rated as the #1 OL in the NFL? That says all that needs to be said about those numbers geeks. You can make numbers say anything you want them to say. I thought everybody already knew this but I guess not.

Not to mention the Texans had (8) 2021 draft picks and used (2) 2022 draft picks, a total 10 draft picks, to draft 5 players. When you're in a major rebuilding process this is taking several steps backwards. I don't know about you, but I expect there will be even more tomfoolery in 2022.

If they only draft 4 or 5 guys this yr I wont have a problem with it.

If the draft went something like this, I would be very happy

Rd.1 Neal
Rd.2 Pickens
Rd.2 Salyer Trading #68 and #115
Rd.3 #80 Goodrich
Trade two 6th's and a 7th to move up to the bottom of the 4th or top of the 5th and pick either J.T. Woods or Grant Calcaterra

I would be very happy to get the these players and have less picks.

How Tytus Howard graded out at LT | Daily Brew
Jan 25, 2022 at 12:11 PM
Deepi Sidhu

In a 4-13 season filled with injuries, COVID-19 and quarterback changes, Tytus Howard emerged as a bright spot in an unlikely place.

Left tackle.

Entering his third NFL season, Howard likely expected to find himself lining up at right tackle, where he started every game for the previous two seasons. Instead, he bounced to the opposite side. After Training Camp presented by Xfinity, Howard was named starter at the left guard spot but moved to left tackle in Week 12.

"He was heading into the season with him, and LT (Laremy Tunsil) were going to be the best tackle duo, and they might have been, but then LT gets hurt," OL Justin Britt said. "He gets asked to move to left guard and that was not that much of a learning curve for him because he's played left tackle before. He just had to find his rhythm there. He finds his rhythm. He's playing pretty good ball, and then they ask him to move to left tackle, which I thought he did exceptional. He's a hard worker. He's still young. He's got a lot of football left in him. I don't see why he couldn't be the best."

Despite never starting in the NFL at left tackle until Nov. 28 against the New York Jets, Howard seemed at home back at the tackle position this season. From Weeks 12-14, Howard earned an 87.7 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking second among tackles and fourth among all offensive linemen with at least 150 blocking snaps during that span. Howard finished as PFF's highest-graded pass-blocking tackle among the four weeks he started at left tackle with a grade of 89.9.

"This kid does everything you ask," OL Coach James Campen said. "He tries things, been very flexible. We've been very fortunate that he's able to step into guard, step out of tackle at a hiccup's notice and credit to him, he's a very smart kid. I mean, heck, he could tell you all five positions and probably the tight end position on the team. He's very smart. He's a cerebral kid that learns very quickly, and I just think he's just gotten better every single week."

THE REST OF THE STORY
Howard is a good pass blocker...but thus far he lacks the nastiness of someone like Duane Brown during his Texans tenure. The same really goes for Tunsil. With either Howard or Tunsil, we still need a RT and LG/RG that can maul people in the run game. Howard just hasnt displayed the nasty disposition necessary to play anything but LT (and even then, Id rather have a warrior there).
