Offensive Coordinator

I don't know. Cowboys went into that game ranked 3rd and averaging 32.1 points per game. I guess they found themselves in a similar situation to the Bills and their #1 offense that was averaging 32.7 points a game and could only score six points against that terrible Jags defense.
One bad game does not allow for a proper evaluation. I tend to think based on the whole body of work that the Cowboys and Bills are pretty damned good on offense.

Yeah, everybody (not talking about here) freaking out about these good teams losing games recently. Uh, hello, even the best teams lose multiple games during a season. The last 3 SB winners have had 5, 4 and 5 losses. Cowboys are 7-2. They'll probably lose a couple more games at the very least and still be one of the better teams in the league. Same with the Bills, Rams, Cards, whoever. With injuries it's very rare for even the best teams to dominate every game they play, And more so now with the season extended. It's a long ass grind to play an NFL season. You're going to have some duds from time to time.

Plus Dak was coming off of injury and hadn't even practiced before he played against the Broncos.

What about the coaching part which is the strength of the Patriots?
If McDaniels becomes the next HC hopefully he can put together a strong staff. I would look forward to him coaching Mills and or a drafted QB of his choice. I would also expect Jimmy G to be the vet QB to show the young QB's the way.

A fan of McDaniel's buffoonery in Denver are you?

It's possible but I just don't see Josh McDaniels wanting to come here. They have their young QB who is progressing quite nicely and I'm sure he has been promised to take the reins from Belichick which will probably be within 2 years (my speculation).

If I were a fan of his…..I’d focus more on the success he had with NE than the 2 seasons he spent with Denver.

As with many coordinators…..sometimes they just aren’t HC material but are very successful coordinators. Some HC’s are just great managers and motivators while some coordinators are naturals with the X’s and O’s.

McDaniel’s should and probably will get another chance at being a HC. I think he’s going to stay with NE so he can follow in Belechick’s footsteps. He’s not hurting financially in terms of annual salary so he can afford to wait for the Patriot opportunity.

I agree with you, but McDaniels is real tight with Caserio/Easterby.

He may not want to wait for BB to retire.

I'm hoping that he's learned between his late 20's and today

The Colts seemed to think he had grown as a person and a coach.. Did you grow personally and professionally as you gained more experience?

BTW, the talent he added to the Broncos had a great deal to them winning the SB. He just picked the wrong horse in Tebow to be his QB.

If McDaniels eventually follows Belichick…..maybe he hires Caserio and Easterby away from the Texans so the team can can once again be together in NE.

If McDaniels wasn't going to wait for Hoodie, he would have came over with Caserio in the beginning.

McDaniels is reported to make $4 million/year as the Patriots OC. He would make more as a HC, a lot more ($6 million?) as the Texans HC. But, why jump into this circus when you can make $4 million and wait out Belichick to take over one of the great organizations in the league?

It's not happening.

Don't give Kyle any idea.
He's quite capable of handing out a 10-yr contract a la Gruden.

Kyle's days of eating multi-year, $multi-million deals may soon be over. First and foremost, the McNairs are business people. As Kyle continues to lose $$$ (or not make as much as the McNairs are accustomed), his stewardship of the team may end. I'm hoping a real football guy becomes team President, and they give Kyle on honorary title.

When he was hired one of the talking points was how connected/respected he was around the league.
He’s connected because there are a bunch of John Carroll college buddies and ex-Pats spread across the league. Respected? Caserio has been abused in almost every deal he’s made. He needs someone to talk things through with besides Kyle and Jack.

I wouldn't say that he's done one deal that will hurt this franchise in 2024.

I didn't know Payton or Pace went to John Carroll.

Speaking of college buddies. One of the things that's rarely discussed is how Belichick hires from the college ranks and rapidly promotes coaches and front office staff with little to no NFL experience. This might be another reason why it's foolish trying to duplicate the Patriots' Way. It's interesting how he finds these people and gets them assimilated into his culture and organization. For example:
  • Nick Caserio: A graduate assistant at Central Michigan gets hired and goes from coaching assistant to WR coach to personnel assistant to area scout to Director of pro personnel
  • Scott Pioli: The DL coach at Murray State and Belichick hires him as a pro personnel assistant with the Browns and then the Patriots
  • Bill O'Brien: The OC/QB coach at Duke gets hired as the Pats' offensive assistant and gets promoted to WR coach then QB coach then OC.
  • Josh McDaniels: John Carroll graduate and graduate assistant at Michigan State gets hired as a personnel assistant and gets promoted to defensive assistant to QB coach to OC.
  • Matt Patricia: A graduate assistant at Syracuse is hired as an offensive assistant and moves from coaching the OL to LBs, S and promoted to DC
  • Brian Flores: A graduate assistant at Boston College gets hired as a special teams assistant then moves to defensive assistant to coaching S to LBs.
  • Brian Daboll: A graduate assistant at Michigan State gets hired as a defensive assistant then coaches WRs.
  • Jon Robinson: The LB coach at Nicholls State gets hired as an area scout then gets promoted to regional scout to Director of college scouting
  • Dean Pees: The HC at Kent State gets hired as LB coach and then eventually promoted to DC
  • Thomas Dimitroff: Part time CFL and NFL scout who was even working on the Browns ground crew gets hired as a college scout then national scout and gets promoted to Director of college scouting
See a pattern? Dimitroff and Pees are the exceptions and this list does not include Belichick's sons on the current coaching staff. However, looking at this short list, it appears Belichick likes to hire graduate assistants on the staff of his college buddies and let them gain experience in management and even both sides of the ball. Talk about on the job training. However, the question remains. How much independent thinking do these hires do without input from Belichick because their resumes are pretty weak. Maybe that's the point.

Yes. If you think about it. O'Brien tried to do the same with Kelly who played DL in college and was the DC at Minnesota State Moorhead. He hired Kelly as a graduate assistant at Penn State, brought him to the Texans and switch him to the offensive side of the ball with the Texans.
He doesn't have the lineage or track record of training coaches . Hell, he's not even good himself, how you going to train someone

It would have to be a Caserio call, but if he has any thought of replacing Kelly before next season, do it now and replace him with Pep Hamilton. And start Mills.
Pep is not an OC.

Unless we’re just making a change to make a change I’d hate to see them do this. I honestly have no idea how Pep sees the game & don’t know if it makes sense to take him away from your young QB to run the offense.

If we’re going to make a change to make a change I’d rather see the WR or TE coach take over play calling & leave Pep with Mills

Why? What will that accomplish? It's the same offense, the same plays.

What needs to happen is putting Mills back into the lineup to work with Collins and Jordan and develop chemistry.
Coaches gets fired all of the times. And Pep might call the game totally different.

I agree might as well play the rookie again. No need to trout Taylor back out there.

So Hamilton is going to make the game plans, call the plays, while still coaching Mills? Again, what is the necessity of this move? The Texans clinched a losing season today. Not going to the playoffs. Let this crap play out.

That's exactly why TC needs to go. I'd rather the team go through the growing pains of learning a new system than continuing to see the crap we saw today
Tim Kelly? Do you mean at the end of the season or now? No way they can install a new offense with 6 games left.
Dave Ragone probably won’t be leaving Atlanta any time soon.
??? Dave Ragone???

And as Thunderkyss commented, replace him with who? I suggested Hamilton but he argued against this. If he's right, who else?
Pep can handle both jobs for the last 6 games. They likely aren't winning more than 1 or 2 more games at the most anyways. The rest of the season should be about finding out if Mills can play and what better way to do this than have the QB coach you've worked with all yr calling the plays. Pep knows Mills and what plays Mills likes to run better than any coach currently on the team.

What’s worse than a rookie OC?

A rookie OC thrown into the job after 3/4 of the season. What’s worse than that?

A rookie OC thrown into the job after 3/4 of the season with no run game, a porous OL, & a rookie QB who shouldn’t have taken a gameday snap this season.

Personally, I’m down with scrapping Kelly, but I would leave Pep 100% committed to Mills & let someone else be OC.
