Texans Minicamp, OTA’s and Preseason

So you got the same for me as Deandre Hopkins? Again? Jerry Jones knows how to party. He doesn’t get the Deshaun Watson type of massage. If that guy is going you are going to want to tag along.

Guess who is having a bad practice today. The number one pick Trevor Lawrence (3 interceptions so far). Lol Texans fans needs to stop overreacting.
I believe John Elway threw like 7 his 1st practice and they put in DeBerg.
Elway was then benched 5 games into the season and DeBerg played like 5 games. Then Elway came back and never looked back.

Its the hardest and most important position in all of sports. It usually doesn’t happen overnight.

From what I've heard is he's been very active and making plays. The Texans could certainly use this from the DT position. I wonder if Lopez is playing the same position as Tommie Harris did with Lovie's Bears?
In Lovies presser today he said Lopez has flashed. Said he’s gonna play nose guard but Said he’s got a little wiggle and has three technique athletic ability. He likes what he’s done so far and likes bringing young guys through the system

I read Mills had a better second day in pads. Threw a couple more TD’s today and one of them supposedly was a laser between defenders. They didn’t really say how Taylor’s day went outside a TD he tossed as well.

Howard has been moved to LG to start camp and it’s looking like a pretty solid move. Sharping and Heck manned the right side and were said to be opening holes for the running game. Collins had another TD I believe. The veterans are talking this guy up in a way that could equate to him becoming one heck of a bargain in RD3. I had to rub my eyes when I read this but it said the LB’ers have actually looked like they can defend in the passing game. That would be awesome to say the least.

Anyone whose ever played the position on any level understands this better than anyone.

As a former QB, I remember how tough it was learning how to run the veer…in frickin middle school in the early 90’s. I never played LL..everything I knew about football basically came from playing out in the street…& techno bowl; and you didn’t see it in those avenues. We Had like 1 pass play for the entire offense.

Fast forward to high school I’d mastered the veer….but then we started running the triple option 😂. Took me another year to get comfy running that…by my junior year, we started trying to pass it more & it took me 2 years to get comfortable with all that. I remember Some of those practices ……🤢 learning route trees and combos where your reads are, what to do if this or that happens…it was a B&@$#.

I say all that to say, folks need to chill on the practice int stuff. It’s not a big deal really. You’re out there trying to learn the playbook, your receivers and learn how to get in rhythm.

Again, nobody was making a big deal out of it. I made a sarcastic remark, but everybody else was like, "so what?"

They've just talked about Mills on 610 and I don't understand everything they're talking about. Something about some sort of charting system they use to keep track of the progress of a qb/player from day to day. One word they said was "robinhood"?

But anyhow, despite his bad day last Saturday, Mills is slowly charting up. No quick uptick, but a slow steady improvement which he has to continue. Said his good plays and decisions outnumber his bad . Saturday week, the week of the first preseason game, will be a telling date to see how he is charting and his improvement.

Mc Clain just said Mills looked very good yesterday, and in the red zone, where he looked so bad last Saturday. Said he's really waiting to see how he performs against the Packers.

I also recently remember that Chiefs fans were very concerned with Mahomes throwing so many picks in his 2nd year OTA’s, the year he was named the guy. He was throwing picks every practice.

It’s a very long road for a QB to master any NFL level playbook.
That’s why just athleticism doesn’t usually work in the NFL.

ALSO. Who cares? Mills is a 3rd round pick that the FO DID NOT move up for. If he doesn’t pan out it’s all good. Next year is a very deep class at QB.

Other than it would be nice to have a dependable #2 quarterback I’m meh about Mills and Driskle. But mainly that’s because I’m meh about this season. But if you anticipated the Texans having a legitimate chance of making the playoffs would you be comfortable knowing that in case quarterback #1 goes down you will have Mills coming in to try and save your season? So from that perspective, yeah, Mills’s development is something worth talking about. Right now there’s a pretty big gap between Taylor and the other two.

I think it’s going to be interesting to see how Culley can lead a team after the utter destruction caused by O’Brien’s time here, followed by the killing blow of quitter Watson.

Should be “some” entertainment value in that.

He also hasn't been back with the 1's again either. At least I haven't heard it. But again, going up against your own team in practice is really hard to get a good gauge on anyone's progress. Especially if your team isn't supposed to be all that good. That's why I so wish they were having scrimmages against other teams. F the preseason games. Mills going up against the Packers 2's and 3's, what does that do? Scrimmage with the Packers for 3 days next week, then the Cowboys the next week. Then if you have to get them ready for a game time environment, go ahead and have that last preseason game.

Although the offensive personnel will look very different…..I read a cool little blip about Taylor’s progress. Coaches are saying he has a complete grasp of the offense. I know it’s to their benefit to say this about Taylor but if it’s true I would like to know if the new RB’s are picking it up at the same pace.

If the OL is progressing with their realignment…..the pieces are there to have an interesting and productive offense for 2021.

I call it sneaky good. Wont be great but will do some things well and catch teams by surprise. We have no super stars but good role players.

That’s good to hear about the offense.

But what about the defense? I thought is where most of the holes are.

I’ve seen some positive stories coming out of the last 2 days (Wed & Thur)…….biggest observation; LB’ers and covering receivers actually being mentioned in the same sentence!!!! The DB’s have also seen their hands still attached to ball when they hit the ground…..I do believe that is what is commonly referred to as an INT everywhere else but Houston. DL has also looked good with Greenard getting some cudo’s as someone who can get to the QB….now he needs to establish consistency if he really wants to get observers excited.

Plenty of holes on the defense.

They were bad on defense, no doubt. But how bad? Hard to say when they played so much from behind.

Being able to convert third downs in the run game could go a long way towards helping the defense.

Defense is getting a lot of attention and a lot of good vibes.Omenihu is the most standout being mentioned. Blacklock, Lopez on the interior are producing so far. Collins and Jenkins are getting attention. Mercilus and Greenard, also.

Defense is deep and no one is predicting top ten, but everyone is saying we should expect a more productive D-line.

Before I didn't think the team was talented enough to win a championship and didn't think the POS style of play would ever lead to a championship. So yeah, I'm glad they're rebuilding.

I dunno so where are we at as far as the Oline goes ? Of course Tunsil is starting a LT, but right now who else is penciled in to start in the OLine ?

Right now, only Britt is a sure thing at OC. Howard will start but which position is still not certain.

Optimistic Texan had a good post on this at Random Thought #15,683.

Thanks for putting the video up b/c it answered one of my concerns…..I hadn’t heard a whole lot if anything on Blacklock. I was concerned that he was trending downward but I guess it’s quite the opposite. Coaches are happy with his play speed this year which might show just how important camp is for these rookies. He wasn’t able to benefit from a camp last season due to C-19 but a full season and “now” the opportunity to get a full camp in with a new DC and 4-3 system being installed seems to be allowing him to shine and showcase. Keep it up Blacklock!!! Having you on your “A-Game” this season would go a long way in helping to solidify this new front.

15 minutes of watching guys standing around? That is some great camera work. Then, the riveting interviews.

Q: What's the first thing you do when you get out of bed in the morning?
A: I brush my teeth.
Q: Fresh breath is important, huh? You got a nice smile.

Say what you want about the talent on the team. The Texans have an All Pro media department. :gotexans1
