I agree. Seems several have been benched this season, I had an impression that Culley was a players coach.

If Reid is telling the truth a team captain voicing concerns by way of a private meeting sounds like the right way to go about disagreeing. Hardly mouthing off through the media, or kicking off in front of the entire team.

Free agent in the off-season doubt he’ll be sticking around, which is a shame.
He wasn't sticking around anyway and I'm sure he wasn't doing the things the staff was asking him to do. He's a smart guy and he knows what he should be doing. The talking through the media was nothing more than a CYA moment to protect his FA value.

What you're forgetting is that the incident happened the day prior. They let Reid practice without telling him he was benched.

And I thought these guys were supposed to "build a culture" where guys would want to play here? What happened with that?

I think the missing element is what team rule Reid broke. They had a meeting to discuss the issue and Reid felt the meeting was good but it doesn't absolve him from whatever the infraction was (or culmination of things not previously reported)...could be why the next day Culley decided to bench him. Still not a good look if there wasn't clarity given to Reid.

What happened the day before? It's the holidays and I haven't been keeping up as closely.

Exactly. Now you have a disgruntled veteran who undermines leadership in front of the rest of the locker room before he exits in FA. This was an unforced error.

The players also see they're benching him because the opponent is the Jets. Would the same decision have been made if it was the Titans?

The only thing I see from Reid is hurting his shoulder once a game. He tries to play the team leader type in the media but is he really when the defense sucks year after year.

There was no clarity concerning discipline. They told him nothing, let him practice, then benched him last minute. That reveals indecisive leadership and bad communication.
Just because they didn't tell him, doesn't mean they were indecisive.

Like I said, after that meeting gone wrong, Culley/Lovie probably made the decision and were so pizzed they had Reid practice anyways as punishment. or maybe after the meeting Reid half azzed it during the next practice.

Culley was probably not in the meeting. Lovie probably told him about it & Culley had the meeting with Reed to get his side of the story. Then had another meeting with his coaching staff, then decided to scratch Reid for the game.

Hard to say. They’re pushing a team first mentality. We’ll see how Reed acts after this & the effect on the team.

Funny, had they not benched him we may have never known about it
Yep, and that's the way it should've been.

If you're going to bench him, have a sit down talk the next day to make sure all the reasons are understood. You don't let him practice like he's starting then blindside him with a benching. If they didn't have it figured out by the next day, let him play and discipline him next time.
