So if we took a gamble on some D or OL player in the third round he was going to set us up to glory land? you can’t say Mills is a wasted pick unless you prove your alternate choice right now wouldn’t prove to be wasted.
By year three that defensive player should be starting. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Maybe he's contributing on STs, maybe he's good depth.

Maybe he's about to be cut.

But if we draft a QB in the first round, Davis Mills will not be a starter. Will not play STs, may provide good depth... maybe as good depth ad Driskel or Finley...

I'd rather he becomes our Miami version of Tannehill & starts in 2022, & not draft a QB in 2022.

But if the Texans draft a QB in the 1st, I agree with 76Texans & it was a wasted pick.

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
Mills is a developmental QB for 2021 with 16 CFB games under his belt and a lot of upside.

Texans are rebuilding and that will take some time. They should avoid a QB in the 2022 draft and address other areas of need. That could be circumvented if a Lawrence, Mahomes, Watson, Burrows, etc were to surface based in their play and not the media hype.....then and only then would I draft a QB in RD1.

The Texans just might be developing their 2022 RD1 QB this season....the only difference, he’ll already have an NFL season of experience by 2022.

Caserio said competition was his main thing. It wouldn't hurt.my feelings at all if Caserio has any doubt he should go Strong/Rattler/Howell in the 2022 draft.
Really only one posters feewings are all in a butthurt pretzel over this and that has everything to do with our, soon to be on another team QB, after he settles his perv lawsuits, and nothing to do with a 3rd round pick.
But yeah, if they take one of those QBs, cool. The competition in camp will be intense.

I have no problem with this scenario either. Either way, HOU is rebuilding the team and that clearly includes the QB position and anyone that can’t accept it is in for a very long, and difficult time as a fan.

Trade value? Great backup? But moot point. The question is was he a good or reasonable third round pick? That’s all. As easy as you can say he’s wasted if we draft a Qb in round one next year I could say what if the person we drafted instead didn’t cut it. He’s not contributing either because he isn’t even on the team. But we digress.

He's as good a pick as any for the 3rd round, and given the QB situation on the Texans we'll find out this year what we have in Mills. And every other QB on the squad including those we haven't signed yet.

We might not find out if TT handles his business. I would rather Mills sit and learn a year.
The only way that happens is if Taylor stays healthy AND performs well every game. Which I wouldn't give you two cents on that bet. We'll see Mills this year whether he should be playing or not. Besides, we have to find out if we need to spend a 1st round pick on a QB next year. The only way we find that out is if Mills plays. If Mills plays up to expectations, which some on this board actually think he will, then they won't need to take a QB in the 1st round next year. Then they could take a o-lineman to help protect their new QB they magically got in the 3rd round.

Remember Mitch Trubisky? He had that one good year, then he didn't. & then there was Drew Brees. The Chargers went looking for better...

Putting the kid on the field this season isn't going to tell them what they need to know.

They should know before they ever put him on the field.

If Mills plays this year, and say wins 8 games he starts, would you still be drafting a QB in the 1st round next year?

You're spot on. The Texans drafting Mills is like the Jags drafting Jacob Eason last year knowing

One thing that can only be seen or determined by playing is, whether he can read the field and make the right throw under game conditions and when under pressure.

Possibly. If there is a supposed "Can't miss QB" there next draft, and there is another team that needs one, I might work out a trade with that team. I draft the QB they need, they draft a player we need, and then we trade those players, and they throw in additional players or picks we want or need.

Another possibility is if Mills shows himself to be serviceable like a Tannehill, and a can't miss stud QB appears like a Mahomes, I would draft that stud, and either keep Mills as a backup, or trade him to another team that needs a QB.

I think it was the other way around. Tannehill was the safe bet. Mahomes was a great prospect/project.

& that's another thing. The Chiefs didn't rush Mahomes onto the field to determine if they needed to address QB the next draft, they knew.

Same with the Seahawks. They didn't need to put Wilson on the field to know they didn't need Flynn.

According to this message board, Mahomes was a can't miss stud.

If you are old enough to remember, Joe Montana was looked down upon by 49er fans like Mills is looked down upon like some of the Texans fans.

I love both Mahomes and Montana in college.
Montana beat my Cougars in the Cotton Bowl by putting up 23 points in the 4th qtr.

Looking down is the wrong term.
Mills is a very good prospect in the third round.
But I'm tired of the Matt-Schaub-like results and style of play.

I'd rather take a chance on Ian Book, a shorter guy, but a true play maker and a gamer.

I don't see any Montana in Mills.

You ought to hope for a great prospect in 2022 rather than wishing that none emerges. :)

Spencer Rattler looks to me like somewhere between Mahomes and Murray at the same stage of their career. But he's a better runner than Murray.
Don't forget that he was just a RS FR last year.
....

Kedon Slovis is more of a pocket passer. He does have mobility, but he always looks to pass first.
He played as a true freshman in 2019 and started 10 games against quite better defenses than Mills did.
And he fared much better even as he's two years younger.
...
At the moment, those are the two guys I'm looking forward to watch in the fall.

Yeah, there’s all kinds of options and having Mills only helps HOU in that regard.
And he’s a 3rd round pick, so who cares anyways.

Try this one:

Interesting.

The Chronicle reported the day after the pick that the Mills family had been called, not by the agent, but by the Texans sometime late in the 2nd round, that Mills would be their selection if he was available. But Davis' sister said that the conversation was not very positive that he would be there for the Texans' pick.

So it sounds like Mond would have been their fallback pick if Davis was not there, and the Texans had been in contact with his agent conveying this information. The Mond family contact occurred toward the end of the 65th pick or just at the Vikings went on the clock (they got the text message and a "couple of minutes later" they got the phone call from the Vikings).

Fortunately for the Texans, the Vikings took Mond and the Texans got their player.

It doesn't matter to me which guy was the first choice; it was still the same story all along.

The Texans weren't willing to trade up to secure the guy they "want".
They were OK with whoever left.

Nor were they interested in the BPA. They were intent on taking a QB regardless. They had tunnel vision. Blows all of that Davis Mills was the man from the get go and the guy we wanted all along BS completely out of the water. Doesn't speak well for their draft mentality.

Or they just didnt want to trade any next year day 1&2 picks which is I’m sure what happened.

Not saying that anyone is lying. But we're in trouble if the Texans are telegrahing these picks like this. This guy saying his agent was already told he was going to be picked at 67.

Even worse, Mills getting a call in the 2nd round saying he's not going to slide further than 67.

I wonder if these agents were trying to manufacture interest for their clients.

If you believe this report. Which I'm sure you do.

Funny thing is I saw a video where supposedly before the Mond pick Caserio called Mills and told him that he would be the pick if Mills was there at 67.

I see a difference in the two situations. In the Mills conversation, it was the Texans talking to Davis, no agent involved so no chance of a leak. The Mond call was made while the Vikings were already on the clock, with Mond's agent, so there was really no time left for a leak. It seems to me that the Texans were expecting the Vikings to take Mills, and pre-draft talk was that the Vikings had been really impressed with Mills' pro day work out.

I don't think Mond's Dad has any reason to lie if that is what you mean. I knew you would pull an excuse out of your bag of Caserio excuses. I just had no idea what excuse it would be. I must say though that is pretty big bag of Caserio excuses you got there. :)

Moving up a few spots there wouldn't have cost much.
Look at the moves before that.

And how do you know the Texans didn't try to move up? You make assumptions and statements like this when you have no idea of what was actually going on. It takes two teams to make a trade. Although it would be safe to assume that there was a limit on how much draft capital they may have been willing to spend to move up.

Did the Texans use their resources to move up?
They sure did.

.....

Look at all the trades before that pick.
Or didn't you?
It does not take all that much to move up 5-8 spots.
People were buying and selling all days.

...
Also, the less they're willing to spend the more it shows they weren't invested in the QB position around there (in the second round); ie., to the Texans, they were all long shot.

In that general area of the draft, the Browns moved up 7 spots in the 2nd round and had to use a 3rd round pick to do so. They did get an extra 4th round pick in the exchange, but the important part of the trade was they had to give the Panthers their 3rd round pick to move up 7 positions at the bottom of the 2nd. The Texans did not have an extra 3rd round pick to move into the 2nd. We would have had to give up our 4th and 5th rounders, and maybe more. No, the only real option the Texans had was to let the draft come to them at that point of the draft.

Caserio has shown he has no problem using future draft picks to move up. If Nick thought Davis was that future franchise QB he could've used a 2022 1st, 2nd or 3rd rd pick to make it happen.

Gents this was a Pep Hamilton pick.
