Texans Minicamp, OTA’s and Preseason

Again it took the league a full year to drop the hammer on Elliot. Elliot played a full season and then the following year he was suspended 6 games. Elliot was found to be innocent. The NFL will more and likely drop the hammer on Watson next year no matter how things turn out.

If this is the case….then it really makes more sense for Watson to suit up and plan on playing this season versus roaming the sideline and collecting his money…..personally, I’d rather see him help collect some Texans wins while keeping his NFL value high.

With Watson playing behind a better oline, better running back core. This team will win more than 9 games. Especially if Lovie and the that Defense is middle of the pack or higher.
Not that it matters, but I wonder how true that is. I put a lot of blame for our bufoolery offense on the leadership of that offense. From BO’b, to the coach on the field.

A lot of the results of every play has to do with how the guy under Center reads the defense, adjust the play & execute.

We know he had trouble identifying blitzers in the passing game & adjusting/calling out protection.

I’m thinking if this same guy read something he didn’t like & then changed to the basic run check, it could very well explain what we saw, & why BO’b was reluctant to replace Devlin.

Watson is by far the most talented & dynamic player we’ve ever had play the position. But nowhere near the brightest. & his extracurricular activities puts a big spotlight on his mental shortcomings

"Only" if Lovie and that defense is middle of the pack or better. The Texans proved last year what they can do with Watson and a terrible defense. I like Lindsay, and to a lesser extent Ingram but the two of them probably aren't worth 5 wins.

Anyway, as Speedy mentioned Watson won't be playing another snap for the Texans. But then again, that's what McClain has said too, so you never know.

None of us can say confidently that he won’t take another snap for the Texans. Those same people said he wasn’t going to show up for camp. Right now all of us are speculating. Now those speculations can be true. But there’s a strong chance he will play for the Texans. They have him in the building as well as direct communication verses that indirect crap that was going on this off-season. He’s also giving pointers to all the quarterbacks as well as receivers. Don’t be surprised if he’s under center next week.

So you think he’s just going to stand around at camp, play some safety, not even travel to Green Bay, then decide to hit the switch come Sept. 12?

Today is the last "training camp" day for Texans. They move to the regular-season mode tomorrow. What does this mean? Media is limited to only the first little bit of practice then it gets locked down. If they want Watson to start but want to avoid the circus as long as possible, this will be the time to do it. I stand by my prediction (barring something happening with the legal stuff like charges filed) that Watson will be the starter week 1.

Nobody knows what they’re doing. He could be with the ones next week and start the second preseason game.

They’re in communication and that’s the most important component to mending a bad relationship.

Some reporters have reported the Texans are trying to keep him. So are we going to ignore those rumors or just only stick with the rumor of him not playing another down here?

:toropalm:

You are 100% correct but he hasn’t been legally charged with anything at the moment….hence his availability to be at the Texans practice facility and the Texans allowing him to participate to a certain degree at this time.

You know….the Texans may be waiting on word from the NFL offices on how they will proceed if Watson returns to practice for full participation. If Goodell is open to Watson returning and willing to wait on rendering his punishment until a verdict has been issued….it would give the Texans their best chance at receiving full value for Watson when they’re clear to trade him.

Again, I’m not going to condemn Watson until a guilty verdict has been issued. I do not like what he’s done to put him in this situation but no matter how I feel…..there’s a judicial system in place to handle this matter.

Difference is I don't give a crap about his trade value.

I wasn't one of those guys. I knew he would show up once he ha had to start paying Hardin.

To be clear, if this POS plays another down for the Texans, then I'm done with then and this is coming from a season ticket holder since 2003.

Supporting a sexual predator is where I draw the line.

Talk about Texans being so soft skinned, they can't handle the "hard hitting" Houston media. This franchise would fold if it was located in NY, Philly or Boston.
I can't imagine what their intent was. But I'd hate to find out it was about avoiding the media, when the media has been pretty light handed so far.

Sounds like the difference between training camp mode and regular season mode is media access to practices. Of course, it could just be the new Texans way, aka the Patriot way, to run their francise like North Korea, but who knows.

I will feel really bad for Tyrod if that takes place. Of coarse he is a grown man and he gets paid well regardless. Still I have been pulling for him to at least have his best season and for him to prove his doubters and our teams doubters wrong.

They don't care about your season ticket. No more than the Oilers cared about mine. Again, you're showing your true colors. These are accusations, nothing proven in court.

I dont care either.

I've had a great time over the yrs and have made friends with people we sit around and we see each other in the offseason, plus more importantly my wife enjoys going to the games.

But this is where I choose to draw a line in the sand.

You will have done what thousands of people have done this off season. Teams should earn your dollar. If you're in your feelings about a particular player, then that's your right. Don't make it seem like some self righteousness is going on. There are plenty of real world situations going on that people choose to ignore. When the owner was talking about inmates and yall won, you didn't cancel your tickets.

I'm just telling you what I'm going to do.

The inmates running the asylum comment is apples/oranges. Are all white players offended by being referred to as inmates? This is just another attempt to deflect/divide

We get to see them tomorrow. I've got a distinct feeling they'll be a mess though. After all the crap that has happened, a nice surprise would be welcome.

5 Things to Watch: Texans vs. Packers | Preseason Week 1

The Texans kick off their preseason campaign Saturday night at 7 p.m. CT in Green Bay. Houston faces the Packers at Lambeau Field, and it's the second time in three years these two squads commenced their preseasons against each other. They also played in Green Bay to start the 2019 exhibition slate. Here are five things to watch when the Texans and Packers square off in Wisconsin. Check out all the ways to watch here.

1) Quarterback spotlight – Tyrod Taylor, Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel will be under center for Houston. Taylor's been a steadying influence and effective field general through the first couple weeks of training camp. He'll likely get the start, and the Mills/Driskel combo will come on in relief after him.

Head coach David Culley hasn't specified how much action each quarterback will get in the opener, but all three will likely get some snaps. Culley, though, kept the team's plans close to the proverbial vest when asked how many reps the players would get. He said the Texans will "kind of take it one week at a time as to see what we need to do in that situation."

Taylor brings over a decade's worth of experience to the mix, while the 22-year old Mills left Stanford after his junior season with 14 career starts in college under his belt. Driskel, meanwhile, is entering his sixth NFL season with his fifth different franchise.

2) O-line combos – Laremy Tunsil has been selected to the last two Pro Bowls at left tackle for the Texans. He's a known quantity, and one of the best players on the entire team. The four spots to his right, though, are all fiercely contested and could be helmed by players who didn't start there in Week 1 of 2020.

Center Justin Britt, who was a longtime starter in Seattle from 2014 through 2019, has taken on a leadership role since arriving this spring. Tytus Howard, who's been a starter at right tackle the last two years, has also played along the line in various spots throughout camp. Green Bay native Max Scharping and veteran Justin McCray have seen quite a bit of action at the guard spots. Roderick Johnson and Charlie Heck have seen reps at the tackle spot, too.
Culley explained what he wants to see up front in the first game.

"Consistency, coming off the ball, communicating, everybody being on the same page," Culley said. "Their communication is critical."

3) New look defense – Lovie Smith is the defensive coordinator in Houston, and he's brought his 4-3 defensive alignment to town. For the first time since 2010, the Texans won't operate with a 3-4 scheme as their base defense.
The early noise in camp has been very positive, and several players are invigorated by the change.

"He likes the basic fundamentals," cornerback Desmond King, II said. "He teaches that every day to us. That's what you want to do as a player. You want to start from the basic and build from the ground up. I think that's what we're doing now, starting from the bottom and building up to where we want to be."

Through the early part of camp, Smith's defense has shined. They've routinely come up with takeaways, which was something the 2020 bunch did not. Last season, Houston was dead last in the NFL with just nine takeaways on the entire year.

4) Special teams newcomers – The Texans have a new punter in Cam Johnston, and a new return man in Andre Roberts. The latter's been to the last three Pro Bowls as a returner, and he's averaged 10.7 yards per punt return in that span. Roberts explained his main goal.

"Help out the field position battle," Roberts said. "Get our offense in a good position so they don't have to drive the length of the field."

Johnston, meanwhile, is enthused about the opportunity here. The punter in Philadelphia from 2018 through 2020, one of the main reasons he chose the Texans was the speed on the edges at punt gunner. He was impressed by the stable of players who will run down the field to cover punts.
THE REST OF THE STORY

Don’t think risking Tyrod Taylor in any Pre-Season game with exception of last one, leading up to season opener, a wise move.

I actually don’t have a problem with him getting a little extra work in these games. Injuries can happen in practice just as easily (see Watson 2017), or he could go down in week 1 and the Texans will be just as fucked. I think the benefit of Taylor getting some reps with his new team in a live game environment outweighs the risk of injury.
