No one should be shocked by this. New Coach, pretty much a new team, no JJ no Watson. This will be an interesting season for sure. On a bright note i wont pick so many Texans players now on draftkings which burned me A LOT in the past...

New GM, new coaching staff, 30+ new players, this is basically a new team, so I'll wait until pre-season to make a prediction. I do like what Caserio and Culley are doing thus far so, I'm leaning towards a Texan victory. I do think we'll have a better secondary and O-line, so that's going to be a big help.

My predictions are usually based on how much pot I've been smoking, what everyone else is saying, and what the weather is like outside. Sometimes I'll ask the little guys in the UFOs that land in my parking lot. It's confusing, but it works some of the time. And it's as accurate as anyone else's predictions.

I would be surprised if the Texans are favored against any opponent in 2021. This will be a bad team, as expected. You don't throw a bunch of JAGs together with an ad hoc group of coaches and expect great things.

I expect us to compete but I am not seeing many victories on the horizon. Still, like some others, I won't be bold in making predictions at least till I get a feel for this team from training camp and preseason.

After reading through that and no prediction? :) So you are not high, you're not up to date on the chitter chatter, clueless about the weather and your parking lot is empty?

No, just haven't made a prediction yet.

Meh, I'm not surprised to be an underdog.

I think we win, not because we will be good, but right now too many unknowns to really game plan against with all that is new and it IS the Jaguars.

I won't be heart broken to see a loss as I expect so very little this season, but a win wouldn't shock me.

If it is a W it will be one of very few... if not the only.

Start the season off by proving all the naysayers wrong. Let’s go Texans
The sayers that say “nay”.

Beating the Jaguars is not much of measuring stick for many teams but for the Texans this year? Yeah, it would be a moderate upset if the Texans won their season opener against the Jags. Sad how far they fell in such a short period of time.

Most definitely, it's not nothing to brag home to momma about. But it will still be a good start. Especially since so many of their own fan base doesn't have any type of hope for them. Disclaimer: I'm not saying they deserve that type of support.

The Jagoffs also have a new coach, a new QB, and many new players. One major difference is that their coach is coming from the college ranks, and superstar college coaches sometimes don't fare that well in the NFL.

I can't believe this is the national view of our team.

Don't get me wrong, I know it's bad... but I didn't think it was dogs to the Jags/Jets at home bad.
You've got to remember those two teams while picking 1 & 2, both had multiple draft picks in the early rounds and the Texans were almost as bad (picking 3rd) and had no early picks. They got the top 2 qb's in the draft and the Texans are hoping they have a qb

True enough. We were 1, 2, & 3... worst teams in the NFL last year. & I'm thinking we're in a different class altogether.

Yeah one site ( Sportsnaut) predictions

Titans 10-7
Colts 9-8
Jaguars 9-8
Texans 0-17 and getting blown out in every game except 1 or 2. Lol
*sigh* It'll be a long season, but at least next April should be a lot of fun! lol

Not to say that I'm not looking forward to football season, which I do regardless of the situation of the local team. And even with the Texans, there's still stuff to look forward to. I figure they'll win at least one of 'em. Some team will look past the Texans and let their guards down.

And I'm looking forward to seeing if this staff can get this roster to be competitive on a weekly basis.

Plus, there's always Davis Mills. :koolaid::texflag:

I guess these experts feel DW was worth that much. Mebbe so. But we only won four games. Here is a theory. Not saying I believe it or not, but it fits some of the facts. What if DW and Hopkins were in together to maximize their contracts? They both have shown themselves to be selfish, not selfless. Both had expensive lifestyles to manage. Perhaps a game manager is what we need. Someone who can make a quick read on a defense. Mills had to. DW never had to. And it’s not as fun staying in the off-season to learn that skill rather than island hopping over the world. Perhaps our “long developing routes” were just so DHop could get open. He was always in a fist fight at the LOS and his routes were slow to develop. Defensive coordinators knew that. Maybe DW failed to make the quick read and throw...not sexy but would sustain drives, buy time for the D, the OL etc. maybe even win more games. Perhaps the receivers running routes in the same field area were having to innovate because the quick throw wasn’t made. Sure happened a lot. We will see.

For those looking to make $$$ on the team's misfortunes, the Texans are 17-1 to go winless in 2021, according to Fanduel. That's not a bad bet, really. If the season were played 17 times, I think the Texans would go winless more than once.

They've replaced over half the roster with other team roster cast offs, a brand new front office with a brand new plan for a whole bunch of mediocre players who haven't seen the plan yet, and a schedule that isn't an easy one. Plus some QBs that no one thinks capable of starting. I'm pretty sure that superb owl has flown off to another field to look for mice.

Losing them all is about as hard as winning them all. An injury, couple of fumbles, bad weather, any number of things can allow you to accidently stumble to victory on any given Sunday. Since the merger there's only been 2 undefeated seasons, '72 Dolphins and '07 Patriots. In the same time, not counting strike shortened seasons, there's only been 3 winless seasons, '76 Bucs, '08 Lions and '17 Browns.

Not saying the talent collected doesn't give them a chance to lose them all, just that it's very hard to do. I give them a puncher's chance against the Jags and Jets at home. And who knows, maybe the Titans aren't playing for anything in that last game.

I thought maybe 4 wins was doable but then someone posted the potential starting offense and defense somewhere around here and yikes, 4 seems like it's asking a lot. I just think 0-17, despite what the roster looks like, is going to be very hard to do.

It is hard to do, that's why they give 17-1 odds. But, take the 2017 Browns example. They should have finished 3-13 based upon their points scored vs points allowed. They lost 5 games by 4 points or less. But, they were last in the league in scoring and next to last in points allowed. Add in a bad head coach, a rookie QB, and that's a recipe for a really, really bad team.

Last in points scored and next to last in points allowed? Or vice versa? That sounds like the 2021 Texans to me. Bad head coach? Who really knows? The guy has never been a head coach before. The rookie QB may not play much, or could play a lot. I'm just saying the possibility of an historically bad season is on the table.

It could happen, but I really don't have the heart to make that bet... even if O'Brien was the HC.

I would have taken the bet that O'Brien gets fired again though, if he's still here. :ahhaha:

O'Brien getting fired again?

That should be our SB every year until we actually get to one.

The annual firing of OB festival....... people could come from all over the world.... like they used to do with tge running of the bulls.... only... this would be where everyone chases him out of town.

Lol..I could see us still winning three to four games this season. Time will tell.

Bad head coach? Who really knows? The guy has never been a head coach before.
Former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Giants, "Tom Coughlin," turned out to be a pretty good head coach and he was never anything more than a position coach when he got his chance to lead a team. Some of the best seasons in the history of the Jacksonville Jaguars happened under Tom Coughlin, and his record and two Super Bowl titles with the Giants put him in history as one of the greatest head coaches of all time.

I guess my point is that Dave Culley should not be written off simply because of his age and having never been anything more than a position coach. In some ways Dave Culley is taking over our team,"being more or less like an expansion team", just as Tom Coughlin did when he became head coach of the expansion Jaguars in the mid 90's. Expansion and a total rebuild of an NFL team aren't all that different.

I won't hold my breath in regards to the season being anything like those expansion Jaguars early seasons were, but there is precedent for us to exceed expectations, so nothing is impossible.

As I said, who knows what kind of coach Culley becomes. But, searching for first year head coaches that mirror his age and coaching experience is a challenge. Tom Coughlin was 49 when he got the Jags job. And he had been a college HC for 3 years prior.

Gunther Cunningham received his first and only NFL HC gig at 53 with Kansas City. Cunningham had been an NFL assistant for 14 years before getting the Chiefs top job, the previous 6 years as the KC DC.

Marv Levy became a first time NFL HC at 53 with the Chiefs. Levy had been a HC in the CFL for 5 years prior, as well as a college HC for over a decade.

Buddy Ryan got his shot as a HC at 55. Had been an assistant in the NFL for 18 seasons. Still, he was the DC of the Super Bowl champs and quite possibly the greatest single season defense in NFL history.

Romeo Crennel was named the Cleveland Browns HC at the age of 58. Crennel had never been a HC at any level prior, with 24 seasons as a NFL assistant, 6 as coordinator.

Bruce Arians was named interim HC of the Colts at the age of 60. Arians was hired as HC of the Cardinals the next year, at 61. Arians had spent 19 years as an NFL assistant (9 as a coordinator), though he did have 6 seasons of college HC experience at Temple.

David Culley became HC of the Houston Texans at 65. 27 years as an NFL assistant. Never a coordinator in any of those 27 seasons. 16 years as a college coach, all as an assistant.

No previous NFL HC is totally comparable to David Culley. No one had ever hired a 65 yeal old with zero HC experience and zero seasons as a coordinator until the Texans did. This is unique. I've tried to find the closest comparisons. But they're not the same.

What the Jaguars were given when they first entered the league are totally different from what the Texans expansion team were given.

This team is probably somewhere in the middle, IMO.

Good post; but I would add, there is nothing inherent to prevent someone at age 65 from making a sucessful career change. I was still in top form when I was involuntarily caught up in the economic chaos last year at age 72. And in fact, I was just contacted by my old employer to see if I was interested in coming back.

The primary requisite is his ability to relate to and to connect with his players. His 27 years as an assistant should provide a solid clue in this area. Another important requisite would be his health, which seems to be OK.

And finally, it should be evident that he has a sound plan and direction that would be implemented. This would have been determined in his interviews with Cal McNair, Caserio and Easterby.

I don't think his age should be an issue or concern. I'm just interested in seeing what the makeup of the team will be and whether I will like it and be entertained by the Texans play on the field.

You can’t say that right now main reason because we’ve seen too many teams draft high every got darn year only to look like crap during the season.
Those teams specifically. The Jags & Jets have been here before. So has the Texans.

Regardless how many more draft picks they've had or more cap space, they haven't managed to do much better than the Texans.

I mean yeah, the Jags got to the AFCCG once, but they've been looking up at the Texans the other 9
