Texans random thought of the day

"Brooks Kubina" ? Interesting surname ? Names interest me.
At first I thought maybe he's Nigerian ? A brother named Brooks, nah I don't think so.
So I see his picture & bio (thanks C&D) and discover he's a local, from here in Clear Lake. You know here in Clear Lake we are known
for producing talented folks, but modesty prevents me from going on too much.
Anyway welcome young Mr Kubina, I hope you do well, best of luck !
I believe his surname is Czech. I’ve got a Czech friend who is an Osina. I’m Czech. My mom was a Smajstrla….gotta buy a vowel.

A bit over the top. I don't see the Texans being the worse team in the League.......not even that close

NFL betting: It's not too late to bet against terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Texans

The Houston Texans are down to one undeniable blue-chip asset, and he isn't practicing with them. He might never play with the team again.

The saga of quarterback Deshaun Watson is more complicated than just another Texans misstep, but it boils down to this: One of the best quarterbacks in the NFL is not practicing during what appears to be a hold-in. The chances of Watson playing all season for the Texans seem incredibly small. Yahoo's Charles Robinson said the team hasn't given up hope that Watson will play for the Texans again:
THE WHOLE STORY

It's more than possible the Texans won't have the worst record this year. There's always some team in the league that for some reason just falls the hell apart. The Texans have already completed their falling apart phase, so now they're one up on the other one or two that might do it.

Well, they had the 3rd worst record last season. After everything that occurred this offseason you either believe the Texans will be better due to addition by subtraction (Watt, Watson and Fuller, to name a few) or not. I’m on the “or not” side, meaning the Texans are not better for losing those guys.

This is a process. We knew, at least some of us believed we knew, the road to redemption is a long and bumpy one. Regardless of how someone feels about Watson and Hopkins, the talent on the offensive side of the ball has taken a big hit. And although I wasn’t a huge fan of McKinney, he was a big thumper in the middle of the defense that used to be, at a bare minimum, solid against the run.

The Texans will be very different this season, but better, as in not one of the worst teams in the league, “not even that close” to it? I very much doubt it. As always, I hope I’m wrong.

I don't know if they'll have the worst record or not. I do believe they'll be in the running though, getting them at least a top 5 pick. Hell, they were the 3rd worst last year, and that was with a top tier QB. They certainly won't have that this year.

There's areas I think they will be improved over last year, o-line being one, which may translate to a better run game, but is that enough to overcome the drop off at QB, and thus the aerial attack? And who knows what the defense will look like? Will they have a pass rush? Can the secondary cover anybody?

This feels like it's 2002 all over again.

That's twice as good as 2005 or 2013. And in 2003, after that 4 win season, they won 5 games. So there's that to look forward to.

No matter what happens this season it will be interesting because it's coming after a nearly complete reboot of the franchise. That in itself is enough to keep me interested. Better? Worse? No difference? Who knows? LOL

I don't think the Texans will be better because they've subtracted Watt, Watson, or Fuller any more than I thought they would be better for subtracting Hopkins.

I think the Texans will be better than they were last year because it appears they are going to be more committed to running the ball & running the ball well.

Give Lindsay & Ingram some holes & they will make plays.

If... & I know it's a big if, but if David Culley can improve on last year's presnap penalties, that will also go a long way towards improving this team.

More and sustained effort will also go a long way toward improving this team as well. We did not see that during a lot of games last season.

I think Lindsay is a fine addition. And I think the Texans will try to stay committed to running the ball, yes. Problem with that could be twofold: they've got to consistently make plays in the passing game to be unpredictable and they lost the three biggest playmakers in that department (passing game), and; the defense can't put the offense in a hole too often early in games but I think that's exactly what's going to happen.

Theoretically, running the ball and playing ball control is a great plan of attack. I think that is the plan for every team. The balanced teams have a better chance at being effective at it than a team that was just thrown together in one offseason. So it's not just that they lost a lot of very good/great players. They had a massive (and necessary, by the way) turnover of players and they're going to have to learn how to play together. There's something to be said for team synergy, which is built over time. The good news, if I was looking for it, I believe the offensive line has that type of chemistry because they've been together for a couple years. The other units, though, have a long way to go in that department. Which, by the way, a lot of these new guys are on one or two year contracts. So...hurry up, fellas!

Watson is a primo QB, but the offense will not miss much with Cook, Conley, Miller, Collins; and Brown and Akins. Taylor won't have the deep ball Watson had, but his short to intermediate game will get the ball into our receiver's hands. And this to go with a potent running game.

We're going to have a very good offense.

A little hope and optimism is one thing, but man, c'mon..

Texans claim OC Drake Jackson off waivers from Detroit. UDFA 4 year starter at Kentucky. 2nd team all SEC 2020.

I agree with most of this but Cooks/Conley/Collins are all capable of making plays outside the numbers. Hopefully one of Brown/Akins/Warring can make plays inside the numbers.

I think someone just explained the waiver concept to Caserio. They probably didn't think much of it when he was in New England.

Wow, random thought. Don’t know how it looks in H-Town but out here in the western Hill Country the waxing crescent moon offset by the evening star is off the charts beautiful. maybe it’s the wine, no way, this just transcends DW’s anus for some reason. Another random thought. Everyone has digital clocks. Ever notice when you glance at the time how often the time ends in a 1. Like 4:11, 2:01, best…11:11, 1:11, etc.. don’t laugh, just observe…

I don't know what the truth is about Keke, but he can make plays in the middle as well. Lindsay as well.
From top to bottom, we have very good receivers. We just need the qb to get them the ball. Taylor is known as a qb that doesn't make mistakes, quickly processes which receiver to throw to and doesn't throw many interceptions. Our OL is solid and if they can stay mostly healthy, yes, I think we can be optimistic. We do have a tough schedule but I think the Texans are going to exceed national expectations of being the worst team with maybe only 4 wins. We're going to surprise.

Maybe but I read over the weekend that our wide receivers if I remember correctly are ranked 29th or 30th in the NFL.

They have certainly been bringing a lot of OL in during camp. Probably bodies until Cannon/Taylor get to the field. Also, Geron Christian activated from Covid reserve.

Between Drake Jackson and Ryan Mccollum Texans have two centers in camp that performed well in the SEC. If either of them can be quality depth that’s a value addition from the UDFA ranks.

Those are the A&M boys, right? I haven’t heard anything about them yet. Was wondering how they are doing…

Just to update this -- # of players held out from playing games this weekend:

Rams 38
Vikings 33
Seahawks 31
Giants 31
Packers 30
Browns 29
Broncos 26
49ers 25
Raiders 25
Saints 22
Ravens 22
Chargers 22
Texans 17
Dolphins 16
Bears 15
Bengals 13
Jets 12
Chiefs 11
Bucs 8
Jags 7
So the Bucs and Chiefs held out about as many players, combined, as the Texans. Wonder how to spin that one? Maybe teams worried about their depth need to protect their starters And hold them out.

The Covid list guys were not included in the DNPs. How many was that BTW, 4? If so, there's still 2 guys missing. 67 played, 17 were listed as DNP, and the 4 Covid guys. That's 88 players. PUP list guys don't count against the 90 man, do they?

Compare the above numbers of Deshaun Watson to Davis Mills' numbers at his Pro Day........and it would come as a surprise to many:

In the 40-yard dash, Mills first ran a 4.66 time and then topped it with a 4.58 run (unofficial times). He also had a vertical jump of 32 inches, a standing broad jump of 9’2’’, a three-cone drill time of 6.90 and a 20 yd shuttle time of 4.37.

But I thought Mills athletically was Schaub re-incarnated.

I wonder how Kaepernick compares. These numbers really don’t mean anything. If he can play he can play. If he can’t...
That's right.

I have no idea how Mills's numbers, the ones CNND posted, will translate to the NFL. Nobody knows. I know what they meant for Watson and Mahomes.

And tbh, I don't know if it matters. Mills may be immobile. But if he can read defenses, get the ball out of his hand lightening quick, throw with anticipation and accuracy, know when to get rid of the ball, the mobility stuff won't matter as much. It's all TBD, though.

I'll just add, if the Texans are 11 games into the 2021 season and they are 3-8 (this is where I have them at that point in the season) or worse, it'll be time to find out those things about Mills. That'll give him 6 games: Colts, Seahawks, Jaguars, Chargers, 49ers, and Titans.

Taylor's not going to last the whole season, we'll see plenty of Mills.
If Taylor doesn't last, what makes you think Mills will?
