[Pick 67] Davis Mills QB Stanford

All Pro
Awright, I like it Steel !
But the way Mills played Sunday, it puts a whole new perspective on watching the rest of our games this season.
I don’t get it. This kid has great potential yet so many here want to see him fail….just to show they were right...whatever that means. If nothing else these games are interesting again. He will start his 15th game since HS and he seems to be improving every week...Bills excluded. This is real football going on right now. Watching the beginnings of a paradigm shift. Only problem is that it is being carried out in a country of instant gratification and certifiable bitching.

Mills doesn't have to fail.
Some (and perhaps most) want to see a QB with better results than Matt Schaub and Alex Smith .
If Mills can get to that level, good for him.
I had cheered for Schaub, but it doesn't mean I ever thought he can take the Texans to the final destination.

I don't know about others, but my stance can be found in posts no. 327, 338, 379, 389, 495.

There were also a few posts in between about how the Texans had a good Oline, Foster, AJ, OD, a top ten defense.
And the SB never seemed to be anywhere near possible.

So wake me up when Mills surpasses good Schaub.

Yes and that's what I meant by a new perspective as we now realize for the first time we may have the opportunity to watch the growth and progress of a new franchise QB, the most important player on the roster and the one who could be the long-term successor to DW4.

Most of the folks bitching about Mills are the same one’s bitching about Caserio. First, they were pissed Caserio was hired. So their job is to expose each and every mistake (forget the good) so it appears they were right all along. So, in this vein the biggest mistake Mills made was getting drafted by Caserio b/c now Mills has become the biggest blown pick (where the Texans have a historical success rate of ducking zero) in RD3. Unfortunately, this way of thinking will put the shoe of negativity on each and every one of his draft picks.

Me….I think Caserio has a damm good chance of going 5 for 5 in his first NFL Draft.

The bitching is because Watson is never playing in HOU again, and that creates a massive amount of butthurt in specific agendas of specific posters and the other reason is Mills doesn’t fit those same butthurt posters agenda of a QB as far as they are concerned.

If nothing else, it’s fun watching them squirm over a 3rd round pick.

Who wants to see him fail?? Just because there's those who think he's not the 2nd coming of Joe Montana doesn't mean anybody wants him to fail.

The problem is those that give him all this high praise, gets countered with people bringing in a shot of reality, and it's taken as being too negative or wanting him to fail. That's bullshit.

He had a good game Sunday. He had one of the worst games in NFL history the week before that. The worst QBs have good games, and the best have bad games. He's had 1 great start, a decent start and a really bad start. Let's see if he can start stringing together some decent to good starts, and see how that goes.

how many games did Schaub have under his belt before he got to your good level? DM has three. Is he there yet? Instant gratification? You at least proved that part of my post. when mS was “good” did he have better players around him? When he was “good” did you post all the injuries to key players on the teams he beat like you love to do now? Stay asleep. I’m not buying your baloney.

If Mills was showing elite physical traits in his starts, you wouldn't see half of the criticism here. Fact is Folks let the measureables influence their thought processes on these types of things way too much. He hasn't looked any worse than any of the 6 guys drafted before him.......& all but 1 of those guys is considered to be franchise qbs. So where is the cut off?

Sure as hell can't be fan sentiment. Hell Jets fans are already booing & calling Zach Wilson "Peter Pan" :spit: b/c he looks like a 12 year old & 1 of those damn lost boys from 1 of those movies. If he were playing well, doubt they'd be seeing him like that.

I think they’ll turn their opinion on him soon enough. Kids got the talent. Just hasn’t figured out the NFL yet. I understand wishing he was more like Sanchez, but that didn’t work out either.

Mills is doing pretty much what I expected him to do: learn on the job after just 11 starts in college.

This is a throwaway Texans season. We all knew it going in. So giving the guy most of the season to grow and evaluate his potential is pretty much what I expected the franchise to do.

I'm hoping that, at minimum, we have a competent backup QB that can at least not lose games when called into action.

BTW, it's always those with an agenda that often think others as having one.
The irony is that it was you that I answered the question as to which players on a certain team that had injuries.
I wasn't looking for injuries on other teams to downplay anything.
You make me laugh.

Is this the litmus test now for being a good QB? Because Watson never got to one. Hebert hasn't gone to one. Lamar Jackson hasn't been to one. Dak has never been to one. Derek Carr has never been to one. Kyler Murray has never been to one. Baker Mayfield has never been to one.
Lots of people has the Lombardi as it.

Of course, we all know the QB doesn't make up the whole team.
What I was referring to is those QBs, like Schaub, who, that one year, had all kind of supports, from the Oline, to the RB and other weapons, from the D, and from the HC and still couldn't get the job done.

I don't want that kind of QB for my team. I prefer not to have that kind of QB on my team.

I'm just wondering where the "butthurt line" is and if I crossed it? I remember after Mills was drafted I stated something along the effect of "I understand the pick but I would have gone another route" and that was a statement I had to defend it. Was that crossing the line? After a bad game this season I wrote he was really green and could have used another year playing college ball. Did that cross the line of butthurt? If any of those comments, which I have been consistent on, have crossed the line, let those without butthurt (ever...about anyone) cast the first tube of hemorrhoid cream. *ducking for cover*

I think the butthurt line is like the ocean tide. Sometimes it's way up here and sometimes is way out there.

Mills' ball fake was so bad, the LBs knew immediately that it would be a pass.
With just one receiver to this side, the RLB can easily tell where the ball would go if it was going to be a route across the middle, in front of the safeties.
Mills telegraphed the play with his eyes also.

I bet Mills was thinking the LB is never there in practice.

Kelly has Mills on a short leash. Kelly knows Mills strength and weaknesses. That's why the Mills game plan calls for mostly predetermined quick and short routes (< 10 yards) that can get the ball out of Mills hand quickly. This works well for Mills. He looks good, completes a lot passes and is highly efficient. When Kelly deviates from this and calls for passes > 10 yards Mills misses on to many passes, his accuracy and completion percentage drops considerably. His INTs and SACKS also go up dramatically.

You mean like on those deep outs he was throwing to Cooks today? I thought Mills looked pretty good today for a rookie that's learning on the job. Sure, he didn't see a LB and got picked, This happens to all QB's regardless of experience. The other int was a throw he tried to fire in between the CB and S. He should've put more air under that throw.

After high school the guy only makes 12 starts in college and then suddenly is starting in the NFL. If he contracts the Carr Syndrome, and we ruin him, then it's not like its a huge waste considering he's a 3rd round pick. Whether he ever makes it or not isn't going to affect the Texans future anyway. Unless he suddenly becomes a MacHomes or something. LOL

What deep out?
The ball has to travel beyond 20 yards to be called a deep throw.

There were several throws 15-20 yd outs that were thrown from the opposite hash to the far sideline. If you've ever tried to make that throw you would know that's a long throw that has to have great accuracy or it will get picked.

This is another case where reading stats dont give you the true picture. In other words stats lie. Go to your local high school and try to make a throw from the far hash to the sideline 15 -20 yds down the field and you'll see what I mean.

Another way to look at it - how is Jacksonville's #1 pick in the draft looking so far?
Sure, he likely has a higher ceiling than Mills, but then again, Mills was taken 63 picks later.

Mills had a good developmental game under the constant stress of the blitz. His pocket completely collapsed on more occasions than I’d care to count. The sacks were insanely fast but I did see Mills maneuver enough in the pocket to pop free of the blitz and still throw a quick-hit pass. I saw him make some nice passes and throw some INT’s.

I think the Texans have a QB1, in Mills, that they should be excited to build around. OL and RB’s have to be addressed over the next 2 seasons in the draft.

The OL is full of powder-puffs, albeit Britt, and this has to change. This OL needs athletes with a nasty demeanor and an absolute desire of wanting to destroy the player in front of him.

Texans had a few decent runs against the Colts defense but overall same ol’ story for the last 6 weeks. What a difference in watching Taylor pop through the initial wave with nice vision and a minor shift. A healthy Colts OL will allow him to have plenty of nice games ahead. The Texans running game lacks vision and burst…..how much of that should be attributed to the OL….hard to say.

Toro Bravo

Rookie
So if Davis Mills was on a better team - good OL, running game, defense & good OC - would he be a good QB? Me thinks so. Having your rookie QB throw 43 attempts because you can't run is not going to have good results.
We had a franchise QB on a bad team last year. And it was an ugly 4-12 season.
I don't know if Mills is the solution but I do know he is not the whole problem.

It’s amazing to me on how people flip flop around here. Not everyone but a few so if the shoe doesn’t fit, then this doesn’t apply to you.

Mills biggest issues other than experience is he locks onto his receivers and he does not go through his progressions when he has the time. None of the experts pointed that out. It’s strange to me because they would always point these type of things out whenever the quitter (4) did those things. One member hasn’t shown up to bash Mills for these glaring issues like they would do if that joker #4 was playing.

According to the writeup in this morning's Chronicle, the Texans were calling plays to throw downfield, but the receivers were effectively covered up by the Colts' zone defense. With a 70%+ completion rate, it would seem Mills was effectively checking down.

We definitely need a better Oline and that was supposed to happen this year - so far it isn't looking much better.
I am very disappointed with the new coaches.

How many points have we scored on the ground?
The running game is key to even experienced NFL caliber QB's - they are essential to a rookie learning the ropes.
Spin it however you want, and not saying you’re not right, but the results are there.

Spin? Facts.
You have to expect a transition with a rookie QB.
How did Peyton Manning go his first season?
This team is in full rebuild mode with a rookie HC and Mills himself has had what - 15-16 game starts since high school?
Personally, I say we keep looking at him and take our lumps.

I’m not saying any of that is not true. You’re the one who brought up how it’s going in J-ville. I just assumed you were trying to compare him to Lawrence. I was simply responding to that.

You want to get into all the things wrong with the Texans offense, that’s another conversation, but even then, don’t act like Mills doesn’t play a part in it.
