Should Mills be given the reins next season?

I don't see that happening, either. And @badboy should keep his trade proposals in his draft thread. But, rookie deals aren't as expensive as they once were. 3 picks in the top 10 could be signed. Signing the 3 guys to long term deals in 5 years, if they all hit? That's much tougher.
That’s what I mean. Long term that’s a massive fustercluck signing them.

Over 50% of first round picks are busts anyway so it may not be an issue. To bring it back on topic look at the QBs taken first round last year vs Mills. With the exception of Jones he’s beating all of them and nobody is asking if, for example, Lawrence deserves to be the starter. I still think people can’t get past him being drafted in the 3rd round with our first pick. He hasn’t made any worst mistakes than any other rookie QB and when you factor in everything, he’s actually doing really well.

Yet for some reason people still want to ride on the QB merry go round, even though they claim they don’t, and spend money and possibly draft capital to bring in career backup to compete for the job and maybe get 2 extra wins next year.

That’s sounds like so much fun. :sarcasm:

People on the Jacksonville board thinks otherwise. Some of them thinks he’s a bust. Some are saying he came into a F’d up situation just like we’re saying about Mills. Some are saying he’s not being utilized properly. Some are saying he should’ve sat out this season and learn behind a veteran quarterback.

That’s why some teams don’t wait until those rookie stars reach the end of their 5 year deal before getting them to the table to discuss a new contract. I just don’t get it as to why teams want to wait until the conclusion of year 5 before trying to sign a star player.

Look at the Derrick situation for your answer.

Also if you keep a QB on his 5th yr option it adds 1 more yr to not be cap strapped in the pursuit of a SB throphy.

The 2nd contract is typically a huge jump, for a team they lose the advantage of the rookie contract value if they start re-upping at 3 years.

Agreed, but then you've got teams that have really invested in their OL like Dallas/Browns/K.C./49ers/Titans etc... I'm of the thought that this team would look so much better if they invested a couple of picks in some premium big school talent this yr. No more small school guys like Howard He looked good against teams without premium edge talent. Heck Christian has looked as good as Howard over the last couple of weeks and Christian looked very avg today. Scharping is simply a bust, although he had a good game today.
Tell me what those teams have invested. Dallas is really they only team that invested multiple 1st rd picks and a bunch of money into the offensive line. If your scheme is good and your qb know what he's doing, your line can be negotiated. Look at Cincy and people pre-draft saying they should draft an oline vs chase. Well, we see how prolific that offense is with the same oline they had last year. We've seen 1 1st rd pick, a 3rd pick, a traded for 5th, udfa, and a middle road fa being top 5.

I'm not going to list more but you should checkout the Titans/Colts OL's Ravens?

That’s sounds great and I would be on board with it except one little fly in the ointment. Miami and New York have to agree with the trades. I don’t see Miami trading back for Tunsil as that would make it look like they didn’t get the sweetheart deal in that trade the first time everyone says they did and I don’t see ANYONE trading for Watson till his legal issues are settled and those seem to just be entering a new phase.
You are joking right? They made a huge trade completely in Miami's favor then would shy a way from a good deal now he is a two time pro bowler? Dolphins need help on front line more so than most teams and they need it now. They have $75 m to easily handle $18 million a year. What comparable left tackles are being paid that at 28 YOA prime? Ross would be calling up everyone in his contact list saying can you believe that I got him back? IMO, Tunsil was not worth what we gave for him then but arguably could be now and I think Caserio would take less even more as LT now apparently doesn't want to play.

I agree that probably no one trades for DW before legal resolved yet the trade date begins March 16th and a trade can come anytime. Perhaps we will know how the legal issues will resolve by then? A trade can be agreed to by teams before then but not submitted to NFL for approval.

Gotta get Watson traded before this draft, dammit.
And I have no qualms with trading Tunsil either.
Stockpile 1st’s, 2nd’s and 3rd’s for the next 3 years.

Got it, I should be more careful but when folks begin throwing ideas around I join in. Will try to do better.

I agree. Especially while having him on a cheap contract for the next two to three years.

Couldn’t agree more! Let’s go get us some guards, corners and pass rushers! Once that’s set, we can make a run at a couple of good linebackers, and running backs! The offensive line must come first!
I think Morrissey could develop into a Greg Mancz solid interior depth type of guy. I want Linderbaum if the team picks in the 6-10 range. Set and forget at center next decade!
If they're picking 9th I'm OK with this pick.

3rd not so much.
Do you want to see how Mills operates behind the best OL possible? If so then you keep Tunsil and build the OL around him. Your question is a question better answered by CnD.

Look at the Dolphins as a cautionary tale. They traded Tunsil and look at where their OL is today. You want to take that risk? Not me, provided he wants to be here. If he doesn't want to be here then I'm on board with trading him. Provided that Caserio gets atleast a 1st and a 2nd in this yrs draft.

I bet if Tunsil was drafted like by the Texans like DB was, that you would want to hold onto Tunsil given his age and production.

I'm good if Caserio trades Tunsil or keeps him. If he keeps him then I hope he trades Tunsil to the NYG for pick #5 and pick #37.

Neal at 3 and Hamilton at 5 would be a great start to the draft. Then you could add more premium talent at 2-35/2-37.
Tunsil has been placed in bubblewrap and stored in the attic. He's being traded.

This got me thinking about draft capital. I think the plan is to rely on their extra 2023 1st rounder from the Watson trade as a hedge on their bet on Mills in 2022. If he underperforms, Caserio will have enough capital in 2023 to trade up to wherever and get a QB he wants. That's why anointing Mills now is somewhat low risk.

UNREALISTIC TRADES

Today's NFL features perhaps the most active and fearless group of general managers its seen in quite some time. We saw a number of blockbuster trades go down ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, and that trend continued through Round 1 on Thursday night.
As the general manager of the Atlanta Falcons for 13 seasons, I learned several things about executing trades: 1) It's important that both sides feel the exchange was a win-win; 2) It's equally -- if not more -- important to have good working relationships with your peers around the league. Portraying publicly that a trade was beneficial for both teams involved was always a critical aspect of keeping the door open for future trades.
I'll tell you one thing for sure: Finalizing draft day trades are some of the most exhilarating moments of the job, especially those that occur in Round 1. Back in 2011, we stunned the football world by sending five picks to the Cleveland Browns to move up from No. 27 to sixth overall in order to draft Julio Jones. Yes, it was a huge move -- and it paid dividends for the organization over the next decade.

They've also invested in Lewand/Saffold/Radnuz and over the yrs Conklin/Wilson in the 1st rd.
Saffold was in his 30 when they signed him, they let Conklin walk. They signed Ben Jones from Texans because he didn't meet O'Brien size requirements. Again, as I stated before, their scheme and having players that fit works better than just adding players. They had one of those overrated Alabama offensive line players and he was a bust. Those teams you named with the high end offensive lines didn't keep dumping high draft picks into that position. Like I've stated, they have to fixed the oline, but I think most will come when Kelly is gone. Much like the defense has gotten alot better because of the DC vs just the players.

Don't forget. A month ago, they had three former Texans (Kendall Lamm, David Quessenberry and Jones) starting on their offensive line. Lamm was replacing an injured Lewan, but then got injured.

He's been avg, but he's a great leader.

This is another example of the GM/HC dysfunction. RS didn't want to pay the freight and BOB thought Jones/Brooks were easily replaceable. They weren't.
To be fair. They thought they drafted Nick Martin to be Jones' replacement and hoped he was a poor man's version of his brother Zack Martin. Unfortunately, he appears to have as much strength as Chris Martin from Cold Play.

So with a straight face you're saying that was Smith call and not BOB call? C'mon man. You know that and the Brooks call was O'Brien.

I'm saying RS made final calls on personnel decisions and BOB had final control over the 53 on the roster of the players at his disposal.

That's the GM's job.

For instance now, do you think Cully has say in what personnel is on the roster? I dont and that's a good thing. Bottom line is with both Kubiak and BOB, the RS yrs were a failure.

In fairness. If Brooks didn't want to play for BOB and BOB felt Brooks didn't fit his culture. What was RS supposed to do? Since he had final calls on personnel, give Brooks the 5 years and $40 million the Eagles offered him and to hell with BOB's feeling or sign Jeff Allen to 4 years and $28 million?

BTW. Jeff Allen was a better LG than RG. Did RS tell BOB and Devlin to play him at RG? They were the ones with control over the roster. That's my point. Regardless of what side you want to choose, no individual is fully responsible for the mess that is the Texans. It has been a group effort.

Mock Draft’s are exactly that…..ideas of what any of us would do if we were in position to have a final say in the Texans draft. No matter how professionally discussed or bizarre…..they’re just our ideas.

I’ve liked Mills since I looked at him when the Texans took him. I think he’s played well enough to show he could be a starter.

But even if the Texans think he could be the guy they still need to take a qb within the first 4 rounds imo.

Mills would definitely be my starter heading into the off season but I wouldn’t want him to get too comfortable.

I'm for adding a QB in the draft.

But this draft isn't the yr to do it.

I've been incredibly bad at judging QBs in the history of the Texans, so it makes me nervous to say this.
I'm all in on Davis Mills as a franchise QB. The kid is very cool and level headed out there.
He made some beautiful passes today.
He looks the part to me.

I don't necessarily like Tim Kelly, but for the sake of consistency and Mills' development it's imperative that Kelly return next season.

Where was Mills in the first half. He was terrible. He improved enough in his second starting stint to be a bridge starting QB in 2022 so I commend him on improving and working hard, but this notion that he is THE no doubt about it long term guy is laughable.

Thorn

Dirty Old Man
Nobody has said this. Nobody.
Agreed. I think he's earned his shot at starting next year for no other reason we don't need to be taking a QB with a high round pick because Mills will do for next season, and there are no QBs worth taking with our 1st pick in 2022 anyway. This team is in too desperate need of good linemen on either side of the ball before we need to be using a high pick on a QB.
