[Pick 147] Brevin Jordan, TE, Miami

Is he a TE, is he a WR, he’s a receiving entity. So explosive as a pass catcher. Most overlooked TE in the class. Thought he would go in the 3rd. Never will be a great blocker. Good sense of running routes vs zone & man coverage. — McShay
Cannot block? Uh oh.

The bridge between stupid and useless is short.
Look, I don't hate the player. He may turn out to be good. But this gd'ed franchise chases tight ends like they're on a big foot expedition. They keep chasing and dreaming of gronk but never utilize the ones they have. Sick of this sh*t. Stop the fettish.

The franchise didn’t utilize the TE’s they had, the coaches did. New coaches around Kelly. Could be thinking of using them more in a ball control O.

Yup sure maybe could be. I'll believe it when I see it.

There’s not a better theme in football the last 10-15 years than a team making it to (or winning) the SB and having an elite TE. You have almost zero chance of becoming one of those teams unless you draft one and hope you hit on one.

How many have we drafted and still didn't get there because we neglected other positions?

Apologies if my responses are blunt. I've been watching a lake for days now with no sign of nessy...

I'd rather have a tight end that kinda sucks at blocking and can catch, instead of the other way around. I don't have the numbers but seems like this team LOVES to draft blocking TEs that are physically impressive but are horrible at securing the ball.

Historically (Capers thru BoB), this team has always struggled with red zone issues. We can march down the field between the 20s, but once they get inside the 20, it's like watching a different team. If this guy, along with Nico, become RZ threats that actually get used, it could be a game changer.

We had a great RZ TE in Darren Fells but didn't want to pay him. Kahale Warring needs to **** or get off the pot. He's going to have a lot of competition with the 7 TE's now on the roster.

Shades of Jimmy Graham with this kid. He and Jordan Akins have the same athletic build and skillset as well. The key with any of these types of TE's isn't how well they run and catch but how well do they/can they block. I think its safe to say Akins is what he is at this point in that department. If this kid can block even a modicum better, he was worth the pick...b/c we already kind of know what he'll be giving us in the pass game.

We now got an offense that will score billions of points and we still got four draft choices left to build the defense. What's with all the negativity?
I don't really understand it either. A tight end and running game are the 2 best friends of a QB....ESPECIALLY QB's with limited mobility and/or skill sets. We saw Lamar Jackson become an MVP barely throwing it to anyone BUT his TE's.

We also currently have 4 RB's on the roster who all bring different skill sets to the table & we'll now have 3 very dynamic TE's on the roster. Shaping up to be a ball control offense with lamar jackson light under center.....which makes sense since our HC was last employed in Baltimore.

Ball Control will be a boost to the D. Should help better than adding late round defensive picks.

Lamar Jackson light under center? If you’re talking about Tyrod Taylor, you couldn’t be more wrong. Tyrod is an actual QB, and throws the ball better than Lamar Jackson in every sense of the word. He’s mobile enough, but he doesn’t have anywhere near Lamar’s speed. I think our running game will help Tyrod enough where all he has to do is be a game manager.

Sure is a difference of opinion here about his blocking.

Brevin Jordan TE/HB Miami
by Drew Boylhart • March 15, 2021

STRENGTHS
Brevin is a solid football player and a smart one. He is used all over the offense as an in-line blocker or off the line blocker and a blocker in space. He shows solid hands to catch the ball but his ability to fight tooth and nail, without penalty, to make his blocks is the key to Brevin becoming an intricate part of a team’s offense at the next level. When Brevin lines up in the slot or out wide in the red zone as a receiver he can take the quick pass and make yardage that can move the chains but the truth is, Brevin success at the next level will be based on his ability to block, very much like 49ers Kyle Juszczyk.
CONCERNS

Brevin doesn’t have the athletic talent and skills to have much of an impact in a team’s passing game. Oh, he can catch the ball as good as most but he just doesn’t have the speed or quickness to scare defenders unless they forget about him and think he is going to block them instead of running a route. Brevin will have to get stronger and work on his quickness but as long as he realizes what his strength is for the next level he can become very successful at the next level.
BOTTOM LINE 4.78
What you see, is what you get with Brevin and if you are going to use him as the 49ers use Kyle Juszczyk than Brevin, because of his ability to block and high football IQ can become an intricate part of a team’s offense. Nevertheless, if a team doesn’t use a fullback or H-back or for that matter a true blocking TE then don’t bother to select him.

Texans are TE hoarders
I'm confused. Who are these great TEs on the Texans roster? This was a need* position.

*The Texans need players at every position.

A stud athlete. But is he a stud TE? I don't mind the pick as long as someone is not going to make it through TC

I'm thinking Caserio believes in drafting and developing offense, and signing FA for defense.
That's the only logic I can find
I believe he brought in a bunch of veterans who can play right away. Especially knowing we didn’t have a 1st round or a 2nd round pick this season. Not only that but this year’s draft didn’t have a bunch of studs on that side of the ball.

I'm thinking he's actually more worried about the offense this year than he is the defense. The reality is we don't know what we have on defense even before all the signings because that defense quit by game 5 of the season. The only one still trying was JJ but he was a shell of his former self and was trying to play like it was 2014 again.

My theory is they are loading up the offense with what they can, see what Lovie can do with the current defense and then in 2022 draft heavy D when they have some early picks to get guys that will actually move the needle.

This is probably the best value pick the Texans made in the draft. No other TE on this roster was as polished and productive coming into the league as a rookie as Jordan. The #1 TE recruit in high school and a 3 year starter at Miami (who is known for churning out quality TEs). And he is just 20 years old!

The tape shows an instinctive player who turns into a big RB with the ball in his hands that can pile up yac. Also a willing blocker that will improve with time coaching up his technique and adding man strength to his 20 year old kid body.

We may have a lot of TEs on the roster but aside from Akins (who is 29 and in the last year of his contract) they are mostly bigger Y TEs. Brevin Jordan can push Akins this year and if Akins holds him off then the rookie can play the Cullen Gillaspia H-Back/FB role this year then take over Akins role next year.

The team hopefully gets a comp pick losing Akins and replaces him with a player who has more potential on a 5th round rookie contract. This is the type of forward thinking move successful teams make. Hope to see more moves like this from the new administration!

NC was asked in his presser this question, why a TE with others on the team. He basically said it’s all about competition. Pretty much indicated his draft is all about repositioning to get the player they want while trying to understand the supply and demand for players at every position. He is definitely drafting for competition and for players meeting his criteria that will give them the best chance to contribute in the NFL.

Seems Jordan has a history of serious injury problems. Two years ago had a Lisfranc foot injury requiring surgery. Last season missed games with a shoulder injury of his AC joint.

" I'm missing six months, seven months, where I'm really supposed to be out a year".

I think this quote refers to him coming back quickly from his injuries. But he underperformed at his proday, running a "pedestrian" 4.64 and had a vertical jump of only 34 inches.

If we use him like I think we will be he will likely not be hit a lot. If you want to go back and watch the Oilers and how they used Wychek (sp). I think it is how we will use him. And he will split time with one of the other TEs. A Hybrid H-back, FB, screen catching and blocker. But at his size, I think blocking will be chipping a LB or DE as he goes into his screen area. So, he should be 1 vs 1 maybe 2 when he has the ball. Not 2 LBs, or LBs and DBs plus maybe a DE. He will still be hit just likely not by the front 7. I like his odds vs LBs and DBs. At 220, he could add 10-20lbs and done right not lose speed or athletic ability. With Nico outside and a RB it will open up more for him 1 v 1. Unless he is used as a true TE. I just think his athletic abilities make him better suited for the role I described.

It must be in the GM's contract that they are required to draft a TE in every draft.
Caserio has said over and over he wants competition in training camp. If you look at our TE's, Auclair, Brown, Izzo and Warring are all about 6'-5" and 255 lbs +/-. Akins is 6'-4" and about 240 lbs. Jordan is 6'-3" and about 245 lbs. The four are TE's. Atkins and Jordan more fit the mold of an H-back.
