Texans Minicamp, OTA’s and Preseason

There you have it. Texans possibly had the best turnout for OTA’s in the league. DC rewarded his players for that in face of so many players around the NFL that are skipping them. That is what a lot of one year contracts can do in a year where a new culture of competitiveness had to be installed.
Another decision which shows Caserio, Culley and the organization are making all the right moves. And one of the leading stories the past couple days is about fan dissatisfaction as shown by cancelation of season tickets.

I jumped the gun mainly because I wanted more Texans info to see and post. You’re spot on, they had almost 100% participation. A few players rehabbing and the sellout not showing up.

Some fans are superstar driven and since Watt is gone and Watson tripping. They don’t see any hope for the future. As you can see by a few responses from some members on here, we’re on our way to a win less season. Some are predicting maybe 2 wins.

Not just people here. Media (not that it really matters what they say), fans bailing on season tickets, and more importantly, Vegas, doesn't seem to think the Texans will do very well this season.

It boils down to everyone has their opinions based on what they see. You have yours, I have mine, except if mine differs from yours, you get butt hurt and break out the negative Nancy BS, and by that point, rational, reasonable, objective conversation is dead.

What's your prediction at this time ?

What are your expectations?
Total Team Offense =
Total Team Defense=
Wins=
Silly expectations when they haven’t started camp yet. Wins? A change in team attitude and culture. competitive, smart players. A clear definition of an offensive and defensive styles that are effective and can point the way for shaping a draft each year. Finally a coaching staff that matches NC’s players profile…are competitive and can change or make adjustments as necessary. Just make a move to put a real professional product on the field.

Of course. Because they can never do wrong in your mind.
No, if you objectively look at the changes made for this upcoming season, these changes portend significant improvement.

The only significant negatives are the lose of Watson and Watt.

On the positive side of the ledger, maybe the most significant change is the switch to a 43 defense. On the offensive side of the ball, its the change with our OL coach - James Campen.

Our OL has better talent and more depth this year. Our receivers are about the same, Collins replacing Fuller.

Or RB position is improved with the addition of Lindsay.

Our passing game will suffer with the lose of Watson, but Taylor will play error free ball and won't loose us any games.

On defense, Lovie Smith's Tampa 2 will create more turnovers. Mercilus, Greenard, Omenihu, Blacklock, Lonnie Johnson and perhaps others were played out of position in the 34 and their talents will be better utilized in the 43.

Shaq Lawson, Malick Collins, Jameel Johnson, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Jordan Jenkins, Christian Kirksey, Kevin Pierre-Louis all represent an upgrade in talent and much needed speed on defense.

Roy Lopez hopeful will be an improvement at NT.

No, there is a lot to be looked at positively with the expectation that our team will be much improved from last season if looked at objectively.

Great post.

But I caution you on the word usage: OBJECTIVELY. A few posters doesn’t like that word and will attempt to poke fun at you.

Well, yes, it could be argued that evaluation of talent/players is more subjective than objective. I was attempting to differentiate between the emotional, which it seems to me lies behind much if not all of the negativity.

They may have better depth, which is still to be determined, but they have no playmakers on either side of the ball.

I do agree about Lindsay, but I fear they’ll give Johnson a ton of rope before figuring out that Lindsay should be the guy.

More forced turnovers under Lovie? God I hope so. You can’t get much worse than they’ve been.

As for the rest of it, I’ll defer to my good buddy TB74, let’s wait and see.

That can be said for both sides of the spectrum. Either way it unfolds, it definitely looks like it's going to be a Circus the entire way through. Especially with the Watson crap looming with no resolution soon.
Guess so.

Its just that I don't foresee a complete "dumpster fire and winless season" as some are forecasting.

It would be nice if at the end of each game we can see improvement. That's all I'm expecting / hoping for.

Fans would probably be better served if we just placed the Watson "crap" on the back burner and stop anguishing over it. Serves no useful purpose.

I'm so ready for the games to begin, hoping I am not buying fools gold.

How many times do I have to post we have to wait and see? Don’t none of us know what we have just yet. Let them boys play some pre season games and a few regular seasons games first.
I think the Vegas Odds Makers have it right. Houston 4.5 wins. I believe the Texans will end this season right about where they did last year in all major categories. The roster doesn't look improved enough to make significant strides in any area.

I'm in wait and see mode for 2022. When they'll have the resources to drastically improve the roster. I wrote even before the 2020 season the Texans would be in for two-three years of pain, with 2021 season potentially the least competitive roster. It's just looking at a situation objectively and forming an opinion based on the information we had then and we have now. You don't have an opinion and that's fine, too.

yeah you’re a “kool aid drinker” if you don’t endorse the party line that they’ll suck to the high heavens.

I think everyone knows where this team is at in the process. Some just choose to embrace the negative side more b/c we don’t have enough star power & OH, Vegas also says we’re gonna stink too….for whatever worth that is:elvis:

So they will have resources to drastically improve the roster In 2022. We will be in for three years of pain. 2021 will potentially be the least competitive roster. This is your objective opinion but some others aren’t offering one? Really? Your objective opinions are automatically built into probably all wait and see attitudes without the need to state the obvious. Taking a wait and see attitude is an opinion. One that states one requires more evidence for predictions other than an “objective“ vegas odds maker. Ok.

My opinion is don’t be surprised if we actually play some solid football, netting more wins than expected.

Numbers wrote a great post above highlighting the improvements of this team. Like he said we’ll miss Watson no doubt. Watt in my honest opinion is not the superstar player he once was. Yes he made a few flashy plays here and there but he also got us burnt on the edge. We don’t have to worry about him missing his assignments anymore with that freelancing crap. Therefore overall the defense should be better.

You can kinda tell who pays attention to the league at large & who just watches the Texans only. There are just far too many factors that effect a team’s overall performance & record from week to week during the season to offer any concrete anything. The Packers going into this year….. The 49ers coming into last year….The Colts immediately pre & post Andre Luck’s retirement…..you just don’t know until the live bullets start firing & guys start going down….players & coaches start feeling the pressure….

I'll certainly welcome it if it happens. I moved out of the Houston area a month ago so I doubt I'll have many opportunities to watch this surprising transformation (provided it happens).

I only ask people what their expectations are because I'm genuinely interested in hearing (reading) what they have to say. People here can say a lot of things about me but one thing they can't say is that I bash people for having a differing opinion than myself. Number19 called me "dense" a couple weeks ago for having an opinion, I never do that crap. If I ask someone for an opinion it's because I appreciate and respect their viewpoint.

You’re good to go Banned. I know how you get down on here. I really don’t have any high expectations for this team. But since we have a new coaching regime and a host of new players. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and wait and see what we have after a few games are played.

We definitely lack blue chip talent but there are some guys that can be productive on both sides of the ball if the coaches play to their strengths. I’m not counting on it but I’d love to see productivity from Blacklock and Greenard now that they‘ll be attacking alot more in Smith’s system. I wouldn’t be surprised if Reid plays much better this season. Offensively, Cooks has been a very good receiver over his career and if Coutee gets his act together he’s shown signs of being a very productive slot receiver. I could see Akins taking another step forward in his development and I also like Lindsay. With competent coaching (finally) perhaps the OL will take a step or 2 forward which would help tremendously

I’m really hopeful that all Casserio and Culley’s talk about competition is more than just lip service and the best players play.

I really like the way Campen researches each players all the way back to previous training camps then is willing to customize drills for each individual for what they need. We may be pleasantly surprised with the growth in the OL group. We all knew the previous coach was not getting the most of his talent, if Campen gets these RD1 and RD2 guys playing to their ceiling and the JAGs improving like some of GB guys did, should be a very solid group

I predict the Texans oline will be respectable again.

Watching Devlins oline the past few years and hearing former players talk about him I can tell fundamentals wasn't something that was drilled home. Which for an oline is basically a death sentence.

This coach won me over in the first few minutes talking about fundamentals, footwork and hand placement. I expect tunsil to look like a best tackle in the league candidate again. I also expect to see some of the young guys take a step forward.

I know the kind of coach devlin is. I've seen them in live action. They are the kind that completely stifle growth and cause regression in a lot of cases.

Texans probably would've been better off with youtube tutorials for the oline Instead of devlin. Another wtf was OB thinking decision.

But I like the way this new guy talks about the position. He sounds like he knows wtf he's talking about.

Not saying there aren’t players that can’t be productive. My issue is, is there the talent there to be productive on a consistent basis? That I’m not so sure about. Better coaching could show us improvement in several areas, that’s just because of how bad it was before. They could easily look better, and the competition has guys beating out others wearing the same color jersey, but that doesn’t equate to outperforming the opposition.

I maintain that all of these moves made this year and all of the competition talk is mostly about improving depth, a necessary component of moving the team out of the abyss it’s in, but not one that alone makes them playoff contenders. With a full draft next year, and hopefully the Watson issue in the rearview, they can start building a core and adding playmakers, and who knows, maybe someone(s) here now steps up to be part of that. But all of that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to be a bad team record wise this year.

We’re going to see guys that show flashes and play well from time to time. It’s the NFL. Is anyone going to do it consistently, thus becoming more than just a depth player? That, I believe, is what this year is about. Improving depth and hopefully finding a couple of gemstones out of it.
