Redskins Getting Questioned Again.....

I don't know man that's an interesting take, you have a point for sure, when watching Brown's highlights you see a bunch of complete j-brones getting run over, dudes that just wouldn't belong on a pro football field. But he played against some pretty tough defenses though playing from 1957 to 1965, he played the Giants twice a year that was one hell of a squad in the late 50's. He ran over a pretty tough Colts defense in the 64 NFL Championship. I was curious and checked to see that he actually never played the 62 Packers or 63 Bears, two of the best defensive units from that era.

I actually have put some thought into what era would have been the absolute toughest to play offense and I came to the conclusion that you could actually narrow it down to a single year, 1993. I've become obsessed with this season to the point where I'm actually thinking about writing a book about it. It was a complete anomaly because in the 80's you had this explosion of innovative offense, the west coast offense, the run n' shoot fad, all the rules changes in 1978 and the effect it had on this explosion of 1,000 yard receivers every year and Dickerson and Marino rewriting record books. But then you get to 1993 and it was like the league took a time machine back to 1973, defense completely ******* dominated the league that year across the board. It was one of the lowest scoring seasons in the modern era, over half the league allowed less than 300 points(and it was the fewest amount of teams to score over 350 on offense in the 16 game era).

When you factor in how physically brutal the rules allowed for the NFL to be that season, the talent on the field on defense around the league, you could make a case that the players who were great in 1993 were truly the best of the best in NFL history. They had the deck stacked against quarterbacks, receivers, and running backs that season like no other season in NFL history so the ones who managed to put up any kind of numbers that year truly were great.

For me on quality of competition I'd have to go further back before Jim Brown and put that on the original Cleveland Browns team and some of those players that were inducted into the NFL Hall Of Fame even though they only played 4-5 years in the NFL, when they are factoring in the Browns' AAFC run from 1946 to 1949 when Browns were like the Harlem Globetrotters of that league that didn't even have a college draft, they truly were running over j-brones in the AAFC. In that league you had the Browns and then you had a bunch of guys that couldn't make an NFL team back then.

Great post, man. Very interesting to read.

The Steel Curtain defense of the '70's would have been a tough one to face. Earl Campbell would have carried this city on his back to a championship if not for those defenses. Just the names on that team are awe-inspiring.

The 2000 Ravens and 1985 Bears have to be considered, as well.

Then there's the '60's when guys like Deacon Jones could have casts made with steel plates inside them. The rules allowed defenders to head slap offensive players, and he said he used that technique often. He said he wanted to give his opponents concussions! lol Crazy times.

That's a good one to bring up, Jim Brown certainly never played a defense like the Steel Curtain, Earl played them 2-3 times a year.

Maybe something with a good Comanche Warrior.

<----Look over there.

Redskins is one of the best names in the NFL. It isn't offensive to Native Americans either. They've bever been the ones making a big case over this. Just white liberals who want to show how offended they can get over different topics. They will actually hurt some of the Native American fans by doing this. Many of them love the name.

Eh , there are some NA's who are offended by it. I remember @Yvette saying something about it years ago. I don't recall what tribe she's part of.

It doesn't bother me but I know may others who don't care for it , its really a mixed bag.

I'm Comanche, Arikara, Seneca and Mohawk. None of my tribes like it. A better sampling than those 500+ ridiculous "self identifying" phone call polls, would be the National Congress of Native Americans. They represent several million Natives who collectively find the name offensive, and have stated that since the 60's.

Yeah , I remembered our conversation on that subject years ago …. probably the first time this came up. That must have been at least a decade ago , maybe longer.

Personally , it doesn't bother me , nothing compared to the many other things we've been referred to as … but I can definitely understand why others find it offensive.

There's also the issue of context …. call me that in the wrong way and I will find it offensive.

Troy Aikman, Emmit smith, Michael Irvin.

No doubt. Emmitt gets underrated these days I believe. Also great that 93 season was Sterling Sharpe one of my favorites back then(Andre Johnson always reminded me of him, Dre is my favorite player of all time). The 49ers had the top offense that season if I'm not mistaken(don't have a record & fact book in front of me right now) they were the only team to score over 400 in the whole league, Young and Rice put up some crazy numbers. The 3 teams in their division though were some of the worst defenses in the NFL that year. Buddy Ryan's Oilers held them to 7 points.

It really was crazy how low scoring 1993 was, like I'll watch random old games from that year and the ticker with the "scores around the league" at the bottom of the screen sometimes there were weeks where it was like nobody scored over 20 points.

Washington Red Wolves ain't bad. Not bad at all. Best of all the proposed names I've heard by far.

I got to admit I always kinda had a thing for the Redskins, I had an uncle who was a big fan of theirs so some of my first games to watch were Redskins games when they were good 91-92. I liked the Oilers more but was always rooting for Washington especially against the Cowboys. We moved to East Texas when I was in middle school around 95 and the kids there were ******** Cowboys bandwagoners, the whole lot of them. Washington kicked their ass in both games that year and it was glorious to me. Most of those same kids were big Titans fans by high school, that team was very popular in East Texas in 99-2000, bunch of slack jawed f....

I was into that 99 playoff run and was legit mad when they botched the field goal to lose that game to Tampa. I thought they could have beat the Rams that year. After the Oilers left my hometown I honestly lost interest in NFL but that Skins playoff season in 99 got me back into it.

The Joe Gibbs return was one of my favorite NFL teams of all my years watching the sport. I really loved that 2005 team, that streak to get into the playoffs was ******* amazing to me, I loved Chris Cooley, Clinton Portis, and felt like Sean Taylor was one of the most exciting players to watch. To me JJ Watt in 2014 reminded me of Taylor's years in Washington, it was so awesome to watch because you knew he was going to do something crazy, you didn't want to blink when he was on the field. The ******* mollywhoppings they put on the Giants and Cowboys at the end of that 05 run to get into the playoffs were so great to me. The victory over the Cowboys was one of the most glorious ass kickings I can ever remember seeing in the NFL, so satisfying, eliminated Dallas from the playoffs.

Then the whole saga with Taylor's death in 2007 really got me, I was rooting for that team for sure. To me Taylor was well on his way to being one of the best ever, his whole story is just one of the most heartbreaking. The Texans were always my hometown team but honestly I was more into that Redskins team during those dark days in Houston from 05 to 07.

The team fell apart so hard and I totally lost all sentimental attachment to them from 08 on to today where I could really care less about them. I do have some nostalgia for that team though, I should maybe buy some merch before it becomes a rare collectors item.

You know, "Redhawks" would allow them to use this old helmet:

Change the helmet to maroon, gold ring, maroon "R", current stripe (2-white/1-gold), feathers hanging in white with gold tips and gold face-mask. Might ruffle a few feathers (pun intended) but in no way would they be offending anyone with the name Redhawks......except bird-watching clubs.....LOL!!!!!!

That was sad. Sean Taylor was on his way to becoming an all time great. He was as good a college defensive player as I've ever seen.

Still prefer "Natives" or "Warriors"

The Navajo nation even has a suggestion for a new team name -- The Washington Code Talkers.

"Renaming the team 'Code Talkers' to honor the Navajo Code Talkers, and other tribal nations who used their sacred language to help win World War II would set the team on a path to restoring its reputation and correcting the historical misrepresentation of Indigenous peoples."

Hmm, I thought the problem was having any name associated with Native Americans since the ones protesting say that they don't want to be reduced to mascots. I get the issue with "Redskins" since that is a slur. However, most of the others are not, with maybe the exception of "Indians". "Code Talkers" would just be another mascot which I thought was offensive.

If the issue was just the slur "Redskins" then I don't see why they wouldn't just change the name to Warriors and keep everything else. The current logo, etc works well with Warriors. Actually, I think it works better than Redskins.

@Hookem Horns

There are 574 federally recognized tribes and some members want zero names and imagery, while others are good with it.

With names and imagery, you still get people dressing up in red face. Is it socially acceptable to be in black face?

I'm mostly fine with names and imagery. I figure it's up to stadiums to stop red face, if they don't allow black face.

Black Face is socially acceptable though.

It is for one party affiliation any way.

Trudeau and that politician in the US both got away with doing it and it wasn't much of an issue.

The entire subject has double standards all over it.

I’m glad that you’re joining this discussion. :) Red face is a no brainer. As for names would Snyder be safe with Warriors? The last I saw was that he was going to get rid of everything related to Native Americans so as not to have future problems. I also saw where some thought the logo was offensive.

BTW, what’s your take on some calling for the Chiefs to change? They could just keep the name and change the image to honor firefighters. Every FDP has a chief. The colors are already correct. Maybe a firefighter axe instead of an arrow?

I'm surprised no one thought they were going to come for the "Texas Rangers."

Get ready for that one next.

this dude loves his team
trademarked the names so that when the name-change happened, the franchise would be free to use his TM...as opposed to the name being held for ransom by another

McCauley first trademarked the Washington Pigskins in 2015, and while he has lost count himself, a search of the US Trademark and Patent Office website shows that he holds trademarks for names such as the Washington Monuments, Washington Redtails, Washington Veterans, Washington Red Wolves and Washington Warriors.

Thank you for this.

In case anyone is interested in the National Congress of Native Americans, here it is:

Opposing the Washington NFL Team’s Return to the District of Columbia until the Franchise Changes Its Offensive Name and Opposing the Negative Terminology it Engenders

I believe the new name is going to be the Generals. The copyrights to the name "Washington Generals" belongs to the Harlem Globetrotters. This could be the current sticking point for Snyder since he has to get an agreement of usage from the HG along with a financial agreement. HG certainly knows Snyder's current position and financial standing. The name works but how much would the HG want to allow Snyder to make his team PC? Donald Trump used the name "Generals" when he owned a USFL franchise in New Jersey. Their helmet design would fit perfectly with Washington's desired use:

This should do the trick with a few tweaks. Washington Generals.

Burgundy and Gold color scheme to remain. Where do teams get off calling the color yellow, gold?

Reminds me of a George Carlin quip.
"At my high school, our colors were Cardinal and Gold. Fight for the Cardinal and Gold!
It was ******* Red and Yellow, Cardinal and Gold my ass!"

  • Minority Owners Pressure Dan Snyder to Sell Washington’s NFL Team

  • minority partners of Washington’s NFL team are pressuring Dan Snyder to sell the franchise, according to people familiar with the matter, amid a growing fight inside a team facing controversy on multiple fronts.
Mr. Snyder, the team’s 55-year-old billionaire owner, has no intention to sell his majority stake in the team, the people said. A recent legal filing by Mr. Snyder suggests that at least one of the minority partners has attempted to leak defamatory information against him.
The team’s minority owners—FedEx Corp. CEO Fred Smith, Black Diamond Capital chairman Robert Rothman and NVR Inc. board chairman Dwight Schar—own approximately 40% of the team and have hired an investment firm to sell their interest in the franchise formerly known as the Redskins. Those same stakes would become more valuable if the entire team, which would likely be worth several billion dollars, were to be sold, the people said.

Washington put out a promo/teaser for the new name announcement...video of Ron Rivera being shown the new helmet design (they blurred it out to not reveal/spoil...BUT there's a reflection in the glass behind Rivera)

Washington Admirals

new design is a big "W" w/a dash connecting the lines of middle peak to form an "A"

+ 24hrs ago the domain "washingtonadmirals.com" would redirect you to the WFT website (no longer the case as of this morning)

meh
i like the logo-less helmets that sport the player's number

The sucks. I was hoping they would keep their Native American history in some way.

Surprised that if they didn’t go that route that they didn’t name the team the Red Tails.

Or let the fans name the team. Maybe they did.

Did anyone get Amsterdam's approval on this?

I get that.

There is a quidditch team in the DC area called the Washington Admirals.

I didn't even know that MLQ was a real thing till like a week ago. It looks as stupid as it sounds. Best part is they are changing the name of their made up sport because they no longer want to be associated with the person who created their made up sport. She, meanwhile, is still one of the richest women in the world so pretty much gives zero Fs about MLQ.
