Sexual Assault Suits Against Watson

If Michael Vick can come back from killing dogs, Watson can come back from finger in the booty. When that might be though, is the big question.

I think this doesn’t get cleared up for a long while. We’re already talking depositions not getting done until after the Super Bowl, or right around there. If I were a betting man, I’d bet his contract ends up getting voided and the Texans get nothing out of it in the end.
He’s going to be fortunate to stay out of prison

Question that hasn’t been asked: has he even done enough in the NFL in four years to “ deserve” special treatment from the NFL? I dont think he’s made his bed yet and even messed it up with his trade demands. Everything this guy has done has been a comedy of errors regarding timing And sleaze. he is the LAST player the NFL will want his name on a product that’s not NFL KY Jelly.

I see 9 and 7 so the numbers are up and down. Either way you look at it he has dug a grave. You have the civil lawsuit against him with numbers going up. Then you have criminal cases on top of that. He is not going to just walk on this. As far as a trade to "escape the Houston area"...not unless he wanted traded to a country that doesn't extradite. That's the only way he is going to be traded for now
2 filed criminal earlier then 7 others later. Total 9.
Watson could be the Undertaker; just when he gets buried up he comes.

I can see civil being resolved based on 'info" posted that disagreement now is over disclosure. The 9 criminal claimants may decide to drop that and get some money if it is explained rarely do these types of claims result in guilty decisions. Sure those may not be about $ but if no guilt attached at some point, get what you can. There has to be some satisfaction in costing #4 millions in endorsements.

There will be teams that are willing to pony up for DW's football skills and when others see a hog at trough will want a place too.

Miami, Jets and Philly have said they are good with their QB but none has stated absolutely no on Watson. Denver and GBay depending on Rogers as well as Detroit should be interested.

Wish someone will show me how putting makeup on him and letting him play again promotes the image and resources of the NFL. Don’t they already have better players and human examples to promote?
DW acknowledges he was wrong and insensitive and momma taught him better. He states he has tried to make it better with $ and is joining the NFL in creating a foundation to empower women and to fight discrimination; as a minority he should have known better. Agrees to do promos "I was blind but now I see." Cry a little. Everyone loves a mea culpa and redemption story. We see that often in politics and entertainment industry.

I believe it is more about what he might still do in NFL next ten years.

In that case he will do more harm than good. he Didn’t kick a dog. I just don’t believe that a multi billion dollar industry with dozens of better employees would try to make money on a sexual predator That wanted to ruin their business model.

No matter how it plays out, it will follow him for the remainder of his career. How much will folks talk about it 5-10 years from now though is the question?

Do folks regularly talk about Roethlisberger with his history in mind?

Do folks regularly talk about P. Manning with his allegations from a physical therapist at Tennessee?

The nfl is a business. The money making business.

Assuming there is no hard factual evidence ever presented like video and just he said vs she said testimony, they'll slap him on the wrist as formality. They'll do it because they're supposed to.

It's just posturing.

As soon as he's back to increasing revenue for a team like the Dolphins the nfl will forget.

If Watson (sometime in the future) ever acts contrite over this and promises he'll get rehab and he's humbly sorry for all he's done and all that other horseshit, and the NFL thinks Watson's new act is commercially passable, he'll get another shot. Even if he never changes a damn thing except learning how not to be stupid about his private life, and the rehab crap is all a sham, he could still play if he at least acts right. We all know this to be true. Whether or not Watson decides to smarten up and play the "public game" is yet to be determined though. So far, he isn't. And if he gets a bunch of jail time the discussion is over with anyway.

Not arguing, this is all in the opinion realm but thinking the NFL plans to make money in a redemption plot on a recognizable player that is trying to heal from the trauma of being a jerk that likes fingers in his butt is ass - inine. they have more to gain by standing up now to this crap. You think this type of privilege never ends? It’s changing before our eyes. Bad press can instantly appear anytime this guy is allowed to be around The NFL.

Consider this. It takes only 1 complainant that is not involved in a civil suit to make it to depositions/court on criminal basis......and even lose............and then turn around and sue in civil court for much more than would have been possible without having first gone the criminal route.

Federal Rules of Civil Procedure
Rule 32. Using Depositions in Court Proceedings

A deposition lawfully taken and, if required, filed in any federal- or state-court action may be used in a later action involving the same subject matter between the same parties, or their representatives or successors in interest, to the same extent as if taken in the later action.

And there's that history I was talking about up-thread when I said the NFL likes to talk the talk but not necessarily walk the walk.

I've been told that times'a-changin', so we'll see. "Me, too" has been oddly silent about this very high profile case, tho'. . .
Agreed,

Wonder why they're so silent?

Yes, because it is all about the bottom line of profit. If an owner has the ability to tolerate the behavior from his past, then he will play. With Ben and Vick as examples, clearly owners are willing to look past the "crime" towards the money.

On a side note: Not often a star player who is a stand up guy get interviewed about a player like Vick being on his team. They are pretty much made to play nice and win.

Yes sir and until you have that one you have none. Also I think if those 9 are told they will lose their criminal case they will settle and not pursue civil.

Not denying you by any means. Can you divulge your source or how confident you are in it? im just trying to digest this. Thnx
I cannot divulge my sources.

I'm 101% confident in the information that I've given here (# of cases both civil & criminal).

What none of us know at this point is how many of those criminal cases reach an indictment and that's the hundred sixty million dollar question.

Those felony charges are the only thing that matters when it comes to him resusming his career .... he could lose every civil suit and play again as long as he isn't convicted on a felony charge.

I do not think he will be convicted of any felonies. I still think there will be settlements at some point of the civil.

Unless Watson is behind bars or being forced to wait for the completion of litigation , and he may very well be for all I know, I just can't see him sitting out the season because football is all he knows and all he's known since he was a small child.
My thought is, before this came to light, dude was demanding a trade and said he would never play for Houston again. How would it look if dude shows up for training camp now?

Yes, I've suggested this in an earlier post. There are 3 deadlines: 1) the mandatory mini camp. He'll skip this; the fines are only about $100K. 2) the beginning of training camp. This is a little dic ier. The fines begin to add up to almost $3.6M. Goodell is not likely to step in at this point. 3) the beginning of the season. This is when Goodell is most likely to hand down a decision, but if he doesn't, Watson is up a creek without a paddle. If he chooses to not show up, he's going to lose about $11M in base salary.

If he does show up, the Texans are up the creek.

I’m with Texan279 on this. If he shows up at the start of the season what then does he have to do. Just show up? Does that mean suit up Or just be in some area of the facility on game day? that event would earn your salary even if you have vowed never to play with them again? I remain baffled with these scenarios mainly with how this dovetails with his legal problems and public perception. Wonder if he or his attorney ever considered the idea that him showing up now to play, being contrite and focused is the better defense for getting his problems mitigated? Being an arrogant jerk with the Texans shows a mindset that he is on a privileged plane and can move people like chess pieces can’t be separated from the mindset of a sexual predator.

If he "shows up", I'd think this means he has to suit up and be ready to play. It would be treated the same as if he had held out over salary or such. I think, but not certain, the league would give the Texans a few weeks before he'd count against the 53.

But if Goodell allows him to play, then I would think the Texans would be allowed to trade him immediately as soon as they got an acceptable offer.

This creates all kinds of problems I don't think Goodell will allow to happen.

If Watson doesn't show up when its mandatory , its just more bad advice from his agents / handlers because as soon as he does show up he's going on the CEL , Goodell is NOT going to have Deshaun Watson on an NFL field until his legal issues come to a conclusion. Not showing up , getting fined and not accruing a season is just ignorant on his part under the circumstances.
Being on the CEL is a win for Watson , it gets him everything he wants - paid , accrue a season and not playing for the Texans ... and its terrible for the Texans , that's why Goodell won't use that option until he is forced to do so ....

This from @CloakNNNdagger 's source , I believe he mentioned it above : Apparently Goodell is not at all happy about Watson & Mulugheta trying to break the leagues player movement standards and not honor the contract he signed .... He's going to do Watson no favors & Mulugheta is on thin ice with the league.

I don’t know. This just muddles it for me. So say Goodell for some weird reason allows him to play. He’s already said he will never play for them so I agree With you. Goodell won’t go there. Don’t know about the trade possibilities. His legal issues kills that idea for now. Wow. When NC and DC reached out to him initially and He crapped on them that may to this day be his biggest mistake IMO. wonder if he’s already been told he can’t show up. That for now seems to be the most fair way to proceed For the Texans, trade partners, and the NFL. The way this decision would work is if all parties know something in the investigations that we don’t know yet.

I'm almost positive that they know a lot more than they are telling .... Watson had to tell Harden pretty much everything so he can defend him .... otherwise there could be some nasty surprises in store for the defense.

The Texans aren't going to tell him "don't show up" .... that weakens their hand - he doesn't have to hold out which is the best thing that can happen for the team - A Watson hold out where he's fined and doesn't accrue a season which has a lot of negatives for Watson.

Everyone knows he's not playing .... its a matter of how we arrive at that.

Again , the most logical result is that Watson shows up when its mandatory and is instantly put on the CEL. It's just too convenient for him.

I think we can forget about trade partners for the time being .... at least until there is some clarity on the felony criminal cases.

If those don't result in indictments , then we can talk about trade scenario's.

If they do result in indictment's , this'll drag on for much longer.

Minus the felony cases , the worst thing that Watson faces is a league suspension and no team is really worried about that unless its multiple seasons. If the suspension were a full season(s) , the Texans would wait to trade him until that term is served. They wouldn't have to pay him nor would he accrue a season.

We're just going to have to wait for the felony cases to come to the next phase.

I believe the Texans have all the control over Watson, for the next 5 years, right. I don’t see him being here that long..but Cal should set an explain to this jerk of a player who is Disloyal. Not to mention what Texan fans think of his pervert behavior. Cal will pay him but don’t let him anywhere near the players. Cal needs to have Watson meet him every Sunday in his box suite and sit there with him, Nick and Jack.

not a well written way at an attempt to be sarcastic. the NFL has managed to allow players to ignore play for pay contracts even while embarrassing teams with their behavior yet teams can still be forced to pay those contracts under league rules? Also that player can eventually enforce a NT contract clause even while refusing to play under that contract While he awaits numerous sex related charges to be solved? There is no way an attempt to end that nightmare is free of duress. I thought duress killed a contract.

Essentially two or more teams agree to terms and send it to the league for approval.

Yes , the Texans could theoretically trade Watson right now if a team wanted to take on that risk .... and if the Texans wanted to take less than they might get if he gets out from under the felony charges.

It's probably beneficial for the Texans to play the long game here.
