Welcome to Houston David Culley, Head Coach

David Culley, wow I love that guy. NothingonEarth makes me feel better than watching him work. You don’t think being a good man and coach for 25 years doesn’t jerk a tear when you see Brandin Cooks give him the game ball and tell him we love you and you lead and we will follow. Just great stuff. Who gives a **** about anything else in this part of the TURNAROUND.

I can’t find where the blown penalty call was discussed.

But in regards to Culley declining the penalty - I would say if he did that he should have went for that on 4th and 1. I think we were just entering mid field.

I see what he was trying to do, pin them down at their goal line, but you don’t have a punter that can do that.

I see most say take the penalty and do the 3rd down again. I think statistically that was the right call.

However- you do that you risk a turnover to get first down, and it was still 10 yards. It wasn’t 3rd and 5 or a mid to short yardage situation.

I would say he should have just gone for it on 4th and 1 at mid field. I could be wrong in that.

This was a new HC with his first real dumb play call.

But it was a bad one. And probably won’t be his last.

More or less agree with your post, but this...

Nah, the kid we've got punting definitely has it in him to pin them down. Why he didn't on that punt is a mystery. Probably thought Culley was feeling out the Browns & was going to call a timeout... or something else that doesn't make any sense.

I thought David Culley was discussing a play with another coach. it did not appear to be Tim Kelly but there was some hesitation before making the decision.

From my angle Culley didn’t hesitate to make the call he did. Thinking about it with the crowd noise, etc he didn’t want a momentum shift by giving the ball to the Browns at midfield that early in the game. I’ll bet if they were 15-20 yards further downfield he would have gone for it.

What angle did you have that no one else had? I want that TV package.

You take the penalty and go for the 1st down on 3rd & 10. Every coach makes that call. You can get a 1st on the play. On PI. On a defensive holding. You take the penalty and try to keep possession.

I'm certain Culley would do that if he gets into that situation again.

I was just about to post this link. To @Lucky's point and from Culley himself:

“If I had it to do all over again I would have taken the penalty. It was more out of frustration than anything,” Culley said. “I was a little frustrated at that time because I was thinking field position, I did not want to do anything that hurt us. . . . That was just out of frustration on my part because of the series we were having at that time. But if I had it to do over again, I would have taken the penalty and given our offense a chance to get the first down, which is what I should have done.”

Nope. Even if you were planning on going for it, which they weren't even planning on that since they punted, you still play 3rd down over. And I don't see how the risk of the 3rd and 15 play that got them to 4th and 2 is any different than what would have been 3rd and 10 replaying the down.

You don't give away downs. It was just a brain fart, and he basically admitted as much. An issue that hasn't been talked about is where was somebody with some sense to tell him to take the penalty and replay the down? I mean, I know there's a lot of tough decisions to make in a football game, but this was as simple as it gets.

To your first paragraph:

I would say you are more likely to covert on 2 yards than on 10 or 15 yards. I think going for it would have been best because of the momentum. By taking the penalty you had two chances to get 10 vs one chance to get 2. He wasn’t going for it so in that case you are probably correct his mindset at that time would have to been replay it and then punt.

To the second:

I think everyone agrees there should be a guy dedicated to HCs that does something to the effect of going over the statically smart play calls on crucial downs during timeouts, to challenges, to penalties, to the game clock, to probably other things too. Just some stat guy in the ear. Wouldn’t hurt.

Props to Coach for admitting he screwed the pooch on that call.
Insomuch as he owned it, sure. But wtf are we getting here? That’s the kind of call he should be able to make in his sleep.

Heck, the default answer would have sufficed. “Coach, the other team fchd up. Do you want to penalize them, or let them off the hook?”

Pretty sure that his owning it was about he was frustrated in the moment and made a bad call, not that he didn't know what the right call was. There is a difference and plenty of coaches have made poor decisions when they are mad. It doesn't make them idiots.

I’m still trying to determine what Culley was so upset about? The false start? That’s no reason to lose your cool.

When you’ve been preaching it all summer long it’s every reason to lose your cool….and what, a butt chewing is losing your cool? A leader with his nice guy personality that can separate himself from his players to drill home a message doesn’t lose respect, he gains it. Standing on the sideline with your arms folded obviously isn’t his style. Hes got that competitive hatred of mistakes. THAT is what this franchise has always lacked.

The fact is that Culley just F'd up in the worst possible moment. For a normal person, it is excusable. For an NFL head coach, it is not. After 30 years as a coach in the NFL your shouldn't make such a bone headed decision. This situation really told me why he shouldn't be a head coach. I fear there are more to come.

I would imagine if it was the 2nd game O'Brien coached you probably saw about the same reaction. It was when Billy O was doing the same thing in his 50th game that people just had enough.
Yep,

But the reaction on here has been priceless.

Hopefully this is a learning experience for Culley.

He's still a rookie HC coaching in his 2nd game. Give him a chance. How many chances did we give Kubiak/BOB.

It was inexcusable, but so far this team has been prepared, ready to play, and fights hard. So he made a bonehead call, I would not say he is not fit to coach. Urban Meyer's teams look woefully prepared, and I think it is easier for Culley to clean up a bonehead thing like this than figure out how to have his team ready

This is the most inane post ever. A first time HC who is doing a magnificent job of helping to bring this group to a professional level is under a ridiculous microscope? What about the veterans who muffed a punt at the worst possible moment or missed an easy FG? BTW an NFL HC is a normal person, not a god. Are you happy with his body of work? I really can say that nobody expected to feel this good about the level and energy of play from this team after just two games. This game tonight is one I wouldn’t watch in the past…. Another injury **** sandwich handed to this team at the worst possible moment… but somehow that “bone headed coach” wants me to pull for him and the Texans and it’s good to be a fan again.

To echo what everyone else has said:

So far: He has his team ready to play. They play hard every game.

That is better than some other seasoned NFL coaches.

I will take that over one blown call. I will take one blown call every other game if that means this team is ready to play every Sunday and the players play hard.

It too small of a sample size to one way or the other will happen with more consistency.

I've always said Culley was a bridge HC. Did you ever think differently? So if Culley gets fired I won't consider it to be a FUBAR.
Why a bridge HC? Why wait a year? Why waste a year? Why start over next year? One bad decision begets another.
