I’m not going to liter Texans Talk with Justin Herbert JH10 so starting his own thread in National Football league forum. Tom Telesco selected Herbert #6 overall in the 2020 draft as the Chargers made decision to move on from much beloved Phillip Rivers, who never had a good offensive line to protect him.

Despite no training camp, due to covid, very little work with the 1’s, reportedly, due to a Medical blunder week two before the game with KC Chiefs (Tyrod Taylor, now starting Texan QB, lung was punctured trying relive pain to his rib cage). Herbert was told minutes before the game, he would be staring against the Super Bowl Champion.

Rest you could say is now history. Herbert won offensive rookie of the year honors and reset about every rookie passing record. Overcoming poor play calling and OL that ranked last in the NFL. Long story short, Chargers fired Head Coach Anthony Lynn and went on exhausting Head Coaching search of their own, surprising most by taking defensive minded, Brandon Staley, who Vegas odds are, as of today, shortest of any Coach to win NFL Coach of the Year, 12:1.

In Free Agency, TT (Tom Telesco) revamped the OL starting with former Packer and Aaron Rodgers Center, Corey Lindsay. Then he added two highly graded, PFF, OG’s Oday Aboushi (Detroit) and Matt Fieler (Pittsburgh) to flank him while selecting LT Rashawn Slatter in the first round. Everything is being built-out around centerpiece, Justin Herbert to ensure he reaches potential that everyone seems to think, the sky is the limit.

JH 10 has his 4th/5th playbook to learn in as many years now it’s going to be the Saints system with a mix of Green Bay and Shanahan 49ers under the guidance Joe Lombardi. Herbert will not only need to learn it but assimilate then make it his own. Leaving with this quote that caught my attention:

“His forearms and hands look like he has been digging fence-post holes his entire life.” -Drew Brees

FYI, Herbert is having a rough go of it as well. Training camp edge around the league is usually defensive. Plus they also know the playbook so it’s not like anyone will be caught off guard, however on plays they should know better, if beaten, it’s usually one of two things, lack of effort/concentration or superior athletic ability. They also have a 3rd rd WR Josh Palmer who is working his ass off to be the #3 behind Mike Willams and Keenan Allen.

As a diversion away from non-football talk, Peter King visited Chargers training camp and had an excellent interview, filled with Nuggets I just wanted to share. Even mentioned Texans as first interview for Head Coach, Brandon Staley. Herbert is mentioned as a guy you accept job offer, just to coach and build around. Hope y’all just enjoy and entertained listening to actual football talk.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers fans got to see a little bit of everything during their first opportunity to view a practice at SoFi Stadium.

The Maine and The Offspring performed during a pregame concert, new coach Brandon Staley got his first time to go through a game routine, and Derwin James and Justin Herbert made big plays.

“I’m so glad that we did this because this is so much different than a training camp practice. I think that adjustment is real,” Staley said. “I’m glad our operation got going here, and I think that you saw the guys performed well today in front of our fans.”

Herbert had a solid day in front of nearly 34,000 fans as he continues to get up to speed with Joe Lombardi’s offense. The second-year quarterback often connected with new tight end Jared Cook and also had a 70-yard touchdown to Jalen Guyton. He also had TD passes to Cook, Mike Williams and Keenan Allen.

Josh Palmer, a third-round pick this year, also got plenty of snaps with the first unit.

Last year, the Chargers moved into SoFi Stadium, but fans were not allowed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Herbert said it was good to get out and run some game situations before the preseason games begin on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams.

“We had some good opportunities to go down and score. There were some good things, some bad things, but a lot of film to watch,” Herbert said.

Time for camp update. Preseason heading into next to last game. Listening to a podcast, new OC Joe Lombardi threw everything @ Herbert, going back to early Saints/Drew Brees era. He not only navigated and survived, he flourished. Corey Lindsey was also brought in to help teach and take on calling protections but Herbert wanted ownership of that too.

Here is Daniel Popper (Charger Beat Writer) summary of camp day 14 before joint practices with 49’ers-

Justin Herbert dealing

Quarterback Justin Herbert had one of his best practices of camp. His ball placement was particularly impressive, and he was regularly throwing receivers, tight ends and backs open. He finished practice 14-for-21 passing.

In seven-on-seven, Herbert hit Tyron Johnson with a third-down crossing route over the middle, beating the tight and physical coverage of rookie corner Asante Samuel Jr. He beat Samuel again in the first period of 11-on-11, delivering a perfect ball to Keenan Allen on an out route near the right sideline. Two plays later, he connected with Allen for a second time on the longest offensive play of the day. Allen was open, but Herbert put the ball in a spot that allowed Allen to run after the catch, and he split the two safeties with a burst of acceleration after making the grab.

In the next period, Herbert converted a third-and-short by finding Jalen Guyton in the middle of the field. Linebacker Kenneth Murray had dropped into coverage to defend against crossing routes. Herbert fired the pass with enough height and pace to clear Murray’s head, but enough touch to fit it into the intermediate window. This was a dime.

Later, Herbert found Allen again on a third down. Chris Harris Jr. was in great position in coverage. Herbert, though, read the leverage and threw the pass to Allen’s opposite shoulder, preventing Harris from making a play on the ball. On the next snap, Herbert completed an out route to Jared Cook near the right sideline, beating linebacker Kyzir White with a fastball on the outside corner.

I did not see a mistake from Herbert all practice. Of his seven incompletions, one was a drop by running back Austin Ekeler, another was a fine throw to the right sideline that would have been completed if receiver K.J. Hill had not stopped his route, and a third was a broken screen play.

Haven’t posted in awhile in regards to Herbert, least I mention he is blowing up LA. Can’t go anywhere without seeing his image, watching a highlight, or interview, billboard’s promoting Chargers as Herbert’s team. His story is straight out of Hollywood, literally, not much mention of the other team, Rams, one of the best teams in the NFC with shiny new QB, Matthew Stafford.

Hoping y’all will enjoy this article? It’s not just about Herbie it’s about his favorite target, Keenan Allen, whom if memory serves me right, drafted same year as DeAndre Hopkins. Remember expecting Texans taking WR round one, and if not for a slight meniscus tear. (Allen unable to workout)was in our draft conversations, but even I didn’t know how good he really was, Hopkins being far and away the preferred target in the first round. Unfortunately or fortunately for Allen as he slid to the Chargers in the 3rd rd. his talent preserved injuries to hook up with a promising new QB talent after Hall of Fame QB Rivers left town.

Ok, so there is that. Reason why I wanted to share this here and now, is to illustrate how important the relationship is between your franchise QB and #1 WR. It means everything. I’m not here to make excuses for anybody but trading Hopkins was like ripping family away from Deshaun Watson. Herbert would not have the same success without Keenan Allen. There is a bond between these elite players that is rare and beautiful to watch develop. Keenan is a precise route runner with great hands, he has the most third-down-conversion receptions of any receiver in the league since 2017 with 98. DeAndre Hopkins has the next most with 83. Allen led the league in this stat in 2020, with 28, in 15 games.

Enjoy the read.

Mike Williams was his preferred target Sunday. Although Allen still got a bunch of work.

This is a really dangerous team if they can stay healthy.

Herberts 2nd year regression, one year wonder and demise greatly exaggerated as he brought his team back to beat the Kansas City Chiefs and the Great Patrick Mahomes.

Justin leads the NFL in 3rd down conversions. That’s the only stat I’m going to focus on for now it’s the window into these results. Herbert called “advantage looks” into the Chargers’ RPO game. The Chargers have a run called at the line of scrimmage, but if Herbert sees one of his receivers in one-on-one coverage, he has the go-ahead to throw a quick pass on a slant, bubble or fade. Mental side is his true strength, media talks about his 6’6’ frame, his arm strength and accuracy. There is so much more to the process and it’s fascinating to watch him blossom in a system laser focused, coaches who trust in him and players who believe in him.

Quite possibly the most difficult early season schedule I’ve ever seen to deal with at the same time. Opening up in Washington, Rookie LT Rashawn Slater vs Reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the year Chase Young (0 pressures in 49 pass rushes). Then Dallas @ home, coming off last minute loss to Defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay with 3 extra days of rest and to prepare. This past weekend Conference match-up in KC. Monday Night against the 3-0 Las Vegas Raiders. Back to SoFi Stadium to avenge home opener loss against the Cleveland Browns, see how Slater holds up against Myles Garrett (4 1/2 sacks on Fields this past weekend). Last but certainly not least going to Baltimore to face Lamar Jackson’s Ravens.

Love me some Herbert and I'm looking for parallels in how Pep helped Herbert develop and how Pep's developing Mills. I can see some similarities in Herbert/Mills 1st games.

I’ve only watched Herbert vs Dallas & KC this year, so I may be very wrong about him. But how in the heck did he fall to the 6th overall pick?

I mean, yeah Lawrence played for Clemson & was in a special kind of spotlight week after week.

But dang, He’s got the size, the arm, the football IQ & he runs like a deer.

He has a gun. I didn’t realize how big he was. I kinda liked him coming out, but he had a funky throwing motion that turned me off…a throwing motion that it appears he doesn’t have anymore. I wonder if that was 1 of the things Pep and his qb coaches helped him with in his rookie year, but it doesn’t really look the same to me.

Either way, he looks really good and as long as he continues to develop I can see he and Mahomes evolving into the next great qb rivalry.

His intelligence is what will separate him. Nurtured by a brainiac head coach and longtime Brees QB Coach it’s a match made in heaven.
Like SteelbTexan says, Pep Hamilton was Herbert’s QB Coach his rookie season so mechanically, Mills should be good in this area as well. He throws a laser as well. Just going to struggle for awhile with processing, just takes time.

For the record, which could come as a surprise to some, I advocated using Watson as a trade piece in order to move up in the 2020 NFL Draft to pick him. My reasoning……I thought Herbert would be more in line with what OB wanted as a QB for his system and he possessed all the tangibles I liked in a QB.

I’m going to take back everything I ever said about you as being :homer:

I always naturally follow Oregon and felt compromised to stake my claim such as you did, props, although don’t think any of us then wanted anyone but Watson as our QB. Thing that’s really tricky about grading QB’s for a team is how they use and incorporate his strengths and build around him the pieces that ultimately make the team successful. That’s why O’Brian gave up so much to get Tunsil, I’m guessing. But it goes beyond that to the scheme fits, communication between coaches and players, then players to players. Hardest thing in the world to create the perfect storm.

Just wanted Texan organization and fans I’m no dumping them. First interview Texans had for new head coach was Brandon Staley before the Chargers. Only difference was they didn’t let him leave the building before agreeing to be their next head coach.

Have mixed feeling about Tom Telesco, Charger GM, not sure he’s much different than Rick Smith? But will say what look like draft busts under one coaching staff to the next head coach & staff can truly make the difference between boom or bust.

Lawrence(2021) and Herbert(2020) were in different drafts. Joe Burrow went #1 overall in 2020, coming off perhaps the greatest season a college QB has ever had.

Herbert's main concerns coming out were the gimmicky offense he was in at Oregon and questions about tentiveness and leadership. Those issues never arose in the NFL.

They said he struggled to read defenses, was too robotic, was quiet and not a leader etc...

Basically they're saying some of the the same thing that they're saying about Mills. Hopefully Pep can do some of the same things with Mills that he did with Herbert. Herbert/Mills talent level is comparable. IMHO

Just understand there will be growing pains.

The chargers team Herbert walked into wasnt a veritable wasteland talent wise either tho. 2 years prior to his arrival they went 12-4 under Lynn and most if not all of the guys making plays for them right now were on the roster then. They Had a down year in 2019 mostly b/c of injuries & 2020 Tyrod very well could’ve led them to the playoffs if it weren’t for the doc puncturing his lung.

Ekler
Allen
Williams
Guyton
James
Bosa

and a whole host of other players that are playing key roles for them now were on that 2018 roster. Herbert was literally the last piece.

Coaching miscues and injuries nullified any chance, even with Herbert’s stellar rookie performance, from downward spiral. Coach Lynn was fired for a reason.

Coaching importance cannot be understated. Staley’s effect on Telesco in 2021 draft is proof alone, but just as important, reclamation of players considered borderline busts. Mike Williams, 5th year option was picked up, great move now right? But before fitting into Lombardi offense, he was widely considered a bust and waste of 7th overall pick in 2017 passing on Christian McCaffrey. 2018 Derwin James, brilliant talent with injury red flags that proved true missing most of 2019 and all of 2020. Jerry Tillery, 2019 end of first, who has been a bust, didn’t even fit Gus Bradley 4-3 but now showing some progress (jury still out) in Staley’s 3-4.

Staley has adopted Sean McVay injury prevention program of limiting practices, based off player feedback and not using starters in pre-season. Bulaga is best test case for this, using kid gloves with oft injured tackle, with a ton of patience. So far he has played only 1st half of first game. Last year of his contract, but if he can contribute in any way on the field that would be a huge boost and bonus for OL.

Jury's still out on Staley. This is his 1st year as a HC & You see this often with 1st year HC's. They come in & their 1st year or 2, they look like they are unique and can really do some things, then the league starts to get ahold of tendencies, they start making some mistakes & they eventually flame out. Happened with their last HC Its happening with Frank Reich & Matt Nagy now...Chuck Pagano...I'll check back in on Staley in a few years.

Baldy used Spencer Tillman’s “smoke through a keyhole” reference…Thought I’d never hear anyone else say that.:spit:

OK. I have to admit it. Whenever I've heard Tillman say "Hell bent for election," I just thought he had misheard Hell Bent for Leather or was purposefully saying it wrong.

But I heard someone else say it so I looked it up... and it's an actual saying. There was even a movie in the 40's called Hell Bent for Election and that saying is an actual thing that means someone is extremely obsessed with doing something.

So I guess he had the bibliography and footnotes for that after all.

Like to share some analytics from Argent, a Bolt fan, contributor with PFF and Quilty as Charger podcast.

Analytics aside, this was Justin Herbert’s worst game as a Professional. Against the Ravens D he went 22-39 195 yards 1TD and 1INT. Davis Mills doesn’t have near the weapons or OL and his game stats against Indy were 29-43 243 yards no TD and 2 INT.

Anyone can have a bad game or game plan against a better prepared team. Anyone:drunk:

Justin Herbert is

4th in the league in total passing yards with 3,547

3rd in the league in TD passes with 27

Tied for 2nd in the league with Aaron Rodgers for plays of 40+ yds with 10

2nd in total completions with 315

3rd in attempts with 473

3rd in first downs with 176

11th in sacks taken with 25, tied with 3 others (Lamar Jackson is No. 1 with 37; Burrow 2nd with 36 aided by the 6 times he was sacked yesterday.)

Herbert's completion percentage remains at 66 percent. His QB rating has improved two pts to 98.2

We’ll see Thursday Night Football vs suddenly potent and lethal Chief defense but Herbert is climbing the QB stat ratings and from two consecutive losing seasons to 8-5 record and playoff contention.

Herbert finished 23-of-31 passing for 275 yards and three touchdowns. He did not have a turnover. Herbert is third in the league in passing yards (3,822) and tied for second in passing touchdowns (30). He is fifth among current starters in expected points added per dropback, according to TruMedia. He leads the league with five fourth-quarter comebacks, and his five game-winning drives are tied for first. He also has 268 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Herbert came to Houston and was routed, forcing two Interceptions into ill-advised coverage. As excited to see him and the Chargers they both disappointed. Good news for Texans who came out loose with no pressure and just hammered them like New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys just to name four more. Stats don't really tell the story, at all, as Herbert threw for 336 yards on 27 of 36 attempts. The Texans pass rush got to him too, as pocket collapsed, he had nowhere to go. Herbert only had 15 yards on the ground and only one of those, on a check down did he pick up any real yards (8). Not his worst game personally, but overall worst game next to the Ravens game where they were really smoked. Also feel the Texans offensive line played better than the Chargers. Mills was the better QB and never turned ball over, throwing 27 times completing 21 for 2 TD's and 254 yards. Great game plan and execution by the Texans, probably their best game I've ever seen in person. Thanks for hookup Steelbtexan :wesmantexanfan:

I just wanted to revisit this post and comment on what a great job Pep has done fixing Mills flaws, just like he did with Herbert.

This is hard for me to understand, given unevenness of performance as a team and player, but Herbert continues to break records for the Chargers. Was not impressive last week against the Texans, but still posted numbers and ball flight as was Mills, real pretty in person.

Yesterday against the Broncos Herbert threw his 35th touchdown pass of the season. He now holds the franchise record for the most passing touchdowns in a season, passing Philip Rivers, who had 34 in 2008.

Herbert finished 22-of-31 passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns. He has 4,631 passing yards on the season — third in the league. He needs 172 yards to break Dan Fouts’ single-season franchise record for passing yards.

Herbert is still a top NFL QB. So he had a bad game and the Texans won. He obviously didn’t let it knock him down b/c he came right back with a Herbert type of performance. Just for the record, I think it was steelb and myself that mentioned the Texans might be smart to package Watson in trade (before having to re-sign him) so they could move up high enough in the draft to pick Herbert. To this day….I still don’t know why OB held onto Watson, who I never felt matched what OB wanted in a QB, instead of moving up for Herbert who I thought would be the exact QB OB had been dreaming of.

Should have been... he had a bad game

You know who had a bad game, wasn’t Herbert, was Kenneth Murray, 3rd year ILB out of Oklahoma. He missed more tackles in key situations yet Staley kept him in the game. All way to OT when he called timeout to get K9 off the field for better run defender.

Herbert threw for 383 yards 3 TD’s 1 INT. He broke virtually every Charger passing record despite his receivers dropping ton of targets, bad performances from all. For the season Justin Herbert was 2nd in the NFL in yards 5,014 yards 38 TD’s, both Charger records.

Herbert was only reason Chargers were in the game. It was that last in the league, run defense that has allowed more 3rd down conversions than 31 other teams.

Staley will be successful but he didn’t inherit a very good defense and instead of asking Telesco for roster pieces, tried to work with what he had and it bit him in the butt. Now going into his 2nd offseason Staley/Telesco better take advantage of this defensive heavy draft and clean out the garbage (K9).

The head coach for the Chargers has as much to do with them being home as any player.

Just saying.

This game was a microcosm of the Chargers entire season. Brandon Staley will spend countless sleepless nights watching tape. If he can’t fairly evaluate his team, specifically his defense, they will continue to disappoint, underachieve and lose these type of games they are fully capable of winning.
