My Tyrod Taylor observation…

Not sure that the point was DHop being targeted the most in the NFL as it was the obvious gap in targets between DHop and the next Texans receivers.

2019: DHop 150 (30% of total targets), Fuller 71, D. Johnson 62, Stills 55 (34% of total targets)

2018: DHop 163 (32% of total targets), Fuller 45, Griffin 43, Coutee 41 (25% of total targets)

2017: DHop 176 (33% of total targets), Anderson 55, Ellington 54, Fuller 50 (30% of total targets)

In Arizona last year he had 160 targets (27% of total) but Kirk had 79, Fitz had 72 and Edmonds had 67 (39% of total targets).

He had three teammates this Arizona last year with 65+ targets, but in his three years with Watson (and/or a playbook designed around Watson) he had exactly one teammate hit that mark.

Interestingly enough, in the two seasons after AJ left and before Watson came on board, he had five teammates (Washington, Shorts, Fuller, Fido and Griffin) that reached 75 targets or more in one of those seasons. Something clearly changed once Watson became the QB. We can call it the scheme or we can call it Watson's style of play, but I don't think it is about the passing game talent level in 2015-16 compared to 2017-19.

Side Note: y'all remember 2016 when they finally figured out how to use TE's in the passing game and got 115 catches, 1100 yards and 7 TD's out of them? Then promptly forgot the position the next year?
Good post. I wonder if the gap in targets between Hopkins and the next Texans WRs are due to Fuller missing 6, 9, and 5 games between 2017-2019. How many other games that he played in and was not 100%. We all saw how the offense sputtered without a healthy Fuller in the lineup.

Even Coutee was either injured, in the doghouse or running the wrong routes. So, it comes down to besides Hopkins, who was reliable and available to take some of Hopkins' targets? Finally, for an offense that utilizes the slot WR, O'Brien could never find a slot WR. A case can be made that Amendola might be the best or most competent slot WR since BOB was hired.

When Coutee wasn’t busy being injured, in the dog house, or running the wrong routes he was out there fumbling the ball at the worst times possible. It’s like he and Nick Martin were competing with each other about who could f uck up the game worse.

He was picked up by the Colts.

I wonder how long that will last.

Back to Tyrod. This just might be his time and place to shine as a starter again since stint with Bills? Then came Allen. So there is that. All that investment in the OL is paying off, and your going to need to stay strong here for the Texans next man up.
That’s my thoughts as well. TT is, imho, very motivated to prove he’s got what it takes to be that QB everyone wants and counts on. Now is is time to shine and prove it to the naysayers who’s bypassed him and he’s in the perfect environment, group, and circumstances to prove a lot of critics wrong, even those critics whose discounted the Texans’ prospects of any kind of success this year. Being the proverbial ’underdog’ does have the motivationing factor needed.

Baker Mayfield: I think people took Tyrod Taylor for granted
“I think people took Tyrod for granted,” Mayfield said, via Dan Labbe of Cleveland.com. “I think he’s an extremely good leader. I think his work ethic alone, just his routine and being the same guy every single day for every single person in the building, it’s a tremendous way of showing his leadership.

“Everything that he taught me, leading by example and doing different things, not saying that we lead the same way, but there’s always different ways to learn, and I’m very thankful to have stepped in a QB room with Drew Stanton and Tyrod that I was able to learn from those guys. It’s something I’m obviously very grateful for.”

Good interview with Tyrod on the Pat McAfee show:

I like the guy. He seems like a really genuine, nice dude, and you can't help but root for him.

Interesting things he said about Easterby, as well. I'm not going to disparage any of them, as it is clear that they are getting players that are compatible with the 'culture' they are trying to build. And let's be honest, in the end, who cares what the culture is in the building if it leads to winning games. And that's all I'll say about that. . .for now. ;)

I just hope Tyrod can stay healthy. Dude's history is a bit cursed so maybe this is the place where he can finally fulfill his potential. *fingers crossed while knocking on wood*

powda

The bridge between stupid and useless is short.
I'd only seen highlights of him elsewhere but always liked him. I was/am aware of the injury history and it's not especially good.

Watching him Sunday he looked a bit shaky in the first quarter even when he got completions. Once he settled in, he was pretty damn good. I still think his accuracy waivers on the run but he is immensely talented.

Seems like a good dude dealt a lot of bad hands. I really liked this signing in the off-season and hope it works out.

Nothing new about TT, he is a game manager who unfortunately has been injury prone of late. The mental aspect and intangibles of his game are above average but his arm talent is not, and that's no slight to him just the reality IMO. He is the bridge that he is supposed to be but it doesn't mean the team can't have some success with him. The offensive design seems to well enough to be competitive with him at the helm for now.

“when healthy” :(

You guys called it, unfortunately, but hopefully he’s salvageable before the season gets away from us…any idea how long he likely is out for?

Not well

But they made the SB the yr he stayed healthy.
He could be the greatest QB of all time for all I care, but if you’re going to cite availability as the reason to replace Tyrod, shouldn’t his replacement score high in that area?

It might be a good idea to replace Tyrod with JimmyG, but it’s not because he’s less injury prone.

He less injury prone than TT is.

But still very injury prone.

I was responding to beerlover who said the best ability is availability & mentioned Caserio going to get Garoppolo. I was just pointing out availability is not a strong suit for JimmyG.
Get your point. Maybe not the best reason to point out Garoppolo but he is playing @100%. He actually looks better than ever, reminds me of Alex Smith, higher level game manager than Tyrod without as many soft tissue issues.

Taken by New England #62 (Caserio) 2014 2nd rd. 2014. Texans could have traded up, sitting in slot #65. Ironically Justin Britt was sandwiched in between #64.

San Francisco seems content and prefer keeping Garoppolo and let Trey sit and learn, other than red zone. Anyway back to Tyrod and his health. I’m personally bitter because he was supposed to be the Chargers starting QB so Justin Herbert could have that same luxury to sit, watch and learn but due to rib discomfort Taylor and team doctors decided they could inject to relieve, a mis-hap occurred and punctured his lung. Can’t blame him for wanting to minimize pain or could not make it back afterwards, but fact he only played one game and had this issue is a red flag.

The rest is history. Tyrod never played another snap for the Chargers and Texans signed him to replace Watson. He played wonderfully in his one game, heck he won his first game with Chargers, but then out before half of 2nd game? Hence my remark “availability is the best ability”. Hope this clarifies your question? Props to SteelbTexan for having my back, he knows. :barman:

In his three full years as a starter, Garoppolo played in 25 games and missed 23. Not sure that making it through three games this season is the 100% declaration you think it is. TT wasn't declared out for the season because of that Game 1 injury last year. Herbert was named the starter for the rest of the season after Game 4 after three straight 300 yard games. Being replaced isn't the same as being unavailable.

Garoppolo looked good last night. I don’t know about better than Tyrod who also looked pretty good early on. Different, yes. & I can see ifyou prefer Garoppolo’s style, which I do, in that system.

Not saying I prefer Tyrod in our system. Kelly & Pep are making this thing up as they go along.

To me it looks like New Orleans & Taysom Hill. I don’t particularly like that.

imo, if you don’t have a championship caliber QB, you should be looking for an Alex Smith. Build your team, win some games & when you get your QB, whether it’s Mahomes in KC, Brady in TB, Stafford in LA. You’re ready to roll.

All that said, I really liked the way Davis looked in his first start. Nothing flashy, but I think that’s coming.

three games in one year and game four coming up is double the availability of Tyrod Taylor. That’s all I mean for 100% now. Jimmy G is also 3 years younger going into his eight season not his eleventh. Tyrod can still move around and make some high level throws but if his mobility becomes an issue he’s in trouble. Goroppolo is better in the pocket but less mobile. Overall think he a better QB than Matt Schwab was for Texans.

I grew tired of defending Mills and all those complaining about wasting a 3rd rd pick on him, heck the Texans wasted first round picks, and they desperately needed a back-up QB at minimum, give him a chance I agree.

Nothing will probably change until off season anyway unless something strange happens with Deshaun Watson then all bets off:specnatz:

I missed the context where availability was about this season only.

2 seasons ago Jimmy G played the whole season and helped get his team to the SB.

You could do worse than Jimmy G being your QB. I like TT too. For me it's kind of a toss up who I would like to be behind center next yr if Mills proves not to be the guy. I probably would go with Jimmy G due to him being younger and proving he can last an entire season without missing games. But there's a strong case to be made for TT.

I don't know that lasting one entire season out of three, and it not even being his most recent season, is cause to consider a trade for him.

Garoppolo is Sam Bradford at this point in his career until he can prove he can stay healthy. He is also really lucky that Trent Dilfer got his team to a SB, otherwise his 2019 post season would always get brought up as the ultimate game manager stats.

I mean, I respect your opinion and know you have always loved him from way back when, but there is not much about Jimmy G that says give away draft picks for him. Sign as an FA? Maybe. But not draft picks.
